Smart Album help - pictures without Keywords

How can I create a Smart Album for pictures that don't have a Keyword attached to them? I'm trying to put Keywords to all my pictures and would like to be able to use a Smart Album to help me get through this project.
Thanks.
Chip

Thanks. I had it on "contains" and there isn't a pulldown menu for that. Never even thought to change it to the other choices to see what that offered.

Smart Album help, please! While converting old slides to digital, I am importing to iPhoto in small batches. I have created a "smart album" for the converted slides expecting successive imports would automatically install into that "converted slides" titled smart album. It's not happening. ? ? ? I titled the 2nd imported batch "converted slides". This 2nd import is sitting in "Last Roll" rather than automatically moving to the smart album. How do I move this 2nd batch of 242 photos from "Last Roll" into its designated album? I tried "drag n drop" the whole roll, perusing iPhoto help menu, to no avail. HELP!

On further review of the iPhoto Help menu, it seems that an "Album" is much more flexible than the smart album. Can I change a smart album into a regular album? Or, I've created a "folder" for the smart album. Now, if I "Trash" the smart album, will the folder of slides remain? My right shoulder aches from too many hours on this project, that now I'm afraid to try anything for fear of loosing all that work. SHEEESH.

  • How can I set up a smart album that looks for keywords?

    Hi everyone,
I'm in the middle of a rethink on my image management and am wanting to setup smart albums that will search for and display images that have a certain keyword. When I create a new smart album to do this, I'm only given the ability to choose to search for rating and calendar criteria; the keywords and import session options are greyed out. My images have keywords assigned, so where do I go from here?
    Thanks,
    Andrew

OK, a step forward. It seems that if I create a smart album it will only look for keywords in the project that it is contained in.
Perhaps someone can help me then: I keep a collection of albums for each person that is featured in a photograph. These albums are stored outside of the projects that the images are stored in so I can have a collection of images that show person X from all the different shoots.
What I want to do now is keyword each image with the person's name (as a keyword) and then have a Smart album that will pick out all of their photos from my entire library, not just a certain project. How can I do this?

  • Iphoto smart album help

Is it possible to create a smart album that will find all photos of two specific people and no one else? I am hoping to create an album that contains only photos of my two children, together, with no other people… not sure how to set it up. Thanks.

Not really - you can make one for all rules with photo contains each of the the two people and additional rules photos does not contain each of the other names - but even then it will not eliminate photos with people who have not been identified
Suggest to Apple - iPhoto menu ==> provide iPhoto feedback - maybe it will influence Photo next year

  • Smart collection - stacked pictures & parent keywords

    Hi everyone!
I'm playing around with smart collections and am wondering it there is a possibility
    - to filter for stacked photos and / or the first (front) picture of a photo stack...
    - to filter for a parent keyword that is not attributed itself - it should show all the pictures with the respective child keywords (but not pictures with other keywords that might contain part of the parent keyword); or more simply put - filter just the way that would happen when you press the -> arrow next to a keyword in the keyword browser
    Thanks for any inputs.

Not possible with Lr's built in smart collections options, but there may be third party plug-in around that support what you're asking for. Try a search on Adobe Lightroom Exchange http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/exchange/index.cfm?event=productHome&exc=25

  • Cannot update or repopulate keyword field in smart album query HUD

So I want to make a new smart album based on a new keyword I just entered into my keyword library.
However, when I create the new smart album, and then check the key words box to select keyword criteria, I only get an old list of keywords to choose from. The new key word is not there. And there are old key words there that I've since deleted. I've tried restarting aperture and my computer several times.
I cannot make a smart album with one new keyword I've created because It won't show up in the query HUD.
    Any ideas?
    Dan

How did you enter it in your keyword library?
You have to keyword something before it will show up in the filter.
This shows how to make any of the keywords visible:

  • Smart Albums with Keywords

I have a couple Smart Albums whose criteria include "keyword contains ...." One of these smart albums reveals the photos separated by the Event that contains them and the other shows the photos all together not separated at all. I'm not sure how I did this. So, two questions:
1.) How can I toggle between the two view options described above?
2.) How can I create a third viewing option that separates the photos by keyword? (I.e. A smart album with criteria to include any of multiple keywords and then presents the photos separated by their respective keywords)
    Thank you!

