Sluggish timeline movements

Hello everyone, I'm new in the forum and this is my first post.
I have a particular (I think the "only") problem in Premiere Pro CS5.5
When I try to move between the entire timeline the "screen update" is so slow, take between 2 or 3 seconds to show in the Program Monitor the video when I click in a clip in the timeline. Also if I want to move the "current-time indicator" a little bit fast the Program Monitor just freezes and when release the "current-time indicator" take also 2 or 3 seconds to show the clip where the "current-time indicator" is placed. That's is annoying and really lose too time to do that.
I thought that was problem of the Mercury but activated o desactivated is the same problem, also thought that was problem of the Hard Drive, but with internal or external is the same thing, and I just install Avid Composed to try it (in trial version) and work really fast when move the "current-time indicator", so the hard drive isn't the problem.
In CS4 never had this problem.

The realtime, the all other features is works perfectly fine, I mean, I'm very very happy with CS5.5, is amazing, but want that my Premiere run very well ...
Oh! I forget, Sorry for my poor English
Greetings from Mexico

Hello Jorge!
I have a very similar laptop, the Asus G73jw and edit the MOV files from the Canon Rebel T2i....which I believe are the same as your camera's. I am using PPro CS 5.03.
I installed more memory in my machine.....increased it to 14GB from the original 8GB.  I would have put 16GB in, but, the last slot is not user accessable,( under the keyboard)...all works fine and it is dual channel memory. I have the i7 740QM CPU and in trying to reach the best "throughput" for this laptop, I replaced the original boot hard drive with a Corsair F120GB SSD....it does over 200MB/second read and write, as compared to a standard 7200rpm HDD, which is around 100MB/ second....the internal drives will run at SATA II speeds on this machine, ( the Sandy Bridge i7's will run faster at SATA III speeds).
I also installed a second Corsair F120 SSD in the laptop to maintain the higher throughput speed of both internal drives, even though the penalty is far less capacity and higher cost. In addition, using the USB 3 external port, I have a 500GB Seagate Momentus Hybrid drive attached via a USB 3 dock in order to achieve Harm's recommended 3 drive setup. ( Although using the SSD in this dock limited the speed to ~ 100MB/sec !!!....so much for the highly touted USB 3 speed...a big disappointment!!)
You can see my  test results on the PPBM5 benchmark website that Harm and Bill have created to compare the speed of various machines and configurations. My laptop earned a 372 second total time under the name " JP's Asus G73." Surprisingly, the score is higher than a lot of desktops that are listed. I do not have the " lagging" problem I saw on your video...I suspect your hard drive setup needs to be faster. Harm and Bill have pointed out that in a desktop system, SSD's are not beneficial...however, in a laptop that has two SATA drive bays without the benefit of RAID, using the Corsairs F series , ( which have a good read and write throughput) may improve your performance. You can run the PPBM5 test on your machine to see how it is working.....there are other i7 740QM machines listed on the results that tested much slower due to not enough RAM, and slower HDD configurations.
In any case, working with these highly compressed codecs on a laptop will not be as good as would be on a fast desktop....you may need more RAM and maybe one or two SSD's in your machine to get the maximum performance out of it. Good Luck!

  • Premiere Elements 10 sluggish Timeline...why?

I just built a new computer with:
    -Windows 7 Professional
    -Intel Core i7-3770
    8GB DDR3 RAM
    SanDisk 128 SSD
    WD Blue 1TB 7200RPM HDD
GTX 650 1GB (I know not necessary since PreE doesn't use it for rendering)
Specifically, when I am using the timeline, zooming in and out, moving it to the left and right, it becomes very sluggish.  Also, when I move the time line cursor it lags behind significantly. My Project setting is on DV - Standard 48kHz. My video is in AVI format approxamatly an hour long. This is very surprising since before I was editing on my 2009 Macbook Pro 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 8GB, 500HDD.  On my Macbook I was editing Raw DV footage with Hard Disk, Flash Memory Camcorders - Standard 48kHz project setting.  I had no lag what so ever in respect to what I experienced on my PC build. What could be the matter with it? During editing, I have the CPU meter and GPU meter(I know PreE doesn't use GPU for rendering) on as well but that's about it. I upgraded my editing computer to experience faster rendering and export times not to have to trade off for a sluggish timeline experience! Help!!!

