Small Biz DR plan

Hi guys, I need to implement a Disaster Recovery (avoidance) plan for my small business. We did some research and I think found an awesome solution for under $1000 (Aussie dollars) but would value your feedback.
In the office, we have 1x PB (1.5GHz PPC G4) & 1x eMac (1.25GHz PPC G4) and at Home 1x eMac (1.25GHz PPC G4) all running OS 10.3.9 When new OS is released will upgrade and add on new MacBook Pro to replace PB as main source.
We don't really have a file server as most of our business is browser based and original files are accessed from & kept on the PB. Both office and home use NetComm NB9W for ADSL 2+ wireless network and VoIP.
If you need any more detailed info please let me know.
We were thinking of using:
SuperDuper for software $30
http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html
2x LaCie Ethernet Disk mini 500gb (1 at office, 1 at home) thought about 1tb but we don't need it and for the money we could just add another 500gb as a mirror.
http://www.lacie.com/au/products/product.htm?pid=10844
I’ve just realised that these networked drives don’t have Firewire, so we won’t be able to boot from them.. bummer. So for added back up will add on 1x LaCie FW external in office.
1x Sandisk 4gb flash drive, which has archived business fold. Done manually at present.
Online storage - there are a lot now and we are narrowing down the choices. Some are as cheap as $5/m for 5gb
So far, it looks like a simple plan and there is a lot of positive talk about LaCie and SD on the forums. Ultimately I would love this system to be as automated as possible and would like to have everything in place and running smoothly within 10 days.
Cheers

Hi Little B
What are Aussie dollars, I thought our country uses Australian dollars?
I use SuperDuper and a LaCie external disk and both products work well.
In a recovery you can boot from an external clone, as all of your computers have Firewire. I haven't heard of booting over a networked drive. I think you should forget that idea.
With what you propose you could be up and running well within 10 days and well under $1000 at that. So it sounds good.
As far as automation goes, the best I can suggest is to run an Applecript to remind you to use Superduper to do a backup, as i don't believe it has built in scheduling and that is too much to expect from something that only costs $30.

If you're referring to 11.1.2.1 (emphasis on the .1) SBS 2011 integrates Windows 2008 R2 64bit Standard which is a supported platform for Hyperion so it should not have any issues and be fully supported: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/server-cloud/Windows-Small-Business-Server/editions.aspx
HFM 11.1.2 only supports Windows 2008 (not R2)

  • Pci compliance for very small biz using mac and ipad

I run a very SMALL business. We have one MacBook an iPad and an iPhone. We run everything through a second party merchant card processor/software (mindbody). However, according to the PCI compliance survey I just finished, I am supposed to run quarterly internal scans for vulnerabilities. Does antivirus software do this?
Also, what firewall settings do I need on my mac to be PCI compliant?
I know this may be a very simple question, but the PCI survey assumes everyone has an IT department with a ton of policies and procedures. Trying to figure out how to be compliant as a super small business without all that infrastructure.

Anti-virus software would not do PCI vulnerability scanning. You need specialized software to do that. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend specific software. My wife's small business was wrestling with PCI issues some time ago, and they're currently not doing any kind of internal scans. I don't know why not. They do get scanned externally periodically, to look for vulnerabilities in their setup that could allow people outside their network to gain access.
PCI compliance is a scam anyway. It doesn't prevent the numerous breaches that so many high-profile companies have been facing lately, and you can bet they're dotting their i's and crossing their t's with respect to PCI compliance. They have the budget to do so.
Your Mac should not need the firewall on. That shouldn't affect PCI compliance, if the Mac is properly configured and does not have any services open in System Preferences -> Sharing.

  • Future Versions of Linux Small Biz Suite?

Novell's Small Business Development Team focuses on delivering real value
for small- to medium-sized businesses. Their strategy is to take Novell's
enterprise-level solutions (such as SLES and OES) and simplify, streamline,
and improve the software so the technology can be used in a SMB environment.
For example, in NLSBS 9, Novell's Small Business Development Team took the
SLES 9 software and made it easier and quicker to install and setup
    GroupWise, eDirectory, and iManager.
For future Linux versions of the Small Business Suite, what simplifications,
improvements, and additional features would you like to see?

Hmm, interesting question, but sort of out of the scope here in a tech
    support newsgroup.
You might consider reposting this over in:
    novell.community.industry-specific.small-business
as that newsgroup is a good fit for this sort of query.
Then again, notwithstanding your hotmail address, you might be a Novell
    person....

