Smart Album & search filter logic

Has anybody found a way to do more sophisticated Smart Album creation or search filters within Aperture other than the very simplistic methodology we appear to be limited to of for example keyword search with only two choices of "containing one or more", or "contains all"? I have tried hard to find a better way and am concluding it is a limitation in the current release.
I'm thinking hear of some of the multiple criteria smart folder/album/search options that even an relatively modest product like iPhoto offers, for example keyword "contains xxx", "does not contain yyy", "begins with aaa" etc.
Thanks

Yes - what you do is add a new "CUstom Metadata" criteria (I forget the exact name but it's something like that). You then change the dropdown for the metadata type to "IPTC"...
You can then use keywords in searches with much more complex logic around them, like the "contains" and "begins with" you are looking for. It does not fill in keywords for you but it offers a lot more options for criteria.

  • More advanced smart album searches

Nothing special, but there should be a way to filter a search to only include pictures with faces in them. For example, I wanted to a do a search for pictures in Des Moines, IA that contained at least one face. Or have the ability to do a search that contains no faces. You get the idea.
Also, I'd like to be able to do radius searches for photos based on their location. e.g. 10 miles around my house.
Why can't we reference a smart album in another smart album? The list is restricted to dumb albums

there is it is called "name"
here is an example of how to find all faces that are not named currently
    make a smart albumn
    choose "Name" in first field
    Then "contains"
    The leave it blank
anywhere that it finds a name that is empty it sorts it to the smart folder and you then can go thru them that way
Please note that some photos have more than one face and even if one face is named and the others are not it still finds it and sorts it to the smart album

  • Smart Album search of a specific album?

Is it possible to limit the query of a smart album to a particular album. The "find" command seems to limit a search to a specific album while smart albums seem to query the entire project. I would like to have a smart album limit its search to a particular album (or possibly several particular albums).
    I am using Aperture 1.5.3

Smart Albums can search within a Project, the entire Library or a all the Projects within a Blue Folder, depending on where you made the Smart Album. In other words, only 'containers' that images actually live in - remember that Albums only contain references back to Projects.

  • Sun idm LDAP Search Filter, logical operations.

    Hi
Can any body please give me the solution on LDAP Search Filter
I need to get all the users from a LDAP
Whose attribute1 contains any of the values like (abc, bbc)
    OR
Whose attribute2 contains any of the values like (xyz, yxz)

    we got the solution
    (|(|(attr1=abc)(attr1=bbc))(|(attr2=xyz)(attr2=yxz)))
    finally this worked.

  • Can smart albums reference other smart albums?

    Hi all,
I am using Aperture 3. In iTunes a smart play list can reference any other play list whether it is smart or static. However, I can't seem to do the same with Aperture. I want one smart album to include an image for any of 3 other smart albums. For example, I am trying to create a library level smart album that includes all photos that would appear nicely on my iPad as wallpaper.
So, I have created 3 other library level smart albums:
    1024x768: All
    EXIF: Pixel Width >= 1024
    EXIF: Pixel Height >= 768
    Aperture: Aspect Ratio is 4:3
    768x1024: All
    EXIF: Pixel Width >= 768
    EXIF: Pixel Height >= 1024
    Aperture: Aspect Ratio is 3:4
    1024x1024: All
    EXIF: Pixel Width >= 1024
    EXIF: Pixel Height >= 1024
    Aperture: Aspect Ratio is 1:1
    iPad Walls: Any
    Aperture: Album Name is 1024x768
    Aperture: Album Name is 768x1024
    Aperture: Album Name is 1024x1024
I've tried "includes" instead of "is". It doesn't seen that another smart album can be referenced in another smart album's filter criteria. Is this correct or am I missing something?
I would like to do something similar for iPhone Walls.
    Thanks!
    Steven

Thanks for the input - I already knew my luck was out but it's always worth asking in case someone knows of some magic key combo or something!
Sending feedback to Apple about it is a good idea - I'll hold out and see if things are different in iPhoto 09 first!
    Thanks again

  • Question about smart albums - where does selection criteria operate

i maintain several versions of any given image. one for local printing, one for book printing and one for web; each with a different onscreen proofing profile. the versions for a given image are all in the same stack. put an appropriate key word (e.g. for book, for web, etc.) on each version in the hopes that i could create smart albums searching for the key words i wanted. it appears, however, that the search works only on the "pick" image in the stack. am i correct in this assumption?
wouldn't it be better if search brought up the version you were seeking?

wouldn't it be better if search brought up the
    version you were seeking?
Try this: click on the "Ignore Stack Groupings" checkbox in the Query HUD for the Smart Album you're working in.

