Sm bus controller (p965 neo)

hi..
i have a new computer with the msi p965 neo board .
i have noticed that i have a problem with something called sm bus controller , which doesnt allow me to connect several usb divices together , i mean , i tried to connect 2 joysticks but only 1 was recognized ...
i looked for drivers for that but couldnt find any .
i am using win xp pro sp2 .
any1 ??

Try un-installing the USB drives and let windows re-detect the drivers again.
You can also try updating your intel.inf driver from Intel.

  • K8N Neo Plat SM Bus Controller Problems

Hi, I just did a recent build witht the K8N Neo Plat and am having some problems.
My original build kept getting corrupt files from any self extractor that did a self verify.  I could install windows and the MSI NForce Drivers but many files got corrupted.  I finally figured out it was Bad Ram and replaced the PC 3200 I Was using with a stick of PC 2700 I had lying around.  I installed windows with no problems and all of the windows updates(which were where I was getting corrupt files).  But then when I installed the NForce3 Drivers from the MSI Cd I get blue screen of death, which I did not recieve with the bad ram.  I then revert to last known good setting and can install of of the NForce3 drivers except for SM Bus Controller. I have tried using the NForce3 Drivers from the MSI CD and a download version.  Both won't install, it still shows up with an exclamation point next to it in device manager.  I have tried choosing the driver directly, but I get an accessed denied message.   The only problem is when SM Bus won't install, I cant run my new 6800 GT at AGP 8X.  It stays stuck in PCI mode.
Also I see a lot of talk about CPU Temps reported by BIOS.  I am using the 1.1 Bios,  and it shows the CPU running at 65-70C.  Core Center shows this also.  Is this just a misreported temp?  Im using a 3400+ CLawhammer CG Revision with a Zalman 7000 ALCu with Arctic SIlver 5,  the HSF seems to be screwed down completely, but the temp reading still makes me nervous.
    Thanks for any help.

    apply minimal heat paste
clamp sink down switch machine on
the prob is not the heat the prob is the chip clocking 8ghz
the sink and fan work really well
the bios is version 1.5 public
i'm trying to back flash it but i need version 1.1 .1.2. 1.3 and the prog to fash it
and an explanation (it's my first time lol)

  • P43 Neo-F - Mystery SM Bus Controller

    Hello everyone!
Been rocking my Neo-F since Xmas and what a great board. Just one problem I was hoping you guys could help me with:
When I first installed the board I did a clean install of Win XP and updated drivers and all that, but device manager lists an "SM Bus Controller" that I cannot find drivers for either online or on the software disc bundled with the board.
Does anyone know what it is or where to find drivers for it? Alternatively, how do I disable it so my computer stops worrying about it every startup?
It's probably just me being dense and missing something, but over to you.
    Thanks massively for your help.
    Cheers.

I had the same problem with the public Windows 7 beta on my P45 Neo-3 FR board.
I solved it by installing the latest INF Update Utility (9.1.0.1012 WHQL).
They are generic (board/OS), so they will probably solve your problem as well.

  • 848P Neo (SM Bus Controller) is not there?

Can anyone help me, I am on an MSI 848P using realtek ethernet. I have tried using driver utility cd but cant find anything on SM bus controller. Tried My os xp cd and it couldnt find the drivers.
    My comp is a p4 2.6 ghz
    512 ddram
    ATI 128 9600 graph card
    On board sound and ethernet
    80 gig hd
    dvd and cd rw drives
    floppy
The power went out of my apartment Yesterday and then tried to come back on and kinda of surged. It fried my DSL modem and messed with the router. The computer then started acting funny.  Like it would start for 1 second then turn off. So i finally got it to turn back on and then bam, The ? mark came up for the SM Bus Controller which i have no clue how to do anything about it. My internet is kinda of screwy. Would that have anything to do with the SM Bus Controller or the on board ethernet???? Also is this a Mother board based Controller or is this a computer problem outside of the MB. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you

You need to install the Intel INF Drivers.

  • MSI P965 Neo PCI-e lock?

