Smart albums based on date images were last edited

Here's a quick question to throw out to the masses...
Is it possible to create smart albums based on the date images were last edited within Aperture?
If yes, then I can't seem to locate it! - Probably right in front of my nose!
If no, then I think it would be a really handy feature so you can easily keep track of any changes made to individual images throughout your whole library by the date they were last tampered with.
Any views, or pointers in the right direction?
thanks
Jason.

Hi,
this is exactly what I am looking for too! I would like to extend the question to: Is there any way to find the date when a version was created or modified?
Thanks for your help,
Uwe

How do I create a smart album based on metadata content. I want to have one that has all my geo-tagged (latitude/longitude not blank) photos in it.

You can't. Smart albums can only search by album, any text, comments, date, filename, keyword, rating, roll, title, aperture, camera model, flash, focal length ,iso and shutter speed. You'll need to use another way to group them together.
However, you can use the demo version of iView MediaPro to catalog your library, find all photos with or without a GPS location, add a keyword to it and then write that keyword to the original file. Then you can copy those files, from the iView catalog window to a folder on the desktop for imorting into iPhoto as new fileswhich will then recognize the new keyword. (While you're at it, you should sync all the metadata to the original files with iVMP as described in Tutorial #1. This will preserve the keywords in case the library gets damaged and you have to create a new one and import the original files from the old library. Then you can delete the un-keyworded files from the library with a smart album: keyword is not xxxx.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Creating smart album based on multiple albums

    Hi,
I would like to create a smart album based on the ratings of the photo and based on more than 1 album. Is this possible? because when i do try to base the condition on more than 1 album, no photos in my smart album show up.
    Thank you.

    crouton800:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. No, that won't work A smart album can only search one album to display a specific rating photo in that album. That is, the criteria would be Album is A and rating is 5 star with the "all" selected.
That's because the All or Any criteria prevent you from trying to find only the 5 star photos in Album A and B. If you use the "all" criteria you'll get no hits and if you use the "any" criteria you'll get all of the photos in both A and B.
Also you can't have a smart folder, only a smart album.
What you need is for the following criteria to be invoked:
Album is A and rating is 5
    and
Album is B and rating is 5
and that can't be done with the present application.
You can get around this limitation by assigning a unique keyword to every photo in Album A, B and future albums in that folder. Then do a a smart album with the criteria:
    Keyword is "xxxx"
    Rating is 5 star
    and have the "All" selected.

  • How to make a smart album of "Today's images?"

So despite my near-constant complaining, I am still using Aperture for one jpg-only project (I won't let it anywhere near my raw files.)
This project gets a few hundred frames daily, and will continue to accumulate indefinitely.
I want to organize it with smart albums by date shot. Mostly, I want to be able to see everything I shot today.
So far the closest I've come is to sort by "Within the last 1 days" - but that includes yesterday too. Any ideas? Am I missing something obvious?

I've also thought about this, but more in terms of
the "Last Import" smart album as in iPhoto, to show
the images that were part of the last import. I know
I can create one to show images from specific
imports, but I don't want to keep modifying the smart
album every time I do an import.
Actually in iPhoto it is called "Last Roll". But anywayz...
I'm looking for exactly the same thing ... The one thing I miss from iPhoto is the "Last Roll" smart album. When I drag in a few dozen images with various file dates, various names, etc. it's real hard to find them again to further organize them, assign ratings, assign keywords, etc. The "Last Roll" feature was great and I could really use something like that again.
Anyone know how to make a "Last Roll" type smart album?
    Thanks,

  • How to create an album based upon date of importing photos

today i imported over 2000 photos with dates accross three years time frame. how can i create an album based upon the date i imported the photos? or can i.
if not, how would i add these pix to a specific album without going through the whole library some 15,000 photos strong now?

Check out the Film Rolls ->
    View -> Film Rolls
Each import creates a Roll, so the most recent one's should be easy to find. Select all and make an album from them.

  • Using Smart Album to Set Desktop Images

    Aperture 3.2.1 and OS X 10.7.2
I'm trying to set my desktop picture to rotate through an Aperture Smart Album.  Not that it should matter, but the Smart Album is basic -- one star or better, Stack Picks Only.  That Smart Album is easy to set up in Aperture and there it works as expected.  But in the Screen Saver & Desktop module in System Preferences, upon choosing that same album, the browser shows all of the versions in each stack, whether they're the pick or not.  In Aperture, of course, I only get the Pick because I have that option enabled.
Any thoughts on why this is happening?

