Smart album for non-album photos in library

I haven't found this posted but I'll bet it's a common question.
How do I make a smart album for 'library photos not yet in any album' ?
I have a couple thousand images and it's year-end clean up time!
I haven't mastered the search criteria and am poor at logic anyway.

  • ITunes\Apple TV 2 Not Updating Aperture 3 Smart Album Photos

    Hi,
Even after both updating the Preview photos in the Aperture 3 Smart Album and waiting for several hours, my iTunes photo link to the Apple TV 2  still shows the OLD pictures (and the photo count) from when I first linked the album. The link is off by scores of photos that have since been added.
In attempting to remedy the out-of-date Album link, I have:
    closed all programs,
    restarted the computer,
linked and unlinked the photo album.
The photos on the Apple TV still show old versions of the pix, since revised. I don't know where these are coming from since they have been updated. They must reside in the ATV's memory. I'd like to flush that out and replace with the new versions!
    QUESTIONS:
--> Is there a way to get iTunes to see the updated Smart Album that resides in Aperture 3?
--> Can I force an update of the Smart Album photos to the Apple TV?
Perhaps there is a secret incantation and dance?
    Thanks for your help!
    Don

I figured it out. The Aperture Smart Folder was actually being updated in iPhoto!
    The story...
I recently upgraded to the new commonly shared Aperture \ iPhoto file format and imported all my iPhoto photos into my Aperture library.
Unknown to me, Aperture was saving changes made in Aperture to the old iPhoto file (package)  -- with no notice, advisory, or infornation to this effect!
Mind-numbingly confusing, but once I deduced that my Aperture Library was now kinda fronting for some data stored in iPhoto, I could link to the Smart Folder stored there.
I intend to export the whole mess to an entirely new Aperture Library to be entirely (I hope!) in an Aperture environment.
If you lose information in Aperture, try looking in iPhoto!

  • How to find original iPhoto Album photos in Library (by Album content)

I have run out of Macbook space (OSX 10.7.5) and want to put all my photos on an external hard drive and share them between MacBook and iMac (no cloud please).  I want to do this by "Album" name because that's how they are organized.  I don't get the "events" thing in iPhoto, nor am I interested in the "Faces" stuff.  Just simple file access is all I want.
QUESTION 1:  How can I find the original photos after exporting by album?  I want to delete these permanently from the Library -- from my MAC.
QUESTION 2:  Is there a smarter way to get these photos onto my external drive than using "export?"  And, is there a way to re-size a batch of files as opposed to one by one?  I made all my camera photos the largest size possible, one reason I've run out of disk space.  But to individually re-size would be impossible.
Note:  I'm in a mess with photos.  Have 20K on MacBook and about 25K on my iMac.  There are 8 different iPhoto Libraries on my iMac, created by me in an effort to organize but I didn't know what I was doing and they are a total mess.  My goal is to get them all into this hard drive from both computers then start all over again.  But they need to be by album.  I'm not an "Event" person -- doesn't make sense to me, so I've put all my photos in albums.  When I start over I may not use iPhoto.  Thinking of going back to Windows actually.

Sorry I'm terrible at explaining and even using my macbook haha. Let me try again. I imported some photos that I wanted to group together into an album. I forgot to create the album before importing a new set of photos which then took the place of the previous ones in the "last import" album. Is there anywhere or any way I can easily find the selection of photos I forgot to put into an album together without having to select them one by one from the "all photos" section? These would be the only pictures in my Photos application that haven't been organized into an album yet if that helps; however, these photos were not taken on the same date.

