Sluggish / slow Apple TV menus

I had this annoyance before upgrading to 3.0 I think, but I can't help feeling it's now worse.
Essentially, menus are just sluggish and slow to respond to clicks on the Apple Remote. Sometimes clicks will register instantly, but more often than not the unit takes a second or so to respond to my button presses. The LED registers clicks so it rules out a problem with the remote. It's just like using a computer in which the CPU is maxed out.
Anyone else suffering from this?

Thanks for the good suggestions. I'm running in 720p, so I don't think that'll be the issue. I wonder if it's a network problem, so I'll try disconnecting it in the morning.
One thing of note is that almost all my media used through Apple TV is streamed over 802.11n from a Mac elsewhere in the house. The signal strength is decent, but do you think the sluggishness could be caused by so much of the data coming across the wireless network?

  • Firefox (3.6.10) is very sluggish/slow and hangs up

All of a sudden Firefox (3.6.10) is very sluggish/slow and hangs up
I've been using Firefox (very actively) for over a year now and all of a sudden (yesterday) it began to act very sluggishly. On sites I have always visited frequently it hangs up for periods of 15-90 seconds or more, won't scroll down, won't open hot links, slowly opens new tabs ...
I rebooted my PC (multiple times), powered down my modem and router, ran a Norton disk optimization - essentially making sure it was not an outside factor effecting Firefox's performance. (Note: I am using a cable connection.)
I then ran a side by side speed comparison with Internet explorer (on my 2nd monitor) going to the same web sites, and IE had no problems/hang-ups.
FYI I only have a couple of add ins/extensions (Java, Microsoft Framework, Norton, No Squint, & RealPlayer) and none of those are new within the past few weeks at least.
Any ideas on what could be causing this? How to fix? (As I much prefer Firefox to any Microsoft product.)
    Thanks.

Yes, FF gets sluggish from time to time. Sorry but it's the fact! FF also cannot render some websites properly (especially v3.6.10). I'm a big fan of all Mozilla software but FF 3.6.10 makes me very disappointed.

  • Clicking/switching tabs and menus has sluggish/slow performance.

Clicking or switching through tabs has sluggish performance. Going through Menus and Options is sluggish too even with one blank tab opened. I doubt that it is my laptop because browsing through files and folders is fast and immediate. Google Chrome has a huge difference in performance.

Having the same problem. After LOTS of clicking and experimenting, here's what I think I've found:
    # The tab performance when not maximized was much better.
    # Outside of safe mode, the Add-ons tab appears to be FAR more sluggish than any other tab. No specific extension or plugin is slowing it down. It simply lags.
    # Switching between Mozilla sites seems to be slightly sluggish compared to switching between tabs for other sites
    # Disabling the "Tab Utilities" extension (ithinc) made the performance when maximized equivalent to the non-maximized performance. This leads me to believe that the difference between the two is caused by this plugin. The Add-ons Manager tab, and Mozilla sites were still relatively slower.
    # Disabling all other extensions offered no additional improvement, but, strangely, starting in safe mode did. While inside safe mode everything is super snappy.
    # I have a sizable list of extensions, including a large number of disabled extensions (most of which I can't "remove" because they are from 3.6)
The time periods on #5 are very small, on the order of perhaps 80-100 milliseconds. Just long enough that you do a double take and wonder if it was really slower, or just your imagination, but then when you compare against changing tabs in chrome, it's clear that you aren't crazy. There is no noticable difference between safe mode and Chrome, but there IS between non-safe-with-everything-disabled and Chrome.
Is it possible that this is caused by some sort of broadcast to all plugins about the tab change? If so, could this broadcast be completed asynchronously, or else AFTER the tab switch? This is really a perception issue. To feel "fast" to the user, the click should result in instant visual feedback. If my plugins want to know something about the change, I'm satisfied with letting them wait until after '''I''' find out about it.