Smart albums containing images from stacks behave differently when used to create a product (Media browser, MobileMe Gallery, SlideShow, PhotoBook).
The common effect seems to be that the option "stack picks only" determines how the album is viewed in Aperture, but not, what will be included, when you use images that are part of a stack for a product. With Photo Books, Slideshows, and Galleries you will only get the Stack picks included, regardless of the "stack picks only" setting. Only the Media Browser seems to respect the option "stack picks only". when this option is not set, all images in the stacks will be used on the Desktop or in the screensaver, when it is set, only the stackpicks will show.
But in the Screen Saver & Desktop module in System Preferences, upon choosing that same album, the browser shows all of the versions in each stack, whether they're the pick or not.
That behaviour I cannot confirm. I defined several smart albums with stacks, and only the stack picks did show up in the Deskstop and Screensaver preferences, also in the Media Browser in Pages and iWeb, when the option"stack picks only"  was set. But I was careful to quit  both Aperture and "System Preferences", before changing the Screensaver settings.

  • Smart albums based on photo orientation (portrait or landscape)

Is it possible to use orientation of the photo (portrait or landscape) as a criteria for a smart album? I couldn't find a way to do this. I'd like to create a smart album of all landscape photos and use that album as a source for desktop background and screensaver.
    Thanks,
    Zoran

Actually this IS possible in iPhoto '11, just not immediately obvious as to how.  Assuming all your photos are digital and contain metadata relating to the orientation:
Create a new Smart Album with the following setting:
Field: Select the "Any Text" option (second in list)
    Matching: Select "Contains" option
Value: Type "Portrait" into the keyword box
    Click OK and your done.
Substitute Portrait for Landscape if you want a landscape Smart Album.

  • Smart album based on landscape/portrait orientation?

Is there any way to add a smart album condition that limits included photos to those that are oriented as a landscape (or alternatively as a portrait)?
    Thanks!

No. You would need to keyword them appropriately.

  • During import, how to auto split one project into multiple albums based on date?

I believe I've done enough aperture reserach to get all my terminology right, so here goes...
I've created a file structure within the aperture inspector the the tune of:
Year [folder], Type of event (Occasion, special occasion, holiday, vacation) [folder], Project (Wedding), Album (i.e. Day 1, Day 2 or Pre wedding week, event, honeymoon).
I also have entire months with 7 or 8 pictures each day, that are of the same type/project (random dog pictures) but are distinctly different days (albums - day in park, in bed at night, watching movie).
My question is, can I import one project with multiple albums already created based on the date they're taken.  As I can see it, all I can do is split individual projects automatically by date.  But what if one project is over one month, but has multiple distinct days that would be ideal for albums?  One more example.  We did a trip to San Fran.  One day was touring the city, one day was a concert, another day was touring the city.  All one project, but 3 different albums (in my mind).  I had to import as one project, then separately go in and make albums.  I would like that done automatically.
My suspicion is that I can not natively do this within aperture, and that I would need something called an "applescript."  I haven't done any reserach into that area, so if that's the case and you know where I can find a script that would do this, I'd appreciate the help.
Sorry for the wordiness, just wanted to be clear.  Thanks for any and all help!

    Hi,
You need to create a new requirement in tcode VOFM for that, together with your ABAP consultant. This requirement will be used in copy contol.

  • Aperture tip for duplicating smart albums structure?

I have folders setup for each year 1996...2012.  In the last couple of years I've created smart albums w/i each folder:  01 Jan 2012; 02 Feb 2012; etc.
It's a simple smart album based on date.  I want to copy these smart albums to each year. But I hate going in and renaming each album and resetting each date. And on SOME of my duplicated albums the source stays as the year I copied it from, altho this doesn't happen all the time, don't know why.
Anyone have an easier way to create this structure? Thanks!

Hum, i'm not sure I understand what is going on, or what you are describing.
you say: "... Aperture is correct in it's assertion the image was taken on 12th"
    I dont understand.
When i've done the import, and look at that pictures metadata, the date/time is corrected. It shows up as 15:42 20080811 (youre writting).
So if the metadata is correct, I really dont understand how the computers time and timezone has any effect on the smart albums ... could you explain ?
Unless what you are suggesting, is that the smart album date is applied to the computers time zone, and thus when searching for the files, it automatically does a conversion of the time of the picture to fit the computers timezone => thus my 15:42 20080811 set to Los Angeles time zone, is researched using a French timezone and thus found on 00:42 20080812 ?
Wow, if so, this would be a stretch !
And if this is the answer, I do not understand the "feature" to import using a different time zone, and not be able to search according to it ?
    There is effectively no point?
In respect to the workaround you describe. Its effectively what I did, I sorted using 3 criterias: exif day of the month = 11, month of the year = 08, year = 2008. And for some reason that works !
Would there be another workaround? Instead of using the TimeZone panel, import them untouched, and doing a batch Time change on the pictures once imported and leaving them at the same Paris timezone, but compensating for 9 hours, effectively, bringing them to 15:42 Paris time, instead of Los Angeles time ?
If my memory is correct when having played with this, the batch time modification, did not compensate the days: Effectively, clicking 9 times on the down arrow when showing 00:42 12th did not change the 12th into an 11th ...

