Small Text Question

I'm trying to create a document with text sizes smaller than 6 pt. The problem is that the "Other" option in the drop-down menu is grayed out and I don't know why. I tried several different fonts and different types of fonts, but they all had the same problem.
For the moment, I'm creating my text in Illustrator, then cutting and pasting it into InDesign, but I'd rather just create it in InDesign directly.
Any help would be appreciated.

Didn't read the part about the drop-down menu. Was just looking in the character palette. Nonetheless, it may be the same thing. If the Other field in Cindy's character palette is greyed out as well, which I'm guessing it is, inputing a value there may jump start the whole thing.

  • Context index on small texts

    Hello all,
After reading the main differences between CTXCAT and Context indexes, I realised that CTXCAT is used for small texts.
In my case I need to index a username, firstname and lastname of a person.
I tried CTXCAT but it doesn't support Left truncation, ( same as LIKE '%word' ). It only supports right and middle truncation (same as LIKE 'word1%' , LIKE
    'word1%word2'), etc.
And CTXCAT does not return any rank, while I need to order the results by the highest rank.
Is it possible to use Context Index on those really small text columns ? Each column is of datatype varchar2(50).
    Your opinions please.

    Hi,
it is indeed possible and you get indeed more functionality. By using context index you must be aware that is not transactional out of the box. Ctxcat has the advantage it can also index other columns other then the column on which the index is made.
I used it also on the same kind of columns you use (especially lastname) and I hit no issue (Oracle 10g and 11g).
Another option could be to create normal Btree indexes, but then you also have no score and maybe problems with left truncation queries.

  • Why is the small text blurry on photoshop?

why is the small text blurry on photoshop? i am **** a very small advert for a newspaper! and the text is printing blurry and when zoomed in is appearing all blurry? how do i stop this i only have photoshop and indesign

If a vector is intact, no flattening has been done. I don't talk about PDF layers, they are a complete different thing. When flattening is done no form or text survives as live vector or live text.
The pdf is X-1, so there are no Layers or transparencies in it, but the text is searchable still.
So I guess you are correct in that no flattening has happened, rather Photohop embedded two images in the pdf and clipped the one with the type.
Exaclty, whe a pDF X1 or 3 is created transparency is flattened and here it can come to unwanted rasterizing of vectors.
How will you create the correct boxes for bleed and crop in Photoshop?
For a newspaper add those will probably be irrelevant as bleed is hardly necessary.
Not at all, it is much easier to assamble files in a greater layout if all boxes are correct.
You know it good enough that this is not the right tool for that task?
Indesign is definitely the preferable tool for the task at hand, but claiming Photoshop cannot output type except pixelated was not proper.
I think in a forum we should not support the use of wrong tools but we have to show the best way to do things correct.
And there are also problems which cannot avoided with higher knowledge like coloured black (not in this ad). Yes, you an me we are capable to shift around the known problems with ads created in Photoshop, but others don't know these problems and will crash.

  • Is there an inexpensive Adobe product that can make small text changes in an InDesign document?

I run a small nonprofit where one of our staffers uses InDesign to design our documents. I often make small text changes and would rather not have to run them through her all the time. Is there any inexpensive Adobe product that would met me make these small changes, since I don't need the full Creative Suite (or even full InDesign) capabilities?

You say that you want an Adobe product, but you may not be aware that
there are other products that may work for you as well, in particular
DocsFlow or WordFlow (EmSoftware -- no affiliation to me!)
This would allow your designer to export the story to Word or GoogleDocs
where you make your changes -- and he or she then simply updates the
document in InDesign with the press of a button.
    Worth looking into.

