Small Network Setup Ideas

Looking for some recommendations for those that are more familiar with Linksys products and configuration interface. I would like to setup a small network (3 PC's) and also provide general use wifi utilizing the my businesses DSL connection. Concern - Does Linksys setup allow for me to segment my small network (i.e. 3 pc's) from the general use wifi network. For simplicity purposes I thought I would assign static IP address to my network segment (10.1.x.x range) and want to utilize DHCP for wireless network (different network segment). Also sense this is a shared service, I would like to prioritize my business traffic over the general access. Is this easily accomplished? Regarding the wireless, I only want to provide it to my clients. I suspect I can not broadcast the SSID, but how best to handle this via the Linksys setup? I have been looking at the Linksys Ultra RangePlus Wireless-N Broadband Router Model #: LKS WRT160N. My building has very think concrete walls and I would also like to provide access to an outside patio so I expect that I will likely have to deploy multiple wireless devices to maintain a strong signal. So for those Linksys experts, your advise greatly welcomed. Thanks in advance. TS

you can use WAP4400N for getting good signals from wireless router .... Also you can go for WPC600N (Dual Band Adapter) for good connectivity ....

  • New office network setup idea, can anyone help!

    Hi all
    I wish to do the following and would help and advice from this group to guide our purchases and development of the following;
I wish to set up a company dedicated LAN [with wifi access]. We also need to access the system via ftp and some way remotely connect from several laptops on the road to a main server securely. BUT we will also need to access a few PC programs either jointly on a Mac server AND a PC linked up or just with a Mac. We already have a real mix of systems needing to access the proposed setup. Mac Mini's. ibooks, Ti's Intel Apple's G5's and so on.
Can you guys suggest a low learning curve, reliable setup?

You'll probably want to take up this question in the Mac OS X Networking forum. This forum is for questions about Apple Remote Desktop, Apple's application for managing networked Macs and so probably not the forum where you'll be most likely to get help and advice for your situation.
    Regards.

  • Small Network Trouble

I am currently trying to setup a small network at my Mothers work and I have ran into a small problem. Here is the situation: I have ten iMac G4 that I have networked together using a NetGear switch. I now need to get internet to these ten computers. The hard part about this is I need the switch to get the internet from an AirPort Extreme in here office and the switch is located down the hallway in another room. I don't have the option of running a sing CAT5 cable from the Base Station to the switch it needs to be done wirelessly. I will include a link to twitpic (http://twitpic.com/1x1xsz) where I have uploaded a diagram that I drew to give you a visualization of my problem.
Any and all suggestions are welcome.
    Thanks

    Welcome to the discussions!
You might want to explore all the options.
You could use wireless and setup an AirPort Express to "join" the wireless network that the Airport Extreme creates, then enable the ethernet port on the device to feed the switch.
While this should work most of the time, you would be trusting an entire network to a single wireless connection. I would think long and hard about this and use this only if there were no other alternatives.
You could also use a pair of ethernet powerline adapters to transmit the ethernet signal over the AC powerline. Just run an ethernet cable from the AirPort Extreme to an adapter and plug it in the wall. Plug the other adapter in the wall and then run and ethernet cable from the adapter to the switch.
Works great. Faster and more reliable than wireless by far. Newer powerline equipment is almost up to Gigabit speeds...almost as good as running an ethernet cable.
Just make sure that everything is on the same master electrical circuit.
Whichever you decide upon, it would also be a good idea to have a full understanding of the store's return policy in case things don't work out as hoped. Sometimes, it really is worth the extra expense to have the security of a traditional ethernet connection.

