Smart Albums and Search ignoring tags / keywords

Why is it that once images are imported into PE7, and if their keywords and tags are edited in an external editor (eg. Picasa, Photoshop), PE7 doesn't seem to recognize these new keywords/tags in Search or Smart Albums?!
The weird thing is, if I open/activate these newly edited files, I can see in thier properties that the new keywords/tags can be read by PE7, but these descriptions don't show up as matching results when we do a search box or smart albums.
What is going on?
On the other hand, Picasa will read, update and pick up any tags and keywords that have been entered in PS7, almost instantly. Why can't PE7 do this???

It's a design limitation of PSE.  When you first import an image into PSE, it will read the metadata from the image's file (keyword tags, date/time, caption, notes, star rating) and store it in your catalog (the database where PSE stores all of its information about your images).  Once the image is imported into your catalog, PSE will never read that metadata again, so if you change it with an external tool, PSE won't see those changes.
As you've observed, a number of other programs will track changes made to a file's metadata, including Windows Live Photo Gallery and Adobe Lightroom.

hello, failing miserably here,  cant import nef files from aperture 3.1.2 to iphone 4.  I am syncing with the projects and smart albums and I am only able to sync the jogs and psd's   Anyone out there to aid this frustrated photographer??

See my reply to a later simplified version of your question. I don't think that either iPhone or iPad recognize RAW files such as NEFs. And the iPhone is not designed to be a mass storage device like a portable flash or portabel hard drive for temporary storage of files, if that's what you're after.  As I mentioned in my previous reply, I have an iPad and have been experimenting with it as a tool for photography, hoping that it would be a nice travel tool for backing up and viewing photos from my Nikon dslr. But both the iPad and iPhone just are not set up to do that well. Both show photos nicely, but organization of photos is very frustrating since you can't create albums on the iPhone or iPad, but only back on your sync computer. (There is one very powerful photo organization app called SortShots, but you import photos to it and it organizes and stores the images wtihin the app not using the native photo app. It doesn't work with NEFs either.) I don't know of any RAW processing software for either device.

  • Just upgraded to iPhoto '11...missing Smart Albums and Flags...Help???

I just upgraded from iPhoto '08 to iPhoto '11 via the App Store.  While it appears that all of my photos are still on my computer, when I try to open my Smart Albums, it says that they contain "no photos."  Also, it appears that none of my photos marked with flags are still flagged.  Can anyone help?

How did you upgrade the library? Did you just open it with iPhoto 11 and let it convert the library to the new version?  If so then try the following:
Make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • I have uploaded photos from the past and they are grouped by dates.  How do I seperate those photos into their own folder/album so that I can easily identify the contents.  Also, what is the difference between Album, Smart Album and folders?

I have uploaded photos from the past and they are automatically arranged by date.  As a result, there are many events grouped into one library/event/folder/album (not sure of the proper terminology) I'd like to separate them into folders/albums/smart albums so that I can easily identify the contents.  How do I do that and do I delete the originals?

It would be good to take the tutorials and learn iPhoto - these are for the previous version but the concepts are the same and much of the command is the same - and it would be a worthwhile investment of time to take the iphoto tutorials - http://www.apple.com/findouthow/photos/ - they are very helpful and will save you a lot of time and frustration. - also the tutorials in iPhoto Help will be helpful - while iPhoto is easy and intuitive it does have a learning curve and it will save you time and pain if you spend a few minutes learning the basics
as to organization - events are generally time based and are the basic automatic organization - you can merge and split them to make them work better for you but they are not a good way to do detailed organization - best to leave them time based
albums are logical things that contain photos and are just pointers to the photo in the event so they take no extra space and all changes to a photo anywhere are reflected everywhere
Smart albums are the same except they are automatically filled based on the criteria you set when you create them
Folders are containers that you create and a folder can contain albums, smart albums or other folders so they are a big help in organization - like a vacation folder that holds folders for France, USA, China with each of thos folders holding albums of photos from the country

  • Smart Album, and camera model?

