Smart album by year and face1 and/or face2

For a printed album I would like to query my library for pictures from a certain year containing (and) face1 and/or (any) face2. I tried to create a smart album but it seems I can only use 'ALL' or 'ANY' criteria. My specific query actually needs both criteria to be mixed, is this possible? When possible please tell me how.

Yes, it is, if you use a combination of smart albums and the search HUD.
Use the smart album for your primary search criteria
Date:  Capture year is
Use the Search HUD for further filtering: set it to "any" and with "add rule" add your secondary criteria
Face: is  name1
Face: is  name2
The Filter HUD appears, if you click the little magnifying glass beside the search field in split view.
Or, you could select both sets of faces in the faces view, flag them, and then define an smart album with the criteria "Flagged" and "Date:  Capture year is"
I really would like to know, if there is a hidden option like in iTunes , making it possible to define complex smart albums by holding down the option key when adding a rule , anybody knows how?

  • Can't resequence photos in i Photo 11 smart album.. tried drag and drop.. also if I share a smart album to Facebook will it appear as manually sequenced or by date?

I have created a smart album with a date range and 'photo is flagged' and I would like to sequence them manually. The doucmentation I can find says you can open a smart alblum and drag/drop... not me. Can you help?
Also.. if I figure this out and Share the smart album with Facebook, in what sequence will they appear in Facebook?
    Thanks!

You can't sort photos manually in a Smart Album. How Facebook will display the pics is one for Facebook support.

  • IPhoto 9.4.3-keyword "" not working correctly in smart albums

Every May I work on the 5th Grade recognition slideshow (using Keynote) for our 5th grade students.  In iPhoto, I always give photos the checkmark keyword after I've placed that photo so that I know it's been added/used.  I have many smart photo albums with keywords like "5th graders 2012-2013" and others like the checkmark.
None of the smart albums seem to be recognizing and using the checkmark even though it's one of the smart album criteria.  For example, I have a smart album called
"5th grade-already used" which has the criteria Match All:  Keyword is "5th graders-2012-2013" and Keyword is "✔".  However, even after giving some photos the checkmark keyword, this smart album shows up empty.
Similarly, I have another smart album called "5th-Still to use" which has criteria Match All: Keyword is "5th graders-2012-2013" and Keyword is not "✔". The photos that I've placed the checkmark on are STILL showing up here.
These smart albums have always worked before.  Has anyone else noticed issues with the checkmark keyword not working properly?  It has to have happened with an update sometime in the past year.

When I went to open the library using iPhoto Library Manager, it had to upgrade the library to work with this version of iPhoto.
    That's normal.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • New Album from Smart Album makes NEW VERSIONS of all files? Bug?