  • Smart Album Scope

I have been using Aperture 1.5.1 and have noticed what I consider to be strange or, at least, non-intuitive behavior for smart albums. I'm wondering if others have had the same experience and if Apple considers this normal behavior.
First, some background. I have 6 projects in three different folders that are stored at the root level of the Aperture library. Outside of these folders I have other folders containing smart albums that are intended to search all the projects for the appropriate images. These folders are, again, at the root level of the Aperture library. The smart albums were originally created in Aperture 1.1 inside the folders in which they currently live.
Prior to my update to 1.5, this worked spectacularly. However, after my update to 1.5, I found that all my smart albums were empty. The Apple documentation for Aperture claims that the scope of smart album search is influenced by where the smart album resides. Smart albums, according to the documentation, only search projects that are 'downstream' from the smart album. My smart albums were, therefore, not searching any projects because they were created in a folder with no projects. This information can be found here.
    http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n302626
With this information, it made sense that my smart albums were empty. I'm not sure it was wise of Apple to change smart album behavior in this way between 1.1 and 1.5, but there you have it.
This was really disturbing because I like to keep my smart albums outside my folders with projects. Worse yet, it appeared as though I would have store all my smart albums at the root of my Aperture library to get them to search all my projects in the three different folders. That just felt ugly and very unaesthetically pleasing.
I found, however, that if I created a smart album at the root of the Aperture library and then moved that smart album to any other folder at any level relative to the projects, it retained its scope for searching realtive to where it was created.
In other words, it appears that the Apple documentation at http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n302626 needs to be changed to replaced every reference to where a smart album is placed to where a smart album is created. The scope of smart album searches appears to be dictated by where that album is created, not where it is stored.
So, my question to all of you is whether this is something the rest of you are observing? It seems strange to me, and I'm worried this is not what Apple intends and therefore represents a bug to them that they'll "fix" in the next release and thus destroy my smart albums again.
It seems to me it would make much more sense for Apple to remove this silly "scope of search based on location of album creation" behavior and just insert a line in the smart album setup that allows one to search particular projects or all projects. It seems that Apple has made an elegant search interface way to complex with the scoping issue.

what you experience is exactly how it works. there are other threads about the smart album "problem", with the same outcome.
the problem is not really, how smart albums are working. if a smart album is CREATED based on the entire library, it will therefore search the entire library, regardless where you move it afterwards. if you create a smartfolder within a project, it should be project-bound, regardless where you finally store it. that makes sense.
however, the problem is the changed behaviour between previous versions and 1.5.1. smart albums that were created "unlinked" (somewhere in your structure but not within a project or while the library was selected) worked fine before but show no results since 1.5.1.
if someone only has a few smart albums, then this is quickly solved, just re-create them in the right location and move them to wherever you want afterwards. if you have created over a hundred smart albums for subjects, ratings, clients, models, agencies etc etc already, you're in trouble. and this would be me as example.

  • AVI files - Search results different from Smart Album

I've noticed that when I use the iPhoto Search to filter all movies (.AVI files) that all my clips come up (eg. 700 clips in 2007). However, with a Smart Album I have set up to display the .AVI files, the last several weeks of clips seem to be missing (eg. 630 clips from the 2007 album). I've checked all the Smart Album criteria and they are correct. Is this a glitch in iPhoto or is there some other explanation?

    macblueduck
    Two possibilities:
    1. There's something different in the later files that don't match the criteria of the search
    or
    2. Spotlight (as it is this that indexes the Library) is not working correctly. Try opening the Spotlight Preference Pane and go to the Privacy section. Drag the Pictures Folder in there, leave it a few moments and then drag it out again. This should force Spotlight to re-index the Folder.

  • Smart Albums and Search ignoring tags / keywords

Why is it that once images are imported into PE7, and if their keywords and tags are edited in an external editor (eg. Picasa, Photoshop), PE7 doesn't seem to recognize these new keywords/tags in Search or Smart Albums?!
The weird thing is, if I open/activate these newly edited files, I can see in thier properties that the new keywords/tags can be read by PE7, but these descriptions don't show up as matching results when we do a search box or smart albums.
    What is going on?
On the other hand, Picasa will read, update and pick up any tags and keywords that have been entered in PS7, almost instantly. Why can't PE7 do this???

It's a design limitation of PSE.  When you first import an image into PSE, it will read the metadata from the image's file (keyword tags, date/time, caption, notes, star rating) and store it in your catalog (the database where PSE stores all of its information about your images).  Once the image is imported into your catalog, PSE will never read that metadata again, so if you change it with an external tool, PSE won't see those changes.
As you've observed, a number of other programs will track changes made to a file's metadata, including Windows Live Photo Gallery and Adobe Lightroom.

