Sluggish Reboot after 10.6.8 Update

Since updating my computer brings up a blue screen for 5 minutes or so then goes to the login screen where I have to wait several minutes before I login.  Also, my internet appears sluggish.  Any Suggestions?
Autumn

I think you may find the following Apple Advice letter useful. It infers your installation went poorly and needs to be redone. This may mean re-installing Snow Leopard and then updating using the 10.6.8 Combo Update, Google that to locate it.

  • Client machine force reboot after apply window patch updated

    I found all of client machines will force reboot after window patching updated via SCCM 2012. Have any options in SCCM 2012 can let users to choose reboot their machine after patching ? likely WSUS, users can suspend the reboot request. Pls advice.

    The notification will happen automatically if ConfigMgr installs updates that require a reboot but a reboot is not initiated so there's nothing additional you need to do.
    Note however that allowing users to choose this instead of forcing it is generally bad practice because the updates aren't truly installed until the reboot happens and there have been a couple of updates of the years that cause flakiness until the system
    is rebooted also.
    Why not allow the users to install the updates when they want up until a deadline and then force the reboot at the deadline (if one hasn't already been performed)? This gives the user the control over the process but also forces it to happen if the user
    neglects performing it.

  • IPad mini retina constantly reboots after iOS 8.1 update - help!

    Hello,
    I've downloaded on iPad mini Retina 16 GB iOS 8.1 update and installed it directly from the device (so no iTunes involvement). After it got installed with black apple on white screen (process seemed to be finished) - it started rebooting, but instead of starting up it shows shortly (for just a second) blue screen, after goes black and then reboots again - and all this in constant flux: white screen with black apple - blue flash - black screen - white screen with apple. Connecting to iTunes doesn't make anything - it doesn't recognise the device while in state of reboot.
    What can I do?
    Help!

    Hey there,
    Got exactly the same problem here. Can't even reset/ shut off the device, so it keeps on flashing with the blue screen.

  • MBP will not reboot after 10.6.8 update attempt

    This post may be a bit telescopic, since I'm posting from my phone, but here goes:
    Attempted 10.6.8 update from 10.6.7 on my late 2009 MBP. It went to a blue screen and then sat on that screen with a progress wheel for over an hour. I gave up at that point and simply restarted by holding down the power button and turning back on. It then went to a gray screen with the Apple logo and a progress wheel for a few seconds and then just shut down. I repeated this several times.
    Next, I booted into safe made without any problems. I went to the list of startup programs and chose to hide all of the third party apps, then rebooted into safe mode again.
    Here is where I started having issues. It went to the apple logo and progress bar for a few seconds then just shut down. I attempted several safe boots and got the same result over and over.
    I then put my install CD in the drive and rebooted holding down C. It went to a blank gray screen for about one minute, then spit out the CD and shut down.
    I booted into verbose mode and it did a check and got several errors and then just shut down. I attempted this multiple times with the same result.
    I then booted into single user mode and ran fsck -yf. It gave me several missing thread record and invalid extent entry errors followed by numbers and one line that said "Incorrect size for file GSUIcon.icns"
    Not knowing what to do with this, I typed tail /var/log/system.log to pull up an error report from around the time this may have started. I'm not sure how to get that text to my phone, but it doesn't say a while lot. Basically that a "terminate was called after throwing an instance of 'Security::CssmError'" then "bpf_write(en1) failed: network is down". There is amlittle more, but none of it tells me what really happened. I can send a picture of the error report from my phone if anyone wants to see the whole thing.
    At this point, I cannot boot into safe mode or from a CD, only into verbose or single user mode. Thoughts?
    Thanks folks!

    MetaKine issues with 10.6.8
    MetaKine hands off,  update to 1.3.1 before attempting aninstall of 10.6.8: the old version causes a kernel panic and will notallow booting after an update.  As it loads a kernel extension,safemode also doesn't work.
    Simple solution: boot OSX install DVD, run terminal from utilitiesmenu:
    code, enter and press return
    cd /Volumes/yournormalbootdisk/System/Library/Extensions
    mv HandsOff.kext /
    quit Terminal and reboot
    Then load Hands off app, and run the update it finds.

  • Iphone 5 started rebooting after 7.1.2 update

    Hi! i bought an used Iphone 5 with 7.1.1, so far it worked ok i updated to 7.1.2 and the phone started to reboot constantly after 2-3 minutes of being turned on. I reseted al the settings on the phone, removed the simcard and kept doing it, what can i do?

