Smart Collection Dates

When I create a Smart Collection using dates, I seem to get random photos as a result. For example, if I create a collection that specifies "Edit Date in the last 10 days," I get photos edited in the last 10 days plus hundreds of other photos that do not have any metadata dates in the last ten days, and I am certain that I did not edit them in the last 10 days.
How can this be corrected?

I posted a question this morning similar to this one. I was also getting many more photos in a smart collection than I had actually edited. However, I asked the question if it was possible that upgrading an image to the LR3 2010 process would change the Edit Date, which was the basis on which I was creating the Smart Collection. One of my respondents said, and I paraphrase, "Of course. Why wouldn't it?"  Another reported that the Edit Date is kept in the catalog and not in the EXIF or IPTC data.
If the Edit Date is updated when the 2010 Process is invoked, then that is probably my answer as to why many more images are included that I expect. What happens is that when I go to edit an image that has not had its process updated, I am asked if I want to update that image or all images in the collection I'm working in. I have done both. So many of my images have been updated by the 2010 Process without having been edited in other ways.

  • Lost all my keyword smart collection data

I temporarily turned off time machine for various reasons and something happened and I've lost my data I constructed to label clip keywords and group/smart collections etc.
Not sure if I can get it back. I hope I don't have to go back to lesson 3 and start over!
I do have a Final Cut Events folder and Final Cut Projects folder inside of the Movies folder on my HD.

I am sooo sorry!  Looks like I failed to notice a name in the search/find box filtering the data.

But it does bring up the question of how to restore various backups of projects and events of Final Cut Pro X.

  • Smart Collection date problems

I have some pictures in my catalog that have completely incorrect dates. My step son didn't set the date on his camera and they are in the year 2048. These pictures keep appearing completely out of context and drives me nuts!
For example, they are in the Past Month smart collection. And in the new Past Week smart collection I created. They are not in a This Week or This Month smart collections I just created. I really would like to use "Past Week" as opposed to "This week" but it is useless.
I haven't changed them because I don't know the real date but, alas, I want to keep them. It doesn't look like I can remove the date (which date does LR use anyway?!) in LR. Nor does LR support partial dates. I guess I'm going to have to make something up. Does "Edit Capture Time" now work in LR? I suppose an approximate date would be better than a completely wrong date (but of course I will forget it's not an exact date...)
    Any comments, suggestions?
    Judy

Just use your smart collection to hold all photos with the date 2048. Then edit the date in the exif data on the first photo, then select all the rest and sync the rest of the photos. I used Edit Capture Time and it worked for me. You might be able to change the date by selecting all of them first, and then doing an edit capture time. One piece of advice though, is to give them a unique keyword before messing with the date. That way if you need to re-do anything you will have a way to collect the photos.
To answer your question, I believe LR uses the capture time when you do a date search.

  • Can't view smart collections on a different computer

I've generated about a dozen smart collections from photos on an external drive. This was done on my laptop.
When I try to view the smart collections with the drive mounted to my desktop, I get the error message "collection target folder cannot be found". Sometimes it will say to purge the cache, which I've done several times, but to no avail. I realize the smart collection data is on the laptop's hard drive. Is there a way to put it on the same drive as the photos?
When I go back to the laptop, everything's fine again. Is there a way to view the collections on both computers?

Is there a way to view the collections on both computers?
I'm not sure but I think this is possible. Bridge is very user specific and a collection and a smart collection is nothing but a bunch of aliases. While the files are on the same disk the other end is different.
You might copy the collection file itself (on a Mac: user library / application support / Adobe/ Bridge CSxx / collections to the other system in the same location but besides I still don't know if this would work it is also a bit of a PITA to keep searching and copying those files.
My workflow would be to create new folders on the external disk and select the collection in the content window. Then use select all and copy (or move, whatever workflow suites you) the files to those new location. Those new folders could be selected in both machines. Not ideal but for the moment I can't think of anything better

  • Lightroom is not saving metadata. I have done several things to save and I still get the tag that states is is not saved. I have also created 2 smart collections. One showing metadata has been changed and one showing metadata is not up to date. No matter

Lightroom is not saving metadata. I have done several things to save and I still get the tag that states is is not saved. I have also created 2 smart collections. One showing metadata has been changed and one showing metadata is not up to date. No matter what I do it is not showing in LR that it is saved. I spent 2 days with Seth Resnick trying to correct this and we re created my catalog. It was ok, until I imported new images and same problem. Now I have a new problem, when I bring image to PS it saves it but does not bring back to LR. Am I the only one out there who has this problem?