Got what I think is an oddball bug here, but see if any of you have experienced it.
Making a new album of the contents of a Smart Album with about 600 images resulted in the SBOD, a lot of time and disk activity and the creation of NEW VERSIONS of all the files populating the new album. This, of course, also doubled the number of files in the original Smart Album, since the keywords used are a match. First thinking it might be something I had not read in the manual, I grabbed the book and could not find this behavior listed…..so….my expected result is a new album with the identical contents of the Smart Album selected as the source.
I am creating a presentation for a client whose work is in multiple projects in a ~150GB library. All images are heavily keyworded, so making Smart Albums of specific elements of the work was easy. My intended workflow to get through this mountain of pix was to make Smart Albums of specific elements, then make New Albums from each, manually edit and reorg these albums individually, then combine my edits into a single book file.
Now the structure leading to this problem is as follows:
    1) I created a single “main” folder to store all projects and other elements and hierarchy for this client. Clicking on this folder returns some 8500 images spanning multiple projects…all as expected.
    2) At the top level of this “main” folder, I made about 20 Smart Albums to presort the main elements I wanted to include. I made the first Smart Album by clicking the icon in the top bar. The rest of the smart albums I made by duplicating the previous Smart Album, then changing keyword selection. I would select the new keywords I wanted, then de-select the ones that were from the album I had duplicated. The reason I did it that was for speed, there is little delay in displaying the items that were already searched for, and a significant delay in going from new. Anyway, somewhere in this process, I decided to organize my workflow further, so I created a new folder (calling it Smart Album Selects) at the same level as the Smart Albums, and then dragged the Smart Albums into the new Smart Album Selects folder. Still, no problem.
    3) Later in my session, I went to create another new Smart Album, and this time I did so already in the Smart Album Selects folder. When I opened the HUD to select the keywords, the Keyword area and check box were greyed out!!! Weird, I though….so I simply duplicated an existing Smart Album from my Smart Album Selects folder, opened the HUD, and sure enough, all my keywords were there. I changed the keyword selection, and went on with work. During the day I did this same operation 3 more times, making 4 Smart Albums created the same way.
    4) OK…here is the strange behavior. To make my new custom album from the Smart Album selects, I selected one of the Smart Albums, and clicked on the New Album icon. Got the expected dialog, make with 1 image or all images, selected all images, and instead of a new album popping up moments later, I got the SBOD, and the Activity Monitor said Aperture and my hard disk was cranking away. About 4-5 minutes later, Aperture became responsive again, and had created a new album. However, upon inspection, the album contained NEW VERSIONS of all the images that were in the Smart Album, about 600 files.
    5) I went back and clicked on a different Smart Album in the same spot in the hierarchy…but it was one of the first ones I had created (meaning I built this BEFORE reorganizing into the Smart Album Selects folder). Tried making a new album again, with 1 image, worked fine, popped up instantly. Tried selecting 4 images, same thing, worked fine. Selected All, made album, worked fine.
    6) Went back to the Smart Album I had the problem with, this time selected 4 images, make New Album, and sure enough the New Album had NEW VERSIONS of the pix again…OK, I went back to the top of my folder hierarchy, my “main” folder and made a brand new Smart Album by clicking the icon, and selecting keywords. Made a new album from that, no problem, popped up instantly, no new versions.
    7) I then re-made all my Smart Albums at the top of the folder hierarchy, and they all work fine creating new albums. I got back to the task at hand…hopefully there is enough data here to let the Aperture engineers find this problem…Assuming, that is it is not just me misunderstanding some element in the program.
Sorry for the length, but has anyone else run into this??

Nope, all the images at this point in my workflow have been unstacked, with the non-picked members of the original stacks discarded.
Now that it seems I am not the only one who has witnessed this behavior, what I am really trying to find out, is what is the definitive proper operation of this according to the Aperture group at Apple.
Assuming I have opened a Smart Album with images displayed, and no images are selected.
    Is the correct behavior:
    1) Selecting New Album makes a new Untitled Album (very quickly) with the identical contents of the Smart Album....OR...
    2) Selecting New Album makes a new Untitled Album (slowly) with NEW VERSIONS of the contents of the Smart Album. (Also, depending upon the number of images, typically brings up SBOD and makes Aperture unresponsive until it is complete.)
Now what I expected to happen was #1, as it is what happens when I select New Album when a project is selected. Given Apple's human interface creedo for intuitive operation, I think this is the most intuitive choice, because I can't think of a good reason I would want to double the number of versions of all files in an album, unless I expressly told the app to do this.
Could an Apple guy provide the definitive answer, please...
Thanks in advance for your help.

  • Smart Album not so smart?