    Hi!
could any of you tell me whether or not the MSI P965 Neo-F board has an option to lock the PCI-e clock?
My plan is to tweak the FSB to 333 (which implicates a 333/266 = 25% overclock), which I've read is more then easy to obtain with a Core 2 Duo 6300. I just don't wanna ruin the rest of the system by getting a PCI-e busspeed of 125.
So I'm really curious if this board has either a build-in lock @ 100/101, or some option in the BIOS to lock the bus.
    Thanks!

well you could just try raising your fsb to 333Mhz and see what happens. done it with mine no problems at all no other tweeking either. lots n lots of people have done the same without a problem.
check out the overclocking and modding forum here, n see for yourself.

  • SATA and PATA port Selection on P965 Neo - Advice please!

    Hello,
I am just waiting for my parts to arrive, including the P965 Neo. I was wondering about the JMicron controller and the ICH8 Intel SATA ports and how to best use them.
My setup will be one SATA 320gb HD and one PATA DVD writer.
My question is where best to connect these? I don't want or need NCQ or RAID, so can I connect the HD to one of the serial port of the ICH8 and just have the DVD drive connected to the JMicron?
Do I need to install the JMicron driver at all?
    Thanks for any advice.

    Thanks for the reply.
If I want to use only the IDE channel for my DVD drive (HDD will be on ICH8 SATA port), can I install the JMicron driver after I have installed Windows XP?
I don't have a floppy for this build, so I want to avoid having to 'F6' at install time.
    Thanks once again.

  • MOVED: p965 Neo 2 board can't recognise samsung writemaster DVD writer

    Just bought a P965 Neo 2 motherboard.
Connected harddisk to SATA cable and EIDE cable to samsung writemaster DVD writer.  Not sure why BIOS can't detect the writemaster drive but can detect harddisk?
    Quote from: Misha
Just bought the board. Installed it. will not boot from win xp or any other bootable cd rom. help
The Intel 965 (and 975) chipset does NOT support IDE/PATA.
For this reason, each mainboards manufacturer is using a 3rd party IDE controller.
In this case (P965 Neo2) MSI is using Marvell 88SE6111.
Any PATA device is not recognized in the first boot phase. You have to wait for the 2nd one (post-boot) in order to see it.
Check out your bootable devices (and their order) in BIOS: the CDROM option means SATA optical device, not PATA CDROM.
To select the PATA optical drive, search for something like ... DVD-RAM in those options.

  • MSI p965 NEO-F SpeedFan setup guide !!!

