Smart bitmap selection?

My use case: I made a screenshot of a user interface which contained a button on white background. After pasting this into Fireworks, I want to select this button together with a tiny shadow it creates on the white background. Is there a tool like "Smart Marquee" which would allow me to roughly select the area with the button and then would shrink automatically so that only the smallest area required is selected? Doing this manually using Marguee selection tool is error prone as I may miss some very light shades of the shadow (not to say that it's quite inconvenient).
Can a lasso or magic wand tool be used for that? If so, how?
Thanks,
Borek

You can adjust the sensitivity of the Magic wand tool, so, theoretically, you could do what you want with it. However, you would have to waste so much time fine tuning it that it wouldn't be worth it. What I do is zoom in so I can see the colors at pixel level, and then make my selection with the Polygon Lasso tool.

  • Disabling new "smart" column selection in preview

Does anyone know of a way to disable the new "smart" text selection in preview that supposedly separates text selections by column.
I have encountered numerous instances of copying and pasting text from preview into other documents where the order of the text or sentences gets mixed up because of indentations.

Thanks for clarifying and providing the sample. I don't know enough how the producer coded the document to understand if that's the issue. All I can suggest is reporting it to Apple. Send a bug report or an enhancement request via its Bug Reporter system. To do this, join the Mac Developer Program—it's free and available for all Mac users and gets you a look at some development software. Since you already have an Apple username/ID, use that. Once a member, go to Apple BugReporter and file your bug report or enhancement request. The nice thing with this procedure over submitting feedback is that you get a response and a follow-up number; thus, starting a dialog with engineering.

  • How to disable "Smart account selection"?

How do I disable the following function on an iPad mini?  Default email account ("From" field) is changed after I select a contact in the "To" field.
iOS 7 notes who the addressee is and what server it came from, then automatically adjusts the From field for you.

Thanks for your reply!  Changing the "From" field is only a temporary solution.  I have already set the default account.
When I select a photo or a note to send, the "From" field will be automatically changed from my default account to one of my other accounts (depending on what I choose in the "To" field).  I just want to stop this so called "Smart account selection" introduced in iOS 7 on my iPad mini.  Thanks!

This issue has not resolved itself.  Photoshop CC 2014.1.0 is now so unstable that I cannot use it.

  • Smart Object Selection

Why does making a selection inside of a smart object (say with the rectangular marquis tool) disable Free Transform?

There seems to be an inconsistency in the interface because when other targets which can only be entirely transformed are accompanied by a selection, there is no prevention of Free Transform. Even a pair of SO can be transformed when there is a selection.

  • Smart Object Selection Highlight

Anyone know how to disable border highlighting when selecting a smart object in the layers panel?  Designing pixel-to-pixel is cumbersome when the highlight appears and temporarily extends the size of the shape by 1 px.  It's just a bit of a nuissance.

Are you talking about the path showing for a shape layer?
You can't disable it by default.  That's what we southern boys sometimes like to call a "design shortcoming".
Edit:  Oops, it seems I neglected to read Brett's comment, just above.  I may have been wrong about this.
Nah, on second thought it comes back on and sticks.  It's definitely a design shortcoming.
You can hide it after you've selected the layer to work on the shape by clicking the path icon in the Properties panel.

  • Adding field in a smart form select statement

    hi,
i am modifying a report in which i have to add sortl from kna1 in the select statement .
when i try to modify the statement it gives error as i ahev defined the value in the global variable .
plzz help me out as help will be definately rewarded.

    Ric,
    loop at ivbrk.
    select name1 name2 name3 name4 stras pstlz ort01 land1 from
    kna1 into (vname11, vname12, vname13, vname14, vstrask, vpstlzk,
    vort01k, vland1) where kunnr = ivbrk-kunrg.
    endselect.
    endloop.
Seems you are modifying the  select statement in the smartform which is selecting some data based on the internal table data that is there in the driver program.
If I am not wrong you want to select SORTL too in the above given select statement.
In the Global Definitions declare a variable like vsort type kna1-sortl and then in the select statement add this sortl field.
    loop at ivbrk.
    select name1 name2 name3 name4 stras pstlz ort01 sortl land1 from kna1 into (vname11, vname12, vname13, vname14, vstrask, vpstlzk,vort01k, vsortl, vland1)
    where kunnr = ivbrk-kunrg.
    endselect.
    endloop.
Do check the select statement how you are writing.

  • It's Smart Sync selective posible?

