Smart Album by lens used?

Is it possible to select photos by the lens used on a camera?  I can see this information in the info box (second line down after the model of the camera)
I can't seem to select this line when creating a Smart Folder...
This would be a big help to me.
Many thanks

Hi LarryHN
I have updated my profile!
I think I have found a way of doing what I want...
Creat a Smart Album with Any Text contains (Name of lens), this seems to work, but would be nicer to select from list as I have many lenses!

  • Aperture 2: Smart Album not updating automatically?

I have a smart album based on non-existence of keywords in photos. In other words, I have an album full of images that do not have any of a set of 4 keywords specified. Works great, BUT, when I add keywords to photos from that set, the photos do not disappear from the smart album like they used to.
In fact, to get them to disappear I have to go to the magnifying glass of the smart album uncheck the Keywords checkbox and then recheck it, and only then will it update.
Am I missing something? Is it just a bug or is it a performance issue updating the smart ablum after every change? (I know that was impossibly slow in 1.x, but they seem to have fixed the meta data performance issues in 2.0.)

I figured it out. The Aperture Smart Folder was actually being updated in iPhoto!
    The story...
I recently upgraded to the new commonly shared Aperture \ iPhoto file format and imported all my iPhoto photos into my Aperture library.
Unknown to me, Aperture was saving changes made in Aperture to the old iPhoto file (package)  -- with no notice, advisory, or infornation to this effect!
Mind-numbingly confusing, but once I deduced that my Aperture Library was now kinda fronting for some data stored in iPhoto, I could link to the Smart Folder stored there.
I intend to export the whole mess to an entirely new Aperture Library to be entirely (I hope!) in an Aperture environment.
If you lose information in Aperture, try looking in iPhoto!

  • Nest Smart Albums

Is there anyway (at the library scope) to create a smart album that includes and excludes other smart albums from within the library (including or excluding photos that are members of those other smart albums based on their rules)?
As an example, looking for functionality much like how iTunes can use nested smart playlists.
I'm attempting to do this by defining the smart album's criteria as:
    [x] EXIF > Camera Model > includes > iPhone
[x] Aperture > Album Name > is > Other Smart Album Name (ex: "All Photos, No Flag, No Videos")
...to do determine all "clean and active" photos (not flagged for archive, or video, which is determined by another smart album elsewhere) that were taken with an iPhone.
Am I missing something here or is this not possible? Sorry if I'm not explaining this clearly.

Yea, it doesn't appear to recognize other smart albums to be used in a process of refining "higher-level" smart albums (shaving off photos that are members of other smart albums), like iTunes.
Thanks for your answer. I was really hoping that it was the case, though one can still accomplish the queries and derive the results, but it is much more complex and everything has to change when certain "global", low-level query criteria change.
And you're right, it would be so powerful. I was always impressed by iTunes on that one aspect.

  • Lens info not in Smart Album?

I am having some trouble with duplicate files (no idea how it happened), but even all duplifinder or duplikiller are finding the wrong duplicates. Basically a bunch of images have a duplicated JPEG, and I can always tell which is the duplicate, because it contains no lens information, while the real JPEG and the RAW image have the lens info. I was hoping to filter out the ones without lens info (make 2 smart albums, one with both lens) and then delete the ones that are ot in that smart album, but while iPhoto seems to see that lens info, it seems you can't use it in Smart Albums. All I see is Aperature, Camera Model, Flash, Focal Length, ISO and Shutter Speed. All the images have all that info, but only 2 out of 3 have the actual lens info (EF50mm F/1.8 II) for example.
Does iPhoto just no deal with this Metadata?

    Correct.

  • Smart Album : Inconsistency in the Date Type format used inside Aperture ?

    Hello,
After using Aperture 2.0 for some days, I tried to create a Smart Album using as creation option for the Album the Date + "is in the Range" option which is leaving two blank fields for filling the two dates which are supposed to be the date limits of the pictures that the user wants to select.
My OS X is set to the italian language so our date format is the dd/mm/yy type.
When I tried to insert some dates in our format (dd/mm/yy) the SmartAlbum seemed to not work at all (not selecting any picture, or was coming out with weird results).
After checking carefully that there was no filter set which could prevent the correct visualization of the pictures I had no explanation for the problem.
At first I thought that this specific option was buggy as the other Smartalbum creation options (Keywords etc.) seemed to work properly.
Then I had the idea and I tried to use the english format (mm/dd/yy) for the two dates inside the date range fields and to my surprise everything worked properly.
So basically it seems that Aperture recognises the dates correctly only giving in input the american date format mm/dd/yy.
What is not so noice is that there is no check on the date limit correctness so basically it is possible to really mess up with the dates.
I'm also actually surprised the Aperture doesn't complies with the OS X date type which could seem the logical thing to do or at least is not consistent with the date type management inside the program because for example the pictures Dates are instead correctly listed in the List View of the browser according to the OS X date type (dd/mm/yy).
I was wondering what is happening in countries where the date separator is not the "/" but the "." like typically used in Germany which would add another variable to the software routine which is interpreting the date input fields.....
Maybe this could help other non english users who could have been confused like me on the same issue....
Did you notice the same behaviour ? Am I missing something ?

