Small tablet/laptop for LR use

What new small portable devices will run Lightroom 4? Looking for a good tablet/laptop for travel as a professional photographer, hoping for something in the windows market that isn't too pricey. Thanks for any suggestions

Anything that runs full Win 7 or Win 8 or Mac OS X 10.6.8 or later.
Try the Microsoft Surface Pro 3.

  • Shopping for a tablet/laptop for running Hyperion

Hi all, if you have $500~600 USD to spare and want to buy a tablet+keyboard to run Hyperion for both business and personal purposes, either working on a client's project or self-training, which tablet would you recommend to buy for installing the latest release of Hyperion? or even SAP?
Please name the model and ideal specs.
    Thanks!

Why does it need to be a tablet? Installing and running on a tablet is going to be a challenge, might be worth considering a laptop/network and a cloud solution.

  • Looking for the right laptop for school use

I'm hoping to find some good suggestions for a new laptop.
I'm a college student and need something I can take with me from class to class & use for typing notes (in Microsoft Word) and opening and editing PowerPoint documents.  I'm also wanting a fast internet connection.  Other than that, I'm hoping to spend as little money as possible.   I'd like something slightly compact, but price is more important than size.  I won't need much memory at all- my school documents will be stored on a USB and on my home PC. (Dell Studio PC)  No gaming, no need for music or pics.
    Any suggestions????  Thanks

Pretty much any netbook will work.
BUT.... the part that you'll need to clarify. Most netbooks/laptops don't come with an internet source built in. You'd either need to look at an air card from a wireless provider, or check to see if you'll have WiFi where you go to school. To be clear though.... Air Card = Internet pretty much everywhere. Wifi = Internet where it's provided by someone, either the college, or at your home, or Starbucks.
If you like my post, or solution to your issue/question, go ahead and click on the little star by my name and/or accept the post as the Solution. It makes me happy.
I'm NOT an employee of Best Buy, or Geek Squad, though I did work as an Agent for a year 5 years ago. None of my posts are to be taken as the official stance that Best Buy will take on your situation. My advice is just that, advice.
Unfortunately, that's the bad luck of any electronic, there's going to be bad Apples... wait that's a horrible pun.

  • Trouble connecting AE to my laptop for stereo use

I have a Dell laptop which connects wirelessly to my wireless dsl. I bought the Airport Express to be able to play ITunes wirelessly through my stereo. I assume that means I don't need to bother with my normal internet connection. But at first, my computer didn't seem to be able to recognize the AE, and its light just keeps flashing amber. Then, when i found the AE device in the connections part of the menu bar, i proceeded through setup but then, at the end, the connection failed. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I know there is something easy that I'm missing, but any help out there would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
I guess the short answer is, is there anywhere posted a step-by-step way of walking through the airport setup? thanks.

Follow the directions posted in this discussion by David Lovell, which will guide you through the process of configuring an Airport Express to "join" the wireless network created by your existing "wireless DSL router":

  • What is best laptop for personal use ?? my requirement is gaming and whole day personal usage ?

am fed up for buying a new laptops ?

These would be okay for gaming and still stick under the 1000 buck mark
The thing I look for in a laptop (that I want to game on) is a discrete graphics card notably either ATI or NVIDIA ... if it says Intel Graphics i stay away from those... they just aren't going to handle gaming that well.
These laptops are intel based processors that I kinda lean toward these days - you may get better value out of an AMD based machine... I personally like intel a little better right now for processors.
Memory - I just look for 3GB and above.
these really only apply to Best Buy... other places are going to have different models
    Asus - Model: G60JX-RBBX05 | SKU: 9736955
    Dell - Model: X1647-533OBK | SKU: 9682253
    Toshiba - Model: A505-S6033 | SKU: 9705203

  • Photoshop CS6 font look way to small in 72dpi for digital use.