Recent generations of SSD's are quite good, and their capacities have gone up, plus the price has gone down. Their reliability for long-term writing has also improved greatly. Having one as the system/boot disc is a good move, and I recommend having all programs, the OS and probably the Page File (Windows Virtual Memory) on one.
I use HDD's for both my Project and Scratch disks, and then another for my media, for a 3x arrangement, i.e. C:\SSD, D:\SATA III HDD, E:\SATA III HDD.
Spreading the I/O load will usually greatly improve overall performance, and that appears to be what you have done already. The performance gain is biggest, if one goes from just one disc, to two, with a much smaller impact, if they add 3, or more. Personally, I like the 3x (or more) arrangement, but the Bang For The Buck is less, than just adding a second physical HDD. At a point, there are diminishing returns, and when one gets to a bunch of multiple drives, even in RAID, the user does not see THAT much of an improvement, though they do show up in benchmarks.
Unless you have partitioned any of your drives, I do not think that your C:\SSD and D:\SATA (II, or III) HDD's will be the bottleneck. You don't have any partitons, do you?
For performance of the GUI, I find that the video driver (so long as one has at least 1GB VRAM) is the first bottleneck. Next can be installed RAM, but with a 64-bit OS and at least 8GB RAM, most RAM bottlenecks will not show up, until one goes to Share/Publish the Timeline. Then, more RAM can improve things, but that is not seen in the GUI performance.
You have already ruled out the video driver (the main cause for GUI display issues), and have a good I/O sub-system, so I am at a loss to explain what you are seeing. Maybe some real hardware gurus will see a bottleneck, and can advise you on how to handle things.
    Good luck,

  • While trimming a clip in my timeline, the entire timeline moves with my trim. How can I stop that and leave a gap in-between clips?

While trimming a clip in my timeline, the entire timeline moves with my trim. How can I stop that and leave a gap in-between clips? Also when I use my blade it only leaves a dotted line in the clip. How can I make that a solid line? I do a lot of flickering in my videos and don't need that some what of a snapping effect while I edit. Please help me someone. I believe i upgraded from FCP 10.0.1 to 10.0.3 and before it never did this.

Mark an In point and an Out point (which creates a Range) and hit the forward delete key (Replace with Gap.) On a MacBook, you'll probably need to hold down the Fn key and type the Delete key (or, I think you might be able to use Shift-Delete as the same command). On an iMac/Mac Pro keyboard, it's the key just to the left of 'end' or the next key above the left arrow key.
You can use the Range tool (hold down the R key and click drag over your clip) or the Blade tool to cut at the in and out (then select the cut and replace with gap).
You can also go into Commands > Customize (command-option-K) and assign a different key to Replace with Gap.
If you need to ripple edit the ends (cut), create a small section that is Gap, and hold down the T key while you use the mouse to click drag both ends (double sided trim cursor) of the cut.
Don't worry about the dotted line blade... That just lets you know that the frames on either side of the cut are continuous, or sequential — nothing has been moved yet. Once frames from either side of the mark have been cut, it becomes a full fledged cut resembling a separate clip.

  • Suggestions for VERY sluggish timeline?

Does anyone have any ideas for how to remedy a very sluggish timeline? I have searched this forum and I've seen problems with FCP 5 and Tiger that sound similar to mine, but I'm running FCP 4.5 and OS 10.3.9.
My timeline has slowed to the point where I can barely use the drag and drop functions anymore. When I do, and two clips butt up next to eachother, I get the pinwheel for a few seconds before I can drop the clip and when I do, it generally shifts past where I wanted to drop it - even in snapping mode!
You can forget about using slip and slide - these have been rendered useless. Right now, I am forced to use the blade tool, cut the selected clip out of the timeline and paste it in where I want it. What a pain!
My timelines are not that long - only 20 minutes. the only suspicion I have is that all my media is running off of firewire drives, rather than internals. But it's the internal drive that is spinning when the timeline hangs up. The other thing I've noticed is that this doesn't happen nearly as badly when I am working on a 30fps timeline, as opposed to the 24fps timeline that I am working in now.
Any ideas? It's not a processor issue (dual 2.5 ghz) or a RAM issue (2.5 ghz RAM). What's up?!???!

