Smart album in iPhoto 11

When I click the "create" button, the options include "album" but not "smart album". How can I create a smart album?

I don't believe that this is possible right now.

  • Smart Albums in iPhoto

In iTunes, I can set up a smart playlist which constantly updates 8 hours of random music from my library, using "last played is not in the last 6 months" - this way I know I won't get any repeats too quickly.
I would like to set up a smart album in iPhoto (or in the Finder, for that matter) that contains 200 random images from my iPhoto library, and switches them out after they are viewed.
I have been searching for a way to do this for about a week now, with no success.
    Is this possible?

  • Can't edit smart album in iPhoto '11

The help files for iPhoto say to select a smart album in the source list and then select it item 'edit smart album' in the file menu.  But there is no such item in the File menu.
When I right-click on the album, the option 'edit smart album' is dimmed. Could it be that this album is not smart??  All my smart albums display the same misbehavior.

I think you may have suggested something that explains all this:  my iPhoto library is a product of a Merge operation by iPhoto Library Manager, which I use to combine photos originally imported on different computers in the family. It is possible that that program makes all smart albums into dumb albums!  I'll look up the documentation.

  • Problem with Smart Albums in iPhoto 5

I have created a number of Smart Albums using 2 criteria: a selected date range and that the keyword is not "icons". Every time I close iPhoto, the 2nd criteria seems to get reversed so that the only photos in the album are the ones that DO have the keyword "icons". However, when I go to Edit Smart Album, it does not appear that the criteria have been changed. Then I save the settings and the albums appear as I want them - until I close iPhoto and the problem reoccurs. Has anyone else experienced a bug like this? Is there any way to fix it?

I see all my smart albums in iTunes when I sync the iPad. But sometimes iTunes is confused about the current library. I have several iPhoto and Aperture Libryries, and I noticed that iTunes sometimes still tries to sync the previously opened library, not the most recently opened one. To be able to tell which library iTunes is showing, I name one of the projects exactly like the library. So I can tell easily, if iTunes is syncing an older copy of the library.
For example a small test library named "iPhoto Library" containing one smart album:

  • Screensaver not showing all photos in an iPhoto smart album

Got a weird problem here, done some searching around but can't find a fix.
I have created a smart album in iPhoto 11. This correctly displays 95 photos across multiple events, based on a string match to the event name.
However, if I use this smart album for a desktop or screensaver, it only displays 8 photos, all from the oldest event that is in the smart folder.
Anyone have an idea how I can fix this?

Is Aperture the only app being affected? How does your desktop look? Have you rebooted your systems since this started happening? What is your display setting in System Preferences?
If it's only affecting Aperture its most likely the plist file ~/Library/Preference/com.apple.Aperture.plist.
You should move that to the desktop and restart Aperture. Not sure what file you deleted but moving the plist file won't remove any images from the library. Also take a look at the rest o the troubleshooting tips in [Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3805]

  • IPhoto Smart Album works with Desktop, fails with Screen Saver

I've created a Smart Album in iPhoto, with my 5-star photos in it, calling it "My Favorites". In iPhoto, there are 116 photos right now. When I go to my Desktop settings, I see all the photos in "My Favorites".
When I go to Screen Saver, I get 5 of the photos in that Smart Album. I've got other Smart Albums, some with thousands in them, and they seem to display just fine.
I've deleted and re-created "My Favorites", even using a different name. I still get the same results.
Any ideas why Desktop would work, but Screen Saver won't, with the exact same Smart Album? How can I troubleshoot this?

As the Desktop section is working, I would guess the problem is with the ScreenSaver. Try trash the ScreenSaver cache and see if that helps.
    Thanks.
The only cache I found was ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.ScreenSaver.Engine/Cache.db. Removing that had no effect; might this have been the wrong one, and if so, where is the right one?

  • Most of Smart Albums not imported from iPhoto

  • Changing file name in a smart album?

I have created several smart albums in iphoto 6, i am also in the process if updating my photos in iphoto by renaming them. My smart albums use the file name for their search criteria. But i have noticed several of my photos would be better in a different smart album i created, so i change their file names to something more relevent, but they stay in this original smart album, i would have thought they would automatically be romoved from this smart album???

    bege:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. If you change a photos title in a smart album or anywhere else its name should change in every instance it is in the library. Users have reported smart albums not updating unless the quit and relaunch iPhoto. Give that a try and see if the name is the same everywhere. It should. I don't remember what the fix was for that situation but you might do some searching for "smart album not updating" or something like that to see what you find.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB file backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Importing smart album to iphone via itunes

