Sluggish Performance with Tiger

I just installed 10.4.4 on my 20" iMac 1.25 GHz (725MB RAM) and everything seems sluggish - poor performance. Additionally, I am now having CD reading problems. I've tried disk utility and cocktail, but things still seem slow.
All advise is welcome.

Try booting from the Tiger installer disc and try repairing the hard drive from there. Run a repair for permissions as well.
What did you use Cocktail for? Deleting caches?

There may be other software that is causing your problem, but the Blackberry software regularly crops up as being the cause of slow-downs or unpredictable behaviour. Try uninstalling it using the uninstaller that is hopefully available from Blackberry.
Hopefully others will spot this thread and have some other suggestions. There are a few entries for things I've never heard of (not that that means much ), but there's a chance that they are not compatible with Mavericks and could be contributing to the sluggish performance.

  • Sluggish performance with OSX 10.9.2?

Since the automatic download of OSX 10.9.2, Cloud 2.0.1, and Tunes 11.1.5 on 26 Feb 2014, I have had prolonged periods of "sluggish" performance on my iMac; slow to open Safari and my home page, very slow sending of email and frequent need to re-enter "sites" to get to the location.
I have brief periods where operating my iMac is a "breeze;" instant connection to Safari and my home page, quick sending of email, and instant entry to web-sites I selected.
And, when I've tried to re-store my 5 and 5s iPhones on iTunes due to rapid battery depletion; I'm informed that "tones" that I've used on the iPhones previously cannot be "copied" to the iPhones.
    Any similiar problems? Suggestions?

  • Premiere Pro 7.2.2 - 10.8.5 - Sluggish Performance (with a Bluetooth twist!!)

    Hello all -
I've BOLDED all of the relevant info for the ADD poster children like myself.
I'm having performance issues with PP 7.2.2 running on a Mac Pro 2010 2 x 2.4 GHz (full specs below).  The issue makes PP pretty much unusable, and I'm 100% certain it's a CC thing, because CS6 isn't showing any of the same symptoms.  Whenever I switch from one window to another (sequence to source monitor, source to program, load a clip into the source, etc) I cannot scrub through the footage or sequence.  It takes PP 5+ seconds to "catch up", and then it scrubs just fine in whichever window I've just switched to; UNUSABLE.
Now here's the catch (and trust me, it's a weird one!).  If I am using PP and connect my Mac Pro to ANY Bluetooth Speaker, it works just fine!  No sluggishness, runs like a charm and becomes the PP I've come to know and love (and I come from the Avid world, so that's saying a lot).  However, this presents a major issue:  bluetooth introduces 1/2 second or more of delay in the audio, which makes cutting to music very frustrating, to say the least.
Now I don't know how far down the rabbit hole I want to go with this issue, but I'm guessing it has something to do with Core Audio and/or PP just doesn't like the Mac Pro's audio hardware (maybe a driver issue?).  Again, if I use anything BUT a bluetooth sound device, the issue reappears.  It's a real chin-scratcher.
    My specs:
    Mac Pro 2010
    2 x 2.4GHz Xeon
    24GB RAM
    10.8.5
    PCIe SSD system drive **
    EVGA GTX 760 2GB **
    PP CC 7.2.2
** I know the graphics card is not officially supported.  To be clear, and rule out the SSD and the GPU, these issues were present and more prevalent before these two recent upgrades.
Cheers, and thanks for your help

  • General Sluggish Performance - What to do?

I am experiencing terrible performance on all my 3 machines after installing Snow Leopard. I had snappier performance with Tiger - whats going on here? everything is sluggish - applications open slower, safari is slow, performance of VMWare fusion is totally degraded ( even though I am on their latest software 2.05, and more importantly, had better performance in Tiger).
I am having issues with synchronization - lots of error messages for mobileme sync e.t.c
    Any advise here?