  • Can I auto-delete Album photos from Library once Album itself is deleted ? (iPhoto)

Tell me I've missed something really simple, please !
I've just spent 3 hours carefully selecting 250 single photos dotted around my entire iPhoto Library (8,000 pics)
I've put them in an Album ready to export.
After exporting this Album, I will want to delete the Album - and, crucially, all the originals from my Library - surely I don't have to spend another 3 hours sifting through the 8,000-strong Library again to relocate each of the 250 ?  Isn't there some one-click option, having exported the Album, and now ready to delete the Album, like, e.g. Delete Originals from Library After Deleting this Album ??   (I understand I can't only delete the Album to get rid of these pics completely, cos the originals will stay hidden and dispersed about the Library)
    Thank you for any help

  • Use flash photo to make colour adjustment for non daylight photo

    Hi,
I have taken photos using existing interior room light of a scale model figure then also taken a photo with flash. I wish to tell photoshop to alter the existing light photo to match the colour balance of the flash shot by clicking on part of the flash picture which would give a good reference point (no flash highlight etc) and having that get used to auto adjust the non flash shot.
    How is this done ?
Pics are in raw mode Canon 20D.
This for me would be better than trying to find a neutral part of the scene and saying this is neutral using the pipette neutral tool, as that sometimes doesnt quite give me the true scene.
I would then like that colour adjustment to be used/available to the other shots taken using that existing light.
I somehow store that adjustment and apply it to any other shots with the same exposure and existing light used.
How do I do that ?
    Cheers

  • IPhoto for iPad duplicates photos in library photos web syncronizing ... How avoid and delete duplicates photos ?

Can someone help ? My Photos Library is so huge with 4-5 copies of the same photo ......

Basically you need the photos available a tthe path the they had when they were imported, check the option to copy imported items to the iPhoto library and then you use the iplm rebuild -
Photo Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  can rebuild a referenced library into a managed library but only if the original photos are accessable via the path in iPhoto
Or if you have iPhoto '11 9.4.2 and Aperture 3.3 or newer you can use Aperture to reconnect the photos

  • Layering with smart objects for architectural interior photos in PS

    Help…
I was wondering if anyone has had experience of working on professional architectural photographs in PS?
I am interested in using and learning how to use the layering technique many architectural photographers use to produce different exposures of an interior in one image.
Many pros prefer this method I’m told, as it offers more control and flexibility than using HDR.
One photographer I spoke to said:
“I also bracket different exposures and use under and/or over exposures for extreme areas that need adjustment. Smart objects simplify things by using just one RAW file whenever in range”.
I don’t fully understand this; anyone got any links to websites etc I can learn more about this method?
    Thanks..

    Thanks Donald and Silkrooster,
Yes I am using multi exposures (RAW) with a tripod around 6-8 of them (stop apart, from highlights to shadows), as I was just going to use a HDR processor like Photomatrix or PS, however I using PS CS5 the other day the images look too fake, even when I bring the values down.
I need high reality & definition.
What I'm looking for is a great exposure range in my images, which I know cannot be achieved using just one RAW file.
The photographer I quoted at the start is a successful architectural photographer who uses multi RAW images in layers as smart objects (I guess so he can make adjustments back & forth without damaging the image quality?) and that he too found HDR too fake for his high end customers. He said it takes him a long time, I suppose he is creating layer masks it high detail of the section he wants the exposure to be different. This was all I could get out of him on his blog!
I’m familiar with this old method of laying as I used to do this many years ago using scanned slide film of different exposures in PS2, however it took a really long time (due to big files and slow computers) and I used to literately erase the layer above in parts I wanted the other exposure to come through. These offend used to go wrong and also crash the computer.
However now I understand people are using layer masks and RAW images (different exposures) as layers to have more control over the different exposures than if the different PSD files were imported.
I don’t know how you would use a RAW layer to adjust and process, colour balance etc?
My workflow at the moment is to produce the best image I can from a RAW image using Lightroom or Aperture 3, and import the different images as different PSD layers.
I cannot believe no one has come out with layering software or a plug-in to help this process with masks, exposure, aligning images etc?
Or have they but I don’t know about it yet??

  • Can I batch resize all to 300px x 300px with some kind of white background for non square photos?