  • EXIF "Flash" Search/Smart Album Broken?

It appears that, in Aperture 3.1.1, trying to search the EXIF Flash value using a Search or a Smart Album is broken. My Nikon puts the values "Flash did not fire" and "Flash fired" in the Flash field, however, trying to search for EXIF includes "fired", or anything else for that matter, returns an empty set. (I did get a set of about 6 photos in a project with 228 photos when I entered includes 0. Everything else fails.)
Is anyone else having this issue? Any work-arounds? I'm trying to select all of the "flash" photos and the "non-flash" photos to be able to adjust the white balance appropriately. Any better ideas on how to do that?

Works here with AP 3.1.1 and Nikon D80 images as follows:
Select 'Photos' in Library Inspector > New Smart Album
Add Rule > EXIF > Flash; Includes; Flash fired (or Flash did not fire) > 'Return' (Enter) key to apply.
Works as expected, but I had to use the correct wording and spacing used by the Metadata EXIF field.
If it still doesn't work for you, I can only think you might want to try the Troubleshooting Basics:

  • Trouble making a smart album with multiple search criteria

    Hello,
I've been using Aperture 3 for a while now but never really created smart albums. Thought I'd give it a go this time around. My filter criteria are:
    a) Select all images that have a rating of 1 star AND
    b) Have a red colour label assigned to them.
The Filter HUD has the following settings:
    a) Any/All pop up menu = All
    b) Source: Project
    c) Rating IS 1 star
    d) Colour Label IS Red
The smart album adds images from the project that match the rating criteria even if they're not labelled "red". On the contrary, if unrated images that have a red label do not end up in the smart album (and correctly so, I must say).
My ultimate objective is to create 2 smart albums based on rating AND label color - 1 star & red goes to the client as proprietary, whereas 1 star & green goes up on Flickr as public.
Am I missing something? Please assist.
I look forward to a quick response.
    Warm regards,
    Faizan

The color label rule is puzzling, and does behave exactly opposite to what you'd expect: It shows the set of labels that are allowed.
You have to uncheck all labels you do not want ansd only keep the red label.
The active labels have a grey border, the others none.
Here is an example of an album with labelled images "red": Notice the grey border around the red button, and borders around the deselected buttons.
    Was that quick enough?
    Cheers

  • View content of multiple smart albums in Aperture 3

I'm having difficulty accomplishing the following in Aperture 3.1.3 in Lion:
I'd like to filter content from a folder (of several projects) that includes: One star or greater AND (orientation IS portrait OR aspect ratio IS 16:9). I'd like to view this content ideally as one smart folder to be used for viewing as a slideshow on Apple TV or iPhone.
This nested logic seems beyond Aperture's smart album capabilities (interestingly I can create this kind of logic easily on an iTunes smart playlist) - although it's easy to create two separate smart albums that accomplish this. I thought I could create a folder and then put both smart albums in the folder to view all of the content together, but that doesn't work. I understand that by selecting one smart album and the CMD clicking the other smart album I can see all of the content in the browser, or create a slideshow with all of the photos from both, but I'd like to take advantage of the auto-updating smart folders to just always be able to see the current content from both smart albums - or if anyone has any ideas for creating just one smart album....
    Thanks!

At times Apertures filtering capabilities can be under-whelming to say the least. As you've found out the type of search you are looking to do while easy in iTunes is not possible in Aperture.
cond 1 and (cond 2 or cond 3) type searches can be done as a two step process but unfortunately won't be totally dynamic.
    Here's want you can do
First select all your one star or better images and put them in  a regular album. Then run the OR search on that album.
Like I said it won't be totally dynamic as any new one star or better images will need to be manually added to the album.
    good luck

  • Smart Album : Inconsistency in the Date Type format used inside Aperture ?

    Hello,
After using Aperture 2.0 for some days, I tried to create a Smart Album using as creation option for the Album the Date + "is in the Range" option which is leaving two blank fields for filling the two dates which are supposed to be the date limits of the pictures that the user wants to select.
My OS X is set to the italian language so our date format is the dd/mm/yy type.
When I tried to insert some dates in our format (dd/mm/yy) the SmartAlbum seemed to not work at all (not selecting any picture, or was coming out with weird results).
After checking carefully that there was no filter set which could prevent the correct visualization of the pictures I had no explanation for the problem.
At first I thought that this specific option was buggy as the other Smartalbum creation options (Keywords etc.) seemed to work properly.
Then I had the idea and I tried to use the english format (mm/dd/yy) for the two dates inside the date range fields and to my surprise everything worked properly.
So basically it seems that Aperture recognises the dates correctly only giving in input the american date format mm/dd/yy.
What is not so noice is that there is no check on the date limit correctness so basically it is possible to really mess up with the dates.
I'm also actually surprised the Aperture doesn't complies with the OS X date type which could seem the logical thing to do or at least is not consistent with the date type management inside the program because for example the pictures Dates are instead correctly listed in the List View of the browser according to the OS X date type (dd/mm/yy).
I was wondering what is happening in countries where the date separator is not the "/" but the "." like typically used in Germany which would add another variable to the software routine which is interpreting the date input fields.....
Maybe this could help other non english users who could have been confused like me on the same issue....
Did you notice the same behaviour ? Am I missing something ?
    Uby