  • Small network redesign help

    Hello,
I work in a small company that has about 75 clients, and about 10 servers, and I have a refurb 4948 that's not setup yet, currently on the live network are asa5510, a sg300, voip system, and an old 2960 that's currently my core sw (the 4948 will replace this) and I'm planning on redesigning our flat network.
We've always had a single collision domain on vlan 1 which I read is not recommended for security, and I was wondering if it's worth the headaches of setting up vlans on this small network (I'm no Cisco veteran, just learned hands on reading forums and guides) So my plan is to finally set up a dmz on the firewall and I'm reading a bit more before I get into that, and put the servers in a vlan on that dmz, I read that the 4948 can do routing so I can probably set inter-vlan on it if needed. Here's a diagram of my planned network, if you guys can give me some guidance on a best way to redesign it I'd totally appreciate it. Thanks in advanced.

Why do you want the servers in a DMZ, are they going to be accessed from the internet ?
I would definitely recommend putting the servers on the 4948 switch has it has much better performance than the 2960. And as you say it can route as well so perhaps it might be an idea to replace the 2960 with the 4948 and then if you do need a DMZ use the 2960 as the DMZ switch.
Ideally you do not want your DMZ switch to have any internal LAN clients on it but that may not be possible for as you may not have enough ports. But you definitely do not want your DMZ switch to be routing, that should be left to the firewall.
In terms of using vlans the answer is it depends. With the number of devices you have it may not be worth doing unless you are experiencing issues at the moment. It is always a good idea to have the servers on a separate vlan because if they are the same vlan a faulty NIC in a client could bring down the servers as well but that said in your setup all the clients would be in the same vlan anyway. And generally people start to consider using vlans when the IP subnet gets to be bigger than a /24 which you are nowhere near.
I presume at the moment you route off the firewall ie. the inside interface of the firewall is the default gateway for the clients and servers ? If you stay with one vlan there is no benefit to routing on the 4948, you may as well just use this as a higher performance switch for the servers/clients.
I can't see a need for vlans here unless you are experiencing performance issues but the 4948 could well sort that out for you.
Perhaps you could clarify the bit about the servers and the DMZ and maybe go a bit more into what you want ?

  • New Airport Extreme N wireless network setup questions (WDS, D-Link)

I have finally been able to set up my Airport Extreme N network after numerous attempts over the last few weeks. I was getting a very weak signal in front of the house where my wife's G4 is connected wireless to an old Airport card and where all the systems (XBOX 360; Wii and PS3) are also wirelessly hitting the network.
The current configuration is as follows: In the office in the back of the house I have an Airport Extreme N basestation connected to the cable modem and have three workstations (One Mac and two PCs) wired to it. I set up a WDS network, so I set up the Airport Expresses as remotes. In the living room I have another Airport Extreme N basestation (as a remote as well) that is hooking up to the XBOX 360, Wii and PS3. I have enabled WEP security (not effecting the XBOX 360 since it is now "wired"). Here is the weird thing - I have a PC laptop with a D-Link Xtreme N card ( DWA-652) that cannot connect to the network. I enter the WEP password but it does not connect. Am I missing something on the basestation setup? Do I need to add the MAC address of the card anywhere. When I use the laptop's built in wireless it connects with no problem. By creating a WDS network did I disable the n functionality of the base station(s)? I am a lttle condused.
Also, prior to going to an all Apple wireless network setup, I bought the D-Link Xtreme N Gigabit Router (DIR-655). I was regretfully about to return it to Best Buy but I had an idea which may or may not work. I know that the D-Link does not support WDS but if I was to set it up as the main router and added the "main" Airport basestation as a wired bridge could I maintain the WDS network? The reason I ask this is because I would love to keep the gigabit for the wired machines in the office. Also, I am wondering if the D-Link notebook card is incompatible with the Airport network.
All I know is that I have spent alot of money and sleepless nights just trying to set this network up but thankfully Best Buy has a thirty day return policy so I will return what I can't use.
I appreciate any help and advice anyone can give me.
    Thanks.