Sometimes individual profiles get screwed up. PLIST files get corrupted and accounts cease to function like they should do. Creating a new account that has never been used mitigates against this, and allows you to see if the system is performing as it should, under the new account, or there is another issue we need to look at.
The empty trash problem is an easy one to solve. By Default Snow Leopard comes equipped with Secure Trash Deletion enabled. To Disable this just got into the FINDER preferences on your desktop and click on the 'Advance' Tab. Then untick Secure Trash and Voila, you can empty your trash as before.
If the new account is functioning correctly then your old account is corrupted in some way. Do you experience performance slowdown on specific applications or just generally? On your old account try disabling any applications or plugins/haxies you may have been using. Go through your Application folder and try and make sure you are running the latest version of every application you currently run. Not all applications are compiled ready for Snow Leopard and do not work.
If you can try that for me 1st then retest with your old account please? I understand your frustrated but we can fix this if we approach the problem and look at issues one by one..
Once you have completed those tasks, if your still having problems, we need to start looking to deleting some of your plist (preferences files) from your system, so these are re-created when you next login with your old account. If one of these is corrupt then this could be the cause of your problem.
One last question please? Do you use FileVault? Or did you use Filevault with Leopard before upgrading?
Let me know how you get on?
    cheers

  • 2001 laptop: will it be better off with Tiger or Panther?

My dad has my old 15" Apple laptop (bought in 2001 or so). It's running Panther now, and is quite sluggish. I'm wondering: if I bring it up to Tiger, will it be even slower (if Tiger requires more performance) or better (if Tiger is somehow leaner and more efficient than Panther)?
    Mike

If you have or are willing to learn some experience with using clone utilities,
the external hard disk drive in FireWire enclosure is where the content of
the computer's nearly full drive could be moved via clone; freeing the internal
and allowing the option for a clean sweep of the internal hard disk drive of
the Mini (or any other) by using Disk Utility (Tiger's) from the install disc to
later wipe the drive, overwrite it with zeros, reformat it, and make sure it is
healthy and ready for an all new system.
You can get decent clone utilities that run free, via download online; the
two fairly well known ones are Carbon Copy Cloner and Super Duper.
New versions of both appear to offer some good controls over how the
clone is made and also in re-cloning the bootable copy back to the Mac
from an external at some point, if you have partitions on the external FW
HDD; it can then support multiple clones of your computer's full content.
{Since Tiger retail installer disc does not include the later versions of iLife
a computer installer software packet for a new computer shipped with Tiger
would have included, if you expect to continue using iPhoto, GarageBand,
iDVD or iMovie (as hardware permits) the iLife 06 may be the one to get.
Since iLife 09 and 08 may present issues in older computers lacking the
    correct specification hardware to support the needs of later iLife versions.}
By avoiding the older Panther (a new install from scratch and no upgrade
over the Panther original system; to forgo the Mini's original software) is
the best way to have Tiger in a computer. The installation is much cleaner
and the system parts are correct; as some Panther parts carried forward
in an upgrade and install to Tiger may remain and not be the better ones.
On the other hand, reasons to consider a clone of the older Panther
system on the external drive, is that can boot the computer and all the
older stuff could run better in that more empty hard disk drive; and so
could all the older iLife apps in Panther; plus AppleWorks, and other apps.
Camino browser works well in Mac OS X from 10.3.9 to current versions.
The Opera browser may offer satisfactory support, back to Panther. The
best option is to work on upgrading the slow older computer's hardware
so it can support Tiger as good as it can; if you can find and buy the
    OS X family pack for 10.4.x and then get the standalone updates for it;
you can save having to duplicate downloads of all those parts.
The 2001 'Book, may do adequately; if given all the RAM it can support
(see http://mactracker.ca for various machine specifications) and at a
point in the future, a larger hard drive inside it may be worth the effort.
A family-pack Tiger installer could be a less costly way to install a full
new system from scratch in the computers and also have a bootable
installer disc for later maintenance and support of the resulting systems.
    In any event...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Extremely Sluggish Performance

After initially having MUCH trouble actually upgrading to Leopard, including the disabling of application enhancement software, I had to re-install using Archive and Install - I've worked with Windows and OSX for years and Leopard has been the most ill-prepared, poor quality upgrade procedure I've ever used.
Not only that, but the performance is awful on my 1.67Ghz PowerBook G4. Instead of being a step up, I've stepped down: It's much slower than Tiger, CPU usage bursting through the roof, meaning my laptop runs MUCH hotter, and much more sluggishly. Repairing permissions takes 20 minutes! What a joke!
Unless Apple can provide a solution, I'm wiping my drive and heading back to Tiger... unbelievable, it really is.