  • IWork won't allow small text to be antialiased in PDFs

Are there any PDF / iWork / OS X experts out there who can please help with this one?
I have three documents which were to be printed as A5 booklets. As a result I formatted them on A5 pages using small text (7 and 8 point). I know this sounds small but they look fine printed out and the photocopier does a a great job of making the 30 page booklets.
The problem I have is when I export to PDF for use of the documents on screen the 7 and 8 pt text is not antialiased, no matter what zoom setting is used to view the documents. 9 pt text seems to be the smallest text that is antialiased in OS X but at least in Pages when you zoom in the smoothing effect is applied for easy on-screen reading and editing. However, in Preview (or Quicklook) any sub-9 pt text looks awful at every zoom setting even though I have Preview set to 'smooth text and line art'.
The only potential workaround seems to be increasing the page size and scale in 'page setup…' in Pages but because the document is quite complex this leads to a lot of layout errors. I realise now I should have started with a larger page, reducing the scale when printing.
(Just to make things more confusing, Textedit shows unsmoothed sub-9 pt text at every zoom setting but DOES export PDFs with antialiased sub-9 pt text.)
Can anyone see another workaround? Thanks!

Thanks again everyone. It is possible my original issue has become lost with these super-close-ups! Yvan seems to have noticed what I have, so even though his text is huge (and therefore very smooth), you can see that Preview isn't anti-aliasing the text. My problem is viewing the text at relatively small sizes. My 7 and 8 point text end up looking like this in Preview:
If I scale the text up (by altering the page size and scale in Pages > Page setup) then the text looks less jaggy in Preview. Unfortunately this process messes up my formatting throughout the document. These screen grabs were taken while the PDFs were the same size on the screen:
Just to emphasise my point, here is the effect of toggling the 'smooth text and line art' setting in Preview. 7 and 8 point text from Pages is never anti-aliased for me!
Sorry for the delay - away from broadband at the moment so sharing the files was a struggle (and this is the first time I've tried this so bear with me if it doesn't work...)
    Thanks again.

  • Everything is very small, text, pics, programs dont even fill 1/4 of a page I can not read it and if i click apple plus things overlap each other so now what???

everything is very small, text, pics, programs dont even fill 1/4 of a page I can not read it and if i click apple plus things overlap each other so now what???

Can you think of any recent changes on your computer or in Firefox, new programs, add-ons, etc.?
Have any cats walked across your keyboard recently?
My first guess is the same as yours, which is a "zoom" issue. Holding down the Command key and pressing 0 (zero) should reset the zoom level of the current site to the standard level. Is that still too small?
Regarding content overlapping, this can occur for a few different reasons. Please check on these:
    (1) "Text Only" zoom
If View menu > Zoom > Zoom Text Only has a checkmark, click it again to unselect it.
    (2) Manually setting font sizes
In the Preferences dialog (either the "3-bar" menu button or the Firefox menu) > Content > "Advanced" button
If the Minimum font size is set to a number larger than 9, change it to 9 or None. A large minimum font size often will wreck the layout.
At the top, there is "Fonts for" drop-down that usually will say Latin or Other Writing Systems. You will want to make the same change for both of those, so select whichever one isn't currently displayed.
Finally, make sure the checkbox for "Allow pages to choose their own fonts" is checked and OK out of the dialog.
    Any difference so far?

  • How to get clear small text on black background?

    hi,
I'm trying to get some clear small text on black, in the letterboxed area below some video. I've been trying 14pt, with a bit of tracking, using Arial, Helvetica, Skia, and Lucida Grande. They all look clear enough when rendered out to QT, but on my production monitor they dont look good. When I compress it for DVD (using very high bit rate settings) they really fall apart.
I even tried making the text in After Effects, which is what I do with my subtitles, but those are larger (about 24points) and for some reason the small text generated in After Effects looked worse than the native FCP text.
Does anyone have suggestions for the best combination of font and point size to give me clear small text for a black background? I dont mind going up a few point sizes.
Any suggestions would be highly appreciated. Thank you....

    Hi all,
Many thanks for all the suggestions.
I wound up using Helvetica 18pt, white set at 85%, and applied stib's de-interlacer (http://www.pureandapplied.com.au/plugins.html).
I tried Guassian Blur set to 0.1 but that made it less clear and didn't really help with the flicker. I also made sure to set the position to an even numbered line (I'm using uncompressed)
When I tried Helevetic 17pt, the "a" and the "e" both fell apart towards the top of the letter making them hard to read. I would guess that "g", "i", and "j" would also have problems had I used them.
I didnt have enough time to test, but I wonder if there isnt some font that is better suited for this kind of work than Helvetica. Futura is nice and clean, but a bit thin. Helvetica Neue is also good, but not much differnet than Helvetica. Verdana and Lucida Grande might also be good choice. What do you all use?
    thanks again...

