Smart Album criteria

How do I make "file size" a criteria for a Smart Album?

Dan
Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
You can't make file size a criteria for a Smart Album.
Have you a duplicates problem? Check out Duplicate Annihilator, it may help.

  • When I make a Smart Album, will the photos that match the Smart Album criteria still be present in their original location(s) in the Library after they go into the Smart Album?

When I make a Smart Album in iPhoto, will the photos that meet the criteria of my Smart Album still be present in their original location in my Library after they are "brought into" the Smart Album?

    Yes.
Iphoto works as a Library. Everything is in the Library, and albums (Smart or otherwise) reference the photos from the Library.
Nother way to think about it: An Event is a place. An Album is a list...

  • IPhoto 9.4.3-keyword "" not working correctly in smart albums

Every May I work on the 5th Grade recognition slideshow (using Keynote) for our 5th grade students.  In iPhoto, I always give photos the checkmark keyword after I've placed that photo so that I know it's been added/used.  I have many smart photo albums with keywords like "5th graders 2012-2013" and others like the checkmark.
None of the smart albums seem to be recognizing and using the checkmark even though it's one of the smart album criteria.  For example, I have a smart album called
"5th grade-already used" which has the criteria Match All:  Keyword is "5th graders-2012-2013" and Keyword is "✔".  However, even after giving some photos the checkmark keyword, this smart album shows up empty.
Similarly, I have another smart album called "5th-Still to use" which has criteria Match All: Keyword is "5th graders-2012-2013" and Keyword is not "✔". The photos that I've placed the checkmark on are STILL showing up here.
These smart albums have always worked before.  Has anyone else noticed issues with the checkmark keyword not working properly?  It has to have happened with an update sometime in the past year.

When I went to open the library using iPhoto Library Manager, it had to upgrade the library to work with this version of iPhoto.
    That's normal.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • IPhoto '11 - Create album of photos NOT in any Smart Album

I've searched these forums and couldn't find anything to help me out.  I'm using iPhoto '11, and have converted all my albums to smart albums, primarily using keywords.  In my old scenario, using albums, I could create a "to file" album of photos that are not in any albums.
However, now that I'm using smart albums, there doesn't seem to be a way to identify a way of finding photos that are not in any pre-defined smart album?
Most of my smart albums rely on two or more keywords (ie. date and event), so I can't use the logic "if it has a keyword", that doesn't get photos missing from any smart album.
Any suggestions on manual or automated ways to do this?  It would be nice to have a 'photo not in a smart album' criteria.
    Thanks in advance,
    Jon

No. A Smart Album is really a list of images found in response to a search. So you're looking for images not found by another search, and that's not a criterion for a Smart Album.

  • Instagram smart album

Anybody know how I can create an instagram smart album?  The photo resolutions are all a little different but many are 2448 x 2448.  However, all the photo resolutions are a square (e.g. 648 x 648, or 1028 x 1028).  However, for whatever I can't seem to figure out to even create smart album to find the 2448 x 2448 instagrams, much less any square photo.  Any ideas out there?

You can not - Instagram is not supported by iPhoto and picture dimensions is not a smart album criteria
You can select instagram photos and assign a keyword to them and then make a smart album of that keyword

  • Can't move photos to smart album

I have created a smart album based on face recognition, But I am falling to move new photos to the album by dragging them or by copying them.
Also, I can't see the album name when choosing "albums" from the "add to" button.
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Using iPhoto version 11.
    Thanks,
    Amnon

No idea. What is the smart album criteria? Do the new photos match it?
We can not see you or your computer so you have to supply the details

  • AVI files - Search results different from Smart Album

I've noticed that when I use the iPhoto Search to filter all movies (.AVI files) that all my clips come up (eg. 700 clips in 2007). However, with a Smart Album I have set up to display the .AVI files, the last several weeks of clips seem to be missing (eg. 630 clips from the 2007 album). I've checked all the Smart Album criteria and they are correct. Is this a glitch in iPhoto or is there some other explanation?

    Two possibilities:
    1. There's something different in the later files that don't match the criteria of the search
    or
    2. Spotlight (as it is this that indexes the Library) is not working correctly. Try opening the Spotlight Preference Pane and go to the Privacy section. Drag the Pictures Folder in there, leave it a few moments and then drag it out again. This should force Spotlight to re-index the Folder.

  • Smart album & organizing

If I currently have a smart album titled "kids" and I upload a new event and title that event "kids", I notice that this new album is not automatically added to the contents of the existing smart album. Am I correct, and how are the new events with that set title added to an existing smart album? TY!

The "title" of a smart album has no bearing on what is in it - what is the smart album criteria that you set?
Have you tried a new smart album with "event contains kids"?

  • Smart Album with more than one criteria?

Can a single smart album have more then one criteria?
Every photo of my daughter in my library is tag with her name. I am trying to create a smart album using her name as the keyword that also rated 3 or more stars.
The steps I am taking are as follows:
    1. Set the rating 3 stars or more. (instantly I see all photos in the library that are 3 or more stars)
    2. Set keyword (my daughters name) with the condition, "include only the following" (the album still shows photos from step 1)
    Any ideas?
    Andre
    Thanks,
    Andre

Thank you, been trying to figure this out for hours and such a simple fix.
    Thanks,

  • Creating iPhoto smart album with criteria based on another smart album

When I create Smart Playlists in iTunes, I can set one of the criteria to include/exclude items based on a different smart playlist.
    For example,
    Smart Playlist 1=all songs by artist a, b, c, d, etc.
Smart Playlist 2=all songs where "genre=Holiday"
Smart Playlist 3=all songs that are in "Smart Playlist 1", but are NOT in "Smart Playlist 2".
This same concept doesn't seem to work in iPhoto. While it does seem to work if I'm basing them on regular albums, the "Album is xxxx" criteria option doesn't seem to even list Smart Albums.
Am I missing something or am I not even allowed to use Smart Albums as a criteria for other smart albums?