I have been noticing font issues for quite awhile and kept ignoring so it is not the particular font it is happening with both web fonts and normal fonts only in photoshop.right now i have a developer who requires pixel perfect and font sizes.
I have a section with font size 12px they look like they're 5px the document settings are 72dpi , width 1200px height 200px.i have to set the font size to 30px to get the desired result for 12px.
when i test it in illustrator the 12px looks perfectly fine with same font with same document settings.i have reinstalled photoshop cs6 couple of times which didnt seem to fix it.i would like to fix this issue with photoshop to continue the work how do i go about it?

Check the document resolution, and make sure you are not confusing pixels with points (they're not the same thing).

  • Does anyone use the Asus G751JY-DH72X laptop for editing HD video in Premiere Pro

I wish to purchase a laptop for field use. The Asus G751JY-DH72X laptop seems to have great specs for HD editing in Premiere Pro (CC 2014).  I wonder if anyone has tried this unit and: 1) Does Mercury Hardware (GPU) acceleration work and 2) Does a Thunderbird array connected to the Thunderbird port work?

The Asus G751JY-DH72X appears to be the perfect Adobe CC mobile workstation spec wise. I am thinking of purchasing this myself. Adorama seems to have the best prices on the 512SSD, 1TB HHD model. According to the list of Adobe CC supported cards the Nividia GTX980M is officially on that list. I don't know about the array...but everything else is legit. Looking at the specs and add all the reviews...this is an excellent choice for an Adobe Animator/Editor.

  • I need to download firefox free and take it to home and download it in my laptop for using it web site developing

I tried to download FirFox free from public internet cafe and to take it to home to download it in my laptop for the use of developing htm and css codes. But unfortunatley I failed to download it. I got the answer from the "run" "this doc is corupted." So I need a help what I have to do to download it correctley?

If you are having problems downloading it from http://www.mozilla.com try downloading it from http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/3.6.8/win32/en-US/
You just need to download the setup file from that page - '''Firefox Setup 3.6.8.exe'''
If you are using Internet Explorer to download the file, you can right-click on the '''Firefox Setup 3.6.8.exe''' link and choose "Save Target As"
That link is for the English-US version of Firefox 3.6.8, if you need another language, select the Parent Directory link and then choose the folder for your language.
You should also check that the internet cafe allows downloading of executable files. It is also possible that the internet cafe has security software that is corrupting the download.

  • Old battery for home use and 1 "traveller" battery? good idea?

My powerbook is my main computer and is connected to the adapter 90% of the time.
Would there be a noticable benefit from only using the new battery if i need to go on the road and leave the current battery in the laptop for home use?
If so is it best to leave the new battery half charged when not in use?