My older camera Pentax K10D, no problem for the Photos Smart Album to find all pictures taken with that camera "Pentax K10D".
But when i have seen the picture info in picture (cmd+i) has the text "PENTAX K-5" and when i put that criteria in a Smart album (-as i have done with my Pentax K10D Smart Album) the "PENTAX K-5", Photos cant find a singel picture taken with "PENTAX K-5" info.
So i think the "Smart Album" is a little bit broken...?

    thanx :-)
Yes, notice it after i put this support-help on apple suport site, but anyhow Smart Album is a little bit broken and they should fix that little bug.
And yes it works better with "K-5" than "Pentax K-5" that is the original-name in picture info, on import.
Anyhow thanx for the answer and Photos is more likable every time i use it, it will most likely be a good "PRO" -picture editor at the end :-)

  • How to store XML and search within tags

    My question
    ===========
exactly what steps do you need follow to take an XML doc, store
it, and query based on a tag value.
The 8i Intermedia text option Reference refers to
XLM_SECTION_GROUP feature. However, no examples are given. There
    is no user guide.
I searched Oracle's website and found one reference to
XML_SECTION_GROUP. The example given is a single row insert into
a CLOB column with a single pair of tags.
This whitepaper gives an example of an XML doc, and a query on
    it:
XML Support in Oracle8i and Beyond

It doesn't list the steps in between storing the doc and quering
it. This is crucial to the whole thing: does XML_SECTION_GROUP
allow all nested tags below the top level to be sectioned and
indexed implicitly? Or do you need to tell Oracle about all the
tags you are interested in, in which case what value is added by
    the XLM_SECTION_GROUP?
Does Oracle have some better examples on this?

Currently you cannot break apart an arbitrary XML doc and store
it into the database without using XSLT to create DDL to insert
it. You can create a schema and have XML be read and written to
it. Check out the XML SQL Utility available here for download.
As for the section searching, in 8.1.5 you can only get section
searching not hierarchical searches. interMedia in this version
doesn't understand the XML structure. This will come in 8.1.6.

  • PSE9/Win 7: Can I create a Smart Album of all images that Don't have a certain tag?

    Using PSE9 on Windows 7.
I'd like to create a Smart Album that contains all of the images that don't have a particular tag.
When I click on Create New Smart Album the dialog box allows me to select 'Keyword Tags'.
But the next item is 'Include'. Then I can select that tags I want.
I basically want the Include to be 'Exclude'.
Any way to do something like that?

    Hi,
    You could try this.
    1) Show all photos
    2) Check the Keyword Tag that you are interested in
    3) Under Options Select Hide best match results & Show results that do not match (i.e. reverse the last two conditions).
    to read
That should be showing you what you wanted to see
    4) Now use the top option Save Search Criteria As Smart Album and give it a name
That seems to remember the reversed conditions as well as the tag.
    Good Luck,
    Brian

  • Making Details:Duplicate from Smart Album?  Duplicate and Crop in one step?

I need to create details -- blown-up portions -- of several hundred photos. Many of the photos have three areas from which I would like to create details. I want to retain the originals as originals. I want the details to remain in whatever event the original is in. It would be helpful to have the details not inherit the keywords of the original. What is the best way to do this in iPhoto?
Here are some of the problems I've encountered.
    - My originals are in Events. I have tagged the photos from which I want to create details with various keywords. I have Smart Albums set up for keywords. Is there any way to duplicate a photo from within a Smart Album ("Duplicate" is grayed out)?
    - - Is there any way to select a photo in a Smart Album and then go to Events or Photos view and have that photo selected?
    - Once I have the photo selected, I want to quickly select the area of the detail and create a duplicate and crop it to the selected area. Is there an easy way to do this?
    - - Pressing "c" in Edit mode brings up the crop mode (as long as Keywords aren't show and you don't have a keyword assigned to "c") _with an area of the photo already selected. Is there any way to either not have an area initially selected or to with one key press get rid of the "pre-selection"?
    - Sometimes I don't know until I look at the photo that I want details. Ideally I'd like to be able to, in Edit view, select an area of the photo with the mouse cursor, and with one key-press duplicate the photo and crop it to the area selected.
I am willing to consider using an external editor.
    Thanks!