I want to resize all to 300 x 300 but I don't want to ruin the photo integrity but I want them to be exactly 300 x 300 for example if I have an image that is 500 x 400 I don't want it to be resized to 300 x 200 I would like it resized to 300 x 300 with a white bar frame

The answer is yes but doing that type of resize will distort your images and it can be done with a simple action.  Image size Resample checked constrain unchecked width and height set to 300.  With a script you could resize your images so that its shortest side is 300px then center crop the result to 300px by 300px you will loose some image pixels off the sides or the top and bottom. You can also resize the image and add canvas with an Action or script. The action would use menu File>Automate>Fit image (wihch is a script plugin) and set width and height to hight to 300.  This may resize the image to something like 300x200 so you follow the fit image step with Canvas size set width and height to 300px

  • IPhoto 11 - Photos From Option-Selected Smart Albums Not Included in Slideshow

Running iPhoto 11 on an Spring 2013 iMac (new thin bezel; hard state drive).  I have multiple "smart" albums in my library, based upon keywords.  When I try to select a subset of those smart albums for inclusion in a slideshow (i.e. clicking the play button at the bottom of the iPhoto interface), iPhoto only includes the photos I select from the given albums about 50% of the time.
For example, I may select albums 1, 3 and 5 for the slideshow, out of 10 albums total.  iPhoto will only include photos from albums 1 and 5 in the working "selection" of photos, despite my explicit inclusion of the photos from album 3 in what I selected.
This is such a terrible and obviously preventable bug I am pretty furious.
    <Edited by Host>

    Try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
or with Lion and Mt. Lion from the User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/
    Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE 1: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
NOTE 2:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
If there's no improvement as a test launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and test to see if the same problem persists. Does it?

  • Smart Album  to show pics with no faces, & any photos that iPhoto no faceID

Hi, I've just started to use iPhoto 09, after a long long time getting to know my iMac, and organising my iTunes library...
I want a smart album to show photos which have no faces, but also to have photos which iPhoto has not picked up that a photo needs a "face ID" on, what I mean is, if a person is turned away to to the side, iPhoto might not pick up that it needs to be a "face" and so wont show up in the normal smart album Photo>is>unnamed
if anyone can help, would be great, I'm busy slowly importing my photos, and what to do this one step at a time
    cheers

A smart album with the criteria "Face is unnamed" will find any photo with an unnamed face on it. It can be either one with a named face or two but at least one unnamed face or a photo with no faces named.
There is workaround to get what you want.
1 - add a keyword, face, to any photo you name a face in.
2 - create a smart album with the criteria "Keyword is not face".
This will identify any photo with no face at all. If you've not added any other keywords to photos you can create the smart album above and then sort by keyword. Those with both a face and unnamed face will have the keyword face and can be sorted to the top or bottom of the list.

  • Smart Album "Managed" doesn't behave as expected

    Hello,
I have a smart album in my library that I use to track managed files ("file status = managed"). My expectation is to click on this, it shows me the files under library management, I select them all and then Relocate Masters to a folder in the file system.
This works well with one exception. Lets say I have a relocated image and I edit this in the external (PS) editor. When I come back to Aperture, I have 2 files in a single stack - the master which is relocated and the new version which is not.
When I select my Smart Album, I would expect to see the new version that was just created. However, it doesn't appear. If I go back to the 2 images and split them out of the stack then go back to the smart album, the version IS shown.
I clearly don't want to split all my stacks or micro-manage every new version I create. Is this standard behavior? Is there another way for me to achieve this?
    Thanks

This might work. Click the magnifying glass to the right of your smart album name. This will bring up the dialog box to set the parameters of the smart album. At the bottom left corner, check the box for "Ignore Stack Groupings". This should allow the smart album to search through all of the stacked photos and not just the images on top of the stacks.

  • Smart Album : Inconsistency in the Date Type format used inside Aperture ?

