Sluggish Wireless Performance...

I purchased my Macbook Pro Saturday, being a Window's convert; I am now a diehard fan of the Mac operating system. However...I do not understand how a manufacturer (Apple) can release a product with as many native-based flaws...
A) I had to deal with manually re-entering my network information after each reboot- Yay, I sucessfully figured out that problem- (thank you for all the enlightenment/information gained from reading these forums...)
B) Heat...Oh well, It's under warranty, right?
Enough with the complaining...onto the point.
C) I do not understand how/why my internet performance could be so muzzled... I get the downward end of 20 Kbps when downloading updates, or files, and the building of webpages equate to equally slow performance.
I've noticed that many other users are plagued by the same issues, and thus many have contacted technical support for help...with no results I'm gathering? Questions are:
A) Has anybody found a solution to this problem? Or is it only something that an update will remedy?
B) If the answer to "a" is no, is there any point in contacting technical support, or would it be a waste of precious calories? Efforts seem pretty much futile so far...
Thank you for any assistance! Hope you're having a wonderful night...
Macbook Pro 2.0 GHZ -2GB Ram   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I access the internet via cable. Yes, I am using airport, as for access points I'm connected through a Linksys WRT54GS router....Yes I was refering to 20 Kilabytes/second...Sorry for the lack of clarity, it was late. On my windows laptop I always was connected at 54 mbps wirelessly, and never experienced any speed issues. From reading...I've executed numerous theories that others have shared on the forum, no improvement however...

  • Disappointed with TCs wireless performance--help!

I have a 1TB Time Capsule which I believe has the same wireless part as the Airport Extreme and my wireless performance and range is surprisingly terrible. Is the Airport Extreme known to have a better wireless characteristic than the Time Capsule? Do you prefer it over the TC?
-When I use "N" only. I cannot connect just two rooms away with my MBP and my iPhone cannot use the signal...
-When I use the N (with B & G compatibility), the range is extended and I can use it in my other bedroom but videos streaming to my Apple TV (full DVD rips or EyeTV recordings) do not play reliably...
Also, I can only connect 3 ethernet devices to my TC... I would like to expand this. Should I use a different router and ethernet switch on the front line and use the TC for NAS an WAP (Wireless Access Point) only? What's your topology and what router do you recommend? I need about 5 ports.... also, if I'm using the TC or Airport as a WAP can I use the switch on that box in addition to the ones on the router?
    Thanks,
    Robert

The best wireless bandwidth performance available would be to operate the wireless in the 802.11n only (5 GHz) mode with both wide-channels enabled and with the radio channel set in the higher range (channels 149 -165 in the US).
I assume that you don't have the latest simultaneous dual-band version of the TC so in order to maintain that bandwidth, you would need a second AirPort, like an earlier 802.11g Extreme or Express to create a second wireless network for your non-"n" clients.
As you are already aware, the 5 GHz radio does not penetrate through walls as well as the lower frequency 2.4 GHz band nor has the distance.
The bottom line, for best HD (especially 1080p) streaming performance, you would need Gigabit Ethernet.

  • How to improve poor Wireless Performance?

In our Environment, there a 2504 WLC with 10 LAPs( Several 2602, several 1242), there are FLEXConnect Group with local switch and Local Authentication, but there are some clients connected to WiFi with poor wireless performance, their ping value is more 100ms, specially the audio quality is ver bad when there are Lync calls, Whehter you may give some suggestions?

  • E900 cabled vs. wireless performance

The wireless connection barely registers in the Speed Test within Cisco Connect - .56 download, 5.35 upload.
A cable connection gives 2.4 download and 5.5 upload.
The E900 is not far from the computer with no obstacles between.
Is the wireless portion of the E900 set up improperly?
Is there anything I can do to improve the wireless performance?
    Is the unit defective?
Any suggestions or clarification is much appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Will

Make sure the wireless settings are configured manually like you've created a different SSID not just the default so with the wireless security settings.

  • Differences between Macbook (v2) vs. Macbook pro (v1) wireless performance?

Recently my spouse and I were on vacation and we noticed a consistent difference in our laptops' performance with available WiFi networks.
In general, our Macbook (Core 2 Duo) could see wireless networks that the Macbook Pro (15", Core Duo) could not see.
At our hotel, the Pro would occasionally see the network but could never negotiate a connection. At the airport, both Macs could connect to the local WiFi but the Pro had 1-2 bars of strength (irrespective of Interference Robustness settings) whereas the Core 2 Macbook had 3-4 bars of strength.
What's going on here? Is it just a better card in the newer Mac?

  • WRT54G2 (v1.0) has HORRIBLE wireless performance?