Please don't flame me for this, but I've noticed that bar one, everyone on this thread are mostly using G4's? Tiger was built on PPC architecture so it was optimised for that system. I seem to remember that the G4 powerbooks just before the went Intel had buss speeds of just 167MHz? The newer Core Duo 2 processors are now at speeds of 667MHz- quite a significant hike. So it's hardly surprising that you folks are having performance problems.
The crux of it, is that Apple want (and have) to sell computers (fair game), and I suppose also that they want you to upgrade to their faster chipsets too (and why not?- they really move!). Yes of course a PPC version of Leopard has been made available that will just work with older PPC based Macs so I suppose you can't really blame Apple for optimising Leopard for Intel chips can you?
I upgraded from a G4 500 Ti which for a good 5 or so years was a great computer with OS 9.2.2 running well and had a 'decent', if a little slow at times performance with OS X 10.3.9- but the speed was beginning to show when Tiger appeared and I had to throw away the Dashboard altogether because I then had to wait several minutes to get Dashboard working at all.
My recommendation is just to go back to Tiger for now until you can afford to upgrade to the Intel architecture. But the Intel Mac comes really recommended. These machines really do 'fly'. The screens are also so much better and brighter than those old G4 machines. Everything just works so much better.

Hi, I want to downgrade from OSX LEOPARD to OSX TIGER but I have a few questions regarding this. My iMac is originally from Sep 2007 it came preloaded with tiger. I have original install (2) tiger discs version 10.4.10.  I want to know if it is safe and what are the necessary steps to do so. Also by downgrading im wondering if a lot of apps nowadays support tiger for example I have photoshop version 5 and 4 these are very important to me. One last question does anyone know of any reliable virus protection for mac that doesnt slow down your computer? because I have read that a lot of them do so. If anyone can help me I would greatly appreciate it! Here are the specs for my iMac

Most of the time a perception of general slow performance is the result of installing third party junk alleged to speed up, "clean" or "optimize" your Mac, or to look for viruses that don't exist. Ideally you would know what you installed so you can uninstall it, but if you don't know or aren't sure there are techniques such as Safe Mode and creating a temporary user account to confirm that suspicion.
If you open Activity Monitor it may show a process, or processes, that occupy a lot of your system's time.
Slowness confined solely to web browser activity is often the result of an inexorable progress toward websites that demand ever more processor-intensive tasks. If your slow performance is strictly limited to web browsing, you might try disabling Flash by either uninstalling it, or use utilities such as ClickToFlash that allow you to control what Flash content gets loaded. Flash in itself is not inherently evil, but there is nothing to stop websites or the advertisers who pay for them from writing horrible Flash code that can do everything from hogging 100% of your CPU's time to causing random crashes. You can watch Activity Monitor as in the above to correlate these troublesome web pages with performance degradation.
You are correct; if your computer shipped with Tiger you may certainly revert to it. I forgot that Tiger was shipping on new Macs as recently as five years ago. To downgrade it would be necessary to completely erase your hard disk and boot with the Tiger installation DVD, followed by installing it anew. Such drastic measures are not necessary and you are unlikely to be satisfied with the results anyway.
Assuming your system is free of third party parasitic junk attached to OS X in an ill-conceived attempt to improve upon it, that your hard disk drive is sound and the boot volume has enough free space to work with, by far the best performance-enhancing improvement would be to add more memory. Buy as much as your computer can use and that you can afford. 2 GB is not that much any more.

