Smart Album as selector within Smart Album

As far as I can tell, there is no way to have a Smart Album use as a parameter another Smart Album. iTunes allows this and I use it extensively.
Am I missing something?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. No, you're not missing anything. You can reference another SA in a SA.

  • Smart Album search of a specific album?

Is it possible to limit the query of a smart album to a particular album. The "find" command seems to limit a search to a specific album while smart albums seem to query the entire project. I would like to have a smart album limit its search to a particular album (or possibly several particular albums).
    I am using Aperture 1.5.3

Smart Albums can search within a Project, the entire Library or a all the Projects within a Blue Folder, depending on where you made the Smart Album. In other words, only 'containers' that images actually live in - remember that Albums only contain references back to Projects.

  • How can I create a smart playlist of least played complete albums?

    Hi,
How can I create a smart playlist of least played complete albums? (of a specific genre, say jazz)
What I would like to do is to have a playlist that will always automatically pull the least played albums of a specific genre (ideally, but not necessarily, with a random album play within that playlist) Hope you are getting the concept!
    Thank you for any idea!
    Daniel
p.s. there have been solutions for earlier versions of iTunes, none working with iTunes 10 apparently

As you say, you can't access the Gapless property in a smart playlist rule.
The obvious way that comes to mind would be to create another playlist with stuff to exclude from your final list and put the gapless tracks and anything else that won't filter out easily into it.
Yes you say but I have oodles of gapless tracks and I don't want to gather them up by hand.
OK, so you'll need a script. Here is one I've just created for the purpose: GaplessToPlaylist

  • Missing Library Albums and Built in Smart Albums

    Hi,
In AP3 I am missing the built in "Library Albums" with the associated smart albums (★★★★★,Rejected etc). I did a search and someone solved the problem by deleting the BuiltinSmartAlbums.plist located at user/library/application support/aperture and then restarting Aperture.
My problem is I cannot locate the plist file. It's confusing, as I can create a new library and the Built in library and associated smart albums are available. However, I would like the option in my existing library.
Does anyone have an idea how I can recover the built in Album/smart albums?
    Thanks

Well, they aren't in the libraries that are "split" from another, so I guess that is how you wound up in this situation.
You can simply remake them, takes only a few minutes and put them in your own folder (but then you might have problems with sorting).
How about just importing your entire current lib into a clean new lib that has the albums?

  • What is the easiest way to sort photos within an album.  I have photos from a trip but they are all mixed up.  Photos from one part of the trip are showing up in other parts.  Please help.

I have a MacBook Pro laptop and am trying to use iPhoto.  I uploaded pictures but they uploaded out of order.  Photos taken from different locations on my trip are all mixed up and I would like to sort them in chronological order.  Things I have tried have been time consuming and often take several attempts before the moved photo "takes" to its new location within the album.  If anyone can provide step by step instructions for this senior, it would be very much appreciated.  Thank you.

following article tells how to sort photos in iphoto:

    also

article on smart albums in iphoto as well:

these should help answers your questions, also in every apple application if you look on the main menu bar they all have a help section that is very useful in getting basic how to instructions.

  • Can't drag & drop photos within an album in iPhoto6

I can't change the order of photos in an album by dragging. Looking at the other posts, I've fixed the Helvetica bug several times (by re-activating the font in Fonts Book) but it still doesn't work. When trying to drag, the photo will migrate to a strange place within the album, or not at all. Thanks for any help.

Thanks for your replies, TD. They are ordinary albums. I haven't made any smart albums yet. It's strange, sometimes when I'm trying to relocate a photo I'll see the cursor flash in another place on the page and the photo will migrate there. Sometimes there are no cursors at all.

  • Sorting within iPhoto albums:  eliminate carryover from prior manual sorts?

I am working with a large series of photos from a recent vacation, arranging the images for captioning and sharing as slideshows.  I've pulled the images over to new albums, one per day, and would ideally sort them once by date, then change to manual sort and adjust a few images' position in the queue.  But when I switch from date sort to manual sort, the images immediately revert to a relatively random-looking order that I think must be the order in which they were edited and then pulled into the finishing album.  Since some of these albums include several hundred photos, the idea of starting over with completely manual sort of all of the images is VERY painful.  Sorting them by date and then copying and dragging the sorted images to a new album, and then resetting to manual sort, reverts them to the same order they had in the previous album.
Any suggestions for how to fix the date sort some way, then do a fresh manual sort that leaves the date sort as my starting point?
    (and is the question clear?)

    Another thank you.
I could not figure out how to manually movie my photos & videos.  "Manually" & "Reset manual" were greyed out in Smart Albums.  So I deleted Smart Albums and just made an "Album."   "Manually & "Reset manual" magically appeared un-greyed.
Took me awhile to figure out that you can only manually move the last picture or video.