You might want to read this page on the same site as the previous link, because most of my opinions are based on sources like that one, since I am not myself a battery expert.
So what would you class as a shallow discharge? 50 or
    75%?
This is going to sound stupid, but I don't really put a number on it, only because I haven't seen one. I only see the advice about shallow vs. deep discharges. But I also don't think it needs to be that precise. The most damaging percentages seem to be 0% and 100%. I am not sure there is so much difference between 50% and 75%. Also, it's pointless to finesse it around that range because if you are on battery and you need to work longer, you should work longer. Being able to use the runtime you bought is more important than ekeing out incremental runtime preservation. I think this is why Apple's advice is so general, because it will essentially accomplish the goal. ("An ideal use would be a commuter who uses her MacBook Pro on the train, then plugs it in at the office to charge.") Unplug it when you need battery, and plug it back in when you don't need battery.
As the battery will sometimes "rest" for a month or
more should i follow the apple battery care
suggestion and leave it at 50% ?
That seems fine. The page I linked to says 40%. Other sites say 40% and in the fridge. Again, anywhere in the ballpark is probably Close Enough.
Network, do you leave the battery at a specific
    charge when resting?
Resting plugged in, 100% obviously, can't do much about that.
Resting and not in the laptop (short term offline), I aim for 90-95%. The only reason for that is on the site I linked to, it says "The worst condition is keeping a fully charged battery at elevated temperatures," so I figure it's easy to not have it fully charged. However, I will not drain it to 40% for short-term room temp storage, because that would require planning at least an hour ahead to charge it back up to 100% before going out the door. If you forget to do that, you walk out the door with your 40% charged battery, and that 5ucks.
Resting long-term, I'll drain to around 40%, put it in a ziploc bag, and put it in the fridge. Some say getting it down to fridge temperature isn't important, and I really don't know. But all agree, never put it in the freezer!!!!!
There is a balance here between convenience and runtime preservation. If you wanted to obsess over runtime preservation you could drain to 50% and fridge it every time you take it out of the laptop, but the reason that's totally stupid is that every time you want to use it you have to get it back up to room temperature and charge it. That's why I like to have different criteria for might-need-it-today storage (almost charged, room temp) and long-term storage (half discharged in the fridge).
The reason i'm hammering at this is that this
powerbook is nearing the end of its cycle and i doubt
i'll invest in another battery in the future.
Totally understand. That's why I looked into this stuff myself. But since I have a battery that's pretty new, and I think I can get decent runtime out of it for at least 2 years, that means it should last long until the ol' PowerBook G4 feels out of date enough for me to upgrade.
The main points here are, if you want to use your battery for its intended purpose, don't worry about micromanaging the percentages, just use it normally, don't drain it every time, keep it cool when possible.

  • Not giving up.  Need laptop for FCP

Well I posted last week about owning an old laptop without a firewire port.
I have decided to look for a used Macbook Pro to do my editing on this boat trip.
I will be shooting with a Sony HVRZ5U (HDV to cassette tapes) and editing on FCP 6.0.6.
I have started looking for a reasonable Macbook Pro.  I want something somewhat current, but I
do not think that I need the latest and the greatest.  Setting my budget around $800.00 or
so, but will spend more if necessary.
A lot of the used computers come with Mavericks.  I would like to know if I would be OK
reformating and installing Snow Leopard.  That is the operating system I am using on my
MacPro and all seems to be working well.  Are there any newer laptops where this would
    not be possible?
On the other hand, I probably should get the best laptop for future use when i upgraded to
    more current editing software.
I kind of feel like I am in the middle somewhere between the past and the future.   I am leaning
towards Premiere pro and a new HD camera in the near future.
Any suggestions or cautions would be much appreciated.

Not wanting to overstep my bounds here, Shane, but the OP's app is version 6.06 of FCP, not 7.  Hence it will install into Snow Leopard much more easily than it will in Lion, as you have just suggested...

As I suggested to Kirk in his last thread:
Installing FCP6 in Lion, Mt. Lion and Mavericks:
    1) Pacifist: http://www.charlessoft.com/

    Pick your poison!
I just used the Pacifist method to install FCS2 into Snow Leopard Server running in Parallels in a test of virtualization, and the installation was very simple and straight forward.

  • Confused how to set-up a PC & laptop with Cisco WRVS4400N VPN for home use

Just bought a new PC and laptop and was recommended by (CDW) to use a Cisco WRVS4400N to set up the VPN.
For home use, only the PC and laptop, both running Windows 7.  I use Comcast as my ISP.
The mountains of docs confuses me to no end, can anyone simplify this for me.  I look at all the details and do not know where to start.
    In short,
    (1) configure router to recognize my PC and Comcast, and I guess the laptop.
    (2) configure laptop to go wireless and communicate with PC.
Any assistance would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Terry

For a very small office and a minimum of admin and tech know how, one approach i'd suggest is to not worry about user id collisions at all. any time anyone wants to use a mac you just set them up as a user, using consistent names/passwords.
Have a "Work" volume on each mac that has "ignore ownership on this volume" ticked. that way UID collisions aren't important.
You can make a Desktop folder on the Work volume and make a SYMBOLIC LINK from every user's home that replaces their desktop with the desktop folder on the Work volume.
Make it known that the user's home is for personal stuff ONLY, and the Work volume (inc the desktop) is where work in progress lives.
At a later date with some confidence in your network and your admin skills you could impose consistent UIDs using an OD master