Smart Albums will search in the Folder/Project that is shown at the top of the search HUD as well as all Folders and Projects "below" in your structure. However, it will not search through any Albums in that structure. Here is an example:
You images are always stored in Projects (yellow icons) and lets say this is how it looks:
    FolderA/ProjectA (this Project stores: ImageA1, ImageA2)
    FolderA/ProjectB (this Project stores: ImageB1, ImageB2)
Let us say that you have two Albums like below but there is an image from ProjectB in AlbumA, which looks like this:
    FolderA/ProjectA/AlbumA (this Album has pointers to: ImageA1, ImageA2, ImageB1)
FolderA/ProjectB/AlbumB (this Album has pointers to: ImageB1, ImageB2)
If you create a Smart Album below ProjectA it will only show ImageA1 and ImageA2 since it only search ProjectA and not AlbumA.
This may be the issue you have.
Are you 100% sure that the Project your Smart Album is pointing at does include the images you are trying to search through. As you see above then it won't find them if they are only in the albums below that project.
Here are a few rules that I follow in order to avoid getting confused over where my images are located: A) Only include images in albums below a project that are stored in that project. B) Create all my smart albums at top library level and if necessary add extra filters like project name.
    Hope you understand.

  • How to find out which keywords were used to create a smart album?

    Hi,
    I actually have 2 questions;
    a) Short of scrolling down my very long list of password on the HUD - is there an elegant way to do it - How to find out which passwords were used to create an existing smart album? It's a recurring challenge for me.\ 'cause I like using smart albums, but once in a while need to check or chane the passwords.
    b) With annoying regularity when I try to get to this forum and choose Aperture, I get the following message - in pink, no less: It appears you're not allowed to view what you requested. You might contact your administrator if you think this is a mistake.
    Any clues?
    Thanks guys,

    Raphael,
that message may occur for four reasons at least:
Most frequently, when you are using an outdated link to a post that no longer exists, for example from an email notofication. Sometimes our community host will remove posts, that are in violation of the terms of use: see:
Apple Support Communities Terms of Use
Or you are using the edit button or a bookmark to an "Edit" window, after the fifteen minutes allowed for editing are up.
Or you want to view a page in a restricted section of the ASC - soem perta are only open for members of level 6 or higher.
Or it is one  of the unexplained problems with the forum software right now.

I really like Kirby's suggestion with the IPTC rule Keyword is. This is very useful for smart albums global to the library.
Frequently a different approach helps for my smart albums. Many of my smart albums are local to projects or folders.  In this case the smart HUD will only show those keywords that have been used for the images in the selection. So if I only have tagged the images with the keywords "birds" and "slideshow", the smart settings HUD will only show these two keywords and the list is very short.
My Keywords HUD, is organized hierarchically; this way I can collapse large sections at once, and it is easier to focus on the keywords needed for a specific task.
I use the search field in HUD a lot, to filter the set of keywords shown.

  • Smart album using keyword not working

I'm creating smart albums using keywords. Today I created two smart albums tagging select photos with key words. One album has worked correctly, the other album is empty, showing only black background. I've confirmed photos are tagged with the one key word, I've confirmed the key word exists in the list. I can't figure out why the smart album is not generating.

Try going to the Q tab and get rid of all the search field by clicking the circle at the right hand side, leaving only the Keywords field, then ensure the rating field is at unrated or better as this field cannot be removed. Allan

  • Using Smart Album conditions

I would like to set up a Smart Album with both an AND and OR condition. The logic would be keyword=Family, Parker OR Hailey AND Date>12/31/08. Is there a way to do this?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
You can search for that particular group of pictures, but as TD said you can't do it using a Smart Album.
To find the photos in your example, go to Preferences > Keywords and set it to +Match ANY keywords when filtering.+ Open the keywords pane in the lower left corner of the window and click the Family, Parker, Hailey keywords. You will get all photos that contain any of those keywords (ie: an OR function). Then go to the View menu, select to Sort by Date. Scroll to your desired date, select your photos (click on the first, Shift-click on the last to select a range), and move them into a regular Album. Finding the date range is the most clumsy part. It may help to +Show Scrolling information+ (Preferences > Appearance). Or switch from the keywords pane to the info pane so that when you select a photo its date is displayed.

  • Using Smart Album to Set Desktop Images

    Aperture 3.2.1 and OS X 10.7.2
I'm trying to set my desktop picture to rotate through an Aperture Smart Album.  Not that it should matter, but the Smart Album is basic -- one star or better, Stack Picks Only.  That Smart Album is easy to set up in Aperture and there it works as expected.  But in the Screen Saver & Desktop module in System Preferences, upon choosing that same album, the browser shows all of the versions in each stack, whether they're the pick or not.  In Aperture, of course, I only get the Pick because I have that option enabled.
Any thoughts on why this is happening?