There are many reasons why we ALL get dropped frames on playback. Some have been addressed here.
For me, I always seem to get them when I'm viewing on external monitor and don't have things rendered properly. A small crossfade that "looks" rendered but is only actually 'kind-of-rendered' so it plays in RT can easily clog playback so you get dropped frame warnings. Do you have ANY non rendered things in the timeline? If you don't want to go through and trash your render files and re-render... at least do Command-A -- Option-R... the Option R should render out everything to FULL render and not just what FCP things it needs to render it to to get it to play in your RT settings... FCP's often wrong there.

  • Moving one item in timeline moves keyframes on other items!

    a new Title project.
I have 4 title/text items in a group, in staggered formation in the timeline.
    -- group
    -- item 1
    -- -- item 2
    -- -- -- item 3
    -- -- -- -- item 4
I'm setting text style keyframes for each of the items; eg, Opacity, to fade in/out.
I'm very careful to select only the one item in the timeline that I want to work with.
I then move the playhead to the timepoint I wish to work with, add a new keyframe for the properties I'm dealing with, and change the properties.
but after doing this for all 4 items, moving any one of the items along the timeline moves not only that item's keyframes but also keyframes from other items, even ones outside of the group.
is there a linking function that I'm unaware of?
    or is this a bug?
    or...
    any ideas?
    Motion 5.0.7
    OS X 10.9

I just finished my first Title project, and I'm very pleased with the result.
I'm even more thrilled that after bringing it into FCPX as a Title, I can transform/scale/move elements around to suit the resolution/parameters of the project I'm working on. it works GREAT!
very happy, despite the hiccups earlier on.
moving the objects via the Mini-timeline definitely solved the keyframe problem for me.
    cheers,

  • Timeline movement as in iMovie 11

    I am a convertee from iMovie 11.
I am use to having the timeline movie along with the playback in the editing function. Is there a way to have the playback move instead of the line always moving to the right off the screen?
    Thanks,

One can hope. It's the #1 requested feature on some web sites that compile such things.

  • Sluggish timeline and glitching/freezing program monitor in Premiere Pro CC 8.1

    Hi all,
I've recently switched from CS6 to the 2014 Adobe CC due to a student license expiring. I'm also somewhat new to r3d workflow so chances are I may be doing something wrong.
I've worked on one other project with a mix of r3d and DSLR footage in CS6, but this is my first time cutting with red footage in Premiere CC.
*Apologies in advance for the novel, but I figured I'd be as thorough as possible to hopefully help get this issue resolved for myself any anyone else who's experiencing this.*
I'm cutting a 9:30 "party mix" in a music video style edit. So far I've had several (seemingly random) issues and glitches, that have been making my life exceptionally difficult and this 10/30 deadline exceptionally scary.
I'm working with content that we captured using exclusively RED Epic Dragon, and Epic Mysterium cameras. We recorded with several different frame rates, with varying resolution, compression, and aspect ratios. Project was set in-camera to 23.976.
    Issue #1
I've created a nearly two hour, organized roll of sub-clip selects in a RED R3D 2K 23.976 16x9 timeline, in which i'll use to browse my raw media when sequencing on a timeline stacked directly below.
Often times when pulling clips from one timeline down to the other, the over-all responsiveness of the program will become ultra sluggish. Causing a clip (that's being dragged/placed) to lag heavily, maybe a couple seconds behind my cursor. This issue will often resolve itself after maybe 5 minutes or so, but makes fluid sequencing rather difficult.
    Issue #2
The other issue I'm having is a glitchy or completely unresponsive program monitor. Again this issue appears to be totally random, and seems to happen most when I'm deep into some really intense sequencing/ clip arrangement, and scrubbing quickly.
Usually a portion of a single clip (or sometimes a couple clips) will freeze up in the program monitor while I'm scrubbing over them on the timeline. This will sometimes cause them to freeze all together during playback as well as cause surrounding clips to lag a bit (maybe 4-8fps).
I'll scrub back over the problem area and sometimes get a solid green bar halfway through my image, usually right before the program monitor just reads solid black throughout the entire timeline. This issue is temporarily resolved by restarting the program (about every 15-30 minutes).
    Issue #3
As I'm scrubbing I'll also experience heavy glitching with both my image and the program monitor GUI itself. However, this issue typically wont affect playback.
I've uploaded a quick camera-phone video of this issue as it's a little tough to describe Program monitor glitch - YouTube
I know the timeline is un-rendered in this sample, (but this issue happens either way).
Two painstaking weeks later, I've finally completed the first pass.
Working on revisions now, and ultimately I'd like to copy paste the sequence into a 4K timeline for before After Effects work and export.
I tried pulling it into a 4K timeline (with playback set to 1/8 res) and the issues stated above got 10x worse.
Sticking to the 2K timeline for now (with playback at 1/4 res)
P.S. I'm also cutting a much simpler corporate project with 5DMKIII footage and having no real issues.
    As for my rig,
    I'm running Adobe Premiere CC 2014 v8.1
Freshly installed Windows 7 Professional SP1 PC Desktop
Freshly installed Samsung 1TB SSD running my OS and Adobe CC
    Intel Core i7-2600k CPU at 3.4GHz (8CPUs) - Watercooled
16GB Ram (3gb allocated for other programs)
    Nvidia GeForce GTX 570 4GB GDDR5 - 3.40.62 Drivers installed
Pulling media from 2x 3TB Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM drives, striped at RAID 0
    Thanks for reading!
    -Sam