  • Can I sequence the order of images in a smart collection by the dates the images were taken

I understand you can not move images around in a smart collection, but my question is, "Can I establish the order by date taken at the time the smart collection is populated, starting with the earliest date in the smart collerction?

You can select capture time at any time from the toolbar (to the right of Sort:)
Click on your smart collection and if you can’t see the toolbar press “T” once or twice to show/hide the toolbar.
Click the A/Z symbol to reverse the order if required.

  • Smart Collection "Capture Date is in the last n hours" not working?

In Smart Collection, the rule "Capture Date is in the last n hours" doesn't work for me. It seems to behave similarly to "Capture Date is today".  (See the screenshot below).  Has anyone else noticed this, or can you replicate this?  If so, I'll file a bug report.

  • Date picker in Smart Collection dialogue box

Unless I am missing something, there is no date picker in the Smart Collection dialogue box. This is annoying, and the opposite would be very useful.

You need to let us know the Visual Studio version and client type.
If it is the HTML client then often this can happen by by wiring up the tap events in the wrong place or similar mistakes.
If it is desktop client then you need to be checking your code, commands, event wiring and then posting back details if you cannot see the mistake.

  • LR 3.2 new smart collection not getting correct capture date?

Just created a new smart collection after updating to LR 3.2.
It's showing photos taken in 2008 and 2009, well beyond the last two months. Checked the capture date displayed in LR. The older photos shown have been edited within the last two months.
Bug or am I doing something wrong?
    Thanks.

There was bug with "months" since Lightroom 2. Looks like it has never been fixed.
Try setting "60 days" instead of "2 months".

  • How can I extract parts of the EXIF metadata to use in a Smart Collection?

I want to aggregate all of the images I've captured by Capture Month and identify those images that were scanned or have no Capture Date.  This question actually attempts to open the door for read access to all of the image metadata and the ability to store some of it in user-identified fields which, somehow, the user will be able to populate.
So - if the date fields (i.e. DateTime Original, DateTime Captured, DateTime Modified ) were broken down into, for example using DateTime Original:  Original Year-YYYY, Original Month-MM, Original Day-DD.  It may be possible to do this with a redefination of the schema used to define each of the fields.  That would be the simpliest, easiest way - if that's possible.
If it isn't possible (or not in the near future, anyway) does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks

With over 45 years in IT (I know, it only means I'm an old man - not that I learned anything ), I observed that many of the problems I identified had simple solutions.  The reason they weren't in the original releases was, the testers felt "Why would someone want to do that?  Or need that data?  Or that field?"  Why would you hold an iPhone quite like THAT?
Since Adobe defined the schema that captures the image metadata and defined what fields would be accessable and in what way; the most direct solution to this is to modify the schema through a redefinition of the date fields — all of them — so the individual elements are accessable.
Also, because one of Lightroom's key features is image management, these new data fields should be accessible for Smart Collections.  There's at least one other person in this community who's interested in a By Month Across Year sort and I suspect many people don't speak up, even if they have a similar need.
That's what I meant.  While outside developers (non-Adobe employees) might be able to come up with a patch for the solution, the underlying problem will still remain until Adobe acts.  Solving the problem is the less expensive means of dealing with the issue.
    I think.

  • Can't create Smart Collection, Save-Button doesn't work

i have the Problem  that i can't create Smart Collection, the Save-Button doesn't work, the Smart-Collection Window stays open and nothing happens when i click the "save" button!
i use CC with a new installed W8 and all is up-to-date.
Its a strange thing. Please Help me.

Just to clarify, Photoshop CC has not been released yet.  It will come out on June 17.
What you have now is Photoshop 13.x as per the subscription model (»Abo«) and it's called Photoshop CS6.  When Photoshop 14.x is released on June 17, then it will be called "CC".
It's not clear—at least to me—which images, if any, you have selected in Bridge when you hit the »Speichern« (Save) button.
Remember that a Collection is nothing more than a saved search, i.e. a saved collection of selected search results (hits).
Could you elaborate on what it is you want to save as a collection?