We need technical advising about Synchronization methods on Mobile Engine 2.1 or 2.5.
    (The plataform is still undefined).
We have to develop a customer application which have to implement management of orders.
Our customer would like us to implement a mechanism to support this case:
If the user has a very important order, he could sinchronize at once without shynchronizing the whole database changes.
We know how to do this using Generic Sync whithout problems. But, can we do so using Smart Sync? How?

OK. Today, i finally found half a solution. . .
pretty simple. but works for now- unfortunately I have to manually sync...
    so-
I created a smart folder with all flagged feeds in Mail.app
I wanted to view my flagged feeds on my other macs
I didn't want to use yet another piece of software, or web based app.
My simple solution is - keep a folder on my me.com server named RSS...
Now, go to your smart folder, drag and drop all the flagged feeds to your me.com folder.
head home, read feeds, unflag, or better delete when done...
now, can anyone tell me how to create a rule or some-such to make the moving of flagged feeds to my me.com account automatic?
Rules don't seem to have "flagged" only as an option.
    thanks thanks thanks!

  • Addressbook smart group selection not correct

A simple matching condition for a smart: Card is not member of group xy doesn't work: Some members of the excluded group are still shown. I found this error in a posting as early as 2008 , but still no fix for it.
Are there any solutions or workarounds???

That condition does not work. When I try that, it just returns all address in the AB.  Funny that "is a member of" condition does work.
Perhaps no-one has reported this to Apple. Send feedback.

I'm assuming you are using Mac Mail.  Just select message(s) then press the delete key.  This will move it/them to Mail's trash (not the system trash).  You can then do a MailBox > Erase Deleted Items....
Be sure to make an appropriate setting in Mail's Preference Pane for deleted messages.
From Mail's help file,  "Specify whether to move messages to the Trash mailbox after you delete them. Otherwise, deleted messages remain in the mailbox, but are hidden or dimmed."

Still i am getting same problemIt is not a problem. Bitmap conversion usually is a very good thing. Useing this feature the database can use one or several unselective b*indexes. Combine them and do a kind of bitmap selection. THis should be slightly faster than a FTS and much faster than a normal index access.
Your problem is that your filter criteria seem to be not very usefull. Whcih is the criteria that does the best reduction of rows?
Also any kind of NOT EXISTS is potentiall not very fast (NOT IN is worse). You can rewrite your query with an OUTER JOIN. Sometimes this will help, but not always.

  • Is there a way to burn multiple smart albums to DVD?

I just finished shooting a wedding.  I have made a number of smart albums for Reception, Dance, Ceremony, etc...
Now I would like to burn all of these albums onto one DVD to send to the client.  But I would like each album to be in its own folder on the DVD.  I could go the long way and export each album into a folder on the desktop and then put them all in a burn folder.
Is there a more automated way of doing this, such as a plugin maybe?  After a little searching I found BurnToDisc from Blue Room software but it looks like you can only select one album at a time to burn to DVD.  I would like to be able to select all 8 or 9 albums and have them burned in one operation.
    Thank you for any help
    Bo

    As I wrote:
There's only one problem, I'm not sure if this will work for smart albums in folders.
so unfortunately I was right. Smart Albums behave differently then regular Albums one of the biggest differences is the way Folders and Smart Albums interact.
With a regular album if it is in a folder clicking on the folder shows the images in the album. With smart albums this doesn't happen, the folder doesn't show the images in the smart albums it contains.
A few work arounds off the top of my head:
convert the smart albums into regular albums. With the smart album selected and in browser mode click on the magnifying glass icon at the top right to open the browser filter HUD. At the bottom of the filter HUD is a button New Album with Current Images click it and a regular album with the images from the smart album will be created. Once you've done this to the smart albums the procedure I wrote should work.
You could manually create the folders in the Finder and export each smart album individually to the corresponding folder you created.
Let us know if either of those work for you,
    regards

  • New Album from Smart Album makes NEW VERSIONS of all files? Bug?