    Hello!
I have noticed that some manufacturers (Linksys and possibly D-LINK) only accept upper-case WEP keys only.
This drove me nuts when trying to integrate a Linksys PC PCMCIA card into my old "g" network.
As far as using WEP, it's bad and broken; but I understand that your choice of security is limited to the devices that you are trying to network.
For what it's worth, I have my network set up with the AEBS 'n' connected to my Cable Modem, with one of the ports going to a gigabit switch for my wired network. I then have two AirTunes set up as WDS extensions for music & Internet delivery to two separate areas. The AEBS 'n" serves up DHCP and routing for the entire network.
It works quite well; I get 54 mbits/sec for the two WDS AirTunes, and 145 mbits/sec to one of my ATV's. My gigabit wired machines see data rates of 15-27 MBytes/sec (depending on the type of transfer).
    Good luck!

  • All Mac network setup?

    Hello all!
This is my first post here. Thanks for taking the time to help me with an answer to my question below.
I work for a small graphic design firm. We all work on iMacs here in our office (6 Macs total) with the exception of two PCs (1 for receptionist, 1 for data backup), and after a recent virus (Cryptolocker) hit one of our networked PCs, we're looking at going "all Mac" with our setup (if it's possible). I am here to ask for hardware/setup recommendations.
We have just a few needs as we plan our new network setup:
    1) A central file repository with at least 4 - 5 TB of storage space for shared files, which all 6 Mac computers must have access to;
    2) It has to be a wired network (for fastest file transfer speeds & security -- we already have tons of Cat5 cable installed);
    3) A way to backup the central repository to a Cloud service automatically on a nightly basis.
We looked at a Time Capsule, but they max out at 3 TB and we weren't sure if 1) we could daisy chain multiples, and 2) whether they can be backed up to cloud storage in any way.
I am wide open to suggestions on what we need to buy in order to set up the kind of network that we need. I am a Mac convert, so I don't know all there is to know about networking Macs either, so treat me like a 10 year old kid when it comes to explaining/outlining what gear you think we should buy, what hooks up to what, and the system/hardware settings we may need.
I appreciate the time that any of you are willing to take to outline this for me. Thank you in advance for sharing your expertise!

    Tesserax,
I have purchased a Western Digital My Cloud 2TB. Need Simple Step by Step guide for Optimal Apple Eco Setup, Sync, Organize, Maintain and Secure my media while freeing storage space on all devices, and maintaining anywhere accessibilty.
Western Digital has setup the drive on the network and it is recognized by iTunes, but they do not want me to move the libraries. iPhoto can import the My Cloud media into its library. They suggest copy'n'paste all media into the My Cloud public folders of Video, Photos and Music then delete the media from the devices. I dont see how you can Sync the iPhones, (future iPads), without moving the libraries, after all the object is to free space on the devices including the MacBooks.
How do I include the My Cloud into the MacBook Pro's Mountain Lion 10.8.5 TimeMachine Backup? (Leave MacBook Leopard 10.5.8 TimeMachine Backup for laptop only)
    I have:
2 Users that want to keep their media in separate folders, but would be nice to have a choice between joint or separate viewing ability
    MacBook Leopard 10.5.8
    MacBook Pro Mountain Lion 10.8.5
    2 iPhone 4 - 32GB
    Apple TV 2

  • Redesigning a small network

I've been tasked with redesigning a small network (15-20) including wireless.  Cisco recommends the RV220 as the entry point Firewall/Router/Wireless and researching there are apparently some good and bad sides of having everything all in one unit depending on who you ask.  The other option would be to get a dedicated Firewall/Router and then run the wireless on a seperate device(vlan). I'm fine with either solution but my main concern is performance on the physical connections as well as reliability with the wireless having good range and not dropping or having to reboot the router continuously.  Behind the router/firewall I will purchase one of the Cisco 24-port gig switches for physical connections through the office. Anyone have advice or suggestions on models to get for the router/firewall/wireless setup? Budget is not a problem although I don't want to pay for something that is overkill for 10-15 wired workstations and 5-10 wireless including a guest wireless. Thanks in advance.