So it seems to be behaving slightly better in "Software Only"
Though slightly less frequently, I'm still running into the issues stated above, mostly issue #2.
I also have a new problem to add to this thread as I'm starting to pull clips into After Effects.
First being that (again, seemingly random) dynamic-linked clips decide not to show up on the timeline in AE, and then seem to vanish from the program monitor in Premiere as well.
As you can see in the screenshots attached- After Effects see's the media itself from which the clip came from, however it won't show up in the monitor.
I'm also having issues where I'll render the Premiere project with the dynamic linked clips that DO work, and then as soon as I restart the program, those previews are gone and I have to re-render the the AE Linked comps.

  • Unstable timeline movement using FireWire audio (MOTU 828mk3)

I'm using a 32 bit system with Windows 7 Home Premium and Service Pack 1. An AVI that I captured with my DV camera will not play in Premiere Elements. I can see the time line making a loop every 10 seconds or less whenever I use FireWire for audio. If I use Windows Sound Card, it plays well.
The same AVI plays well on Windows Media Player with or without the FireWire audio interface.
I'm new to Adobe but have used AVID Liquid Pro before. It seems like I'm missing a CODEC but I'm not sure if that is the problem. NOTHING plays right with the FireWire Audio selected regardless of the many settings I have tried.
    Thanks,
    Joseph Balsamo

    I'm using Premiere Elements 12.
The 828mk3 is a FireWire audio interface. I'm actually using IEEE 1384 connection vs USB. I use it for my audio (PC to mixing board) mostly for Sonar.
I found out today during a chat with Adobe that Premiere Elements does not support MOTU. That must be my problem.
I am not trying to capture, just play an AVI in the timeline. The timeline does not move smoothly enough to do that without audio and video problems. However, the same AVI will play in the organizer of Premiere Elements. Also the same AVI also plays in Media Player. I also have no problems with audio or video using YouTube or Vimeo or any video on the web with Chrome or IE 11.
I am using Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit with Service Pack 1.
    828mk3 Hybrid Firewire Audio Interface
I am told that Premiere Pro can support MOTU. I just don't have a 64 bit system for it yet.
    Thanks,

  • CC2014.1 Vers8.1 Caravan crashes every time i try to play or drop a clip on a timeline ( .mov and .mp4 )

I've just moved to CC today, I have used CS5 for the last few years.
After importing my footage and arranging in bins, every time i try t even play a lip or drop one onto a timeline the program crashes.
It won't even play the clip in the small preview window, but it does give me a preview frame.
Audio opens up fine and plays fine and drops to timeline fine, however it splits the clips into L+R, is there a way to stop that as it happens even on a mono track?
I'm sure it's something silly with  setting i haven't done or something but can anyone help?
Happens on .mov and .mp4 files.
Even if i bring in an old project from CS5 it will allow me and the timelines look fine, but if i try to replace a clip from the project folder to the timeline it crashes!