  • Extremely slow performance with Radeon HD 7870

    Hi,
I am using a number of Adobe programs on my new Windows 8 64 bit system, with 16 gigs of ram, an Intel Core i5 2.67ghz, and AMD Radeon HD 7870 2 gig. All the programs (including After Effects and Illustrator) work very well with the exception of Photoshop CS6 64 bit, which has extremely slow performance with Use Graphics Processor enabled in my preferences (which Photoshop selects by default). If I turn off Use Graphics Processor, the slow performance vanishes. If I change Drawing Mode to Basic, there might be a slightly detectable improvement over Normal and Advanced, but it's still horribly slow. The refresh rate seems to be just a few frames per second. Everything is slow: brushes, zooming, panning, everything.
I've tried changing the settings I've seen suggested elsewhere: I switched Cache levels to 2, history states to 10, and tile size to 128k. No effect. Photoshop is currently at the default of using 60% of available ram. Efficiency has remained at 100% throughout all my tests. Also, this slow performance has affected me from the moment I installed Photoshop; it didn't crop up after previous good performance. The problem exists regardless of the size or number of documents I have open. Performance is still terrible even when I create a 500 x 500 pixel blank new canvas and try a simple task like drawing with the brush.
Photoshop is fully up to date, and so are my graphics drivers (Catalyst version 13.1). Any help would be greatly appreciated; at the moment performance is so bad in Photoshop that it's unusable with graphics acceleration enabled. Thanks in advance for replying.

    Great news!
I followed your suggestion, Noel, and uninstalled my drivers with the Catalyst Uninstall Utility (which I hadn't used before), rebooted, reinstalled Catalyst 13.2 Beta 7, rebooted, deleted the PS Prefs, started PS, and now the performance is radically improved!
It baffles me why I would need to do a clean driver uninstall in a new system environment that has only ever had this video card, and is only a few months old, but that action seems to be what's improved the situation. Note that because I deleted the PS preferences, the good performance now occurs with the default Use Graphics Processor enabled, and Drawing Mode set to Advanced (with every feature in the Advanced dialog checked except 30bit display).
Having no reference point, I can't tell for sure if performance is as good as it theoretically ought to be for my system specs, but using the standard 13px brush is only slightly laggy behind the cursor, even if I become reckless and squiggle on the canvas violently. It wasn't just sluggish response before: Photoshop seemed to be in pain trying to draw the line segments as it laboured to catch up to the cursor. That is pretty much gone now.
Much more tellingly, zooming and panning the canvas is like it ought to be, responsive and clean, more or less like it was for me in CS4 with my old Nvidia 9600GT. The poor performance with zooming and panning was the most worrying aspect of the issue. It's a great relief to see these working more properly now.
I have to confess I'm a little embarrassed to have drug you through all this hassle only to discover that something as rudimentary as properly cleaning out the drivers would be the apparent solution. I never would have imagined that doing that, with such a new and stable system, would make any difference, since I don't have a legacy of older drivers dotting my hard drive. In any event, I'm really grateful that you guys took the time to try to help me.
In the interest of completeness, here's the relevant portion of my system info after doing the reinstall steps I mentioned above:

As you can see, the Microsoft Basic Render Driver still appears as a Video Card in the list. This presumably has something to do with Windows 8, and I really don't know if its presence here is still a sign that my card is not being used to its optimal capability. I have a hunch that the slight lag that I am still experiencing with the brush when Use Graphics Processor is on -- totally absent with the acceleration turned off -- implies that Photoshop is still unable to take maximum advantage of my card. I would assume that the brush tool should be more responsive with acceleration on than off, in a rig without any issues, but that's just assumption on my part. If you turn off Use Graphics Processor on your systems, is the brush tool more or less responsive?
But again, panning the canvas with the hand tool is now extremely responsive, without any screen tearing or visible lag, and that's a massive improvement over the total meltdown of performance I was suffering from before.
Thanks again very much for your help. I'm grateful to all of you who took the time to chime in.