I am going to sound like a broken record.  I am no big fan of getting a wireless router.  The reason is because of the location.  It would be ideal to place your wireless access point (WAP) in the middle of your wireless clients.  A router is normally installed in some far corner somewhere.  I mean this is OK if you are bio-medical lab and you are testing wifi with rats.
Ok, next what model of the router.  To answer that question, one has to ask you this:  What is your WAN bandwidth now and are you expected to grow any larger (size of the office and WAN bandwidth)?
The argument as to get a dedicated firewall or get a router with firewall functionality all depends on the question.

  • Help in creating a small network

I just bought a TC and I want to make a small network with two Airport Express boxes that I already had. Right now the TC is connected and working, but I have also connected the two AE but I can not make them show in Airport utility, when
I reset one of the AE it shows in Airport utility but I can not make any changes.
I have TC set to "Create a wireless network", is this correct? I want to extend my network, can someone please guide me step my step, I am illiterate about Networks
    Thank you

Ok, since you will be using a mix of 802.11n & 802.11g base stations, your only option will be to create a WDS to wirelessly extend the range of your TC.
Here are the basic steps to set it up:
(Note: To facilitate the WDS set up, place the base stations within near proximity of each other during the set up phase, and then relocate them to their desired locations when complete. Also, jot down the AirPort IDs for each of the base stations to be used in the WDS.)
o Perform a "hard" reset on the Time Capsule (TC) and a "factory default" reset on the 802.11b/g AirPort Express Base Stations (AX).
Main Base Station Setup - TC
o Click the AirPort status menu in the menu bar and choose the wireless network created by the TC.
    o Open AirPort Utility.
o Select the TC, and then, choose Manual Setup from the Base
    Station menu.
o Click Wireless in the toolbar, and then choose “Participate in a WDS network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu.
o Click WDS and then choose “WDS main” from the WDS Mode pop-up menu.
o Select the “Allow wireless clients” checkbox if you want client computer to connect to this base station.
o Click the Add "+" button and enter the AirPort ID of the AX.
o Click Update to send the new settings to the base stations in the WDS.
Remote Base Station Setup - AX #1
o Click the AirPort status menu in the menu bar and choose the wireless network created by the AX #1.
    o Open AirPort Utility.
o Select the AX, and then, choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu.
o Click AirPort in the toolbar and click Wireless. Choose “Participate in a WDS network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and choose the same channel as the main base station from the Channel pop-up menu.
o Click WDS and choose “WDS remote” from the pop-up menu.
o Enter the AirPort ID of the main base station in the WDS Main field.
o Click Update to transfer the settings to the base station.
Relay Base Station Setup - AX #2
o Click the AirPort status menu in the menu bar to join the wireless network created by AX #2.
    o Open AirPort Utility.
o Select AX #2, and then, choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu.
o Click AirPort in the toolbar and click Wireless. Choose “Participate in a WDS network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and choose the same channel as the TC from the Channel pop-up menu.
o Click WDS and choose “WDS relay” from the WDS Mode pop-up menu.
o Enter the AirPort ID of the TC in the Main AirPort ID field.
o Click the Add "+" button and enter the AirPort ID of AX #1.
o Click Update to transfer the new WDS settings to the relay and remote base stations.

  • ISE v1.1.1 Network Setup Assistant errors

    Hello Everyone.
I've been having some difficulties with ISE v1.1.1 while setting up and testing the SISE course. It's setup so that BYOD users can self-service a guest account with the ISE and register their device. After that the Network Setup Assistant (NSA) is supposed to push the certificates to the system and make it able to access the network. My problems are two fold in is situation. Firstly I have a second interface setup without a gateway for RDP access that the NSA seems to select everytime for the interface it wants to setup, I've bypassed this for the time being with direct access to the machine. Is there a way to direct the NSA to the correct interface? Secondly Once the NSA is running, it will push the RA certificate to the machine and then immediately goto an error that the NSA cannot setup the network. I cannot find an error code on the NSA agent nor can I find a log to help me pinpoint the error the NSA encountered. Any ideas or help I can recieve with this will be appricated.
As far as I can tell the cwa and nsp redirects are working as intended. The Switch for Dot1x downloads the correct dACLs and the authorization profiles are placed correctly
    Thank you.