"1.) How can I toggle between the two view options described above?
View Menu -> Event Titles - Check and uncheck this as required."
I found "Event Titles" but it is grayed out for some reason. It is grayed out when I am in Smart Albums, regular Albums and Events but not when I am in Photos. It seems that it should toggle for Smart Albums though, considering I have both Smart Albums that separate photos by events and Smart Albums that don't. I'm quite computer savvy, but this one has amazingly stumped me. What do you advise?
    Thank you!

  • Smart Album  to show pics with no faces, & any photos that iPhoto no faceID

Hi, I've just started to use iPhoto 09, after a long long time getting to know my iMac, and organising my iTunes library...
I want a smart album to show photos which have no faces, but also to have photos which iPhoto has not picked up that a photo needs a "face ID" on, what I mean is, if a person is turned away to to the side, iPhoto might not pick up that it needs to be a "face" and so wont show up in the normal smart album Photo>is>unnamed
if anyone can help, would be great, I'm busy slowly importing my photos, and what to do this one step at a time
    cheers

A smart album with the criteria "Face is unnamed" will find any photo with an unnamed face on it. It can be either one with a named face or two but at least one unnamed face or a photo with no faces named.
There is workaround to get what you want.
1 - add a keyword, face, to any photo you name a face in.
2 - create a smart album with the criteria "Keyword is not face".
This will identify any photo with no face at all. If you've not added any other keywords to photos you can create the smart album above and then sort by keyword. Those with both a face and unnamed face will have the keyword face and can be sorted to the top or bottom of the list.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. It seem to work for me so try deleting that smart album and create a new one. See if that will work. Also deleting the iPhoto cache folder from your User/Library/Caches folder might help.
Also using all caps is difficult to read and is tantamount to shouting in the forums. It's much easier to read when in lower case. Thanks.

  • Making Details:Duplicate from Smart Album?  Duplicate and Crop in one step?

I need to create details -- blown-up portions -- of several hundred photos. Many of the photos have three areas from which I would like to create details. I want to retain the originals as originals. I want the details to remain in whatever event the original is in. It would be helpful to have the details not inherit the keywords of the original. What is the best way to do this in iPhoto?
Here are some of the problems I've encountered.
    - My originals are in Events. I have tagged the photos from which I want to create details with various keywords. I have Smart Albums set up for keywords. Is there any way to duplicate a photo from within a Smart Album ("Duplicate" is grayed out)?
    - - Is there any way to select a photo in a Smart Album and then go to Events or Photos view and have that photo selected?
    - Once I have the photo selected, I want to quickly select the area of the detail and create a duplicate and crop it to the selected area. Is there an easy way to do this?
    - - Pressing "c" in Edit mode brings up the crop mode (as long as Keywords aren't show and you don't have a keyword assigned to "c") _with an area of the photo already selected. Is there any way to either not have an area initially selected or to with one key press get rid of the "pre-selection"?
    - Sometimes I don't know until I look at the photo that I want details. Ideally I'd like to be able to, in Edit view, select an area of the photo with the mouse cursor, and with one key-press duplicate the photo and crop it to the area selected.
I am willing to consider using an external editor.
    Thanks!

No. However, if you search the Library on the Keyword (using the Search Box) you'll be able to duplicate.
    - - Is there any way to select a photo in a Smart Album and then go to Events or Photos view and have that photo selected?
No. Bu again, using the Search Box, with 'Event Titles' selected in the View Menu will do something similar.
    - Once I have the photo selected, I want to quickly select the area of the detail and create a duplicate and crop it to the selected area. Is there an easy way to do this?
Define'Quick'. Here's the quickest way I can find: Crop the pic to the detail. Duplicate the cropped pic and the Revert to Original on the first one. Result: your original pic plus a cropped version. However: you will lose +all previous edits+ on the pic doing this.
    - - Pressing "c" in Edit mode brings up the crop mode (as long as Keywords aren't show and you don't have a keyword assigned to "c") _with an area of the photo already selected. Is there any way to either not have an area initially selected or to with one key press get rid of the "pre-selection"?
    No and no.
    - Sometimes I don't know until I look at the photo that I want details. Ideally I'd like to be able to, in Edit view, select an area of the photo with the mouse cursor, and with one key-press duplicate the photo and crop it to the area selected.
Isn't that the same question as the 'Quick' one above?
I am willing to consider using an external editor.
What's nor clear from your questions is the actual detail required. Are these several hundred pics all the same dimensions, with the detail in the same location each time? If so, you could probably create a Photoshop action to automate the process for you. But if you don't have photoshop or have never created an Action then you might well be faster to do the job by hand.

