Smaller system window fonts
I just purchased a 60" monitor for my mac. I have set the resolution in the System Prefs to the smallest image. I have also reduced the type on the finder but my system windows font areas are still too large. Can I reduce the fonts of the system windows, i.e. mail, left area with inbox, junk, etc?
Yes, I have done that but it only effects the messages area of the window. Is there any way to change the sizes in the areas of the window that contain the inbox, junk, "on my mac", etc? Thanks!

In our company there are some folks that require often new fonts that they take from the internet. Unfortunately, some of them have offices on in a diferrent country, so going there to insert my admin paswoord is not a solution.
If you copy the ttf file into the C:/Windows/Font folder is enough, you don't have to also add the registry.
One way to bypass the window that asks for admin credentials is to insert my crdentials into the bat file (runas). But this is very unsecure, as I am an administrator.
Is there a way to create a shared folder that can also store fonts that can be used by windows? Can I give them the right to modify files in this folder without making them administrators? Or do you see any solution to this issue? Any help would
be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance.Another solution which will not compromise your security is to create a share folder and have the users to download fonts to the folder. After that a simple schedule task GPO on clients to copy the
*.ttf files from the folder to the C:\Windows\Fonts folder. Since tha task can be run by administrative privileges I guess there will be no problem.

How to find font in Indesign, which is in Windows Font Folder?
Hi
I need to use Monotype Sorts font.
This font was not in the Indesign list of fonts.
I bought the font and downloaded it to a file on my hard drive.
It is called Monotype_sorts.ttf
I then went to Windows Font Folder in Cpanel and installed it.
I then followed advice I found on the web and copied the font to the Adobe/Indesign CS5/ Fonts folder.
However I still can't see the font within Indesign in order to use it.
Any help would be very much appreciated as I need to try and work this out very quickly.
I'm on Windows Vista.
Many thanks lizfunction(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
... I then went to Windows Font Folder in Cpanel and installed it.
I then followed advice I found on the web and copied the font to the Adobe/Indesign CS5/ Fonts folder.
That was some bad advice you got there. Indesign is fully able to use all of your installed fonts -- the ones in Windows. Only a very few specialized types of fonts that cannot be installed in Windows need to go into ID's "private" Fonts folder. (And another reason would be you want to keep your Windows system 'clean'.)
The problem may very well be that InDesign now sees two versions of the same font, and refuses to let you select either, just to make things not too complicated. So delete the font in one of your locations.
If that doesn't work either, read this thread on how to reset InDesign's internal font database:

hello
First, Indesign function to automatically open fonts from "Document fonts" folder is fantastic, quasy font manager. BUT, fonts is available ONLY for THAT indesign document, no other application can use it, even from CS6 suite. This is probably the most stupid decision about how this function must work. IDEALLY, fonts will be available for ALL application inside CS package until indd doc is closed. If I need some font for editing links in photoshop, illustrator I need to install them. This workflow have wrong concept.
We now have problem, sorry Indesign have problem. Example, I need type1 font mt-symbol for mathtype AND for Indesign. This font is installed in c:\windows\fonts folder. Everything work fine. When I make package from Indesign and reopen indesign indd document inside package, Indesign report that mt-symbol IS INCOMPLETE. WHY, BECAUSE CONCURENT FONTS from both C:\windows\fonts folder AND FROM "Document fonts" folder. If I rename "Document fonts" folder, Indesign open font only from system and everything work properly.
THIS IS BIG PROBLEM, fonts circles around workflow/folders and always will be duplicates in "document fonts" and system\fonts folder because different application need same fonts.
Any solution?Another problem with the Document Fonts folder that we just noticed: in CS5, you could place Windows Type 1 fonts (.pfm and .pfb) into the Document Fonts folder on a Mac and InDesign would activate them.
This no longer works in CS6. (Bug report filed.)
Huge bummer, as this was a great timesaver and workaround in a high-production prepress environment when working with old Windows files. Hopefully this was not an intentional change and will be restored in a later bugfix release, or at worst in CS7. -
Windows Fonts Will Not Display In Photoshop Elements 9
Hi,
I have a new Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit computer and have just installed Photoshop Elements 9. When I use the "Horizontal Text" tool and click on the fonts drop down list to select a font, it only lists a small number of fonts and does not display all the standard Windows fonts such as Arial, Times Roman, Verdana etc which all display perfectly fine in my other applications such as Word, Excel, Publisher, Notepad etc. Has any one got any ideas as to why all my Windows fonts are not displaying in the drop down list? Is there a special setting I need to configure for Photoshop 9 to see all my Windows fonts?
Regards,
Paul.Hi 99jon,
Thanks very much for your reply. Yes I am using a Laptop and you were spot on. If I use the UP/DOWM cursor key's I can scroll through and see the list of all my fonts ok. I was originally trying this by using my scroll up/down wheel on my mouse and for some reason it will not scroll the list (I did not think to try the cursor keys) so thanks very much for your help!

