Smart Builds possible in hyperlink only Quicktime?

I have created a presentation for distribution, so I need to use quicktime for compatibility. The presentation is set up to only use hyperlinks, but when I export to quicktime the smart builds do not function. Am I missing something, or is there a work around?
I can not export to manual, because then a stray mouse click would advance the presentation to the next slide rather than navigating with the hyperlinks to other slides that are provided in the presentation.

It it possible to use "Build Out" actions in "Hyperlinks Only" mode?

I'm trying to make a "Hyperlinks Only" keynote so that my students can navigate through exercises at their own pace. So far so good. However, I'm trying to make it more visually engaging. I can use build-in's fine for a page, but build outs do not seem to work. Keynote's inspector allows me to give an object a "build out" command OR an "action" command, but when the presentation actually runs, tapping the object just takes you immediately to the next slide without doing a build out or an action.
Is this a bug? Or is this something Keynote specifically does/can not do? Or please say I'm just doing something wrong and you can show me the light.

Build in and build out work perfectly well.
select the object on the slide then add the build in effect
start the build to automatically after transition
open the build order side panel by clicking more options
build out:
select build out and add the effect
set start build automatically then add the amount of delay
note that the build order has the build in listed first, and the build out is last

Smart Builds to Quicktime

I have created a keynote hyperlink only presentation that incorporates various smart builds. When the Presentation is exported as a Quicktime Movie the Smart builds don't play unless they you right click them and select play. Is there any way of making them play automatically?

Quicktime Export, Hyperlinks Only Option, What's The Problem?

Upon exporting the slideshow using QuickTime option (Hyperlinks only, CD-ROM Movie), the slideshow fails to initialize, the hyperlinks seem to function quite well but the slideshow still progresses everytime the user clicks on other parts of the screen. Doesn't "hyperlinks only" mean advancing to the desired page on a designated "hyperlinked" link only?
What seems to be the problem here?

HMMM....the links seem to be working using "hyperlinks only" mode with "apple intermediate codec" but the thing is, it fails to show the linked slide when it's clicked on the remaining slides! aaargh!

How to make Smart Builds repeat?

im sorry if this question has been answered already,
but how do you repeat smart builds, so that they never end, until you move to the next slide?
(for example, using the 'thumb through' smart build the animation ends when the last picture is reached, when i actually want the cycle to repeat)
(oh, and i've tried copying and pasting images to add them to the end of the smart build, but the unfortunate side-effect is that the file is now HUGE!)

Welcome to the forums!
Smart Builds can't be looped directly. One workaround is to create a presentation that just has your Smart Build, export that presentation as a QuickTime movie, and the place the resulting movie in your main presentation and set it to loop. (To make sure the looping is transparent to the user, be sure to put the repeat the first image as the end of the Smart Build.) The results you get should be pretty good.
Alternatively, if you don't want to go the movie route, you can create the single slide Smart Build presentation as outlined above, put a hyperlink on it to the main presentation, and then set the Smart Build presentation to loop. To do this, you have to set the Smart Builds to advance automatically, set the slide transition to transition automatically, with a delay (this is critical), and it the Document Inspector set the slideshow to Loop. The slide transition delay is necessary because the hyperlink will only work during this delay, and not while the Smart Build is actually running. If you set the delay to the same delay as used between Smart Build images, it will not be obvious. You can also set the hyperlink object so that it is transparent, and thus also will not be noticeable by the audience. With this setup, the presentation will happily loop continuously until the hyperlink is clicked, although the hyperlink can only be clicked at the end of each Smart Build cycle.

Can smart builds include other actions? Or can I copy a build?

I have a smart build with dissolves in and out. A few slides do need bullet builds. So far it seems that I'll just have to build the presentation slide by slide in order to incorporate the different builds. Any suggestions?
Also, a possibly related question: can I copy a build from one slide to another? I hoped that copying/pasting the build details would result in the same action for the new slide, but no luck so far. If I could do this, it would expedite the main question, as I could copy the dissolve in/out from Slide 1, then paste it into, say, all 20 slides, then modifying only slide 14.

Sure, Tulse. Say I have 20 slides. I know I can do a smart build that will let them all dissolve in/out, and I can loop it, to let it run on its own. All good. But a couple of the images need to expose bullet-by-bullet. So far, it seems that once I use a smart build, I can't change any individual slides.
Re: copying a build, I'd hoped that the transitions might transfer from slide to slide, as a spreadsheet changes references ("B2+C2" pasted in subsequent rows below becomes B3+C3, B4+C4, etc. So if I'd copy and paste a particular build (dissolve in/out), subsequent slides would adapt likewise, and then for the two exceptions, I'd just build them separately.
If I have to build 18 separate identical dissolves in/out, and two with bullet-by-bullet, I will. I'd just rather see if I've missed some detail that would expedite it.

Brian Peat, Kyn Drake -- Workaround 4 Hyperlinks-Only Export

Gentleman...King Huang has recommended I contact you two. I have an Interactive Keynote that I'm exporting for use on a CD-ROM. King's helped me with a big "interactivity" issue by creating a sprite track to solve one of my problems.
The FINAL issue is that I can't seem to get KN to export to QT and ACTUALLY work as "hyperlinks only." I've chosen that option in the inspector, I've even gone through all slides and put a dummy "empty" rectangle with no fill or links JUST BELOW the objects that ARE linked, hoping to "zero out" the rest of the frame so a viewer can't automatically advance the slides. THIS IS IMPERATIVE--they MUST follow the respective links in order to navigate the presentation.
I'm at my wit's end here and past deadline. The only things I can think of are ditching Keynote for the interactivity, hiring King or someone to do all the sprite work (or forfeiting MORE sleep to slowly do it myself), conducting an experiment incorporating BUILDS instead of individual slides, or something altogether different.