  • Small network

Probably not the best place for this post, but probably where I'll find the best people to answer my question.
The problem... I wish to set up a very small network to use a printer and external drive with a wireless MacBook. without spending too much money.
The MacBook (obviously) roams the house on a wireless connection. The DLink router sits handily in the cupboard under the stairs. I would like to place my printer and external drive under the stairs with the router and for them to be wirelessly accessable from the MacBook.
The solution that comes to mind is to buy a Mac Mini for under the stairs and connect everything through this. But that seems a terrible waste of a Mini (and more inportantly Money!)
Any better ideas of how to acieve this would be very much appreciated.
    With thanks,
    David.

The mini will work and in fact has one advantage over the Apple Extreme Base Station but I think the AEBS is a better solution over all. The AEBS can share USB hard drives and with a USB hub it can share several. My wife and I each have our own for backing up and a third for our music and video collection. The AEBS can also share network printers and some USB printers. The last time I looked, the list of compatible USB printers hadn't been updated by Apple for quite some time, but network printers have really dropped in price. This is the sole advantage of a mini - you could hang any printer you wanted off of it.

  • VM Template network setup

    Hi guys
One more question about setting up VM Templates. I have completed setting up the Oracle database tier for E-Business suite and from the console I can access the VM machine and start the database. However the VM Machine is not accessible from other computers in the same network
ie, I am trying to access the host dbhost.my.com from windows host machine with the name lserver.my.com
both the Virtual Machine and the host are in the same subnet, bearing 192.168.0.10/24 and 192.168.0.36/24 respectively sharing the same gateway and dns server setups.
I doubt this is due to the network parameter I selected for the VM under the network tab. I have the following network setup, a network created with bonds/ports only. My second NIC is associated with the network against eth1
    Kindly help
    regards,
    raj

Ok guys, I got it working. All I need to do was the enable "promiscuous mode" with "Allow all" value and I hit the jackpot. Obviously the idea was provided through another thread here.
    Initial thread https://kr.forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=10232111
followup thread: No internet/LAN access from/to outside and domU
the second thread is a long long one, scroll down to the bottom for your solution ( http://serverfault.com/questions/366659/xen-bridge-over-virtualbox-bridge)
I hope this will help few others who are trying to setup the entire VM infrastructure using VirtualBox

  • What do you think of this network setup?

Optimized configuration may be like this:
Internet line -> pfSence (Firewall. DMZ if you need it, NAT, DHCP) -> Switch -> 6 TP-Link wireless routers in Brige mode(not routing) with simular SSID for clients roaming.
PS. If you prefere command-line interface, you can use last free version of Vyatta instead of pfSence. Vyatta works faster on the same server hardware.
PPS. If you prefere simplest way, place SOHO or Home  router instead of pfSence. Like Linksys EA6900 or Linksys WRT1900AC for example.

Yesterday, I was asked to visit a company to inspect their network setup and troubleshoot some massive WiFi problems they're having. This is what I found ...Server closet consists of;1 old old old box running FreeBSD (no idea what it does)Another old old old box running pfSenseA 3rd old old box running I have no idea but found it's A DNS with DynDNSA consumer grade 4port desktop switchA simple monoprice 24port switchThe networking is ran as such:Comcast Modem Direct Line to all 3 "servers"pfSense has 3 NICs WAN LAN DMZ
FreeBSD has 2 NICs with 2 WANs linesThe DNS box has 2 NICs with with 2 LAN linesThe DMZ NIC on the pfSense box goes to the desktop switch and from there to the APs
They have about 6 TP-Link wireless routers around the premises for their WiFi and each connect to the network via a power-line adapter.. (maybe 1 or 2 have...

