Smart Build - push - odd timing problem

I'm using a push smart build with nine images. KN will show all nine, but only acknowledges the existence of eight and the timing is off... the last image is onscreen for too long even if I click to initiate a page transition.

Smart Builds Timing - advise please

I'm making a slide show and am using two smart builds (push) on one slide: 4 pictures total - 2 showing at a time. Is there a way I can make it so that they "push" at the same time? I just started using keynote and I'm not sure if it's even possible to time it so they both transition at the same time. all i can do is make it change one after another. please help. thanks

In the Build Inspector, set separate timing for both Smart Builds and then drag the build steps to interleave the steps of the two build. For each of the 2nd Smart Build steps, set them to start with the previous build step.

New bug introduced with Keynote 5.2 - Set timing and order of each build has stopped working properly on Smart Builds

We're heavy users of Keynote and have noticed a new bug has recently been introduced into something that was stable. I think it has emerged in Keynote 5.2, could have been Keynote 5.1 also.
It's in the area of Set Timing and Order of each build when used on a Smartbuild. You can no longer set the Start Build field for each instance within the Smart build when the instances are interspersed between other items. The Start build field is just blank and unselectable.
To see this :
1. Create a bullet point list with 4 lines
2. Set build to Appear
3. Set "Set Timing and Order of each Build" to on
4. Create a Smart Build - set to flip
5. On the Smart Build Set "Set Timing and Order of each Build" to on
5. re-order the items in your Build Order so that they alternate between the bullet point and the smart build flip
At this point, you used to be able to set the bullets so that they Started on Click and then set the smart builds to Start with previous. This gave you a nice and very useful effect where you could click to reveal a bullet point and at the same time flip in a corresponding image. We've used this loads of times in our company presentations.
With a recent keynote update ( I think 5.2 maybe, could have been 5.1) this functinality has been lost. have tried it on Lion and Mountain Lion and it's not an OS issue, its a Keynote issue.
Could anyone from Apple acknowledge that they know the issue and suggest if it will get fixed? Right now we're hunting round for an old Keynote 9 DVD so we can install a pre build 5.2 version.

I've noticed the bug you describe and to me it's very irritating.
I also found some differences in the build menu between the last release and the previous one, and between the Mac OS X and iOS versions. For instance, the blast build doesn't exist anymore in Keynote 5.2 but it's still in the version for iOS 6.
What is your experience about?
I currently use OX Lion.

Images in smart build open right justified

Has anyone else seen this.
I've just opened an existing Keynote08 file in 09. And all my smart build push images have become right justified and off center. I can't find anyway of putting them back into the center. Can anyone help?

Have a look here. Only workaround I have found is to re-do the build. Send feedback to Apple via the Keynote Menu.

Problem with Spin Smart Build

Hi all, I am currently working on a year in review slide with 90 or so photos, I have an image as my Background and in the center of the slide I want to have the pictures spin in and out. It works except that I keep getting white boxes at random intervals where pictures do exist. All the pics are coming from my iPhoto libraries. Any advice?

I've run into the same problem on SOME transitions when exporting to FLASH (.swf) format.
In my case it ONLY happens if I have more than 12 photos in the smart build, and some transitions do NOT have the problem (FLIP and SPIN do NOT; push does - unfortunately)...
can anybody else confirm that the problem only happens with more than 12 photos???
also, the white 'boxes' in the center of the flash are the outlines of other photos... with 13 photos, the white box is of the 2nd pic in the build; with 14 photos, the 2nd and 3rd outlines show up; etc.

Smart builds in Keynote 6.0?

I opened presentations previously built with Keynote 5.3 in Keynote 6.0 to find that all my smart builds have disappeared!
The Action "Revolve" where you can have multiple objects revolve has disappeared.
I find it odd that Apple is removing features from a product - for the sake of interworking with the IOS versions.
This is a serious problem imho, there is no warning by Apple that there are some key keatures of Keynote 5.3 that are not longer supported.
I am using these animations quite often and they get a lot of praise from the audience, so I need to go back to Keynote 5.3 I guess.
It left me with a major problem of having to re-build my slides again in 5.3 from backup files because once you close Keynote 6.0 it saves the opened file in a new format which cannot be opened by 5.3 anymore.

In ecc 6.0, create rowline in the main area or where ever u want (say header or footer). This row itself contains the no. of columns u specified in that row, so u can place ur text element directly under the appropriate column.
Like this u can create 'n' no. of rowlines according to ur need.

Smart Builds on master slides?

I'm trying to build a "portfolio" template where i can create case studies out of a master slide template. Some of these case studies have many images in them, and Smart Builds are the PERFECT tool for cycling through them on a single slide.
However, when i place a Smart Build on a master slide, its contents are not accessible in the slide show itself.
This seems like a really odd oversight to me, since one of the most useful ways to use Smart Builds is on master slides. Unless, of course, i'm missing something and it is actually possible to use Smart Builds in this way.