  • Smart Albums

I'm having a problem with smart albums...When i try to create a smart album the Keyword option is grayed out, meaning i can't create a new smart album based on the keywords! Anyone know what's the problem?

This usually means that there are no images with keywords in the Project or Folder containing the Smart Album.

  • Creating smart album based on multiple albums

    Hi,
I would like to create a smart album based on the ratings of the photo and based on more than 1 album. Is this possible? because when i do try to base the condition on more than 1 album, no photos in my smart album show up.
    Thank you.

    crouton800:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. No, that won't work A smart album can only search one album to display a specific rating photo in that album. That is, the criteria would be Album is A and rating is 5 star with the "all" selected.
That's because the All or Any criteria prevent you from trying to find only the 5 star photos in Album A and B. If you use the "all" criteria you'll get no hits and if you use the "any" criteria you'll get all of the photos in both A and B.
Also you can't have a smart folder, only a smart album.
What you need is for the following criteria to be invoked:
Album is A and rating is 5
    and
Album is B and rating is 5
and that can't be done with the present application.
You can get around this limitation by assigning a unique keyword to every photo in Album A, B and future albums in that folder. Then do a a smart album with the criteria:
    Keyword is "xxxx"
    Rating is 5 star
    and have the "All" selected.

Upon updating to the new Photos program, all the previous "My Ratings" (1-5 stars) for photos have been removed. Why?  My "Smart Albums" using the "My Ratings", i.e. photos with a 5 star rating within the past year, have been virtually destroyed in the update.  The updates "modified" Smart
Album deleted the "My Ratings" parameter, retained the Date parameter so now Smart Album includes every photo within the date range parameter.  Where are the "My Ratings" capabilities ?  It appears they have been removed.  If so, why ?

Photos doesn't have true star ratings.
However, when photos are migrated from iPhoto or Aperture to Photos, they will have keywords assigned, like "1 star" or "5 stars". You can create smart albums based on these keywords.
You can also assign keyboard shortcuts so if you're in the keyword pane and type 1, it will assign the "1 star" keyword.

  • How do I create a smart album that contains all pictures with no keywords?

    Hi,
I have many pictures which currently don't have any keywords at all. Now I want to tag these pictures with keywords. How can I create a smart album for those pictures without any keywords? So that I can then work just on these pictures...
Note that I don't want to find pictures that don't have a specific keyword. I want to find all those pictures which have none keyword at all.
    Thanks,
    Rainer

Well, there's a way but it's not great...
Start with a smart album at whatever level you want to keyword everything under. Set to search where "rating is greater than or equal to unrated".
Select all images, and apply a keyword like "NeedsKeyword". Yes, even the one with keywords already.
Now change the smart folder - use the "+" menu on the upper right corner of the query box to add an "IPTC" search. In that row use the dropdown by IPTC to find "keywords", then set the one next to it to "is", then type "NeedsKeyword" (or whatever you used) into the text box. Now go up to the top of the query box and change the "Match" dropdown to be "all" instead of "Any".
What we've done here is find all images where the only keyword is "NeedsKeyword", all the ones you've done with keywords already will not appear.
Now, copy these images into an Album (not smart album) for tagging - this is because as soon as you tag an image it will vanish and you may wish to apply more than one tags).
After you are done tagging, you want to remove the tag - this is trickier than you might think, as you need to remove it from images tagged before in addition to the images in the Album you just made.
First, change your smart folder to once again find all images by unchecking the IPTC keyword search. Now you'll see all images - but you're not done yet! You cannot batch undo a keyword in a smart folder, even though you can batch add. Select all of the images and drag into the Album you were using to keyword. Inside an Album the keyword metadata inspector shows only common keywords, NeedsKeyword should be one of them - remove it and it will be gone, and all your images tagged. Now you can remove the Album and the Smart Album you created.
Harder than it needs to be, I'd say - I've submitted feedback you need some way to search for untagged images. Heck, it may already be in 1.1! Or Joe might know of an easier way that has eluded me.
    Good luck!