  • IPhone "Remote" App for Apple TV Has Become Sluggish, Slow to Respond

(Earlier today I posted this question on the "iPhone" section of this thread but perhaps it's more appropriate here.)
I've searched this and other forums and have yet to see the issue I'm having addressed. After successfully installing and using the iPhone "Remote" app to control my Apple TV, its performance has become erratic. While selecting and/or swiping actions were instantaneous, they're now delayed, sometimes by four or five seconds. My Apple IR remote still works perfectly. Also, the Remote app on my iPhone works fine on the TV set up in various Apple Stores I've visited. A clue that may be relevant is that my RF Dish receiver remote is a bit slow now, too, although not as bad as the WiFi-driven iPhone Remote app. It seems that something in the room is creating these problems (there are no fluorescent lights) and all worked fine months ago. Anyone have any ideas on what might be causing this?

ok well it seems unlikely that your issue is with the appletv itself.
    could well be wifi interference.
any cordless phones or cordless doorbells, or any new cars turned up close by with remote car alarms, or a new microwave (or old one starting to fail) ? all this sort of stuff can kill wifi.

Encountered this too and only recently. In my case appears to coincide with downloading most recent version of iTunes.

  • Fix for slow Apple TV sync or stream (port 3689 alert)

If you use Intego VirusBarrier X6, syncing or streaming to your Apple TV may be extremely slow or stop altogether. Your network connection may also be broken. The same may also be true with other virus protection or internet security software.
In many cases, you may receive an alert message saying: Check that any firewall software running on this computer has been set to allow communication on port 3689.
Here is how to modify your VirusBarrier Firewall to open port 3689. If you use other security products, you will need to check with the vendor for specific instructions.
    1) In VirusBarrier X6, go to the Firewall section and set the Mode to Advanced.
    2) Click the "+ icon" at the bottom left of the window. This will add a new "untitled settings" entry to the list on the left of the window.
    3) Right click or control-click in the rules window (the blue and white striped area of the window). Choose "Insert Standard Set" and select whatever setting you were using before (for example: Client Only, Client Local Server, which is the default setting). This will insert the standard rules for that set.
    4) Now you must create a new rule for the Apple TV. Click the + button (bottom left). The new rule window will appear.
-- You can name it anything you like, but something that tells you what the rule is for would be recommended.  For example: Apple TV.
-- Set the source as "Local Network", the destination should already by "My Mac".
-- The 'Service' option is where you assign what service this rule applies to. However,  there will not be an Apple TV option in the list. You must create a new service. Click the '+ sign' next to the services drop down menu. A "new service" window will appear. Name the service something appropriate for it's function (for example: Open port 3689), set the Protocol to TCP, click Single Port, and enter 3689 for the Port.
-- Leave the Interface set to Any, and make sure Allow is enabled.
-- Allow should be enabled, then click OK.
    5) This new service you just created will now be at the bottom of the Rules list of your new "untitled settings". You MUST drag it to the top of the list (making it rule number 01).
    6) Click the button next to your new "untitled settings" to activate them. Apple TV should now be able to sync (or stream) without problem.

I am having the same problem since upgrading to ATV 2.3 and iTunes 8.0.2.20 for a PC. Since people are having this issue with Mac iTunes, my guess is that it is ATV 2.x that's the problem. Everything stopped syncing as far as I could tell. Apple Support was totally unhelpful. Wanted me to pay for extended care even since I bought my ATV last year. Told me it was "buyer beware" with respect to updates, and that my only recourse was to role back to the factory default (version 1.1) - that is unless I wanted to pay for support. So I asked her if she'd heard of the problem, and she said no. Excuse me? What would I be paying for then? Why can't this company support the piece of junk software they just released??? They are shooting themselves in the foot because now that I've rolled back to 1.1, I can't buy the new content they're pushing from the iTunes store. I've never been this put off by a company and the false advertising that "it just works."

  • Another slow Apple TV thread

I know this has been raised before but im largely out of ideas.
I have an ATV (3rd gen) - it's up-to-date software wise.  I am using the ATV plugged into the net via ethernet.
I have a 100mb connection (photo attached) - DNS servers are set to my isp's preferred settings...
    I have reset/restored...without any difference.
    Key question.
Why the **** is it so SLOW to download tv shows? Seriously, it takes 15-20 minutes to buffer at times. While at other times it downloads and buffers within 30 seconds.  Is there something wrong with Apple servers?
In the words of an ex-girlfriend, "It's not me - it's you".
    Please fix.