  • What would be the best network setup for me?

I am planning a network system for my medical practise. The network will comprise a Macbook Pro(myself) , an Imac(receptionist) and a Macbook for occassional admin use.
I need some advice as to the best way to store the shared data. I will be using Filemaker Pro and will be storing patient appointments, demographics as well as clinical info, visit notes and investigations.
I am considering 3 possible setups
Have shared database on the Imac, backed up by a 500 gigabyte hard disk, or possibly a time capsule, using Time machine.
Have an ethernet hard disk for storage, but then I probably would need to have a different backup system.
Use a mac mini as a file server.
Or use an altogether different setup.
    I would appreciate suggestions.
    Thank you
    ajdk

    Hi ajdk-
Then it comes down to your morals and how carefully you want or need to protect patient confidentiality. Your basic network concept should work.
As a start, storing any patient data with regular business data and emails is asking for a security breach.
Make sure to back up your back ups and store said backup securely in a media-rated fire proof vault.

  • Temporary Network Setup Issues

Over the next 10 days I will be camping and spending time with mother nature... and my Macbook Pro of course! A few friends and myself rented a couple RV's and have them stationed outside of the farmers house where we are staying. Lucky for us the farmer has DSL (located in his basement) and we were able to conjure up 2 Airport Extremes and 1 Airport Express. The way I currently have the network setup is something like this: Airport Express is plugged into the DSL modem with the wireless set to 802.11n 2.4ghz and extending this network is allowed. The first Airport Extreme is located in a windowsill on the other side of the basement and is set to join and extend the network created by the Airport Express. The other Airport Extreme is in my RV and is set to join and extend the network created by the Airport Express.
The problem I'm having is a couple older Macbook Pro's and sometimes my new Macbook Pro are not connecting to the closest Airport Extreme (in the RV) and our iPhones are not finding a network at all? Any ideas why the iPhones and Macbook Pro's are connecting to the Airport Extreme located in the RV?
    Version: 7.4.2
    Nework Name: CF

    Airport Extreme 2: Channel 149, 1 - IP 192.168.1.149
DNS Servers for all 3 are set to: 192.168.1.1

    Thanx!

See if any of the following helps you to facilitate the WDS set up:
o Perform a "factory default" reset on all of the AirPorts used in the WDS.
o Be sure to record the AirPort IDs of each of the base station used in the WDS as you will need these during the setup through the AirPort Utility.
o Place the base stations within near proximity of each other during the set up phase, and then relocate them to their desired locations when complete.
o To avoid having to "switch" wireless networks during the WDS setup, attach each of the remote/relay base station, via an Ethernet cable, to the main base station. Of course, this would be dependent on the AirPort types used for the main/relays/remotes.
o Be sure to jot down the MAC addresses for each of the base stations to be used in the WDS as these will be required during the setup.
o When enabling wireless encryption, configure the relay/remote base stations first and the main base station last.

  • Network setup - how secure it should be?

    Hi Folks,
for the first time I try to setup a small network. Behind a firewall I run a DMZ and a LAN.
Now I was thinking to install oracle on a seperate subnet calling this DB-LAN...
Would it be usefull / necessary to secure connections from my DMZ to the DB-LAN by using the Oracle connection manager or is usually the traffic between DMZ and databases open on all ports?
    Any advise would be appreciated

    Hi Krystian,
thanx for your reply. Basically I would like to secure my database in case the servers on my DMZ are corrupted. According to that I think using CMAN should be sufficient as communication takes place inside my local network.
May I kindly ask the community for some help regarding this issue as I found loads of examples and posts concerning cman - but no real step by step tuto for all the network/admin/ files when having two instances on 10gR2 connected via cman...
    any help yould be appreciated