There is a problem with the interactive QuickTime Export in that a sprite is automatically created that's the same size as the presentation and it's set to go to the next slide. The only way I've been able to defeat this is to place a "null" object (no fill, no stroke) preferably a rectangle the same size as the presentation and LINK it to the current slide.
Are you just creating the "null" object without linking it to the current slide? If so, give that a try and see if it works.

Smart Build Keynote 6.2

Of course Smart Build is one of the most cool features of Keynote 09, however, can I run smart build effects in Keynote 6.2?

Smart Build was the editing pane shown in my last post, it was not an effect such and Keynote 6.2 does not have a smart build pane.
There are over 40 effects available in 6.2, you can achieve exactly the same end result, you just have to set them up manually in the Inspector instead:
Add you images to a single slide
Select all the images on the canvas; Command A
Inspector > Animate > Build In and then click the Add an Effect button
i would like downgrade my Keynote 6 to 5, or. install both in my macbook and my macmini. Is this possible?
If you previously had Keynote 5 installed and you subsequently installed Keynote 6, the previous version is still installed in the iWork 09 folder in Applications.
If its no longer installed, run the installer for 5, both version 5 and version 6 can be installed at the same time.
One very important tip, do not open version 5 files in version 6, there is a risk that they will be corrupted. Therefore, use version 5 to open version 5 files, and use version 6 for new presentations only.

Need Help! Hyperlinks In Quicktime

Is there any way to create a hyperlink that works once Keynote is exported into Quicktime? I'm a complete newbie with Keynote, so I have no idea where I may be going wrong but I can't seem to get it to work....does anyone have any solutions??

Wow, I guess there aren't many people using the QT export option on this forum. I only joined today and I'm a Mac newbie. But here are a couple of ideas.
- Does the hyperlinking work in KeyNote?
- When you export to QT, you click Share\Export
- In the dialogue box, you need to select "Playback uses hyperlinks only"
At this point you may have an "aha moment", which is what I felt when I did this. I suspect most people who want to export and interactive presentation need QT to read the slide timing from Keynote, and the hyperlinks too. I don't think the current export implementation can do it.
Right now I suspect the QT export options are extremely limiting in Keynote. But I hope this clears up why you're not getting any interactivity in QT.

Smart Builds on master slides?

I'm trying to build a "portfolio" template where i can create case studies out of a master slide template. Some of these case studies have many images in them, and Smart Builds are the PERFECT tool for cycling through them on a single slide.
However, when i place a Smart Build on a master slide, its contents are not accessible in the slide show itself.
This seems like a really odd oversight to me, since one of the most useful ways to use Smart Builds is on master slides. Unless, of course, i'm missing something and it is actually possible to use Smart Builds in this way.

Just took a peek at Smart Builds and now I'm wondering how editable they are (ie are they based on .qtz files). Anyway, you can workaround masking on smart build objects by masking them first, copying, pasting into Pages, copying from there, then pasting back into the Drop Zone (click to highlight it, then paste). It should work directly in Keynote, but, hey, that's why we love Keynote!

I'm not sure if it's an issue with hardware or software.
I've tried deleting quicktime codecs, final cut plugins, etc.
None of them seem to work.
Reinstalling iWork hasn't helped either.
Anyone else have this problem?

Images in smart build open right justified

Has anyone else seen this.
I've just opened an existing Keynote08 file in 09. And all my smart build push images have become right justified and off center. I can't find anyway of putting them back into the center. Can anyone help?

Have a look here. Only workaround I have found is to re-do the build. Send feedback to Apple via the Keynote Menu.

Use images with instant alpha in smart build?

I have a few logos with solid backgrounds that I would like to use in a smart build with the backgrounds removed. I can put the logos in the smart build with and I can also remove the backgrounds using instant alpha. I cannot figure out how to put the logos with the background removed into the smart build. Perhaps this is not possible since the instant alpha effect is non-destructive and doesn't truly change the image file? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

What you have to do it "set" the image WITH the Instant Alpha before using it in a Smart Build.

Image size is too big after "Smart Build Grid"

The Smart Build Grid feature is awesome. Unfortunately, I have one issue with it- it sometimes zooms the images too much when using the grid feature.
Specifically, I have a 4 x 3 matrix of rectangular images. With each Zoom from the grid, Keynote zooms too much, so that the center of the image is nicely displayed, but cuz it zooms too much, important info on the sides of the image is cropped out in the magnified image.
How can I set Keynote to zoom so that the zoomed image is only as big as the longest axis relative to the slide (thereby displaying all information)?
Keynote 4.01, OS 10.4.11, PPC G4 867 MHz.

Synchronizing text with smart build

In my presentation I have several smart builds with images in them. Is there a way to add captions to the smart build so that they'd be synchronized with it? I want specific captions to appear alongside specific images. Is this possible?

The simplest way to do this would be to group the caption text with an image, and then place that grouped object into a smart build. In this way, you can put the caption directly with the image. Note that the caption does not have to even be on the image -- it can be below it or above it or beside it, and it will show up correctly, with transparency where transparency should be.
If you want to use a separate build for the captions, you can set the timings for each stage of a smart build separately (check the Set Separate Timings for Elements option in the Build Inspector). Once you've done this, you can intersperse other builds with the smart build stages by interleaving them in the Build Order drawer (revealed by clicking the More Options button).