  • MacBook Pro 13" Retina running 10.9.5 sluggish performance

My 13" Retina MBP 512GB/8GB RAM running 10.9.5 has been running very sluggish recently. Doesn't appear to be any obvious problems other than Adobe Flash crashes almost hourly while web browsing.  Here is my EtreCheck report:

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
The test works on OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later. I don't recommend running it on older versions of OS X. It will do no harm, but it won't do much good either.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. See, for example, this discussion.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. Try to test under conditions that reproduce the problem, as far as possible. For example, if the computer is sometimes, but not always, slow, run the test during a slowdown.
You may have started up in "safe" mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    PATH=/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/libexec;clear;cd;p=(1266 ' 0.5 0.25 10 1000 15 5120 1000 25000 1 1 0 100 ' 51 25600 4 10 25 5120 102400 1000 25 1 250 40 500 300 85 25 20480 262144 20 2000     Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, a series of lines will appear in the Terminal window like this:
    [Process started]
Part 1 of 8 done at … sec
Part 8 of 8 done at … sec
The test results are on the Clipboard.
            Please close this window.
    [Process completed]
The intervals between parts won't be exactly equal, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.
Wait for the final message "Process completed" to appear. If you don't see it within about ten minutes, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, press the key combination control-C or command-period to stop it and go to the next step. You'll have incomplete results, but still something.
    12. When the test is complete, or if you stopped it because it was taking too long, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I may not agree with them.

  • Bootcamp with Tiger?

Greetings everyone, I'm currently running a 677Mhz, 1GB RAM, TiBook with Tiger on installed. I was wondering if there is any way to run Boot camp with XP Pro on my machine?
I've read that its possible by partitioning my drive and installing Leopard on one and Tiger on another and installing boot camp on the Leopard, then uninstalling Tiger and it boot camp still works?
Otherwise would it be possible just to run the beta that apple released for Tiger originally for boot camp?
Also on a different note, I would like to make my trusty Powerbook to start up and run a little faster. Would it help if I formatted and re-installed Tiger? Or is there a performance installation that only gives me the programs I need? My experiences from working with windows based machines tells me thats what I should do, but since I'm new to the whole Macintosh thing I'm coming to you guys.

Hi, Ronin. Boot Camp only runs on Intel Macs. There's no way to use it on a PowerPC Mac like your Powerbook. To run Windows XP (very, very slowly) on your machine, you'd need to use PowerPC-based PC-emulation software like Microsoft's discontinued Virtual PC.
Regarding performance improvements, go to this page and read the FAQs entitled "Maintaining OS X", "Running Mac OS X Maintenance Scripts", and "Tuning Mac OS X performance".
Reinstalling OS X is practically never necessary. I haven't done it in the three years I've been using Panther (OS X 10.3.x) 12+ hours a day. My Powerbook has run 24/7 for that whole time, restarting only as required after software updates. If you run the maintenance scripts regularly, maintain 5GB or more of free space on your hard drive at all times, repair permissions before and after each software installation that uses the Installer application, and periodically repair your hard drive directory as a preventive measure, your computer will run at optimal speed. A 667MHz machine isn't fast, as you know, but it's entirely serviceable.
If there are any applications in your Applications folder that you never use or expect to use, just drag them to the Trash and empty it. This will give you back whatever hard drive space they occupy, and is a useful step if you need to create more free space on the drive. But it won't have any effect on your computer's speed of operation unless you were woefully and dangerously short of available HD space beforehand.

  • G5 dual 1.8 WON'T shut down with TIGER 10.4.7

Hi all. Updated the G5 dual with Tiger, did the 10.4.7 combo update and it still won't shut down. Have to hold the power button. I've tried creating a new administrator but to no avail. Logging out won't do it either. I upgraded from 10.3.9 for music software reasons--too bad I was "forced up" since 10.3.9 worked fine. My G4 laptop 1.33 has no issues with Tiger at all.
    Any suggestions??