    Hi,
I created a smart album in iPhoto of all my phone photos in the last 2 years. I now want to import this to my iPhone using iTunes. In iPhoto, that album contains about 950 photos, but when I go to photos in iTunes and select the smart album i created, the number is much lower: about 450.. I tried importing it anyway but most of the pictures are missing in the phone.
only workaround I've found is deleting all the pictures in the iPhoto library and re adding them, but surely this can't be the solution, as i often sync my phone and i don't want to be doing this all the time.
    any clues?
    thank you
    damiano

There may be a problem with the iPod Photo Cache folder in your iPhoto Library. If your library contains such a folder, quit iPhoto and iTunes and delete the  iPod Photo Cache folder as described in this document:
iTunes: Understanding the iPod Photo Cache folder http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1314
If there is no  iPod Photo Cache, or the problem persists, repair your iPhoto Library with the First Aid Tools.
Launch iPhoto with the key combination⌥⌘  (alt/option-command) held down.
Keep holding down both the keys, until the "Library First Aid" panel opens.
Select first "Repair permissions" from the panel and let iPhoto repair the permissions.
Repeat the step with "Repair database" selected.

  • How do I make an album of smart albums?

I have created several smart albums in iPhoto, and would like to combine them into one.  I have make smart albums that have pictures depending on how old they are.  One is for the last three months, another is of pictures that are 360 to 365 days old and so on.  When I try to view all of these on appleTV, I can only choose one of the smart albums at a time.  I would like to combine them into one album, but when I create a new smart album, I am unable to choose the smart albums.
Is there a way to combine all of my smart albums into one to view on AppleTV?
    Thanks
    Chip

Create folder, and move all three smart albums into the same folder. Then select the folder. It will contain the combined photos from all three smart albums.
Select all photos in the folder and drag them to an empty album.  Only, you will have to recreate this album, when the smart albums change.

  • Cannot create smart album?

I'm trying to create my first smart album in iPhoto 8.1.1 , but seem to be missing the right UI elements.
This is what I see: http://imgur.com/28LWS
Note that I cannot see any add button to add criteria to the smart album.
This is the preinstalled version of iPhoto that came with iLife on a MBPro.
(I'm only about 1 week in as a Mac user, so I could've overlooked something easy.)
    Thanks for your time.

To my knowledge, I have not changed any fonts, however based on your question I should note that I had also been unable to edit events, and after reading this thread,
"Can't edit 'Event name' in iPhoto"
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1079297
I followed the instructions in this support article:
"Some fonts may appear incorrectly rendered"
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24904?viewlocale=en_US
Which had me execute the following steps (cut and paste from the article, so you don;t have to go there). Perhaps this is related?
    1. Log in with an administrator account (or a user account that allows you to install software, make changes, and so on).
    2. Open the Terminal application from Applications/Utilities.
    3. Cut-and-paste (or carefully type) the following text at the prompt:
    sudo rm -r /Library/Caches/com.apple.ATS
    4. Press the 'Enter' key.
    5. When prompted for your password, enter the password you use to login (or install software) and press the 'Enter' key again.
    6. Close the Terminal application and restart the computer. The fonts should now look properly rendered.
This article was able to solve my event editing problem.

  • New Smart Album is Full of Pictures

Trying to create a "Smart Album" in the hopes that transferring a video there will eventually allow me to export the video from iPhoto to somewhere outside of iPhoto. But every time I create a "Smart Album" it's filled with 45 photos...the same 45 photos...from elsewhere in iPhoto. How do you create an empty "Smart Album" in iPhoto?

a smart album contains all of the photos that meet the certeria you set - the only way tohave an empty one is to have a criteria that nothing eets

  • Can't see any picture in smart album

    Hi,
I just installed Apperture by using iPhoto's library. My iPhoto library has a couple of smart albums. When I am browsing my smart albums in Apperture I cannot see any images anymore (using iPhoto everything is fine).
    What might be the reason?
    Any help is really appreciated.
    Thanks
    Stephan

    Stephan,
there used to be a bug related to smart albums created in iPhoto, maybe it has not been fixed completely. I'd recreate them all in Aperture.
I also tested it with a newly created smart album with no success
Did you create that new smart album in Aperture or iPhoto?
If you created the smart album in iPhoto, create it again Aperture:
Make sure, the source of the smart rule is set to "Library/Mediathek", and not to a folder or project.
And I'd try to use a "Calendar" rule instead of a "Date" rule. Then you can be sure of the date that is set. I found, that Aperture sometimes was confused about the syntax for the dates, if a German date format was used. In the "Calendar" rule you can just highlight the range of dates you want.

P.S. Sorry, I cannot switch to a German interface for German screenshots right now, because I do not want to reboot.