  • Building wacom driver for tablet laptop

    Hi folks,
Here's my problem: I am trying to build the latest wacom driver for my tablet laptop so I can use touch sensitivity in gimp and other applications. I seem to missing some libraries or some thing, this is the relevant part of ./configure:
checking for valid Xorg SDK... "xf86Version.h missing"
    "Tried /usr/X11R6/lib/Server/include and WCM_XORGSDK/xc/include"
./configure: line 19566: cd: /usr/X11R6/lib/Server: No such file or directory
    and:
    *** WARNING:
*** Unable to compile wacom_drv.{o,so} without XF86 build environment
    *** or Xorg SDK.
*** wacom_drv.o will not be built
What is the Xorg SDK (software development kit?) and does anyone know where I can get it? Will I have to build Xorg from source? I have done a search in pacman and on the website and can't seem to find anything.
Note in other distros (ubuntu & gentoo) the package is called linuxwacom.
Thanks in advance for an help!
    Ben

    Ok, were to start?
I've looked at the link to the wiki that Wain posted, there were not much instructions but guess that its just to C&P the package build and run it? So I did but got errors.
    First this.
    '/PKGBUILD: line 189: syntax error near unexpected token `{
    '/PKGBUILD: line 189: `getvar(){
Then after the dependencies check and just after the "Starting build()..." I get this.
/usr/bin/makepkg: line 599: build: command not found
I searched the forum for the line 599 error and found a thread, but it didnt help much.
But I did a namcap on PKGBUILD if that is to any use.
    PKGBUILD ("pkgname$_cfgname") E: Missing md5sums
PKGBUILD ("pkgname$_cfgname") W: Missing Maintainer tag
PKGBUILD ("pkgname$_cfgname") W: Missing CVS Id tag
PKGBUILD ("pkgname$_cfgname") W: Reference to i686 should be changed to $CARCH
Im unsure about the whole Kernel compilation part, I must done something wrong.
So some help would be appreciated, I realy what my Voltio to work!

  • How do I best integrate existing laptops for a new server?  Can I use the existing home folders on the laptops and make them into Network Users?

How do I best integrate existing laptops for a new server?  Can I use the existing home folders on the laptops and make them into Network Users?

Yes it will work.  I've done it for a few users in my small office.  As with anything, there are quirks that you may or may not experience.  Most quirks are app-related, due to app developers hard-coding absolute paths into their apps for things like temp files (Photoshop).  Strategies for resolving these sorts of quirks can be found via google.  You would probably have seen these quirks already when using server-based home folders for your kids.  If you haven't noticed them, then you're probably fine.
The tech note you cited should be fine.  It doesn't explicitly say so, but you'll need to enable ssh on your server, at least temporarily, so you can upload your home folder to the server using scp, rsync, etc.  Don't try to copy the files up to the server via Finder.
Once all your files are transferred to the server and in the right place, make sure to chown them on the server, so they are owned by the userID you created for yourself on the server.
As with anything this involved, make a good backup of your laptop first.
Note I have one user that isn't too happy with the responsiveness of the periodic mobile home syncing.  She has about a decade of e-mail in her home folder, probably 50 to 100 emails per day, many with attachments.  Mobile home syncing takes a long time to check and sync this huge tree of itty-bitty files, eevn with server-side file tracking turned on.  The other users are happy.
The nice thing about mobile home syncing is that when a user "graduates" to an age where they've earned their own laptop, you can change them from a server home user to a mobile home user, with a minimum of fuss.  Also, if you lose or break a laptop, you can add a new replacement laptop to your network, and pull-down a replica of the home folder from the server, with almost no downtime.