Just took a peek at Smart Builds and now I'm wondering how editable they are (ie are they based on .qtz files). Anyway, you can workaround masking on smart build objects by masking them first, copying, pasting into Pages, copying from there, then pasting back into the Drop Zone (click to highlight it, then paste). It should work directly in Keynote, but, hey, that's why we love Keynote!

Any time I click on the smart build button on the tool bar or the actions tab in the inspector window, I get the spinning beach ball of death.
I'm not sure if it's an issue with hardware or software.
I've tried deleting quicktime codecs, final cut plugins, etc.
None of them seem to work.
Reinstalling iWork hasn't helped either.
Anyone else have this problem?

HELP! Exporting smart build over a video background to QT?

Hi,
I have a single slide with a QT movie as a loop in the background with a smart build of images over the top. It's for a corporate event and the build needs to loop during the coffee break.
I need to export this to a movie file and then place it back in to another presentation so i can make the build loop.
However, when i export to QT the background movie plays once, stops and then the smart build runs through.
I've tried removing the background movie as I'm happy to have the smart build only to loop. When i export the build with a transparent background it is replaced with black. This means I can't place this over the original movie background.
The other, more simple alternative which I can't fathom is to make the smart build loop on it's own on the original slide so I don't need to export it as a video!!!
Any help is greatly appreciated!

I've worked out that if you export to QT using png Codec it WILL keep the transparent background! I've now managed to solve this problem by creating a transparent QT and placing over the video background.

Remove background from Smart Build images

Hi,
I've just started creating my first project with Keynote, and so far it's terrific. The question I have is, is it possible to use the alpha tool, or something similar to remove backgrounds from images that I'm using for a smart builds effect.

The problem you're seeing is specifically with how Keynote copies images. Neither Pages nor Numbers has this problem. The problem and the solution is described here.

Basically, your choice is to copy through Pages or Numbers (or iWeb) OR to copy another object which will force Keynote to adhere to the transparency set with Instant Alpha.

Smart build editor is missing

For some reason whenever I add a smart build and insert a couple of images from my media library I'm unable to get the smart build editor to show when I click inside the blue box (in fact click anywhere). Any suggestions?

I had this problem and solved it by going to
Users/youraccountname/Library/Preferences/
and then doing a search for "keynote" limiting results to this directory only. There were 5 .plist files that I moved to the trash. This resets keynote so if you have changed any preferences in the application, you will have to change them back after doing this. You won't have to reenter the activation code.

Smart Build Separate Timings not working

I've created a smart build within one slide to fade one photograph to the next. (This is the only way I can see to get an audio track embedded into a series of images). It has a checkbox to use separate timings for each segment of the build. I checked it and sure enough all of the images now show as separate items in the drawer. When I uncheck it, they all become one build and it shows that the timing for image 1 is to be applied to all the other images. That's all great.
However, when I DO use the separate timings option and I change the timing for any one image, it applies for all the other images. In other words - it isn't working. Anyone else see this. Anyone have a fix?

Ideally what I want to do is be able to click through each image rather than set a delay for each element of the build. Sometimes I need to speed through this section of the presentation and other times I can go slowly through it. So, I need to be able to set each element to advance on click. Then I want to have each dissolve be a different duration. Some dissolves look better with a 2 second dissolve and others with a 5 second dissolve.
Just spoke to Apple, they say that it is not designed to be able to set different durations for the different elements of a smart build. The separate timings checkbox only refers to how long an image stays on screen before the next image comes up.
Of course this would all be a mute point if Apple would just add the ability to play audio across a series of slides within a show.

Adding text to smart builds

I am using the Smart Builds feature adding 40 photos playing to a song. I'd like to add text to each photo in the Smart Build, but when I add a text box, it puts the same text on every photo. Is there anyway to add separate text to each photo in the Smart Build drawer? If not, this seems to be a glaring error. Who wants the same text on every photo in the build?

Roger, try this....
Select your smart build on screen - then go into the build section of the keynote inspector, proceed to the actions menu, (this is where your smart build can be edited.)
You can flag a box in there "set separate timings for elements" this separates your smart build. then add text boxes on your slide with your info and using the build in and build outs, time the text boxes to correspond to your smart builds images.
hope this makes sense, it is a bit fiddly, but it is a way around your problem. good luck with it.

Keynote is crashing whenever I use one of "smart builds"

I have a macbook(cuoduo 32bit) with snow leopard (upgraded from leopard and tiger). I just found out that whenever I use one of "smart builds", the keynote(09) is crashing. I removed old keynote preferences, cleaned up all extra fonts or reinstalled iwork 09 but non of them fixes the problem. I can't find any more solutions by googling. Can you help me ?

Smart Builds to Quicktime

I have created a keynote hyperlink only presentation that incorporates various smart builds. When the Presentation is exported as a Quicktime Movie the Smart builds don't play unless they you right click them and select play. Is there any way of making them play automatically?

I am having the exact same problem. If I save as manual rather than hyperlink only, the smart builds work, but now a stray mouse click moves to the next slide, rather than letting the presenter only navigate through my strategic hyperlinks.