  • Smart Album's Display Wrong Photos (By Date)

Compiling the family photos from vacation, about 8 different camera's. Different clocks on all the camera's I'm trying to get photos to show up in Date driven smart albums.
    Day 1 June 25
    Day 2 June 26
I have adjusted the timezones successfully for most of the photos, now I need to perform some batch changes to clean up problems.
After I do this, my Smart Albums are not showing the right photos -- they keep showing photos from the previous day no mater what I do.
The Image Date is showing up as correct for the problem photos...
    Any suggestions?

Where are the Smart Albums located in your library? Aperture actually scopes Smart Albums based on where they are initially created. So if you, say, create a folder called "Smart Albums" at the highest level of your hierarchy, in a folder where there are no projects, the Smart Albums will always be empty. You need to create them somewhere that there are projects with photos.
It's a bit confusing until you understand what's going on. Have a read of the document on Smart Albums which explains how they work in particular. This really is one area where you do have to read the manual to understand… I think their functionality could be cleared up a bit in the UI to make it more obvious that they're scoped.

  • Can't copy an image from a smart album to normal album

I created a few smart albums that just show images from October, November, etc. Now I'm trying to pull a few images from each of those albums into a regular (not-smart) album (it will be of highlighted images, one from each month).
When I drag the image across, the plus sign is there, and it looks like it works, but when I click on the regular album, it's empty.
The only way I can find to extract an image from a smart album to a regular album is to choose the image and select "new album from selection", but that won't work as I intend to pull many images into a single regular album.

Nah, tried that. I have the new album set to "Show All" and no other filters.
I would appreciate it if someone else tried this and could say if they can reproduce it.
    Source album:
    Date: Capture Month: April
    Date: Capture Year: 2008
    Include Stack Picks only
    include if: ALL match
    Target album:
    New, empty album, no filters.

  • Limit smart album to a number of pictures ? like last 100 pictures...

    Hi,
Using Aperture 3, is it possible to limit the amount of pictures that appear in a smart album ?
A bit like what you do with a smart playlist in iTunes.
So is it possible to create a smart album that says something like the last 100 pictures added, etc. ?
    Thanks,
    Keith.

    Hi,
Yes, i know I can do this with a date.
But using something like 'in the last week' could return thousands of pictures if i'd just returned from a vacation for example, and then a week later, have zero pictures.
I'm just looking for a smart album that will be copied to my iPhone whenever I sync, with like the last 2000 pictures I took, and so that it always has 2000 pictures, even if there is nothing new recently.
    Hope that makes more sense.
    Thanks
    Keith.

  • Can't resequence photos in i Photo 11 smart album.. tried drag and drop.. also if I share a smart album to Facebook will it appear as manually sequenced or by date?

I have created a smart album with a date range and 'photo is flagged' and I would like to sequence them manually. The doucmentation I can find says you can open a smart alblum and drag/drop... not me. Can you help?
Also.. if I figure this out and Share the smart album with Facebook, in what sequence will they appear in Facebook?
    Thanks!

You can't sort photos manually in a Smart Album. How Facebook will display the pics is one for Facebook support.

  • Smart Albums not Refreshsing

    Hi,
I've set up Smart Albums based on whether photos in a project have particular keywords i.e. the album shows only photos that do not contain either the keyword "Artwork 1" or the keyword "Artwork 2". When I choose an image and apply the keyword "Artwork 1" with one of the keyword buttons, the photo disappears from the Smart Album, exactly as expected
However if I select several photos, and do the same thing, all the selected photos get the keyword (you can see this from the metadata badge which appears after applying the keyword, and also in the metadata inspector). However only the "primary" disappears. I put primary in quotes because I don't have primary only switched on, but the one with the slightly thicker border is the only way that disappears. The others stay in the Smart Album even though they no longer satisfy the criteria for selection in that album.
The only way I've found to make Aperture refresh the contents of the album is to quit out, and then relaunch. When I come back in the other photos with the keyword in them disappear.
Does anyone else have this issue where Smart Albums do not always refresh automatically? Is there a better way to force a refresh than quitting out?
    Thanks in advance
    David

    Hi Allan,
I don't think so. There are 309 images in the project. I shot maybe 15 new ones last night which appeared instantly in the Smart Album because they didn't have "Artwork 1" or "Artwork 2" keywords applied. Then I selected 3 images, applied the keyword, so it only had to cope with 3 changes.
I don't think of that as excessive numbers, especially since out of the 15 images, 14 disappeared instantly when the keyword was applied, but 1 didn't
    David
