Small application development

Hi all,
Apologies if this kind of thing has been posted before. I was just wondering if anyone had any tips on how to achieve the following:
I would like to run a small platform independant application on the client side (in Swing maybe?) to accept a password. Once the correct password has been entered (don't worry about this at the mo), I need it to connect to a server side component (JSP / Servlet?) to authenticate the user. I am working on a new identification protocol unsing ZeroKnowledge thechniques.
So I need a small app to connect to a server side component, they will then send a few BigIntegers back and forth and if the right answer is recieved then the user is then allowed into a restricted area (such as email inbox, e-banking screen etc). Could anyone let me know if this is possible, I am a fairly competent Java programmer with bog standard J2SE but a bit weak on the web / networking technologies.

here's a simple client you can build off of:
import java.io.*;
import java.net.*;
public class Password {
     protected static final String SERVER_ADDRESS = "http://woogley.net/misc/Password/check.php";
     public Password() throws IOException {
          BufferedReader b = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(System.in));
          boolean valid = false;
          while (!valid) {
               System.out.print("Enter the password: ");
               try {
                    valid = checkPass(b.readLine());
               catch (MalformedURLException e) {
                    valid = false;
          System.out.println("Password accepted.");
     protected boolean checkPass(String pass) throws MalformedURLException, IOException {
          URL u = new URL(SERVER_ADDRESS+"?pass="+pass);
          BufferedReader b = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(u.openStream()));
          // the server code only returns one line, and
          // it'll either be "true" or "false"
          String s = b.readLine();
          if (s.equalsIgnoreCase("true")) {
               return true;
          return false;
     public static void main(String args[]) {
          try {
               new Password();
          catch (IOException e) {
               e.printStackTrace();
}the server-side code can be in any language you want, because to the application it's all HTTP in the end anyway. In this example I'll use PHP.. but you can use JSP if you want. Of course, this example isn't connecting to a password DB or decrypting or anything ;). The application just sends a GET variable (which is the password from the user) to the server script and the script will process with a few simple if statements:
<?php
$password = "dukeownsjames";
if (isset($_GET["pass"])) {
     // case-sensitive check
     if (strcmp($_GET["pass"],$password) == 0) {
          print "true";
     else {
          print "false";
else {
     print "false";
?>

  • Mobile Media Application Development

    I have been given 24 hours to conduct some preliminary research on the potential of a company wide mobile wide application development project.
    We are looking to synchronise pictures taken on our agents phones with the head office server.
    We use a variety of different phones and manufacturers.
    Ideally we need one application that we can install which will transfer all images on the phone over WAP to a service we will write.
    Can anyone tell me if it is possible to write an application which will sit on any phone and if it is feasible for it to access the file system of the mobile to grab the images?
    Any help on this would be appreciated.

    Hi h3gg3m,
    It's certainly possible to take photo's from within an application and have them sent to a server. An example of an application that takes the photographs can be found here http://developers.sun.com/techtopics/mobility/midp/articles/picture/index.html and there are numerous other examples of apps that will send data via http to a webserver (I just found this on a quick search http://www.kablog.org/).
    As for taking the photos outside of the application (i.e. using the phone's native camera app) and having the application then upload them, this will be device specific as it requires an optional package (JSR75 - PIM and FileConnection) to be present and you've also then got the problem of navigating to wherever the device stores it's photos (if they're available to the app) etc. I'm afraid that I've never used that particular API so I'm not speaking from experience.
    In short, the option that would be compatible with the most devices, if it suits your requirements, is to go for an all in one application that takes the photo, stores it, and uploads it via. an http POST to a standard web form. The only potential problem with this solution is that without the optional JSR75 package (access to the native file system), all photos would be stored in Java's record store (RMS) which could be fairly small on some devices (I think the spec says 8k minimum).
    Hope this helps,

  • What's the difference between the Application Developer Tools and Server Applications CD

    I have 2 questions about Sql Server 2005.
    1.  I have 2 sets of CDs, one is called Sql Server 2005 Developer Edition, Applications Developer Tools, and another one called Sql Server 2005 Developer Edition Servers Server Applications.
    I installed the Applications Developer Tools on my development pc, and I was able to use create and populate a database, and use Sql Server Management Studio fine. I wonders what 's the Servers Server Applications set of cds for.
    2.  I just like to install Sql Server 2005 on a test pc also.  Can I use my Developer Edition Applications Developer Tools to install it ?
    Thanks.