Smart albums containing images from stacks behave differently when used to create a product (Media browser, MobileMe Gallery, SlideShow, PhotoBook).
The common effect seems to be that the option "stack picks only" determines how the album is viewed in Aperture, but not, what will be included, when you use images that are part of a stack for a product. With Photo Books, Slideshows, and Galleries you will only get the Stack picks included, regardless of the "stack picks only" setting. Only the Media Browser seems to respect the option "stack picks only". when this option is not set, all images in the stacks will be used on the Desktop or in the screensaver, when it is set, only the stackpicks will show.
But in the Screen Saver & Desktop module in System Preferences, upon choosing that same album, the browser shows all of the versions in each stack, whether they're the pick or not.
That behaviour I cannot confirm. I defined several smart albums with stacks, and only the stack picks did show up in the Deskstop and Screensaver preferences, also in the Media Browser in Pages and iWeb, when the option"stack picks only"  was set. But I was careful to quit  both Aperture and "System Preferences", before changing the Screensaver settings.

  • Using Smart Album????

Not sure if Smart Album can do this but I was hoping iPhoto can handle this. I save all my photos and stock photos to one folder on a external hard drive. Can iPhoto remember the folder and automatically update when there is a new photo added to the folder or if I change an exsisting photo? Maybe iPhoto can already do this, not sure????

  • IPhoto 8.1.2 can you create a smart album with only one face

I'm using iPhoto 8.1.2 and have about 23k photos in the library. I have identified 32 key faces, and would now like to create some smart albums that contain only the face or faces that I want and to exclude all the others.  S for example  a smart album that has only my son.
I tried using the doesn't contain this face, but you can only have around 10 filters/critiria in a smart album.
    any suggestions are appriciated

You can't really, because you can't exclude enough of the faces.
I would keyword the preferred images as well, so finding the face and the keyword would find the pics of the person alone.

  • Whats the difference between and Album and a Smart Album

OK, just upgraded.... So, whats the difference between an Album and a Smart Album?
Also, I like to organise my stuff, so if I create a folder for each year, and then a project within that year, why is it that the photos are always in both - and then again if I chose to create an album specific to a project, they are there again.
    So it might look:
              Folder (2012 Equine Photography)
                   Project - Specific Events
Album - Big Barn Dressage May
Does this mean the individual photo is stored 3 times and using 3 times the space?
    Thanks guys!

No. Conceptually the Master only lives lives in the single (time based) Project you import it into. Albums are just collections of pointers that point to  images in various Projects.
"Big Barn Dressage May" could be a Project, but only if it is only one day and a limited number of image files; otherwise an Album. "2012 Equine Photography" should be an album or a Folder of Albums. "Specific Events" could be an Album or a Folder of Albums.
A Project should not be used as a Folder.
From an earlier post of mine:
Folders are indeed flexible organizational tools but IMO often overused. Folders can effectively hide contents from view and therefore require users to remember how folders are nested and what is inside them. Folders were the only way to deal with single-original film, but are IMO limiting to image database thinking.
The way I look at it conceptually:
Aperture is a database (DB), and each image file lives in one Project.
Albums are just collections of Pointers that point to individual image files living in one or more Projects. Since they just contain pointers, albums can be created or deleted at will without affecting image files. Very powerful. And Albums of pointers take up almost zero space, so they are fast and do not make the Library size grow.
Keywords can be applied to every image separately or in batches. Keywords are hugely powerful and largely obviate the need for folders. Not that we should never use folders, just that we should use folders only when useful organizationally - - after first determining that using keywords and albums is not a better approach.
As one example imagine the keyword "flowers."  Every image of a 100,000 images Library that has some flowers in it has the keyword flowers. Then say we want to put flowers in an ad, or as background for a show of some kind, or to print pix for a party, or even just to look for an image for some other reason. We can find every flower image in a 100k-image database in 2 seconds, and in another few seconds create an Album called "Flowers" that points to all of those individual images.
Similarly all family pix can have a keyword "family" and all work pix can have a key word "work." Each individual pic may have any number of keywords. Such pic characteristics (work, family, flowers, etc.) should not be organized via folders.
So by using keywords and albums we can have instant access to every image everywhere, very cool. And keywords and albums essentially take up no space in the database.
Another approach is to use a folder "Family" for family pix, a folder "Flowers" for flowers pix and another folder "Work" for work pix. IMO such folders usage is a very poor approach to using an images database (probably stemming from old paper or film work practices). Note that one cannot put an image with family in a field of flowers at a work picnic in all three folders; but it is instant with keywords.

Sorry but I have no idea what you're asking. What s "look and edit slide show fashion"? Where does a Smart Album fit into that? You know you can move from shot to shot using the arrow keys, right?