Smart Albums will search in the Folder/Project that is shown at the top of the search HUD as well as all Folders and Projects "below" in your structure. However, it will not search through any Albums in that structure. Here is an example:
You images are always stored in Projects (yellow icons) and lets say this is how it looks:
    FolderA/ProjectA (this Project stores: ImageA1, ImageA2)
    FolderA/ProjectB (this Project stores: ImageB1, ImageB2)
Let us say that you have two Albums like below but there is an image from ProjectB in AlbumA, which looks like this:
    FolderA/ProjectA/AlbumA (this Album has pointers to: ImageA1, ImageA2, ImageB1)
FolderA/ProjectB/AlbumB (this Album has pointers to: ImageB1, ImageB2)
If you create a Smart Album below ProjectA it will only show ImageA1 and ImageA2 since it only search ProjectA and not AlbumA.
This may be the issue you have.
Are you 100% sure that the Project your Smart Album is pointing at does include the images you are trying to search through. As you see above then it won't find them if they are only in the albums below that project.
Here are a few rules that I follow in order to avoid getting confused over where my images are located: A) Only include images in albums below a project that are stored in that project. B) Create all my smart albums at top library level and if necessary add extra filters like project name.
    Hope you understand.

  • Is there a way to burn multiple smart albums to DVD?

I just finished shooting a wedding.  I have made a number of smart albums for Reception, Dance, Ceremony, etc...
Now I would like to burn all of these albums onto one DVD to send to the client.  But I would like each album to be in its own folder on the DVD.  I could go the long way and export each album into a folder on the desktop and then put them all in a burn folder.
Is there a more automated way of doing this, such as a plugin maybe?  After a little searching I found BurnToDisc from Blue Room software but it looks like you can only select one album at a time to burn to DVD.  I would like to be able to select all 8 or 9 albums and have them burned in one operation.
    Thank you for any help
    Bo

    As I wrote:
There's only one problem, I'm not sure if this will work for smart albums in folders.
so unfortunately I was right. Smart Albums behave differently then regular Albums one of the biggest differences is the way Folders and Smart Albums interact.
With a regular album if it is in a folder clicking on the folder shows the images in the album. With smart albums this doesn't happen, the folder doesn't show the images in the smart albums it contains.
A few work arounds off the top of my head:
convert the smart albums into regular albums. With the smart album selected and in browser mode click on the magnifying glass icon at the top right to open the browser filter HUD. At the bottom of the filter HUD is a button New Album with Current Images click it and a regular album with the images from the smart album will be created. Once you've done this to the smart albums the procedure I wrote should work.
You could manually create the folders in the Finder and export each smart album individually to the corresponding folder you created.
Let us know if either of those work for you,
    regards

  • Smart Album not so smart?

Hi. A few months ago I upgraded from iPhoto to aperture. It's all rather confusing but I've been willing to overlook it because of the usefulness of aperture as an advanced photo editor.
Now however all sorts of weird things are showing up. The Smart albums in particular are bizarre. Even the ones that come pre-made in Aperture. In particular the “in the last month” and "in the last week" etc. contain images from all over the map, as it were. Yes, there are images from in the last month, week or what have you—but there are also random images from all sorts of other time frames, projects, albums and folders.
This is particularly annoying because it also seems to have messed up the way photos are synced with my iPhone which (much to my surprise) is one of my favorite things to do on the iPhone: display my photos. Albums on the iPhone contain images often repeated 75 times or other such bizarre problems.
I assume something is corrupt somewhere but I don't know how to “reboot” my libraries without losing precious information.
Can anyone tell me what is wrong with my smart albums and what is wrong with the syncing.
    Many thanks…

As a new Aperture user myself, I had a similar issue. Maybe it's related to yours.
Smart Albums have many options to choose from, and I was a bit confused at the beginning. While setting the Smart Album, you need to be sure you're marking the options you really want/need, and nothing else. For example, my "In the last month" Smart Album showed only one photo, and that wasn't correct.
But the reason was simple: I had written some text in the Search/Filter field (upper right), and obviously that was filtering the not-so-smart results in my folder.
    Hope that helps.