  • On the iPhone 4: where are the song times within an album in iTunes Store?

Has anyone noticed that song time (or track time) has been omitted from the view of album contents in the iTunes Store on the iPhone 4?  If one takes an iPhone 3 running ios 3.1.3 and looks up an album in the iTunes Store and checks the songs listed within the album, the time of each song is shown in light gray before the buy/price button.  However, if the same procedure is done with an iPhone 4, the time of each song within the album is missing!  (Search an album on each phone—such as the Beatles’ Revolver—see the list of songs included and observe the difference.)  Since it has nothing to do with the iTunes Store itself, why is this?  In my internet search, I have not found a comment about this curious omission of important information—the length of a song (certainly useful before one buys a song from an album or if one compares various versions of the same musical composition by different artists).  Because song time is available in iTunes online by using a computer, why not show this on the current iPhone 4 since it can be seen on an iPhone 3 that still uses ios 3.1.3?

You can't on your phone, you can only gift the album - you will need to use your computer's iTunes

  • Question about the arrangement of music files within an album

    Hi all,
I used to have a cheap MP3 player that worked just like a portable hard drive--drag-and-drop and organized into folders. I wanted the quality of an iPod, but with the organizational convenience of my old player, so I decided to change the tags of all my MP3s so that the album titles were the titles of all my old folders. This basically worked--whenever a folder was organized by tracks, I would open up the album, and there were all my files, properly arranged. The problem is when the "album" wasn't actually an album. I tried to change all the track numbers to "1" hoping that the iPod would just then arrange the files in alphabetical order by title. But it doesn't. I can't figure out what system it uses, but I figured you might know. Here are the questions:
How does the 5G iPod determine the file order of tracks within an album when all the tracks have the same number?
    and
If track number is the only thing it checks, is there any way for me to cheat and get the songs in alphabetical order without manually giving them all a track number?
    and on an unrelated note
Anyone find the standard issue Apple earbuds to be too large? Any recommendations for slightly smaller earbuds that are at least at the same quality level? A few suggestions at different price levels would be appreciated. And I assume you already have a discussion for that, so a link would suffice.
    Thanks,
    John

wow that is crazy i can't believe it is able to transpose audio loops (not midi) to different keys. especially stuff with more then one note playing at the same time like guitar strum.
I know how to set up the key in logic and change it etc... i was really wondering how it is capable of doing this?? does it have some kind of melodyne or autotune built in to it?? i never heard of software being able to do this with pre recorded audio that plays more than one note at a time.

  • How do I save photos to CD/backup HD within their albums in iphoto 8.1.2?

I used to save photos in their intact albums by using the "Originals" folder. Now I don't seem to have one with iPhoto 8.1.2. So if I drag a bunch of albums to a CD to burn, say, they just go in as filenames, not within the albums I took pains to make. How can I fix this? Thanks for any help!

Thanks for your answer. I guess I'm not being clear--I mean that I want the albums to remain intact, not just the photos. . .so, for example, if I have photos grouped as "Christmas 2009" in one album, and "Thanksgiving 2009" in another, that is how I want them saved. With the way that you describe, I still wind up with a list of filenames, not two, nice, clean albums.

  • How do I edit the order of songs within an album?

I have my Ipod plugged in and need to fix the order of songs on a few albums. Can someone please let me know how to do this? Thanks a lot.

If the songs are in a playlist open iTunes then click on the playlist. Click on the number column (extreme left). Click on the song you want to move and drag it to where you want it to be. Right click on the playlist name and select "Copy to play order". Connect your iPod, if you are updating automatically it will pick up the change. If you are updating manually then you connect first and when the iPod appears in the source list carry out the process above directly in the playlist on your iPod. Make sure neither Shuffle or Repeat are switched on in the playlist, either of those can prevent you reordering tracks.
If the tracks are out of order in the library try this, I found that it works for me. Right click at the top of any column in your iTunes library and choose **Track Number** from the list. Click at the top of this new column to sort it and after that click on the Album column. If you like you can then click on Artist, it will continue to hold the track order as well. Afterwards anything you import should follow this arrangement Artist>Album>Track Number within Album (you can hide the track number column when you've done if you don't want it cluttering up the view)

  • ITunes mixes up the track order of songs within an album??

My iTunes mixes up the track order, and there is no way to specifically order it by track.  i have even gone and individually marked each song as ie(2 of 12) but it still lists them in a random order.  How can I make the songs fit in their original order?  And none of that "click at the top to order it by artist, album, or time etc," because it doesn't click above track number.