    - My originals are in Events. I have tagged the photos from which I want to create details with various keywords. I have Smart Albums set up for keywords. Is there any way to duplicate a photo from within a Smart Album ("Duplicate" is grayed out)?
No. However, if you search the Library on the Keyword (using the Search Box) you'll be able to duplicate.
    - - Is there any way to select a photo in a Smart Album and then go to Events or Photos view and have that photo selected?
No. Bu again, using the Search Box, with 'Event Titles' selected in the View Menu will do something similar.
    - Once I have the photo selected, I want to quickly select the area of the detail and create a duplicate and crop it to the selected area. Is there an easy way to do this?
Define'Quick'. Here's the quickest way I can find: Crop the pic to the detail. Duplicate the cropped pic and the Revert to Original on the first one. Result: your original pic plus a cropped version. However: you will lose +all previous edits+ on the pic doing this.
    - - Pressing "c" in Edit mode brings up the crop mode (as long as Keywords aren't show and you don't have a keyword assigned to "c") _with an area of the photo already selected. Is there any way to either not have an area initially selected or to with one key press get rid of the "pre-selection"?
    No and no.
    - Sometimes I don't know until I look at the photo that I want details. Ideally I'd like to be able to, in Edit view, select an area of the photo with the mouse cursor, and with one key-press duplicate the photo and crop it to the area selected.
Isn't that the same question as the 'Quick' one above?
I am willing to consider using an external editor.
What's nor clear from your questions is the actual detail required. Are these several hundred pics all the same dimensions, with the detail in the same location each time? If so, you could probably create a Photoshop action to automate the process for you. But if you don't have photoshop or have never created an Action then you might well be faster to do the job by hand.

  • Smart Album Keyword Bug

I have a library of 17,440 “Referenced” photos, grouped across multiple projects, none of which contain more than about 400 photos. Prior to importing these images into Aperture, I had already keyworded all of them; the keywords are embedded within the image files.
707 of these images have the keyword “Cruise_Ship” (photos of or on a cruise ship). I then created a smart album with a SINGLE filter, “Keyword = Cruise_Ship”. I have no other filters selected, I have no other keywords selected in the keyword filter, and at the top of the keyword filter, I have selected “Include ALL of the following”.
However, instead of the 707 expected images, this smart album actually displays 5336 images. I have verified, via the metadata browser that in fact most of these images DO NOT contain the keyword “Cruise_Ship”.
So, I tried the following (in order). After each step, I once again checked the contents of the smart album, and in each case it displayed 5336 images instead of the correct 770:
    Repair Database
    Repair Permissions
    Rebuild Database
    Reboot Computer
    Rebuild Database
As one last attempt, in the Keyword HUD, I renamed the keyword “Cruise_Ship” to “CruiseShip” (no underscore). The HUD correctly indicated that that keyword was used in 707 versions. I then in fact changed the keyword in those versions. I then created a NEW smart album, with the only filter being “Keyword = CruiseShip” (again no underscore) and once again the smart album incorrectly displayed 5336 images.
    I am using Aperture 3.0.3.
    I’m out of ideas...

I can't say I have the same bug. However, I do have one that might be worth checking on.
On my Aperture 3 here the keyword panel padlock works back to front, i.e. if it's displaying an open padlock icon, the keyword panel is actually locked, rather than unlocked as it should be, and vice versa.
This stumped me for a while, as I also kept finding unauthorised changes happening to my keywords. Now I know to operate the padlock opposite to what I expect, it does stop any unauthorised changes.
(yes, I submitted a bug report).
    Cheers.