IF you have MSI p965 Platinum board, speedfan 4.32 Beta 8 does not support it, please wait for release of speedFan beta 12, which should support platinum board. (thx: Olabe)
25.1.2007: Added screen shots from my settings. (10th post on the thread).
Okay. Seems many people have problems setting up speedFan with p965 neo. I agree the setup is bit cryptic, but I got it working with the help & HOWTO guide included with speedfan. If this didn't help you, try to follow these instructions.
    My setup. (tested to work with bios 1.6B9 , 1.6B13 (D) 1.6B15 (F) ) With P965 NEO-f
I am using SpeedFan 4.32 Beta 8. (to download beta, you need to register to speedfan site b4 you can download it, so of you go to http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php )
Oh btw if you want pictures, I'm feeling lazy, refer to speedFan manual it has nice pictures and quite good howto too.
When you start speedfan you will see some temperatures and maybe one fanspeed that will probably say 0 RPM. Don't care about the speed reading yet.
What we are interested are core1 and core2 temp.
Press configure button and go to temperatures tab.
    ** TEMPERATURES
There are temperatures core1 and core2. Open first core1.
There you should see like speed1, speed2, speed3. For my rig, speed2 was actually CPUfan, so with 965neo it should be that, for platinum ppl you just have to figure it out by testing.
Open CORE1 and untag all other speeds except speed2. This means that CORE1 temperature is related to SPEED2 of some fan (cpufan).
Now Do the same to CORE2, as it is cooled by same fan.
Now before you exit temperatures, choose core2, set desired and warning temp. SpeedFan tries to keep "desired temp". Mine is 53C, meaning if core1 or core2 goes above, fanspeed is increased, if both are below, fan will be slowed.
!!! REMEMBER to set the FAN to cool both cores, so that if 1 threaded program is causing lot of CPU load your cooler reacts to it !!!
    ** FANS
Go to FANs tab. Unselect all but SPEED2 (you can also rename it). This means only speed is shown for this fan. (I only use 1 fan that gives readings).
    ** SPEEDS
Go to SPEEDS tab. And select SPEED2. Here you can set maximum and minimum power of your fans. Mine are 0% and 100%. With my mobo and intel stock cooler 0% is about 1050RPM. Tho you should check that the fan does not stop with this setting but not yet.
    ** ADVANCED
Go to Advanced tab. From selection menu select "WINBOND blahblah".
Now you must edit 2 settings.
FAN2 divisor, set this to 8. (now you should be able to see fanspeed, but dont exit the menu yet).
PWM2 mode is something like "thermal cruise" meaning its mobo controlled, change setting to "manual PWM control" and check box "remember it" from very down of the settings window.
    Now press OK.
Now from speedFan main menu, you select (below settings button) automatic fanspeed.
So now speedFan should be controlling your fanSpeed and you should see also your fan rpm (thx to blueKnight giving hint about the fan divider).
If you cant see your fanSpeed I dunno, but even if you dont see it, if you have done the setup on correct fan, speedFan should now control the cpu fan power % depending on Core temps.
Now get pifast/superpi/prime95/stresstest (i prefer stresstest).
First run something only on one core, see if speedfan reacts it, or if you even hit your "desired temperature". Fanspeed should start going up.
If this does not work, try changing on other core, or run 2 threaded test. (or for pifast, make a bat file that runs it continously) and run 2 pifast. Preferably before this open to CMD's and setup from task managers processor affinities so that cmd1 runs on core0, cmd2 runs on core1.
    **** pifast_continous.bat ****
    :alku
    call pifast.bat
    goto alku
    /*** pifast_continous.bat ***\
You need to use "call" command so that it runs continously after quitting pifast.
Pifast.bat is a batch execution file that runs the pifast with pre defined settings so that it wont ask any questions after startup.
    **** pifast.bat ****
    pifast33.exe < pi_inp.txt

If you want to be bit more hifi about your cpu.
Google for rightmark cpu clock utility and install it. Using performance on demand settings you can setup your CPU to change speeds and voltages depending on cpu utilization (i know the cpu does this automatically).
But also you can use thermal throttling also as "idle throttling". So I enabled throttling at idle, Im using throttle levels 12.5%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%. This number means that how many of CPU cycles are used for computation and how much is used for idling with trhottle. So PLS remember to choose 100% if you want to use all the CPU power u got.
I wont make guide about rightmark CPU clock utility, it has fine manual itself. And easy GUI. Some of the terms that there is (and TM1 and TM2 sensor or something I had to refer to manual).
To note, my computer works perfectly with CPU clock utility. But my bit older laptop with Pentium M and some Centrino sertified board does not.
Clock utility can set my cpu speed & throttle with my laptop, but it is conflicting with keyboard irq or something, because some times my keyb lose a key hit or two.
Hope this helps you speedFan fans. I'm going back to water cooling when I get my SCSI drives silenced.
    - prc