  • Re-deploying application developed by PDK

    Hi,
    Our portal users are using the applicatoin developed by PDK.
    However, we are planning to re-deploy the application developed by PDK.
    Here is my questions.
    1. Is it possible for portal users to use the current PDK developed applicatoin during re-deploying process?
    For example, if the re-deployment takes 10 mins, can the portal user not use the application in that period?
    anybody has same experience before?

    Hello John,
    it depends on the structure and content of your PDK project. If you are using RFServiceWrapper to register your class in CrtClassLoaderRegistry, then you also need to restart J2EE, in order to update previosly deployed class.  In this case, your changes will take effect only after restart (users must stop using the app).
    In general, re-deployment consists of two steps:
    1 undeploy previous version.
    2 deploy the new one.
    It means that there is always an time period (relatively small) when your app is not available. If any of users try to access (send a request to) your app. , then he gets an error message (Could not found....).
    But there are several options, how to forbid using the app durign the deploy (hide the access point - role; deploy app. with other name, create another iView and then just redirect your users, and so on...). Of course, only if it's not conflicting with your business processes.

  • JSP application developed for PC does not work on IPAQ

    Hi all,
    I have developed a database/web application using JSP, Apache Tomcat, MS Access. It works great on Windows PC. Now I want to make sure that it works on PDAs also.
    I tried using an IPAQ which runs Win CE 3.0 but I get some errors while interacting with the database.
    One of the webpages in the application has a form through which the user can submit a text message and upload a file. Following are the problems that I am facing:
    1. The 'UPLOAD' button through which the user can browse his local hard drive and select a file is invisible if I am browsing with an IPAQ. I am using multipart formdata (MultipartRequest.java provided by Oreilly) for submitting a message and uploading the file. What could be the problem?
    2. If I forget about the attachment file and just try to submit a text message (which works on PCs) , I get the error message: "IOEXception: submitted data is not multipart formdata".
    I am very new to PDA application development, and any inputs will be very valuable.
    Thanks in advance.
    m_asu.

    I was wondering if anybody can give me some pointers as to how can I make an application developed for PCs work on IPaqs.
    Thanks

    You might want to look at my blog post at http://tinyurl.com/codesign .
    Apart from that it might help if you could elaborate a bit more about the specific error you're experiencing. In my experience EVERY codesign problem is an issue of mis-configuration / restarting Xcode and can ultimately be resolved.

  • Need help with a small application

    Hi all, I please need help with a small application that I need to do for a homework assignment.
    Here is what I need to do:
    "Write an application that creates a frame with one button.
    Every time the button is clicked, the button must be changed
    to a random color."
    I already coded a part of the application, but I don't know what to do further.
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.awt.event.*;
    import javax.swing.*;
    public class ColourButton extends JFrame {
         JButton button = new JButton("Change Colour");
         public ColourButton() {
              super ("Colour Button");
              setSize(250, 150);
              setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
              JPanel panel = new JPanel();
              panel.add(button);
              add(panel);
              setVisible(true);
         public static void main(String[] args) {
              ColourButton cb = new ColourButton();
    }The thing is I'm not sure what Event Listener I have to implement and use as well as how to get the button to change to a random color everytime the button is clicked.
    Can anyone please help me with this.
    Thanks.

    The listener:
    Read this: [http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/uiswing/components/button.html]
    The random color:
    [Google this|http://www.google.com/search?q=color+random+java]