My WRT54G2 has been acting like crazy. It's giving me wireless speeds of 1 Mbps or less. When wired, I get about 19 Mbps on various Internet speed tests (which is what I expect from my Internet connection). I have updated the firmware which, despite the router telling me "Upgrade are failed" (another sign of great quality), seemed to make things better for a day. Now it's back to < 1Mbps wireless. I have tried several different wireless channels, power cycling, using the reset button, etc., but it doesn't change anything. I still get the same 1Mbps wireless and full-speed wired performance.
    What is the deal here?
(Mod note: Edited for guideline compliance. Thank you.)

Try updating/reflashing your router's firmware and then reconfigure it...
Go to website linksysbycisco.com/downloads.........insert model no of your router in serach tab......select proper version of your router........download the firmware file......save that file on desktop
Follow these steps to upgrade the firmware on the device : -
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on a computer hard wired to the router...
In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1...Leave the Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
Click on the 'Administration' tab- Then click on the 'Firmware Upgrade' sub tab- Here click on 'Browse' and browse the .bin firmware file and click on "Upgrade"...
Wait for few seconds until it shows that "Upgrade is successful"  After the firmware upgrade, click on "Reboot" and you will be returned back to the same page OR it will say "Page cannot be displayed".
    Now reset your router :
Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...

I don't see anything obvious that would be causing your Mac slowdowns.
You need to update all of your third party software if there are OS X Mavericks updates that can be applied. You may need to go the third party developers' websites if there are no updates through the Mac App Store.
Update all of your Web browser Internet plugins, also.
Also, if you have any third party devices, like keyboards, mice, drawing tablets, hubs, card  readers, etc, you need to update the drivers for these devices to OS X Mavericks compatible versions.
    Good Luck!

Also if I setup another router on the same frequencies I get perfect performance.
    Another 871W or something else.
If it's another router model, I think you need to look at this.  I have a strange feeling you're hitting the limit of the hardware.  Not the wireless capabilities, but the router itself.

  • Clicking/switching tabs and menus has sluggish/slow performance.

Clicking or switching through tabs has sluggish performance. Going through Menus and Options is sluggish too even with one blank tab opened. I doubt that it is my laptop because browsing through files and folders is fast and immediate. Google Chrome has a huge difference in performance.

Having the same problem. After LOTS of clicking and experimenting, here's what I think I've found:
    # The tab performance when not maximized was much better.
    # Outside of safe mode, the Add-ons tab appears to be FAR more sluggish than any other tab. No specific extension or plugin is slowing it down. It simply lags.
    # Switching between Mozilla sites seems to be slightly sluggish compared to switching between tabs for other sites
    # Disabling the "Tab Utilities" extension (ithinc) made the performance when maximized equivalent to the non-maximized performance. This leads me to believe that the difference between the two is caused by this plugin. The Add-ons Manager tab, and Mozilla sites were still relatively slower.
    # Disabling all other extensions offered no additional improvement, but, strangely, starting in safe mode did. While inside safe mode everything is super snappy.
    # I have a sizable list of extensions, including a large number of disabled extensions (most of which I can't "remove" because they are from 3.6)
The time periods on #5 are very small, on the order of perhaps 80-100 milliseconds. Just long enough that you do a double take and wonder if it was really slower, or just your imagination, but then when you compare against changing tabs in chrome, it's clear that you aren't crazy. There is no noticable difference between safe mode and Chrome, but there IS between non-safe-with-everything-disabled and Chrome.
Is it possible that this is caused by some sort of broadcast to all plugins about the tab change? If so, could this broadcast be completed asynchronously, or else AFTER the tab switch? This is really a perception issue. To feel "fast" to the user, the click should result in instant visual feedback. If my plugins want to know something about the change, I'm satisfied with letting them wait until after '''I''' find out about it.

  • My iphone5 wireless performance isnt great with my new router

Ive had zero problems before with my old one, but it was giving me NAT problems with my xbox. So I decided to switch my router and I got the new one. The cisco EA3500. It works great with my Xbox and PlayStation but it doesn't work so great with my iPhone5. Ive noticed that my videos often stop or give me errors on youtube when they didnt before or when i turn off my wireless. It doesn't matter whether I'm close or far from the router it is the same bad performance. Are there any settings I can play with??

Id also like to mention that i have rebooted everything and it has changed nothing. Im on Wireless N, 2.5 channel.

  • Extremely sluggish / dissatisfying performance

Having read some more posts on this slowdaon issue I have download Eltrecheck and enclosed results.
The test so far on my comupter for 1/2 day having  reinstalled Yosemite is that :
1 If you dont have Mac mail running on boot then it has spakling performance but this degraded over about 1 hour to the same old spinning ball etc.
2 The instant you open Mac Mail then it all starts from there.
I am using the i Mac to post this having had to reboot re speed issues and it is currently fine ...for the moment.
I would appreciate Kappy or a senior looking over the results if possible
I note there are errors on the HD . I have repaired permissions 3 times prior to OS reinstall.
    Thank you for your help
    David

LOOKS LIKE SOMETHING IS CRASHING !