Hi. A few months ago I upgraded from iPhoto to aperture. It's all rather confusing but I've been willing to overlook it because of the usefulness of aperture as an advanced photo editor.
Now however all sorts of weird things are showing up. The Smart albums in particular are bizarre. Even the ones that come pre-made in Aperture. In particular the “in the last month” and "in the last week" etc. contain images from all over the map, as it were. Yes, there are images from in the last month, week or what have you—but there are also random images from all sorts of other time frames, projects, albums and folders.
This is particularly annoying because it also seems to have messed up the way photos are synced with my iPhone which (much to my surprise) is one of my favorite things to do on the iPhone: display my photos. Albums on the iPhone contain images often repeated 75 times or other such bizarre problems.
I assume something is corrupt somewhere but I don't know how to “reboot” my libraries without losing precious information.
Can anyone tell me what is wrong with my smart albums and what is wrong with the syncing.
    Many thanks…

As a new Aperture user myself, I had a similar issue. Maybe it's related to yours.
Smart Albums have many options to choose from, and I was a bit confused at the beginning. While setting the Smart Album, you need to be sure you're marking the options you really want/need, and nothing else. For example, my "In the last month" Smart Album showed only one photo, and that wasn't correct.
But the reason was simple: I had written some text in the Search/Filter field (upper right), and obviously that was filtering the not-so-smart results in my folder.
    Hope that helps.

  • Smart Album : Inconsistency in the Date Type format used inside Aperture ?

    Hello,
After using Aperture 2.0 for some days, I tried to create a Smart Album using as creation option for the Album the Date + "is in the Range" option which is leaving two blank fields for filling the two dates which are supposed to be the date limits of the pictures that the user wants to select.
My OS X is set to the italian language so our date format is the dd/mm/yy type.
When I tried to insert some dates in our format (dd/mm/yy) the SmartAlbum seemed to not work at all (not selecting any picture, or was coming out with weird results).
After checking carefully that there was no filter set which could prevent the correct visualization of the pictures I had no explanation for the problem.
At first I thought that this specific option was buggy as the other Smartalbum creation options (Keywords etc.) seemed to work properly.
Then I had the idea and I tried to use the english format (mm/dd/yy) for the two dates inside the date range fields and to my surprise everything worked properly.
So basically it seems that Aperture recognises the dates correctly only giving in input the american date format mm/dd/yy.
What is not so noice is that there is no check on the date limit correctness so basically it is possible to really mess up with the dates.
I'm also actually surprised the Aperture doesn't complies with the OS X date type which could seem the logical thing to do or at least is not consistent with the date type management inside the program because for example the pictures Dates are instead correctly listed in the List View of the browser according to the OS X date type (dd/mm/yy).
I was wondering what is happening in countries where the date separator is not the "/" but the "." like typically used in Germany which would add another variable to the software routine which is interpreting the date input fields.....
Maybe this could help other non english users who could have been confused like me on the same issue....
Did you notice the same behaviour ? Am I missing something ?

Smart Albums will search in the Folder/Project that is shown at the top of the search HUD as well as all Folders and Projects "below" in your structure. However, it will not search through any Albums in that structure. Here is an example:
You images are always stored in Projects (yellow icons) and lets say this is how it looks:
    FolderA/ProjectA (this Project stores: ImageA1, ImageA2)
    FolderA/ProjectB (this Project stores: ImageB1, ImageB2)
Let us say that you have two Albums like below but there is an image from ProjectB in AlbumA, which looks like this:
    FolderA/ProjectA/AlbumA (this Album has pointers to: ImageA1, ImageA2, ImageB1)
FolderA/ProjectB/AlbumB (this Album has pointers to: ImageB1, ImageB2)
If you create a Smart Album below ProjectA it will only show ImageA1 and ImageA2 since it only search ProjectA and not AlbumA.
This may be the issue you have.
Are you 100% sure that the Project your Smart Album is pointing at does include the images you are trying to search through. As you see above then it won't find them if they are only in the albums below that project.
Here are a few rules that I follow in order to avoid getting confused over where my images are located: A) Only include images in albums below a project that are stored in that project. B) Create all my smart albums at top library level and if necessary add extra filters like project name.
    Hope you understand.

  • How can I set up a smart album that looks for keywords?