    Hi, thanks for replying.
    In relation to your questions:
    diesel vdub wrote:
Is the slowness specific to iTunes downloads? Netflix? YouTube?  or all streaming content?
Has the ATV been reset or restarted?
Has the router been power cycled?
Has the ethernet cable been replaced?
Has a different port on the router been tried?
    1) Just itunes downloads. Others (we don't have Netflix in Aus...well, leagally anyway) work fine.
    2) Yes - see above email
    3) Yes - but im not sure what the point of that would be given the ATV isnt working on the router as it's through an ethernet cable.
    4) Yes and tested - hence the speed test to show the slowness isn't from the cable but from the connection to itunes servers.
    5) No, Ill give that a shot but im not optimistic.

  • Good wireless in house, slow Apple TV in downloads and syncing.  ATV issue?

OK - I just did a internet Ping test and bandwidth test and have found that my overall bandwidth is good, but my ATV is still very slow on downloads and syncing.
My bandwidth is over 6.6mbps and ping rates are nearly 45ms.
Here is my issue - I often have no images show up on ATV when I am browsing the movies. I also have to restart for lack of response to the remote about every other day, sometimes every day.
Am I looking at my wireless in the house (running Time Capsule) or is this an ATV issue? I have good overall connectivity and internet downloads via iTunes, etc.
    Your insight is appreciated.

You may or may not already have your network set up correctly, it's just that I can't tell from what you have said.
I have a main router provided by my ISP, I have several other Airport Extremes and Airport expresses connected by Ethernet, all set up to bridge the network created by the main router.
Each maker has their own settings, but bridging should be reasonably obvious. In simple terms my main router distributes IP addresses to all devices, the Airports bridge that network by passing these addresses to the devices from the main router. A base station that isn't in bridging mode will distribute its own addresses to the devices connected to it.
I don't really follow your next point.
instruction for configuration vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, the best course of action here is to refer to the manual. If everything is set up properly the addresses of everything on your network will have identical sets of numbers for the first 3 of 4 groups of numbers that make up an address, the last set must always be different. I think the part you are referring to with your DD-WRT is the option to have Ethernet and wifi bridged or not.
Some routers may be easier to configure than others, but generally speaking they should all work with the Apple TV. 5Ghz is less likely to suffer interference but it is much more likely to be blocked by solid objects, it may or may not be an advantage.

  • Firefox 3.6.7 and 3.6.8 are sluggish, slow and unresponsive.

I am experiencing slow web page loads on all web pages using 3.6.7 and 3.6.8 on Mac, Windows and Linux Ubuntu and CentOS. Numerous websites recommend turning on network pipelining, upping the max requests, and disabling IPv6 dns, using the about:config command. That solved my problem, but beyond voiding my warranty ;^(, it also makes some ipv6 web content inaccessible. On a fresh Firefox install I am encountering wait times of thirty to one hundred seconds per page load, totally unacceptable in my workplace. At home, page loads are between fifteen and thirty seconds, and I am running dual core processors. The support community seems convinced that this is an IPv6 issue, so maybe there is a bug in that area. I don't want to think that IPv6 is going to slow the internet to a crawl.
Anyway the recommended solution that worked cross-platform is to disable IPv6 using about:config, set "network.dns.disableIPv6" to "true."

I've been having the same issue for many weeks. Intermittent freezes where the mouse cursor locks for up to 10 seconds at a time. Random 5-10 second pauses between opening adjacent tabs and just plain intermittent sluggish response. The frequency of slothfulness "appears" to be increasing with time. Either that or my patience is decreasing. I'm using the same box (Intel P4 2.8GHZ/3GB ram) I've had since installing version 6.xx of Ubuntu. Firefox was always been speedy until Ubuntu 10.04. No problems with Opera or Epiphany. Obviously they have nowhere near the feature set of FF so using them is a downgrade in convenience. However the FF performance has degraded sufficiently to where I'm finding myself using Opera more often than not. I've tried all the conventional fixes including the reportedly 'tried and true' '''disable IPv6 using about:config, set network.dns.disableIPv6" to "true."'' method to no avail.
Let's hope a rev is soon released addressing the problem or one of the other browsers begins to offer the same nifty add-ons as FF (fat chance).

  • Slow apple tv download

Seriously 57 hours to download a movie on apple tv ???   Have 15 Mbps service, which is about as fast as it gets without a T1 line...
Ok - very unlikely to do this a second time.