  • Timeline: Move all rightward clips to right

I discovered a useful keyboard shortcut or tool or something which allowed me to select, or point to, a clip in the timeline and then get it and all clips to its right, up to the end of the sequence, to move rightward, so creating a gap, even when the end of the sequence was off the right hand end of the timeline. But I can't find it. Any clues please?

I believe you're referring to the track select tool.
Hit the 'T' key on the keyboard to select the tool, then keep hitting it till your cursur looks like two arrows pointing to the right. Then you can click on one clip and it will select everything on all tracks to the right of that clip. You can drag this selection wherever you want to put it.

  • Can I make the timeline move around the playhead in FCP

I'd like not to have to chase the playhead around in FCP.  Is there a way to make it remain static in the timeline and have the clips move past it?

No. Use feedback to add a feature request.

  • Very sluggish timeline response with avchd & 990x + 24G RAM+ 580gtx?

    Hi All,
Following months of research and now recently purchasing the components , I have just built the following spec machine to edit AVCHD. 990x + 24G Corsair dominator RAM + 10K velociraptor OS drive + asus rampage 3 extreme + 6 x1T 7200 rpm Seagate barracudas (that were meant to be in raid 5 but I just cant get the software RAID to operate).
I have imported about an hour of avchd footage onto the timeline and when I click in different places  on the timeline the video preview takes close to a second to update. When I scrub the timeline its just not clean and seems to be laboring.
When I did the same test with DV footage captured from my PD170 the system is perfectly responsive.
I set up the drives as C: OS + CS5
6 x 1T sata 7200rpm seagate barracudas, and I have set Video previews, Audio previews, Footage, Project file, etc each to its own clean separate drive.
This is a brand new clean system with only windows 7 and purchased version of CS5.5 installed.
    A) Please can someone help me work through this AVCHD response issue?
    B) Would it help the timeline response to get the software RAID 5 up and running on the 6 x 1T 7200 rpm drives? if so please help with guidence on this becuase whenever I have tried to set up the array in the BIOS, when I boot into windows 7 it wants to initialise the disk.
After a few hours one of the disks come up as failed. ( I have tried replacing with new drives, but the process repeats itself)
My goal is that I really need to be able to edit AVCHD footage with near instant timeline response.
    Thanks very much

  • Button action to go back to main timeline movie container

i made a movie clip "container" on my main nav which pulls
every other page into it. i have a progressive preloader on the
portfolio section and if you click to go to another page while it
is loading, it spazzes out. so for the portfolio section i took the
buttons off the main nav and put them in the portfolio section. I
can't just put a script to load the new movie because the buttons
have brackets that move and close the word of the page you are on.
I need a script that says on release to go to and play a
label on the main nav with the movie container.
to pull the movies into the main nav i made a movie clip
container and put script on the buttons to gotoandplay a movie
which loads the new swf after is plays using this action:
    _root.loader.loadMovie("port_remodel.swf");
i thought i could just use:
    on(release){
    _root.loader.gotoAndPlay("homel.swf");
in the portfolio section but it doesnt work.
please help if this makes sense!

what do you mean by, "go to and play a label on the main nav
    with the movie container"?
it us clear what it means to "go to and play a label on the
main nav", but it's not clear what a movie container has to do with
    that statement.

  • Timeline moves back or forth and gets disturbed in fcpx ....any solution....?

I am facing a weird problem ...while working you sometimes zoom into a particular portion of the timeline to work.....mostly while undoing changes the whole view of the timeline goes haywire either it comes to start or end of the entire timeline and you again have to find the place where you were working .....any gusses why it happens on pressing command z mostly........ any solution please.....
(In fcp 7 there was an option in preferences of 'available media' by clicking which you can keep that timeline have some manners and stick at one place he he....) any option in fcpx ?

Don't know whether this is a solution but it's always worth trying.
Corrupt preferences can create a vast range of different symptoms, so whenever FCP X stops working properly in any way, trashing the preferences should be the first thing you do using this free app.
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/prefman/
Shut down FCP X, open PreferenceManager and in the window that appears:-
    1. Ensure that only  FCP X  is selected.
    2. Click Trash
The job is done instantly and you can re-open FCP X.
There is absolutely no danger in trashing preferences and you can do it as often as you like.
The preferences are kept separately from FCP X and if there aren't any when FCP X opens it automatically creates new ones  .  .  .  instantly.