    Hi everyone,
I'm in the middle of a rethink on my image management and am wanting to setup smart albums that will search for and display images that have a certain keyword. When I create a new smart album to do this, I'm only given the ability to choose to search for rating and calendar criteria; the keywords and import session options are greyed out. My images have keywords assigned, so where do I go from here?
    Thanks,
    Andrew

OK, a step forward. It seems that if I create a smart album it will only look for keywords in the project that it is contained in.
Perhaps someone can help me then: I keep a collection of albums for each person that is featured in a photograph. These albums are stored outside of the projects that the images are stored in so I can have a collection of images that show person X from all the different shoots.
What I want to do now is keyword each image with the person's name (as a keyword) and then have a Smart album that will pick out all of their photos from my entire library, not just a certain project. How can I do this?

  • Can't edit smart album in iPhoto '11

The help files for iPhoto say to select a smart album in the source list and then select it item 'edit smart album' in the file menu.  But there is no such item in the File menu.
When I right-click on the album, the option 'edit smart album' is dimmed. Could it be that this album is not smart??  All my smart albums display the same misbehavior.

I think you may have suggested something that explains all this:  my iPhoto library is a product of a Merge operation by iPhoto Library Manager, which I use to combine photos originally imported on different computers in the family. It is possible that that program makes all smart albums into dumb albums!  I'll look up the documentation.

  • Album vs Slideshow vs Smart Album

    Hi,
I tried to change the order in a Smart Album, but with no luck.
Why can't you change the order in a Smart Album?
To me, slideshows and Albums are roughly the same. Ok, a slideshow can be altered much more for visual presentation. However the basics are the same, in both you can change the order of the pictures.
A Smart Album has the advantage of always showing ALL pictures applying to the Smart Album, however, now I want to change the order.
I don't want to end up having to make a Smart Album to collect all the photo's (when I import new ones, I don't need to drag and drop them to applicable albums) and then making a seperate Album or Slideshow, so I can change the order.
Anybody any advice on how to do this more efficient?
    thanks
    regards

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Why can't you change the order in a Smart Album?
You can. View Menu -> Sort Photos -> by keyword, by date, by title, ascending or descending
You cannot sort them manually, that's a characteristic of any Smart Item.

  • Smart albums based on photo orientation (portrait or landscape)

Is it possible to use orientation of the photo (portrait or landscape) as a criteria for a smart album? I couldn't find a way to do this. I'd like to create a smart album of all landscape photos and use that album as a source for desktop background and screensaver.
    Thanks,
    Zoran

Actually this IS possible in iPhoto '11, just not immediately obvious as to how.  Assuming all your photos are digital and contain metadata relating to the orientation:
Create a new Smart Album with the following setting:
Field: Select the "Any Text" option (second in list)
    Matching: Select "Contains" option
Value: Type "Portrait" into the keyword box
    Click OK and your done.
Substitute Portrait for Landscape if you want a landscape Smart Album.

  • Smart Albums iPhoto Ver. 6

When looking at photo thumbnail view of a smart album have noticed the performance is very poor (slow). Also noticed when paging the thumbnail resolution is not clear (fuzzy). If dbl_click a photo to edit, click done, the screen repaints and the thumbnail is clear...page(scroll) and the thumbnail is fuzzy.
Also, if a photo is selected, can't page past the selected photo.
Also, when creating a album (regular or smart), the pop-up window to name the album comes up but my mac is very slow to respond to typing. I type the name, but it takes several seconds for the characters to appear.
If I create just an Album with the same pics in it, everything seems fine.
I have rebuilt the photo thumbs and the library and have less than 500 pics 95% smaller than 1.5 MB each.
    Can anyone help me?