    Contributed by Fumiaki Kawashima a Level 4 here;
There are many reasons to become unable shutting down or restarting from Apple Menu. Some were explained by other posters.
Most importantly, loginwindow (the parent process is launchd.) close out the user session, continue to set the device permissions and user preferences to their defaults in a restart action, or the process power off the system in a shutdown action. However, the issue proves that somewhere in those routines cannot be performed.
Users authentication system seems to be intact because you can restart or shutdown from the login window. However, the admin account authenticated by the Tiger security systems could confuse somehow and affect loginwindow process for setting up the user environment. This may result in interfering with the process for the shutdown and restart mentioned above.
Test if you can shutdown from the keyboard-- Holding down controloptioncommand keys, and then press the eject key.
Check if the loginwindow plists are corrupted. To do this test, remove the followings to temporary folders on the desktop, and shutdown from the keyboard shortcut combination. Restart the computer to test the recurrence.
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist
    /Users/HOME/Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist
Try disabling Login Items for third-party applications via the Accounts system preference, if any.
Verify whether any third-party kernel extensions (including device drivers) interfere with the loginwindow hooks process-- Start up with a Safe-mode, then test the Restart from Apple Menu to see whether it works. Also, boot into a Single-user mode, and test if "reboot" command is available from the BSD layer. The I/O Kit API for software developers provides a shutdown hook so that ".kext" troubleshooting may need to be considered. Besides, some bad programmed extension may not be unloaded automatically at a shutdown or restart.
If the computer is configured with Irish language Input method and/or third-party Irish keyboard, try disabling them to test.
A third-party application or custom script may interfere with the loginwindow hooks for the Shut Down or Restart. For example, if you install an application that prevents casually powering down a system, the Shut Down and Restart buttons may not work. Also, if you install a P2P file sharing application, try uninstalling it.
As last resorts, troubleshoot a bad RAM and consider "Erase and Install" solution.
    OPTION:
Post a part of system.log that indicates events from "localhost kernel[0]: standard timeslicing quantum is 10000 us" to the next same line.
This may help to narrow down because restarting or shutting down the system process can initiate the procedure programmatically by sending an appropriate Apple event to Mac OS X Tiger's system process (loginwindow).
Likewise, check console.log whether any failures is reported.
    Corrections:
Most importantly, the loginwindow (the parent process is launchd.) close out the user session, continue to set the device permissions and user preferences to their defaults in a restart action, or the process power off the system in a shutdown action.
However, the admin account authenticated by the Tiger security systems could confuse somehow and it may impact on the loginwindow process for setting up the user environment. This may result in interfering with the process for the shutdown and restart as mentioned above.
    Addendum:
If you post a copy of system.log, consider to edit the Ethernet interface ID to a fake value.
    API = Application Programming Interface
    Cheers!

  • Lr 5.4 sluggish performance

    Hello friends
My PC config is as follows:
    OS: Win 7 64bit
    CPU: Intel Core2Duo E4300 1.8GHz
    RAM: 5GB DDR2
    Graphics Card: ATi Radeon 4700 512MB DDR5
HDDs: 160GB, 250GB, 500GB (all SATA) and 80GB (IDE aka PATA)
    AV: Avast
    Firewall: Comodo
Lr installation: in a separate partition than the default "C:\"  of 160GB one (but on the same physical HDD).
I am trying this version of Lr, but I find the performance is extremely sluggish. Mainly the problem occurs whenever a real time rendering is required, for example showing the mask overlay, or the noise and sharpening preview (which can be viewed by pressing Alt key while changing the respective slider). I do not use any other software while working with Lr. Compared to the minimum system requirement of Lr, I believe my PC's config (though old) is quite adequate, still why do I get so sluggish performance? Is there any settings that I should change in Lr to get better performance?
    Please help me out.
    Thank you.