Now with some pictures from my settings.
First before you setup, you can go to speeds tab to rename speed2 to eg. CPUFAN, tho this does not have any other effect than its easier to see from other speeds.
In temeperature tabs, I have chosen core1 and core2 temperatures to be those temperatures that speed2 can affect. As you can see, also core1 (and core2) have "desired" and "warning" temperatures set.
      http://koti.mbnet.fi/~prc/temp/Speedfan_temp.JPG
In Fans tab, I have unmarked all other fans than CPUFAN (before renaming speed2). I dont want to monitor other fans, also cpufan is onlyone that I can get RPM values.
      http://koti.mbnet.fi/~prc/temp/speedfan_fans.JPG
From speeds tab I have set that CPUFAN minimum speed is 25% and maximum is 100%. Before I had 0-100%, but I changed min value to 25% to give chipset a bit more airflow, as it is with passive cooling.
      http://koti.mbnet.fi/~prc/temp/speedfan_speeds.JPG
In advanced tab I have changed speed2 divisor to 8, and PWM2 mode to manual PWM control. This was originally something like thermal cruise or so, meaning it is BIOS controlled.
      http://koti.mbnet.fi/~prc/temp/speedfan_advanced.JPG
Here is picture of speedfan running so that there is not much CPU load. (ok the meter says over 40%, must be some of my over 20 applications running atm, but generally load stays under 10%).
      http://koti.mbnet.fi/~prc/temp/speedfan_noload.JPG
And here is picture of speedFan under load, running pifast on both cores.
      http://koti.mbnet.fi/~prc/temp/speedfan_load.JPG
And here is one picture to show, that the cpu fan really reacts also to manual controls.
      http://koti.mbnet.fi/~prc/temp/speedfan_manual.JPG
To note that if I enter speed 0% for my cpufan, it will still run about 1000 RPM, so motherboard won't stop it really. Of course fan minimum and maximum RPM depends on the fan. Some fans run over 5000 RPM (FYI).
My speedfan is version 4.32 beta 8. From BIOS I have enabled that smartfan or whatever setting, with target temperature around 50C. But speedfan will overrule this setting when it is set to "manual PWM control". I have left it enabled, so that my BIOS can control the fanspeed (and not run on 100% all the time) if for some reason I don't startup speedfan or it gets broken.
GL with setupping, hope you got it working, if not try to be bit more specific and lets see if theres something we can do for it.
Ah to note, to control fan you must use fan that uses the 4pin CPUfan connector, I'm not sure if the fan needs to have some chip on itself to be actually controlled. In amd boards, where fan connector is 3pin connector, you can control all fans. (if the cpufan is controllable). Dunno about Intel boards, this is first intel board for me, after my old P3.

  • Would the P965 Neo-F make a good board in a student PC?

These are the components I had in mind for my sister's new PC:
    Core 2 Duo E6300
    MSI P965 Neo-F
    2x1GB Kingston HyperX KHX6000D2K2 DDR2-750
    Asus 7600GS passively cooled
    430W Seasonic S12-430
    Samsung 80GB HDD SATA
    Samsung DVD Burner SATA
    BenQ FP93VW
    MS-Tech Midi Tower
She does game a little (Caesar 4 too, so the gfx must have a little juice), but mostly DVD watching, surfing the net, work stuff, encoding to MP3 and so on. Would the Neo-F be worth the extra money compared to the 50€ AsRock solutions?
Edit: Important question: Does the Neo have any other significant problems then with IDE optical drives? Since both the HDD and DVD Burner are SATA I dont expect any problems on this side.

Quote from: Streifenkarl on 28-December-06, 14:47:38
Thanks for your input guys. I think I'll stay with the Neo then!  Which BIOS version should I use then? 1.5 or an earlier one for highest stability?
Use 1.5 if it works right. Seems BIOS has some issues as beta's are released quite often. That Asrock board wouln't be bad, if you get piece that isn't defect. My Asrock's AGP port was faulty which resulted burned GFX. If you are not using external (PCI/PCIe) hdd controllers you should not hit any problems with this board. I would not suggest flashing beta biosses if you dont have problems.
Jmicron controller might cause some problems, but they are fixable trought newest drivers I have heard. I am currently running some old beta driver with my 965 neo, as I have been too lazy to update to newest as they seem to work enought. I dont use much IDE drives anyway, only my raid1 backup set is IDE, other stuff is SCSI, which are bit problematic with this board.
2x 12v lines aren't good If you are using some heavy gfx card, if the rails aren't real powerfull. There was some nice postings on these forums about them. I would prefer PSU with really heavyduty one 12v rail. But if it works, dont do anything ofc.
Your set is almost like mine, tho I have e6400 and kingston valueram. Im not sure if the mobo keeps RAM at specified speed as I havent found any software that could see the ram clock. Well I can run 325 fsb stable with default voltage, so if the ram clock is not fixed to 333 my KVRs are just good pieces
Nice to see atlast powerfull cpu that can be cooled even with stock cooler when overclocked, tho I already installed my watercooling as all parts of my computer seems to work.