Got what I think is an oddball bug here, but see if any of you have experienced it.
Making a new album of the contents of a Smart Album with about 600 images resulted in the SBOD, a lot of time and disk activity and the creation of NEW VERSIONS of all the files populating the new album. This, of course, also doubled the number of files in the original Smart Album, since the keywords used are a match. First thinking it might be something I had not read in the manual, I grabbed the book and could not find this behavior listed…..so….my expected result is a new album with the identical contents of the Smart Album selected as the source.
I am creating a presentation for a client whose work is in multiple projects in a ~150GB library. All images are heavily keyworded, so making Smart Albums of specific elements of the work was easy. My intended workflow to get through this mountain of pix was to make Smart Albums of specific elements, then make New Albums from each, manually edit and reorg these albums individually, then combine my edits into a single book file.
Now the structure leading to this problem is as follows:
    1) I created a single “main” folder to store all projects and other elements and hierarchy for this client. Clicking on this folder returns some 8500 images spanning multiple projects…all as expected.
    2) At the top level of this “main” folder, I made about 20 Smart Albums to presort the main elements I wanted to include. I made the first Smart Album by clicking the icon in the top bar. The rest of the smart albums I made by duplicating the previous Smart Album, then changing keyword selection. I would select the new keywords I wanted, then de-select the ones that were from the album I had duplicated. The reason I did it that was for speed, there is little delay in displaying the items that were already searched for, and a significant delay in going from new. Anyway, somewhere in this process, I decided to organize my workflow further, so I created a new folder (calling it Smart Album Selects) at the same level as the Smart Albums, and then dragged the Smart Albums into the new Smart Album Selects folder. Still, no problem.
    3) Later in my session, I went to create another new Smart Album, and this time I did so already in the Smart Album Selects folder. When I opened the HUD to select the keywords, the Keyword area and check box were greyed out!!! Weird, I though….so I simply duplicated an existing Smart Album from my Smart Album Selects folder, opened the HUD, and sure enough, all my keywords were there. I changed the keyword selection, and went on with work. During the day I did this same operation 3 more times, making 4 Smart Albums created the same way.
    4) OK…here is the strange behavior. To make my new custom album from the Smart Album selects, I selected one of the Smart Albums, and clicked on the New Album icon. Got the expected dialog, make with 1 image or all images, selected all images, and instead of a new album popping up moments later, I got the SBOD, and the Activity Monitor said Aperture and my hard disk was cranking away. About 4-5 minutes later, Aperture became responsive again, and had created a new album. However, upon inspection, the album contained NEW VERSIONS of all the images that were in the Smart Album, about 600 files.
    5) I went back and clicked on a different Smart Album in the same spot in the hierarchy…but it was one of the first ones I had created (meaning I built this BEFORE reorganizing into the Smart Album Selects folder). Tried making a new album again, with 1 image, worked fine, popped up instantly. Tried selecting 4 images, same thing, worked fine. Selected All, made album, worked fine.
    6) Went back to the Smart Album I had the problem with, this time selected 4 images, make New Album, and sure enough the New Album had NEW VERSIONS of the pix again…OK, I went back to the top of my folder hierarchy, my “main” folder and made a brand new Smart Album by clicking the icon, and selecting keywords. Made a new album from that, no problem, popped up instantly, no new versions.
    7) I then re-made all my Smart Albums at the top of the folder hierarchy, and they all work fine creating new albums. I got back to the task at hand…hopefully there is enough data here to let the Aperture engineers find this problem…Assuming, that is it is not just me misunderstanding some element in the program.
Sorry for the length, but has anyone else run into this??
PowerBook G4 1.67 2GB RAM 128MB ATI Video, External FW Drives for library   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Nope, all the images at this point in my workflow have been unstacked, with the non-picked members of the original stacks discarded.
Now that it seems I am not the only one who has witnessed this behavior, what I am really trying to find out, is what is the definitive proper operation of this according to the Aperture group at Apple.
Assuming I have opened a Smart Album with images displayed, and no images are selected.
    Is the correct behavior:
    1) Selecting New Album makes a new Untitled Album (very quickly) with the identical contents of the Smart Album....OR...
    2) Selecting New Album makes a new Untitled Album (slowly) with NEW VERSIONS of the contents of the Smart Album. (Also, depending upon the number of images, typically brings up SBOD and makes Aperture unresponsive until it is complete.)
Now what I expected to happen was #1, as it is what happens when I select New Album when a project is selected. Given Apple's human interface creedo for intuitive operation, I think this is the most intuitive choice, because I can't think of a good reason I would want to double the number of versions of all files in an album, unless I expressly told the app to do this.
Could an Apple guy provide the definitive answer, please...
Thanks in advance for your help.

  • Smart playlists not updating live after 3.1.1 upgrade

Same discussion started back in February about the 3.0 update (http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=9937797)
I thought for sure live updating would work properly with such an update from 3.0 -> 3.1.1, but no luck! I guess it takes more than 7 months to fix this.
As a refresher -- if you have a smart playlist that includes a "not played in the last xx days" condition, the old OS (2.2.1) would automatically remove a played song from the smart playlist on the iPod so your playlist is always valid. However, in 3.0 and 3.1.1, the iPod does not automatically recalculate the smart playlist and you have to sync with iTunes to get the song to be removed.