    Hi SRoyC,
Well, I'm somewhat outside my area of expertise at this point, since what I'm saying is based on:
    * reading
    * adding 2 (from what I've gathered in forums), + 2 (related experience).
In otherwords I have no direct experience with i7 processors m'self.
    But,
    * I've seen a lot of posts of cpu utilization showing <50% cpu utilization (running Lightroom I mean) on souped up systems, and so far none showing >50% - not for more than a "microsecond" anyway.
    and
I've read that even in gaming systems users are getting less bang from bucks out of money spent for cpus, past a certain point, these days..
In the old days, it was easy: operations were either bound by cpu or disk. Such is no longer the case, and I haven't kept up with modern CPU architecture well enough to understand or explain details, but you can't get much faster Lr performance by faster disk nor beefier cpus these days - there's some other bottle-neck(s)... - maybe somebody else understands better, but beware a lot of people talk like they know when they don't - they just know they know more than you do and have a good story line ...
So, my guess: i7 won't serve so much better than an i5 (or similarly priced AMD chip) that it would be worth sinking your money there even if it's tight, and so if i7 really expensive where you are, maybe money would be better spent elsewhere (or put in the bank..).. - just my guess... - may not even perform better at all, but as I said: I really dunno for sure...
To be clear: abnormally slow performance is almost always caused be some element in your system that is tripping up Lr (and when I say system: I mean it could be a byte in a data file too, as well as hardware/software..), and NOT due to system spec.
Often Adobe remedies by software changes, but still - until then you gotta trouble-shoot your system/files if you want it to run fast.
PS - I run an AMD Phenom II X4 965 (and SSDs for critical drives), and I get full core utilization (i.e. 100% utilization of all 4 cores, for short intervals anyway - most of the time <100%) and good performance - I've heard claims of faster performance, but I've also heard claims of a lot slower performance by people with beefier systems.
PPS - I just reviewed your current system and it is indeed under powered. I recommend at least 4 cores (6 would be better, dunno 'bout 8, for Lr purposes I mean), at least 3GHz (faster is generally better, but again: past a certain point the cpu will just be idle so no gain), at least 8GB RAM (12-16G if you can afford it, usually more ram than that won't help much if at all). If Lr not working optimally on such a system, then it's time to break out the trouble-shooting handbook...
To reiterate: I'm not sure if a 12-core, 5GHz system with 32GB ram would be significantly faster than a 6-core, 3.5GHz system with 12GB ram, maybe not any.
Also: most operations when Lr is lagging are not stressing the disk much (e.g. the time it takes Lr to read an entire raw file and/or catalog photo record is generally not the problem, so SSDs will help a little, but only a little - surprisingly little..). Granted, it depends on the operation - whole-catalog metadata consolidation: yes, but when editing a single photo in develop module - disk speed makes little difference (except a skosh when initially loading).

  • Sluggish performance - Mac Mini and MBP?

I'm experiencing sluggish performance on my Mac Mini with Leopard (upgrade installation) when using the genie effect, expose, spaces, gadgets, 3d dock, etc. It's jerky, as if the animation is missing frames. Is it related to the graphics card? I also find my finder painfully slow opening folders.... Any other people experiencing this? Are there any solutions available?

Exactely the same here. I had to disable the 3D dock alltogether, admittedly not a big loss. Sluggishness seems to worsen with a 'complex' desktop picture (graphics card - texture issue?). Also, and most annoyingly, I find that text rendering seems to be much worse, e.g. look at the system menu with an all black or white desktop background. Or a SoulseeX window on top of some other (Carbon app with opacity set to 90% per default). This is a litte better if I set the display to a '2.2 Television gamma' (I have a 23" Cinema display). One thing that i will try is to boot back into 10.4 and see if it's just my imagination but I am pretty sure it's not.

  • PERFORMANCE WITH OSX 10.5.5

Hi guys, I want to send a feedback about several performance problems that OS Leopard has, which is slow very slow when it comes to starting up the computer, has anyone notice that with every update of Leopard it gets slower and slower, I notice it a lot since tiger, I believe Tiger as more solid OS than Leopard it has much better performance then Leopard.
When you click on the application folder and grab the side bar to drag and notice how it is stuck until it loads then it start to work perfectly fine; his OS has a lot of stuttering problems, I I believe apple is not taking care of this matter because they are more worry about selling than fixing the performances of the OSX Leopard.

This is a user-to-user forum to which Apple does not necessarily pay attention.
Your comments are vague and general and preclude anyone being able to help you.
I cannot agree with your comments about Leopard at all. My three Leopard systems run faster and better than they did with Tiger and I have no stuttering issues or any other issues of any serious import on any of my machines. I find Leopard to be an exceptionally good OS. Not perfect, but far from what you are reporting. I suspect that the issues you have are not from Leopard, but for other reasons. Not enough RAM, HD too full, overdue maintenance, etc.
What maintenance have you performed on your computer? Have you read the console logs, viewed the Application Monitor?
Unless you post specifics, your "feedback" falls on deaf ears.