    You’re not missing anything.

  • Trouble making a smart album with multiple search criteria

    Hello,
I've been using Aperture 3 for a while now but never really created smart albums. Thought I'd give it a go this time around. My filter criteria are:
    a) Select all images that have a rating of 1 star AND
    b) Have a red colour label assigned to them.
The Filter HUD has the following settings:
    a) Any/All pop up menu = All
    b) Source: Project
    c) Rating IS 1 star
    d) Colour Label IS Red
The smart album adds images from the project that match the rating criteria even if they're not labelled "red". On the contrary, if unrated images that have a red label do not end up in the smart album (and correctly so, I must say).
My ultimate objective is to create 2 smart albums based on rating AND label color - 1 star & red goes to the client as proprietary, whereas 1 star & green goes up on Flickr as public.
Am I missing something? Please assist.
I look forward to a quick response.
    Warm regards,
    Faizan

The color label rule is puzzling, and does behave exactly opposite to what you'd expect: It shows the set of labels that are allowed.
You have to uncheck all labels you do not want ansd only keep the red label.
The active labels have a grey border, the others none.
Here is an example of an album with labelled images "red": Notice the grey border around the red button, and borders around the deselected buttons.
    Was that quick enough?
    Cheers

  • Specifying a blank criteria for a smart album

In iPhoto 9.2.1, how do I create a smart album of photos with blank descriptions?

    I managed to use
Description -> does not contain -> and I typed a space.
Strictly speaking this will still find one word descriptions but at least will narrow things down.

  • Question about smart albums - where does selection criteria operate

i maintain several versions of any given image. one for local printing, one for book printing and one for web; each with a different onscreen proofing profile. the versions for a given image are all in the same stack. put an appropriate key word (e.g. for book, for web, etc.) on each version in the hopes that i could create smart albums searching for the key words i wanted. it appears, however, that the search works only on the "pick" image in the stack. am i correct in this assumption?
wouldn't it be better if search brought up the version you were seeking?

wouldn't it be better if search brought up the
    version you were seeking?
Try this: click on the "Ignore Stack Groupings" checkbox in the Query HUD for the Smart Album you're working in.

  • I have uploaded photos from the past and they are grouped by dates.  How do I seperate those photos into their own folder/album so that I can easily identify the contents.  Also, what is the difference between Album, Smart Album and folders?

I have uploaded photos from the past and they are automatically arranged by date.  As a result, there are many events grouped into one library/event/folder/album (not sure of the proper terminology) I'd like to separate them into folders/albums/smart albums so that I can easily identify the contents.  How do I do that and do I delete the originals?

It would be good to take the tutorials and learn iPhoto - these are for the previous version but the concepts are the same and much of the command is the same - and it would be a worthwhile investment of time to take the iphoto tutorials - http://www.apple.com/findouthow/photos/ - they are very helpful and will save you a lot of time and frustration. - also the tutorials in iPhoto Help will be helpful - while iPhoto is easy and intuitive it does have a learning curve and it will save you time and pain if you spend a few minutes learning the basics
as to organization - events are generally time based and are the basic automatic organization - you can merge and split them to make them work better for you but they are not a good way to do detailed organization - best to leave them time based
albums are logical things that contain photos and are just pointers to the photo in the event so they take no extra space and all changes to a photo anywhere are reflected everywhere
Smart albums are the same except they are automatically filled based on the criteria you set when you create them
Folders are containers that you create and a folder can contain albums, smart albums or other folders so they are a big help in organization - like a vacation folder that holds folders for France, USA, China with each of thos folders holding albums of photos from the country

  • Smart Albums not Refreshsing

    Hi,
I've set up Smart Albums based on whether photos in a project have particular keywords i.e. the album shows only photos that do not contain either the keyword "Artwork 1" or the keyword "Artwork 2". When I choose an image and apply the keyword "Artwork 1" with one of the keyword buttons, the photo disappears from the Smart Album, exactly as expected
However if I select several photos, and do the same thing, all the selected photos get the keyword (you can see this from the metadata badge which appears after applying the keyword, and also in the metadata inspector). However only the "primary" disappears. I put primary in quotes because I don't have primary only switched on, but the one with the slightly thicker border is the only way that disappears. The others stay in the Smart Album even though they no longer satisfy the criteria for selection in that album.
The only way I've found to make Aperture refresh the contents of the album is to quit out, and then relaunch. When I come back in the other photos with the keyword in them disappear.
Does anyone else have this issue where Smart Albums do not always refresh automatically? Is there a better way to force a refresh than quitting out?
    Thanks in advance
    David

    Hi Allan,
I don't think so. There are 309 images in the project. I shot maybe 15 new ones last night which appeared instantly in the Smart Album because they didn't have "Artwork 1" or "Artwork 2" keywords applied. Then I selected 3 images, applied the keyword, so it only had to cope with 3 changes.
I don't think of that as excessive numbers, especially since out of the 15 images, 14 disappeared instantly when the keyword was applied, but 1 didn't