  • Small biz start up

We are a small office 1-5 and are thinking of dropping our landline for Skype. The website is confusing however and not sure where to begin or what we need to make this happen. So what are the costs? Are they the same as a regular user. We make fewer than twenty calls a week. Can our staff have access to the service out of the office or is it only on one computer?

Avoid it at all cost! I regret having integrated Skype into my business. Stick to the landline, it won't be as flexible but it will be reliable.

  • Can't "hairpin" with RV180 Small Biz Router - how to achieve?

We have 2 servers in our LAN set up via One-to-One NAT to accept WAN calls to 2 static IP addresses.  This works fine.
What we cannot do is: access various calendar and web forms on these 2 servers from within our LAN (thought they work fine outside the LAN).  Attempts to call these pages/services from within the LAN directs users to the router's admin login page.
My understanding is that this model does not support "hairpinning" (essentially leaving the LAN and coming back in via the WAN).
What is the best way to achieve seamless access regardless of whether the user is within the LAN or outside of it?

    Hi Nathan,
firmware 1.0.2.6 fixed the issue reported by L2.
    (reported from case 624799947)
    latest is 1.0.3.10

  • Small biz network squirrely after installing wrt54gl

Put the WRT54GL into the mix on our peer-to-peer network this morning. Everything worked fine for a while, but now the computers can't talk to each other. I disabled DHCP management on the router because I suspected a conflict with with our server (running Win 2003 Server Standard Ed.) and set the router's ip address to static. Restarted computers, reset the router, but the computers still can't see each other.
All the computers are able to get on the internet just fine.
BTW, we're not using any wireless features.
    Thanks for any help.

Success! I pinged all the machines, and the ones that wouldn't return the pings had software firewalls - two of them running Zone Alarm and one running Windows firewall. After shutting off the ZA/Win firewalls, network connectivity was restored. Although I have to admit, I don't understand why. The software firewalls on the machines were all configured to accept connections from the other machines on our LAN - why did they go squirrelly after putting the router on the LAN? You would think (or at least I would think. . .) that if the machines running the software firewalls were going to suddenly have an issue, it would be with the router, not with each other. But the opposite was the case - every machine was able to access the internet through the router, but couldn't access files on local machines over the LAN.
Ah! I hunted a little more and answered my question. Before putting the router on the LAN, our internal network was using the 192.168.0.x ip range. After installing the router, it changed to 192.168.1.x
Here again, though, I have another question - why? I didn't run the Linksys setup cd that came with the router on every machine, only 3 out of 8. Did Windows somehow adjust dynamically? It would seem so, but you experts out there tell me. Anyway, I changed the trusted/LAN zone in Zone Alarm from 192.168.0.x to 192.168.1.x, and now things seem okey dokey, even with ZA running.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Lion Question about User agreement small biz

Lion will be available via App Store only.
The App Store does not allow Business use of downloaded OSs.
Business can pay for 20 licences for just under $600 and get full Business use.
How does a business with less than 20 licences get licenced for full business use? Consumer licence from App Store, or business licence for 20 seats?

You're going to have to ask Apple. I would interpret the statement that Lion will be available for $29 from the MAS…
And, for businesses with many Macs … as saying if you don't consider yourself a business with many Macs, just buy enough copies as you need.
But I'm not a lawyer and I haven't stayed in a Holiday Inn in like forever.

    Hi All,

WebEx MeetingCenter is a SaaS offering with no on-premise product key that you install. If this is what you have you should be working with your assigned WebEx CSM. If you don't know who this is try reaching out to normal WebEx support.
If you have an on-premise product, such as WebEx Meetings Server, then we need clarification what you actually have. Where did this license come from? A PUT order? Additional users? What process did you use to activate it?

  • Affect of a new planning level selection

    Hi,
we have a BW-BPS environment with lots of BPS functionalities, palnning sequenses, save, copy functions...
Until now we have all products from SAP R/3 extracted.
Newly there are now in SAP R/3 lots of small products. Planning people donu2019t want to see and plan all products in planning layouts. They want to see to plan only the "important products".
    The following solution is thought.
we will create a product hierachie with 2 hierarchie node: "important products" and "small products".
the hier. node u201Cimportant productsu201D should be used in all planning levels in selections.
How can it (selection in planning level) affect the current planning functions ?
    What would you suggest here?

    Hi,
Planning functions are assigned to just one planning level. So if you have planned to restrict the values using Hierarchy at planning level, then the underlying functions will apply only to that hierarchy members.