    Thanks for the quick response....
    I have the following config:
    iMac G5 2.1Ghz PowerPC, 1GB 533 DDR2 SDRAM
I am pretty certain it is not a problem with the config...here is why.
I created a test smart album with one criteria line MyRating is **, everything seemed fine. I added a second criteria Album is <specific album>, everything is fine.
I move the test smart album under a folder (folder also contains the <sepcific album> being used in the second criteria, everything seems fine. I remove the second criteria statement, i get fuzzy images and can't scroll past selected image.
I move the test smart album out of the folder, and the images immediately go from fuzzy to clear and scrolling is fine. I add the second criteria, everything is fine.
I have other smart albums under other folders and they seem to be fine, the difference being one criteria statement looking for specific keywords vs looking inan album in the same folder and having two criteria.
I am going to do some further testing and will post any new info.
    Any thoughts? thanks again.

  • Accessing Smart Albums in finder

    Hi,
I have created a number of Smart Albums in iphoto11, containing photos I wish to use in a digital photo book (created with 3rd party software, not iphoto). Is there any way I can direct the photobook software to the folders containing the smart albums in finder, instead of having to export all the photos before I can use them in the photobook? Appreciate any help

Take a look at iMedia Browser . It can view the albums and smart albums of an iPhoto Library and let you drag photos from it into another application.

  • Smart Albums Not So Smart

I'm trying to set up Smart albums to show my kids and their friends. However, when I organized the photos, sometimes I used Face recognition and other times I just used keywords via hotkey. This was because sometimes it wasn't worth the trouble to add a face box to a photo.
But now that I want to make a Smart Album, I can't make one that shows by Face OR Keyword. It's all or nothing. Is there a work around or something I'm missing?

    Yes you can
    Set it to 'Any'
    Then
    Face is Ben
    Face is Harri
    Keyword is Ben
    Keyword is Harri
and it will any pic is has been "Faced" Ben or Harry, and any photo that is keyworded Ben or Harry
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!

  • Aperture 2: Smart Album not updating automatically?

I have a smart album based on non-existence of keywords in photos. In other words, I have an album full of images that do not have any of a set of 4 keywords specified. Works great, BUT, when I add keywords to photos from that set, the photos do not disappear from the smart album like they used to.
In fact, to get them to disappear I have to go to the magnifying glass of the smart album uncheck the Keywords checkbox and then recheck it, and only then will it update.
Am I missing something? Is it just a bug or is it a performance issue updating the smart ablum after every change? (I know that was impossibly slow in 1.x, but they seem to have fixed the meta data performance issues in 2.0.)

I figured it out. The Aperture Smart Folder was actually being updated in iPhoto!
    The story...
I recently upgraded to the new commonly shared Aperture \ iPhoto file format and imported all my iPhoto photos into my Aperture library.
Unknown to me, Aperture was saving changes made in Aperture to the old iPhoto file (package)  -- with no notice, advisory, or infornation to this effect!
Mind-numbingly confusing, but once I deduced that my Aperture Library was now kinda fronting for some data stored in iPhoto, I could link to the Smart Folder stored there.
I intend to export the whole mess to an entirely new Aperture Library to be entirely (I hope!) in an Aperture environment.
If you lose information in Aperture, try looking in iPhoto!

  • Smart Album errors detecting photos w/ missing faces

I created a smart album (Faces is "unnamed") to find photos with missing faces. I went through and identified each of the photos. As I did this, as soon as I put in the name, many (but not all) disappeared from the album.
However, the Smart Album still has a number of photos, even though there are no unidentified images. I checked each one to see if there were small boxes that I missed, but there weren't.
I deleted the album and set up a new smart album (with the same criteria) and the images still appear in the album.
Is there any way to make my smart album smarter? (remove a plist???)
    Thanks!

.  "Affe".  I have a face named "Sculpture".
I was quite impressed that Aperture's Face Recognition recognizeed the baboon's face.
I have some nice tagged sculptures too.
And some of the more cheeky suggestion by Aperture I named "Funny Face", for example - where does Aperture see a Face here in the bottom part of the picture?