Put my macbook pro to sleep. When I opened it, the desktop window is small and I can't resize it. All applications now run in the smaller size window. Can't make it fill the screen. Just switched from windows. Thank you.
Check to see if the resolution has been changed in System Preferences.

OSX System Wide Font Size?
I just bought my first 27 inch iMac..
Although I'm lovin it, I do have it sitting at arms length away from me and am finding the font size vert small..
With this high res display the font is a bit tiny and am just wondering if its possible to change the system wide font size?
Ny eyesight is great but I'm finding that I need the computer right up to my face to be able to comfortable see the fonts..
-FrankieThere are some suggestions here
https://discussions.apple.com/message/17593815#17593815
including changing the screen resolution and the font size for folder and icons.
Another option not mentioned there is to enable the 'Use scroll gesture with modifier keys to zoom' option in
> System Preferences > Accessibility | Zoom
After that, you can hold down the 'control' key and 2-finger swipe to zoom the entire screen. -

be regenerated over time.)
5. Restart the Windows Font Cache Service.

Warning: Bogus Helvetica Font May Appear in System/Library/Fonts
I received an unreadable email message from a Windows-using friend recently. The text was a jumble of fractions. Things got weirder later that day when I noticed the same font corruption on Amazon.com and a few other sites that evidently use Helvetica. Restarting my computer cleared up the problem, but it recurred. Eventually I discovered a pair of bogus "HelveticaMM" fonts in System/Library/Fonts, which obviously did not belong there. Not only are these fonts not part of OS X's complement of System fonts; in fact, they don't even exist. There has never been a Multiple Master (MM) version of Helvetica. Logging in as Root and tossing these bogus fonts has solved the problem (hopefully for good), but the question remains: How did these fonts get into my System Fonts folder in the first place? It certainly appears that my friend's garbled email message was involved in the corruption of my System fonts, but is this possible? If so, it would be (for me, at least) my first-ever experience in more than 20 years of using Macs with System corruption caused by an outside agent.
Has anyone seen anything like this before? If so, what's your take on the cause? More to the point: How could one prevent something like this from happening again?
Thanks!
20-inch iMac 2.16GHz Core 2 Duo Mac OS X (10.4.9)Meanwhile, at least I've nuked the offending fonts.
There is nothing "offending" or illegitimate about these fonts. They are installed by OS X 10.4, not by "some application installer." They do not cause the problem of seeing fractions instead of Latin, which has been experienced and solved by hundreds of people before you. That results from a different font, Helvetica Fractions, which is not installed by OS X or by any Apple application.
Your information on OS X and MM fonts is at least 2 years out-of-date. Please read the link you were provided earlier, which is from April 2005:
http://images.apple.com/macosx/pdf/MacOSXFontTB.pdf
From page 9:
"Support for industry standards
Mac OS X delivers industry-leading support for popular font formats.
• Multiple Master. This special type of PostScript font allows variation of one or more font parameters (such as weight) to create a large number of custom styles, also known as instances. Mac OS X can activate already created instances of Multiple Master fonts." -
Faux column background not aligned in smaller browser window...
I'm working on a three-column webpage. I'm using fixed-width columns, with the left and right columns floated (started with a dreamweaver layout). I am also using a background applied to the <body> tag to apply the faux column look, so that the side column backgrounds flow all the way down the page.
My layout is a total of 780px wide, but the background image I'm using is 2000px wide. It's the same image that was used in the previous version of the website, and I can only guess that the image is that wide to "fill" the extra space around the main content when the browser window is wider than 780px. Because the image is so wide, I have it styled to center on the page. When my browser window >= 780px wide, everything looks great... the faux columns line up perfectly with the divs. However, when I make the window less than 780px, things get messy.
My layout elements stay where they are, meaning that the left edge of the container stays aligned with the left edge of the screen and a scroll bar appears at the bottom. However, since my background is set to center itself, it continues to try to center itself in the browser window. Basically, the content is not centered in the browser window, but the background is, causing the faux columns to not line up with the divs. The relevant CSS I have applied is:
body {
font: 100% Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
margin: 0;
padding: 0;
text-align: center;
font-size: 12px;
color: #666666;
background-repeat: repeat-y;
background-position: center;
background-image: url(../img/BG-gray.gif);
#container {
width: 780px;
margin: 0 auto;
text-align: left; /* this overrides the text-align: center on the body element. */
Note: everything within the container div stays where it should relative to the container, so I didn't include the CSS for them, though I can post it up later if you really need to see it.
Is there a way to keep everything lined up in a smaller browser window? Or, would it be better to trim down the background image to the same width as the container?