  • Albums and tags in folder view PSE9

I have just converted from v6 to v9. In v9. I have a pictures folder with dated subfolders. In v9, using albums to search or tags, I cannot search the whole pictures folder ie all the subfolders. It will only search within the folder I am viewing. The means I have effectively lost the ability to search. It worked in v6 ok. I can search using albums/tags only when I am in thumbnail view. I have checked all the varioous options and views and cannot work out if something is wrong or a different functionality. In v6 when in folder view I click on "My pictures" all the photes can be viewed and I can scroll through all the sub folders using the slider down the rightr side. In v9 when I do this nothing is displayed and I have to click on a specific folder to view photos but only those in the subfolder. Any ideas how to solve this issue?
    Neil

I agree.  This upgrade has lost important features and is extremely slow.  If I had only known, I defintely would not have upgraded.
Hopefully, the folks from Adobe are following this and will issue a patch to make the organizer usable.  I'm about to just switch to Picasa for the organizer features.

  • Smart album by year and face1 and/or face2

For a printed album I would like to query my library for pictures from a certain year containing (and) face1 and/or (any) face2. I tried to create a smart album but it seems I can only use 'ALL' or 'ANY' criteria. My specific query actually needs both criteria to be mixed, is this possible? When possible please tell me how.

Yes, it is, if you use a combination of smart albums and the search HUD.
Use the smart album for your primary search criteria
    Date:  Capture year is
Use the Search HUD for further filtering: set it to "any" and with "add rule" add your secondary criteria
    Face: is  name1
    Face: is  name2
The Filter HUD appears, if you click the little magnifying glass beside the search field in split view.
Or, you could select both sets of faces in the faces view, flag them, and then define an smart album with the criteria "Flagged" and "Date:  Capture year is"
I really would like to know, if there is a hidden option like in iTunes , making it possible to define complex smart albums by holding down the option key when adding a rule , anybody knows how?

  • Cannot update or repopulate keyword field in smart album query HUD

So I want to make a new smart album based on a new keyword I just entered into my keyword library.
However, when I create the new smart album, and then check the key words box to select keyword criteria, I only get an old list of keywords to choose from. The new key word is not there. And there are old key words there that I've since deleted. I've tried restarting aperture and my computer several times.
I cannot make a smart album with one new keyword I've created because It won't show up in the query HUD.
    Any ideas?
    Dan

How did you enter it in your keyword library?
You have to keyword something before it will show up in the filter.
This shows how to make any of the keywords visible:

  • Smart Album Not Displaying All Photos for Keywords

    Hello,
    hmmm ...
I have a smart album looking for a specific keyword. This album is displaying the correct numbers of fotos with the correct keywords - but some fotos are not displayed (white background, filesize 0, exclamation mark when trying to edit).
I have checked, that the fotos are still on place: they are in the library, the (same) keyword search out of the library is working, spotlight is finding them. I did a database rebuilt.
But i have still the problem, which seems to exist only with smart albums.
    Any suggestions?
    Happy new year
    Ivo

    Hi Terence,
You are right. The Photos are indeed missing, i opened the iphoto "original" folder, which ist empty. For what reason ever. The missing photos are others than i thought.
Now i'm looking to restore them - i hope i have a suitable backup.
    Thanks.

  • Trouble making a smart album with multiple search criteria

    Hello,
I've been using Aperture 3 for a while now but never really created smart albums. Thought I'd give it a go this time around. My filter criteria are:
    a) Select all images that have a rating of 1 star AND
    b) Have a red colour label assigned to them.
The Filter HUD has the following settings:
    a) Any/All pop up menu = All
    b) Source: Project
    c) Rating IS 1 star
    d) Colour Label IS Red
The smart album adds images from the project that match the rating criteria even if they're not labelled "red". On the contrary, if unrated images that have a red label do not end up in the smart album (and correctly so, I must say).
My ultimate objective is to create 2 smart albums based on rating AND label color - 1 star & red goes to the client as proprietary, whereas 1 star & green goes up on Flickr as public.
Am I missing something? Please assist.
I look forward to a quick response.
    Warm regards,
    Faizan

The color label rule is puzzling, and does behave exactly opposite to what you'd expect: It shows the set of labels that are allowed.
You have to uncheck all labels you do not want ansd only keep the red label.
The active labels have a grey border, the others none.
Here is an example of an album with labelled images "red": Notice the grey border around the red button, and borders around the deselected buttons.
    Was that quick enough?
    Cheers