    Hey elgener4l,
    I would suggest that you use the troubleshooting steps found in the following article to help you address this issue:

    Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
    Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIsand corrosion.
    Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
    After at least 30 minutes, if:
    The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
    The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
    Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
    If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
    If the display turns on, go to step 4.
    If the display remains black, go to next step.
    Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
    If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, seek service.
    Take care, and thanks for visiting the Apple Support Communities.

  • Locked Phone spontaneously reboots after 1.1.1 update

    I have a "normal" iPhone that I updated last night with the 1.1.1 software update. (By "normal" I mean that I hadn't hacked the phone at all). After the update, I downloaded a single song from the WiFi iTunes store and attempted to play the song. The phone spontaneously rebooted. After the reboot I was able to play the newly purchased song.
    This morning the phone won't stop spontaneously rebooting. Typically happens when texting and using the keyboard, but has also happened at other times.
    I reset the phone and this didn't seem to help at all.
    Not sure where to go next - help?!?!?!

    Mine has been doing the same thing. I have yet to figure out what's causing it, and I'm taking it in to my local Apple store tomorrow evening to have one of the Geniuses look at it.
    Besides that issue, the phone part of the phone isn't exactly working as intended: it lights up while near my ear to talk, yet when I pull it away to push a button while still on the phone (like speaker, contacts, etc), the phone goes black, is unresponsive to touching the screen, and pushing the home button does nothing whatsoever. I can still talk with the person on the other end of the line, but I am having to reset the phone by pushing both buttons in order to hang up...this issue started before this last update, and I've tried being patient with it, but now with the random turning off and sticking on the logo screen, I've decided it's time to have it looked at.
    If I find out what's going on with the sticking on the logo and randomly turning off, I will let you know on here so you can get yours back in working order. =)

  • 2006 Macbook won't reboot after losing power during update:

    My older Macbook lost power during software update (battery is dead and only works while plugged in to outlet) and now will not reboot. I get the apple screen with the spinning wheel of doom. Please help! My 5 year old son is very upset that he messed up mommy's computer.

    Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
    Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
    If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
    Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • Computer Self-Rebooting After 10.6.5 Update

    This morning, my computer prompted me to update to 10.6.5. Since then, the computer has self-rebooted twice when idle. I have never run into this behavior before with any version of Mac OS. Any suggestions on what to do at this point would be greatly appreciated.

    Well, I may be showing my naivete here, but shouldn't it be free with AppleCare?
    Most Original MBPs are beyond the 3 years when AC would still be active, so I didn't think to ask if the MBP was covered under extended AppleCare coverage. Even while covered by AC, I've never had a callback, but I'm sure they'll ask for a credit card number if it does cost, and then you can decide.
    As far as SafeBoot is concerned, I may try that next.
    No harm trying, and will clear out some caches that may not have been cleaned in awhile.
    So far, it has not rebooted itself since the permissions repair.
    And another school of thought: don't fix what ain't broke. So you may wish to just run things as they are and if the problem stops, no worries.

  • Imac will not reboot after loading apple software update

  • MAC WILL NOT REBOOT AFTER DOWNLOADING LATEST SECURITY UPDATE

    I downloaded the latest Security Update to my Mac Mini with Snow Leopard.  It downloaded but would not restart.  I finally managed to get it to boot to a bootable external drive and using Disk Utility found the HD was OK but the Preferences way out of wack.  I patched up what I could but when I tried restarting to the original drive it would not work.  I just get the white screen with a circle and stroke through it after a minute with the spinning ball.  I have tried the original start up Disk, pressing C on Startup, but it just spits it out.  I tried to use an older System Disk, one for Leopard but it will not see it.  I tried zapping the PRAM twice to no avail.  Now it won't see the bootable drive either.....
    To me it sound like a massive hard drive fail, maybe nothing to do with the Security update.  Your thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated though.....
    Thanks,
    Stephen

    Hello
    It seems that the update set your preferences to "use PPPOe" while you where using "TCP/IP".
    Go to "System Preferences" and enter the pane whose icon is named "Réseau" in french (maybe "Network" in english.
    Reset your settings to "TCP/IP".

  • Macbook not rebooting after most recent security update

    Hi
    My rather aged Macbook (1.1 I think) has not responded very well to the latest security update and is refusing to reboot, all I get is the grey screen.
    Please help!!!

    Shut it down by holding the power button for five seconds. Then boot while holding the Command + S keys. Hold those keys until you see a black screen with text. Allow that screen to load completely then type fsck -yf and hit return. When you see "The disk has been modified" or "The disk appears to be okay" type reboot and hit return.