Sorry for the long message, but I'm new at this. Please don't eat me.Same problem, only worse. That causes the background to show from the very left edge of the image. All my text is in the gray area in the example below. Let me try to clarify...
The background image is something like this (colors are for clarity):
(filler)
Left faux column
Main content goes here. This is always in the center of the browser window.
Right faux column
(filler)
Where the combined width of the blue, white, and red sections is 780px. This is what I want my layout to line up with, the blue and red columns being the faux left and right columns, respectively. The gray areas are "filler" that colors the excess width in browser windows that are wider than the fixed width of the main content. With the background set to centered, the white stripe is always centered in the browser window. As long as the window is wider than my layout, the layout is centered in the browser window as well.
I'm looking for a way to either center the background relative to the layout container, not the browser window, or to keep the layout container centered in the browser window when the window is narrower than the layout. -
CS3: Fonts missing even though installed in Windows\Fonts
Fonts are "missing" when opening a CS2 Indesign document in InDesign CS3.
For example, a document uses Adobe Caslon Pro Bold. Under InD CS2, this font was located in Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Fonts. That directory is now empty (except for some additional fonts that weren't part of CS2). I guess uninstalling CS2 cleaned out this directory.
When opening the document in CS3, I get a message about a missing font. The only available Caslon face is "Regular".
There are 5 Adobe Caslon faces installed in Windows\Fonts (regular, bold, italic, bold italic, semibold, semibold italic). But CS3 doesn't recognize anything but "regular".
I had made backup copies of all Adobe fonts that I had installed with CS2, so I copied those backups to Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Fonts. Now InD CS3 finds them.
Has anyone else had this problem? What is the solution? I have re-installed CS3 but this doesn't fix it.First up, ATM. ATM4.0 (Light or Deluxe) is not supported under W2K or XP and should be uninstalled. After that, the 4.1.2 patch should be run, which just edits the registry, since removing ATM leaves Windows unable to install Type 1 fonts. Uninstalling ATM4.1 on any Windows platform prior to Vista (which it's not supported under) causes PFM files to be left unassociated with the system font applet preview page. The patch fixes that too. These are the only problems with having ATM on XP and they're usually easily fixed.
My first step would be to remove ATM because you're running an unsupported version.
> I did not try the current "light ATM" release because the release text on the Adobe site did not suggest the necessity to upgrade.
Well, that version of ATM will not state anywhere that it supports XP (given that it predates XP), so the prudent course would be not to install unsupported software until you're sure it will do no harm. And entering the terms "ATM" and "XP" into Adobe's search engine quickly turns up advice not to install any version prior to 4.1.
> Is there any reason one should only use OT fonts in ID?
If you're working cross-platform (as you are), then OT is definitely the preferred option, but ID can utilise Type 1 and TrueType fonts with no problems.
I have most of the BT Futura fonts you listed, though I only have the T1 versions to hand, though I could dig out the TT ones and might. But there are a couple I'm not clear on from your list: BT (do you mean you have BT Regular or Roman and BT Book installed and accessible in FrameMaker?); Medium/Extra Bold Cond (is this medium condensed and extra bold condensed, because you have also listed MdCn BT?); TMed (what's the full name of this?).
Apart from those three, all the fonts showed up in ID, once I had deactivated the TT versions that came with Windows. Most were listed as variants under Futura BT, including the roman of LtCn BT and MdCn BT. The last two fonts showed up as separate entries in the font list, but only the itals variant, as you saw.
There is a bug in ID that leaves it sometimes unable to distinguish between regular and book weights, but the issue here seems to me to be one of strange style links in the BT fonts, not anything to do with ID.
To summarise, remove ATM, check you don't have the Windows TT versions active, and then check all the variant drop-down menus. Then report back here. -
System folder fonts missing in Dreamweaver CS3
I am in the process of designing a website. I started it in
photoshop; where I used Myriad Pro, light.
I then took it into Fireworks, sliced it, then exported into
dreamweaver. Dreamweaver doesn't have Myriad Pro in its list?
(though it is in windows system folder 'fonts')
Does anyone know how I get it into dreamweaver please?

Windows font dialog box?
Is there such a thing as a standard Windows font dialog box,
similar to the
Open and Save dialogs that you can access with the FileIO
Xtra? Something
that would allow a user to select a font that was loaded on
their system,
select color, size, style etc and then return the selection
so that Lingo
could modify a text cast member? Or am I going to have to
create this
myself?BuddyAPI has a, windows only, function "baFontList" that will
return a
list of the fonts that are installed on a user's computer.
There may be
others.
Once you have the list of fonts, you could build a screen
that allows
the user to select the options that you give them. Or, you
could use the
MUI Xtra to create a system type window that contains all of
the options
that you want the user to select. Or, you could create a
Movie in a
Window that mimics a system window to do the same work.