I have discovered a workaround for this issue. As with most workarounds, it's not too pretty, but it gets you there.
Knowing that live updating smart playlists that refer to other playlists won't properly update on the iPod, and taking advantage of the fact that iTunes 9 now allows for nested logic in smart playlists, we can make a complex nested logic smart playlist that live updates on the iPod as long as it doesn't refer to another playlist. In place of referring to another playlist, refer to some metadata instead. The cleanest metadata tag in my opinion is "Category." It is metadata that does not by default display in playlist view (you can enable it under the View menu), and is not visible when selecting Get Info on a track. You can use the excellent "Enter Category Text for Selected v1.1" script to enter Category tags, available at http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=entercategorytext . Just enter the name of the playlist the track is contained in for the Category tag.
I'll give an example of how this works. Let's say you have a long playlist named "day" containing certain tracks you like to listen to when the sun is out. You want to create an intelligent and self-updating megamix playlist of tracks only from the "day" playlist that will play songs you haven't heard, as well as songs you've heard and have rated. As an added smartness, you want to hear the tracks you've rated higher more often than the tracks with a lower rating. You want this new "day mix" playlist to live update properly on your iPod touch.
First you'll need to tag all your "day" playlist songs. Download and install the "Enter Category Text for Selected v1.1" script mentioned above. Select all the songs in the "day" playlist, run the script, and enter "day" for the Category.
Now you can make the smart playlist. In iTunes 9, create a new Smart Playlist. Using the new nested logic in iTunes 9 smart playlists, select the following conditions:
) Match any of the following rules:
) all of the following rules:
    ) Category contains day
    ) Playcount is 0
) all of the following rules:
    ) Category contains day
    ) Rating is *
) Last Played is not in the last 6 months
) all of the following rules:
    ) Category contains day
    ) Rating is **
) Last Played is not in the last 5 months
) all of the following rules:
    ) Category contains day
    ) Rating is *
) Last Played is not in the last 4 months
) all of the following rules:
    ) Category contains day
    ) Rating is **
) Last Played is not in the last 3 months
) all of the following rules:
    ) Category contains day
    ) Rating is ***
) Last Played is not in the last 2 months
    ) Live updating
You should find that the new "day mix" smart playlist properly live updates on your iPod touch.
As with any workaround, there are troubling aspects. One is that you'll need to constantly update your metadata tag of choice (Category, in my example) each time you add new tracks to a source regular playlist on your iPod. I'm also unsure about overloading the metadata with a number of tags in the case where tracks co-exist on multiple playlists. Also be aware that smart playlists like this tend to hang the iPod for several minutes with the "Updating Library" screen, so be prepared to be patient.
I hope this is of use to someone. Please post any streamlining suggestions for this workaround.

  • Manually and quickly updating smart playlists with 'Live Updating' off?

    Hi,
I have a quite large music library (13,000 songs) and use a multitude of nested smart playlists that change often because I don't want to listen to the same song every day and I want to listen to good songs more often than bad songs. I'm also splitting up by genre, because not all my friends appreciate all of my musical tastes, and I myself am not always in the mood for every genre.
The consequence of this is that from time to time, iTunes stutters when playing a new song, presumably because it's updating all the smart playlists when the previous song ended.
Now, I had hoped that turning 'Live Updating' off would cause iTunes to update the smart playlists at startup instead of updating continuously. However, it turns out that though the performance improved dramatically, turning off 'Live Updating' caused the smart playlists to never update. Obviously I don't want that, since that means all my smart playlists are static.
Is there a way to have both good performance and easy updating of the playlists? There are a bit too many playlists to manually update very day by forcing iTunes to update the playlist.
An 'Update all smart playlists now' button or a 'Update all smart playlists at startup' feature would be nice...
    Any hints, tips, help, suggestions?
    Thank you so much.

Using the SDK, you (well, I) would do something like this:
    1. Get a list of all the playlists in the iTunes Library.
    2. For each playlist, test if playlist is a Smart playlist (Playlist->Smart() returns a boolean)
2a. If it is a smart playlist, select it by setting a property value for the BrowserWindow object (basically BrowserWindow->SelectedPlaylist(playlist object)) (for example perl code, see http://groups.google.com/group/comp.lang.perl.misc/browse_thread/thread/1248563d 743795d8/be1a88fc6eeab0e4?lnk=gst&q=itunesperlselectedplaylist&rnum=1#be1a88fc6eeab0e4)
2b. Using keystrokes (Alt-F,G), select "File..Get Info". Then keystroke Alt-U to toggle live updating, then Enter to click OK.
2c. Repeat above, which should toggle live updating off again. (unfortunately there is no way to be sure whether the starting state was off or on -- I'm assuming it will always be off)