  • IPad2 won't reboot after ios6.0.1 update

    iPad is now going through automatic reboot on its own continuously. The apple logo appears, displays for about 60 seconds, then switches to a dark gray screen for 10 seconds, then goes completely black for 10 seconds, then repeats these same three steps.
    What I have done:
    1. Attached my iPad2 via USB connector to my MacBook Pro Retina;
    2. Accepted install for ios 6.0.1 upgrade when the upgrade message appeared;
    3. Waited while the upgrade ran, was verified, then the firmware was upgraded and verified;
    4. The iPad2 began recycling thorough its reboot process;
    5. Allowed this to continue through at least five iterations;
    6. Disconnected iPad2 from Mac;
    7. Performed a restart (held home and power buttons down for 10 seconds);
    8. iPad cycled through the same restart process as above;
    9. Allowed this to continue at least five iterations;
    10. Performed a Recovery
          a. Plugged USB connector to Mac but NOT iPad;
          b. Pressed Home button, then attached connector to iPad;
          c. Allowed restore to reinstall ios 6.0.1;
    11. iPad once again cycled through the same restart process as above.
    I suspected that I might hve gotten a corrupted version of the ios 6.0.1 upgrade, but it verified so I am now at my wit's end.
    HELP!!

    "Have you been turning the iPad off or does the device not accept any user input at all now and just keeps cycling through this rebooting process?"
    The iPad only accepts one input. When the restart is cycling, I have to wait until the screen goes completely dark. When that happens I immediately press both the Power and Home buttons and hold them for 10 seconds. On the screen, the Apple logo appears, just as it does when restarting, When 10 seconds have elapsed the screen goes directly from the Apple logo to black instead of pausing at a gray screen for a second or two before turning off.
    If I just hold the Power and Home buttons down while either the Apple logo screen or gray screen are showing, the hard restart is ignored and the iPad just continues its restart cycling.
    "Can you see where the battery level is on the device now?"
    The only thing that appears on the screen is the Apple logo centered on a gray screen followed by the blank gray screen and then the blank dark screen.
    BTW, again I thank you for this suggestion. I filed a service request with Apple Support and after about 30 minutes they were unable to offer any further suggestions. SInce the iPad is about 2 years old, its hardware support contract has expired. But I was able to get free support because ios 6.0.1 just came out and this problem clearly relates directly to this change. The problem originated when I tried to install it. Apple did suggest I take my iPad to an Apple store to have it looked at. I live about 250 miles from the nearest Apple store so that's not a very enticing option. However I will be visiting the Dallas area in two weeks and will probably take it in to the Apple store there when I have time.
    I'll keep posting results as theiy occur.

  • Mac Pro will not even reboot after 10.5.7 update

    I haven't seen anyone else post about this but I started up my Mac Pro after work yesterday and within seconds the graphics went all glitchy and the machine froze up. After shelling out $50 to hear Apple say, "I don't know whats wrong" after trying to boot to CD, Resetting PRAM, then removing the HD and Superdrive respectively. My machine literally freezes up at the spinning gear every time. Anyone else seeing this?

    Sorry, I was actually chatting from the Apple as it was being worked on, and after my last entry it turned into this....They are replacing my Video Card and HD for free (of course, no Applecare working there). I got no further answers from them, expected from Apple, but they are taking care of me. Not sure as if this was in recognition of me spending $50 for 2 Apple reps letting me know that they had no idea what my problem was and to take my machine in for repair. It's not Apple's MO for admitting what the causes might be, but they are resolving it. It did look to me that 10.5.7 Nvidia love was the actually cause of my video card just self destructing though. Sorry that I don't have anymore, Apple worked themselves into rectifying this in a hurry.

  • MBP won't reboot after an aborted Software Update

    My daughter away at college attempted a software update (10.5.8 Combo). She was also in the middle of loading a software program (matlab). The computer started to make a continuous "crunching" sound and got very hot, so she shut-down the computer before the update was complete. She can no longer boot-up the computer in OSX Leopard. She could not eject the matlab disk in OS X, however, was able to eject the disk through windows. The Vista windows partition (bootcamp) boots-up fine. Does someone have a suggestion to restore OSX? Erase the hard drive? Thanks

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
    Both at once????
    She can no longer boot-up the computer in OSX Leopard.
    What happens when she tried? Has she tried booting with a shift key held down (into "safe mode")?
    Does someone have a suggestion to restore OSX?
    Install OS X 10.5 over the top of what's there ("upgrade", the default). That requires a "retail" OS X 10.5 installation disc. Then try to apply that "combo" updater again.