  • Extremely Slow Wireless Performance on an Extended Network

    Hi
My network setup consists of a Time Capsule (early 2009) wireless network that is being extended by an AirPort Extreme (early 2007) which has an Xbox 360 connected to it via ethernet.
    1) Everything seems fine on the MacBook Pro (wireless N) when connected to the Time Capsule and I can get the full speed of my broadband connection (8Mbit). However, when the MacBook Pro connects to the AirPort Extreme, in another room, my broadband speed drops to around 2Mbit, however the transfer rate usually remains unchanged (between 78 and 130).
I know it has nothing to do with the positioning of the base stations, as when I turn off the AirPort Extreme, the MacBook Pro, in the same room, has the full internet speed.
This is really annoying as I rely on my Xbox 360 for heavy video streaming and content downloads.
    2) When the Xbox 360 is downloading something, any internet served by the AirPort Extreme becomes totally unusable and dead.
    3) Additionally, the AirPort Extreme sometimes insists on extending the 5Ghz network from the Time Capsule which only provides a rate of around 10.
    Please help me!
    Thanks

To insure that your AirPort Extreme is extending the 2.4 GHz band from your Time Capsule:
Open AirPort Utility, select the Time Capsule and click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
    Click the Wireless Options button
Assign a separate name for your 5 GHz network. (By default, AirPort Utility will automatically add "5 GHz" to your network name.)
Click Update to save your changes
Then check to make sure that your AirPort Extreme is setup to extend the 2.4 GHz band from the Time Capsule, not the "5 GHz" network.
If you perform a Factory Default Reset on the Time Capsule, it will not affect your stored backups on the Time Capsule disk.

  • Wireless performance poor

I am seeing pathetically slow performance when using wifi on my Airport Extreme. Right now, I'm downloading a movie from iTunes. It's coming in at 348 KB/sec (peak). I get a similar speed if I copy a file to the MacBook Pro (late 2008 model, 2.4GHz with 8 Gigs memory). If I copy a file in the opposite direction, to my iMac/27 from the MacBook Pro, then I get speeds of 5MB/sec or more.
I've looked around the forums and while I don't seem to be alone with this problem, there's not a loud clamor. I've just tried some advice I found in a recent thread and changed my setting to 802.11n only (5GHz) - 802.11b/g/n. That had an effect. The peak speed went up from about 250 KB/sec.
I'm using version 7.6 on a recent purchased Airport Extreme.
While I've been typing this, the peak has worked its way up to 458 KB/sec.
    I'm using Snow Leopard, 10.6.8.
I do have a rather old iMac/G4 also connecting to the Internet using this wireless network, although it is sitting there not doing very much. Perhaps I should switch it off and see if that makes a difference.
And now, the throughput has dropped through the floor. That only lasted about a minute. Now we're back to a peak around 404K.
Does anyone have any advice on how to resolve this?
    Thanks,
    Dave

I see the same problem pulling files locally over my network from the disks on the other machines. The Internet part of this is a red herring. I only used it to illustrate the problem because I happen to be downloading a movie right now. Once it finishes, I'll pull a movie from the iMac/27 and report those speeds. And from the network disk.
I'm using Optimum Online from Cablevision.

  • Good (wireless) internet, but poor local wireless performance WRVS4400N

In short: I have a good wireless connection with the internet. But when I want to connect between two computers in the network the performance is VERY slow. I connected one of the computers wired and the performance was good.
    I have Firmware Version: V1.1.08-ETSI
I've tried several options XP<->XP, XP<->HDX-1000, XP<->Vista. But always the same, when wired OK, when wireless BAD.
I'm running out of options here, please help!
    Eelco

    Hello,
after a firmware update it helps often to reset the configuration to factory defaults. Theis prodeure may help:
    Disconnect all wireless connected PC's.
Save your old configuration "RouterCfg.cfg" to a save place.
Reset the WRV to "Factory defaults".
After the router finished the reboot login with user "admin" and passwd "admin".
Now you can restore the configuration "RouterCfg.cfg" saved in the 1st step.
If that is not helpfull you should use the following test sequence:
    Disconnect all wireless connected PC's.
Enable the "Wireless isolation within SSID" feature
    Connect all wireless PC's.
Download a large file from all wirelless connected PC's simultaneously.
    Measure the download speed.
    Disconnect all wireless connected PC's.
Disable the "Wireless isolation within SSID" feature.
    Connect all wireless PC's.
Download a large file from all wirelless connected PC's simultaneously.
    Measure the download speed.
Copy a file between the wireless connected PC's.
    Measure the copy speed.
Report the reults to that forum.
    Best regards