The Apple TV itself is the bottleneck.  The problem is not bandwidth.
My home theatre system uses Apple TV for most content.  I also use a MacMini for the few DVDs I have and for EyeTV television recording.
Same as all the posts to this thread - performance slowed badly the last few months.
However, I notice that if I download rentals and purchased movies through iTunes on the MacMini, it works as the Apple TV did before.  That is, start the download and wait a minute or so and then watch the movie end to end without interruption.
Also, iTunes allows me to cache the full movie if I give myself a few minutes prior to the time I want to watch something.
    Not great.  But it works.

  • Slow Apple TV

    Hi!
My Apple TV is suddenly really slow.
Every thing worked fine up until a month ago or so.
When I try to airplay a movie, (from iPhone, iPad, iMac) it takes for ever to load. And when I mirror my iMac through airplay to my tv, it lags big time.
Also, just updated it (today) to the latest update, but it still lags.
If anyone knows what causes it, please let me know.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hey vazandrew,
    Thanks for the quick responce!
So, i tried istumbler, and I'm not sure what I'm looking at (I'm not too much of a techy). istumbler only works when my iMac's wifi is turned on, but I have the iMac hooked up to the Airport extreme with a ethernet cable, so I don't use wifi on the iMac.
But when i did turn the wifi on it showed my main network and guest network twice (2 of one and 2 of the other), I think its showing the main network running on 2.4GHz and 5GHz and the guest network running on 2.4GHz and 5GHz since it has the dual-band 2.4GHz and 5GHz (but i think you knew that already) (and the letters got big and i don't know how to change it back :$).
now the figures that istumber showed, i'm not sure what to make of them.
here is a print screen of what it shows.
    [file://localhost/Users/martinvendrame/Desktop/Screen%20Shot%202013-09-26%20at%2 04.58.02%20PM.pdf]
turns out i cant get a pic here (would it help if you saw a print screen of it?)
Also, i googled the probelm (which is not always the most reliable source) and found a bunch of people with that problem but no solution yet. I'm thinking its the Apple TV but I'm not an expert.
I hope this is more details that will help you.
    Thanks again for your help!

  • Ios 8 Sluggish & slow

I have an iPhone 4s & recently "upgraded" to the new ios 8.0.2 software & I have found it to be very sluggish & very slow when opening all of my apps as well as my browser.. I've talked to a few friends who've updated their software on their iPads/ iPhones & they are having the same problem.. So my question is will this problem be fixed & if not is there anyway to revert back to ios 7.1.2 & if not does anyone want to buy an iPhone 4s with suspect software?
Also why isn't there an ios software community?

  • G5 running sluggish/slow

In the past month or so I've noticed my G5 (Dual 2Ghz PowerMac, 5GB RAM) has been running sluggish. Regular tasks are frequently giving me the spinning beachball and everything is taking longer to launch.
I've repaired permissions multiple times but that hasn't helped.
Diskspace is no where near full (135GB+ available).
    Any ideas?

Since you are backed up, the first thing I'd do is see if disabling some dashboard widgets makes a difference.
If not then try repairing the directory as my FAQ explains:
    http://www.macmaps.com/directoryfaq.html
If not the directory, then try to see if some third party peripheral is slowing you down.
If not, how old is the computer?

  • IPhone 3g sluggish/slow after 3.0 update

My iPhone 3g has been performing noticeably slower since I updated to 3.0. Two of my friends have been experiencing the same issues especially with SMS/email. Are other people having this problem and does anyone know of a solution?

I don't know if it's a solution for you, but something that has always worked for me whenever I've seen something unusual/unexpected/different/etc on my iPhone is a 'reset' - holding down both the sleep/wake and Home buttons together until the Apple logo appears and ignoring the 'Slide to power off' prompt and then releasing both buttons and waiting until the iPhone restarts......
I've noticed on other threads about this issue that the 'reset = 1st-stop' approach seems to have been forgotten, so good luck!

  • Extremely slow Apple TV sync

I have begun to sync my iTunes to my Apple TV. Everything has gone as planned except that seems to take about 10 minutes per song- literally - to sync. At 2000 songs this will take a long time. Is this normal??
    tks

Welcome to the  Discussion Forums.
No it's not normal, but since your songs clearly are syncing and the sync is not simply hanging, I'd suspect your network. Are you connected by wifi, could you be experiencing interference or perhaps you have a weak signal. Have a look in the network menu on the tv to check your signal strength,