    Hello,
After using Aperture 2.0 for some days, I tried to create a Smart Album using as creation option for the Album the Date + "is in the Range" option which is leaving two blank fields for filling the two dates which are supposed to be the date limits of the pictures that the user wants to select.
My OS X is set to the italian language so our date format is the dd/mm/yy type.
When I tried to insert some dates in our format (dd/mm/yy) the SmartAlbum seemed to not work at all (not selecting any picture, or was coming out with weird results).
After checking carefully that there was no filter set which could prevent the correct visualization of the pictures I had no explanation for the problem.
At first I thought that this specific option was buggy as the other Smartalbum creation options (Keywords etc.) seemed to work properly.
Then I had the idea and I tried to use the english format (mm/dd/yy) for the two dates inside the date range fields and to my surprise everything worked properly.
So basically it seems that Aperture recognises the dates correctly only giving in input the american date format mm/dd/yy.
What is not so noice is that there is no check on the date limit correctness so basically it is possible to really mess up with the dates.
I'm also actually surprised the Aperture doesn't complies with the OS X date type which could seem the logical thing to do or at least is not consistent with the date type management inside the program because for example the pictures Dates are instead correctly listed in the List View of the browser according to the OS X date type (dd/mm/yy).
I was wondering what is happening in countries where the date separator is not the "/" but the "." like typically used in Germany which would add another variable to the software routine which is interpreting the date input fields.....
Maybe this could help other non english users who could have been confused like me on the same issue....
Did you notice the same behaviour ? Am I missing something ?
    Uby

Smart Albums will search in the Folder/Project that is shown at the top of the search HUD as well as all Folders and Projects "below" in your structure. However, it will not search through any Albums in that structure. Here is an example:
You images are always stored in Projects (yellow icons) and lets say this is how it looks:
    FolderA/ProjectA (this Project stores: ImageA1, ImageA2)
    FolderA/ProjectB (this Project stores: ImageB1, ImageB2)
Let us say that you have two Albums like below but there is an image from ProjectB in AlbumA, which looks like this:
    FolderA/ProjectA/AlbumA (this Album has pointers to: ImageA1, ImageA2, ImageB1)
FolderA/ProjectB/AlbumB (this Album has pointers to: ImageB1, ImageB2)
If you create a Smart Album below ProjectA it will only show ImageA1 and ImageA2 since it only search ProjectA and not AlbumA.
This may be the issue you have.
Are you 100% sure that the Project your Smart Album is pointing at does include the images you are trying to search through. As you see above then it won't find them if they are only in the albums below that project.
Here are a few rules that I follow in order to avoid getting confused over where my images are located: A) Only include images in albums below a project that are stored in that project. B) Create all my smart albums at top library level and if necessary add extra filters like project name.
    Hope you understand.

  • Smart Album to identify pics without Place Assigned

Anyone know how to set up a smart album to show photos with no place assigned? I've tried setting up "is" "blank" or "is" "photo place"... nothing seems to work. I have another album set up to show Unassigned Faces and it makes it much easier to manage your photo album. Thanks for any ideas!

I see "Place" and you can do: is, is not, starts with, contains, does not contain, and ends with. I've tried is blank... contains blank... and a bunch of other things but I can't seem to get it to work. I'm sure it's something quite easy that I'm missing.
new smart album "Photo is not GPS tagged"
1 - file menu ==> new smart album
    2 - Photo
    3 - Is Not
    4 - GPS tagged
I did not mention "place" anywhere

  • Smart Album/File organization anomaly...

Don't know if this is a bug or is to be expected...I wanted to set up a smart album to track a certain keyword, and have this album organized in a (blue) folder called "Projects"...target images are from many other Projects in the library. In the "Projects Folder", there are other Projects (shoots) from specific clients, but this album is for a theme across Projects...
Anyway, when I tried to add the smart album by highlighting the "Projects Folder", Ap associated the smart album with the "nearest" real Project (and limited the smart search criteria to items associated with the project)...I had to set the smart album up under "Library" and after it was setup, MOVE it to the "Projects Folder"...not exactly intuitive, but understandable, and it works FINE once its there...
    FYI.
    cheers,

  • Deleting photos from main library while in Smart Album.

anyone know of a key sequence to delete a photo from the library when viewing the photo in a smart album?
I have over 1700 photos. Sometimes I want to delete all photos within a smart album but you can not do that by just selecting delete; that only deletes it from the album and not the library. as of right now the easies way I have found to do this is to perform a batch change and rename all files the same name, then perform a search within the main library for those files and then delete them. I refuse to think Apple didn't think about creating a "delete from main library" shortcut.

Option Command Delete works for Smart albums also. At least that is what it says in the iPhoto Help/iPhoto keyboard shortcuts in the menu bar.