  • Small Text when printing

When I type a message in Mail in Arial 12pt regular font, it seems smaller than it should. I tested it by printing the message, and comparing it to the same font created in Word (also in Pages, FireFox, and iWeb) showed that the text from Mail is at least 2pt smaller than the other apps.
Tested with other fonts as well.
Everything works fine in other applications. Word used to have the same issue, but I deleted the font cache and restarting fixed that.
And, yes, I have restarted both Mail and the laptop (Mbp 17").
    No other apps are running.

First thing I would do is set every print job to have a preview. Go into the Windows menu, Printers folder, right click your printer icon, left click Printing Preferences, features tab, click Show preview before printing, left click Apply, finally left click Okay.
How long has this been printing small text? Did it start after updating something or installing something? If that is the case, then the change could have affected the print settings. Is it only from the web browser? Is it only from a few programs, or all programs that can print?
Printing from the internet can give mixed results. Pages can have their own encoding for printing functions, which can complicate things. I find that if I capture the portion that I want to print, and then paste it into Word (or WordPad), then it will print out much better. If there are images, several captures may be necessary to print the areas wanted properly.

Experiencing very small text using adobe connect on my new Microsoft Surface 3. Any solutions?

I've heard of this happening before, "it seems that you may be having problems with display scaling of Microsoft Surface. Display scaling effects the way content and controls appear on the screen.
Have you tried messing with scaling at all?
You can try this options: Upgrade Surface Pro from Windows 8 to Windos 8.1, disable display scalling, or reduce display scaling for windows.

  • How to zoom into small text in Title Edit Window?

    Ok,
So when I am putting in disclaimer text in the Title edit window, I can't read it.  I could if I could zoom into it or at least increase the scaling of the video preview.
Someone else has had to have had this problem.  As you can see from the attached image, all the wasted extra space around the video, if I could just zoom in like you can on the preview window I could read it.
How can I zoom into the area I am trying to edit with small text???
    Pleas help, anyone???

First of all Reset Current workspace, does not seen to fit the window also I would make the titler a floating window.
You cannot zoom in but you can make it full screen by hitting the 'tilde"(grave) key.
You can also scale up the text, adjust, and scale it down again.

  • Does the higher resolution of the retina display mean smaller text

    Hi,
I have trouble seeing smaller text, and I am wondering if the higher resolution on the 13 inch macbook pro with retinal display will make Safari's menu and fonts or any other applications fonts smaller and therfore harder to read.
I figured a higher resolution means more can fit on a page and therefore everything is smaller.  Not sure though?

In the Displays Preferences, you can choose the actual resolution you want displayed on the monitor. You're correct that a higher resolution will provide more screen real-estate at the expense of everything, including text, being smaller. You can also choose to make everything larger but less will fit on the screen. You just can't have it both ways unless you get a 27" LED display and plug it into the MacBook Pro. Just don't try to carry it around.

JPEG is a poor file format choice for small text. What is the
    size of the
text and what are the dimensions and resolution of the JPEG
    file? How will
    the file be used?
Can you be more specific in what you mean by a border? If you
    mean blurring
of the text into the background color, you can control that
    to some degree
    with anti-aliasing settings in Export>JPEG>Setup.

  • Big and small text alignment

Why doesn't InDesign align text to the border of the textframe?
Especially with big and small text in the same textframe, the gaps before the text are scaled too making text optically not aligned at all.
Optical margin alignment helps a bit, but not good enough.
    Am i overlooking something?
    Still working in CS3 btw.

Ok knowing the right term "side bearing", i did some google searching and stumbled upon this topic at indesignsecrets:
    http://indesignsecrets.com/removing-space-along-left-edge.php
There's a link to a script from Dave Saunders that aligns the letters optically to the left. Tested and works! InDesigns own optical margin alignment should be turned of though. I immediately assigned a shortcut to this great script.
PS: Concerning the "why is side bearing split into left and right": i guess for example a letter 'D' for example shouldn't have equal side bearings because of the rounding to right.