  • Few issues about MSI P965 Neo F

I have recently put together my C2D system. Details are in my sig. I have a few queries related to the mobo. BIOS is already flashed to v1.5.
    1. Are P965 and P965 Neo F 2 different boards? Because their pics, specs etc are the same.
    2. My 2 optical drives are connected as master/slave to the IDE port while my HDD is SATA. I cant figure out which mode the optical drives are running in. Current transfer mode shows 'Not Applicable' in Device Manager in Windows Control Panel. During boot, both drives show up in DOS screen. How do I get them both to run in UDMA mode?
    3. My DVD writer is running slowly while the combo drive runs well.
    4. When I install SMART monitoring utilities, they are unable to retrieve any info from my HDD. Why is this so? SMART is enabled in BIOS. I want to monitor my HDD's temp. through Windows.
    5. I have installed CoreCentre. Whenever I run it a warning sounds and CPU Fan speed flashes. Speed is shown around 830-840 rpm. Is this enough? If not how do I increase it? My system is running at default speeds. I havent overclocked at all. Fan monitoring is enabled in BIOS.
    6. When RAM timings are set to auto in BIOS, Cpu-Z shows 5-5-5-13 latency. But when I manually set the timings to 4-4-4-12 through BIOS, Cpu-Z shows 4-4-4-20 latency! What is going on?
    Kindly advise. Thanks!

But that is exactly the problem. I am unable to set the UDMA mode. All IDE channels in BIOS try to detect the hard disks, when actually no hard disk is connected to IDE. HDD is SATA. Optical drives are connected to the solitary IDE port. I have kept all PIO mode and DMA mode settings to AUTO.
Windows is showing my optical drives to be SCSI devices.
Even Sisoft Sandra is showing my optical drives in SCSI devices tab. Following are the details for my dvd writer :

  • P965 Neo-F & Boot problem

    Hell all
I fitted a new MSI P965 Neo-F which is labled on box but not with the F on the motherboard itself.  It also has on the motherboard 7235 v1.1
    Ok Intel D 920 3.2GHz 800MHz FSB
2GB Crucial DDRII 800Hz Kit not balisix
    x1 WD Sata HDD
x2 Lite-on DVD Wtrs same model.
    BIOS v1.5
    Bios version is W7235IMS Broadwater
The thing I am trying to avoid is on pre-post boot (if this is the correct word to use) it does a memory count which delays the boot of the machine considerably and is so annoying.
I have in the BIOS the option for fast boot Enabled and it still does a memory count.  Is their any way to stop the memory count.
Other thing I have noticed in BIOS where Drives are listed under the main section, the Drives attached to machine are not listed.
also after getting past the memory count the next screen pauses with the WD HDD and underneath the x2 optical drives again slowing boot down.
Is this becuase of my DDRII 800MHz and BIOS being v1.5 ?
Thanks in advance for any help please.

That doesn't matter.  Don't worry about the -F.  It is still the same (the right) board.

MS-7235 is the model number and v1.1 is the PCB Version.  The Info means that you have a P965 Neo(-F).

Clear CMOS with man A/C power cable removed from PSU and load "Optimized Defaults" in BIOS.  See what happens after that.

Only drives hooked up to the ports hosted by the primary Intel ICH8 Controller are listed in BIOS.  Drives connected to the ports of the secondary JMicron Chipset (IDE Port and one SATA port (the one that has a different color), do not appear in BIOS because the JMicron Chip has its own firmware.

That is the BIOS/Firmware of the JMicron Chipset checking and listing the drives that are connected to its ports.  Nothing to worry about.