  • Smart Collection: How to select files with unassigned/unknown/null metadata?

Is there an easy way to set up a Smart Collection to show all files with unassigned/null data in a specific metadata field?
Example: Smart Collection to show all files where IPTC "City" is unassigned (null/ blank)
I currently have a mickey mouse way of doing it that works, by selecting files NOT containing a,b,c,d,e,f,..... in the chosen metadata field, but can't beleve a more elegant (built-in) solution doesn't exist for unassigned/null values
    thks!

"I will release a new plugin, Any Filter, in a day or two, that, among many other things, will allow you to search for fields with no values."
    that sounds great, thanks, John!
i know nothing about the LR internal code, but would imagine that having to check each field's text string against 36 separate conditions (a-z, 0-9) as i'm currently having to do is not nearly as efficient performance wise as just testing against a single null flag or indicator - especially in large catalogs (i have about 120,000 files in mine)

  • Editing a Smart Collection

Is it possible to edit a smart collection after you initially create it?  Or is it something you simply have to create all over again if you want to add a search parameter to it?
I have created 132 smart collections for a specific event.  One for each scene in a feature.  The main data that I used for each collection was simply the scene number that I listed in the meta data. Is there a way that I can edit this information?  For example, say that I have a song that I plan on playing in 4 different scenes.  How can I add that song to the smart collection?
I keep seeing and hearing about how smart collections are replacing Bins and maybe because I'm used to Bins I'm having a hard time adjusting.  Any thoughts, articles, tutorials on how I should be working with this would be much appreciated.

Just double click the smart collection to open the filter window. You can change the parameters there.

  • Update to process version 2010 & smart collection "has adjustments"

Buying the new Lightroom 3 version ofcourse I wanted to profit of the new process version. So I selected all images I had "not adjusted" before and selected Update to Process version 2010. This works great.
However I now have one problem.
I had and have a Smart collection which helps me in my workflow to find all images that have not been touched, so have no adjustments.
This Smart collection has become worthless because of the update to process version 2010 all images have been adjusted.
Ok, this is correct and yet I miss my ability to select images which I have not adjusted.
Once I have set the default process version to 2010 all new images are correctly shown.
Question: how can I select all those images which have only the process version updated, but have no further adjustments?

Changing the process to version 2010 is considered as an adjustment; it will appear in the photo's history in the same way as any other development adjustment. The smart filter condition "Has Adjustments" only has a true or false setting so you can't distinguish the process version adjustment from any other. Instead of using this method to spot the photos I need to work on, I find that I have more control over my workflow by using keywords such as "review", "develop", "print"; you can make these keywords not exportable so that they are not part of the keyword list in exported photos.
Interestingly, when one or more photos are selected in the  film strip and the reset button is clicked in develop mode the photo  will revert back to its original state, the "Has Adjustments" condition  will become false, but the process version will remain at 2010.
If you have a backup of your catalog that precedes the step where you updated the process version of all photos, open this backup, add a keyword of your choice to all the photos that have not been touched, then apply the process version change. You can then change your smart catalog to use this keyword as opposed to the "Has Adjustment" condition and remove the keyword you have set on photos that have not been touched as soon as you are done editing them. IMPORTANT: Any changes you have made following the date and time of the backup will be lost.
If you don't have a backup to go to, you will have to manually identify which photos, which from your point of view, have not been touched.
    Some ideas:
If you did not make other edits following the change of the process version, and have not made other edits on that date, you could built a smart collection based on the 'Edit Date" and then reset the develop settings of all the photos in that collection.
Another possible condition is a "Capture Date" range where you know photos haven't been touched yet.
There may be other options, there may be a plugin that can help you, or ultimately there would be means to access the database outside of Lightroom - contact me if you get that desperate to fix this!

  • After reinstalling Photoshop PS6 I cannot any longer save smart collections in Bridge

Hi, after reinstalling Photoshop PS6 I cannot any longer save smart collections in Bridge. I create a smart collection by entering criteria, but when I click on SAVE, it is not saved. In my old installation (before I had to install a new hard disk), that never was a problem.
I am using Windows 7. Before, I used a hrad disk for the system, now I have a SSD, plus seveal hard disks for data storage.
Can anybody help me with advice what the problem is?
    That whould be great. Thanx,