  • MSI P965 Neo-F Sata & IDE presentation (& boot options)

    hi,
    I have purchased a MSI P965 Neo F motherboard.
    http://www.msicomputer.co.uk/Product...3735&cat_id=77
I have flashed the bios to the lastest 1.18 revision.
If you look at this board, you'll find it has 5 SATA ports.
    - 1 SATAII port by JMicron JMB361.
    - 4 SATAII ports by ICH8.
    Questions:
1.) The machine only appears to be able to boot from the 1 jmicron sata port.
2.) within the bios any disks plugged into the board on the other 4 ports show up as "ide" disks, this could be wording or this could be some cheap bus trick

    Hi, thanks for responding,
    Quote
no wrong with "ide", as SATA ports on ICH8 are detected as IDE devices, (as opposed to detected as SCSI device).
could you clarify this, I think its just the "no wrong" line, what do you mean by this.
    Quote
No, the machine is able to boot from any JMicron port, including PATA port.
there is only 1 jmicron sata port, so my initial comment was aimed at you can only boot from this 1 sata port - not the other 4 ich8 ports, I assume thats correct from your comment.

  • P965 neo-f hdd detection problem

Hello, I'm facing a very strange problem. I'm using a p965 neo-f board, with a dual pentium 2.80GHz, a 250gb sata wd disk, 2x512mb corsair ram, ati radeon x1300, psu tagan 480w, ide dvdrw bios w7235ims v1.5. I build the system myself and installed windows xp x64 pro. Everything went ok and the system was stable. Some day there was a current breakdown and when i powered on the pc during the post it hanged at ide detecting disks. I've entered bios setup, save and exit rebooted and went back to windows. At the past 2 years i suffered a couple current breakdowns leading to the above problem that i'm solving it as i said before. I must say that the computer belongs to my sister and i'm her technician . During last week my sister decided to move the pc to another room. They connected the computer, powered it on and the same thing. During post it hangs on detecting disks. I took the computer at home changed the sata to the jmicron slot, and booted to windows. The problem is that the ethernet controller doesn't work. So i reinstalled all the mobo drivers, no luck. I did a bios update to version 1.90. The result was with sata connected to the jmicron, the ethernet controller is not working. I changed the sata to sata 6 and everything worked ok. Today I've opened the pc again to check it out and the same thing, post hangs at ide detection. I don't know what to do anymore. maybe the intel controller is messing up with the jmicron? or the bios is not suitable? should i downgrade to other bios versions? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

Thanks for the reply, I thought about those things myself and I'll try them. Here is another weird one. Connecting the hard drive to sata2 slot everything worked well for a day.
Today I powered the pc in the morning and it recognized the disk. I Did some work and I checked the shutdown and the rebooting. Everything looked as It should be. So  I went to the beach, and when I came back, I started the pc--->> the same thing happened!!!
Should I try another bios version? or It is just a waste of time?

  • P965 Neo: Boot from USB-Stick problem

    Hi!
I have a problem with booting from a USB-Stick (FAT) with the P965 Neo board, Bios Version 1.5.
The USB-Stick will not be detected properly as a boot device (HDD) in the bios setup. It appeared only
once at the 'Hard Disk Boot Priority' list and sporadically at the 'CD-ROM Boot Priority' list (which is not always there).
Can anyone please point me to the correct bios setting to boot properly from the USB Stick?
(Booting from the USB Stick works fine on a ASUS board, so the USB Stick itself is bootable).
    Here is my attached hardware:
    SATA Harddrive
    IDE DVD Burner
(both connected to the JMicron SATA/IDE controller)
    thanks,
    -phazer-

I use software called "Flashboot" to format my USB Stick, this software has options to format USB stick as USB-FDD, USB-ZIP or USB-HDD. You can use built in Free-DOS as your USB Stick OS. I have formated it as USB-ZIP and set my BIOS to boot with USB-ZIP and i didn't have any problems. Try this software it's very simple to use and user friendly. Only problem is that is not freeware so if you use trial version you can boot only once and after that you must format it again.
