Smart Cover with Passcode?

Hello, I was thinking about purchasing a Smart Cover for my iPad 2. I was wondering if when you open the Smart Cover, if it bypasses the passcode prompt or not?
Thank you for your help!

There is currently a "bug" that allows you to use the Smart Cover get around the passcode and access the home screen, search and/or an open app (if you had an App running in the foreground when you locked the screen).
The exploit goes as follows:
With the screen locked, press and hold the power button until the "slide to power off. . . " screen comes up.
Close the Smart Cover
Open the Smart Cover (it should show the power screen still) and click the Cancel button
If you had no running apps in the foreground, you will see your home screen and can page through your different screens as well as access the search function. You can not launch any apps, but you can see what is installed.
The Search function does return results, and although you can't open the results, there is still data available in the preview lines of the returned results that could be a risk.  Such as typing in Contacts returns your contacts list where you can see name/phone/email information, or Calendar shows calendar entries and location, attendees, etc.
If you had a running App in the foreground, you may have some limited capabilities within the App itself available.  For example if you had the Mail App open, you would be able to scroll through your inbox list and see some of the information that is there.
The above info is intended to be educational so you are aware of what could happen, but there are a couple easy things that you can do to minimize your risk:
Go into Settings > General and turn the iPad Cover Lock / Unlock to Off . . . at least until the bug is fixed.  You will need to lock it with the power button on top instead (quick press of the button) or rely on the screen lock timeout to lock the screen.
Don't let your device go outside of your possession.  If it gets lost or stolen remotely wipe it as soon as possible (either from iCloud or if you're using Exchange ActiveSync you can log into your Outlook Web Access page and under Options > Mobile Devices)

  • Smart cover unlock passcode

how do u unlock the iPad or iPad mini with the smart cover and a passcode

When you pull back the smart cover, the screen should turn on, and the enter passcode box should appear.
Enter the passcode there to unlock.
The Smart cover merely turns on and off the screen, it does nothing else.
What exactly happens when you do this?

Hi, I'm currently browsing the web looking for a case that is compatible with the smart cover for the iPad 2. If anyone has any suggestions I would be glad to read all opinions! Thanks!

I love the Smart Cover. It fits the way I work and I love the instant on/off and the always available screen protection. I wouldn't use my iPad without it.
I got a Cover Buddy for the back, because I wanted the back to be less slippery when I'm using the iPad in the classroom, teaching. I picked this back cover because it's VERY lightweight, easy to get on or off and, protects the corners, has accurate cutouts for the ports, and (in the colors) has a rubberized surface:

I have a Built NY "hoody" slip on case with a hard internal shell that I use when I'm in the field and I can put the iPad with the Smart Cover and the Cover Buddy inside this . But for everyday use, the Smart Cover with the Cover Buddy is a terrific combination.

  • Smart cover interfearing with notification

I Have had my iPad 2 for some time now and I have a smart cover I am running iOS 5.0.1, Now I have my Notifications setup and when I have the smart cover closed and sitting on my desk, coffee table, etc. There is no alert of notifications but the moment I open the cover all the notifications that happened while the cover was closed come rushing in.
Now I purchased an iPad 3 which is running iOS 5.1 and I went a purchased the official Apple Smart cover with it and have already noticed that it is doing the same thing as the iPad 2.
I have gone through all the settings and made sure that everything is setup correctly I know the notifications work as when the smart cover is off on both of the iPad 2 & 3 they work perfectly everytime.
So! My questio is what could I be doing wrong is there something that I have missed or is this a common problem.
    Thanks in advance

Thank you for yoru response, SBerman.
The reason for this question is because of the weight and dimensional differences between the iPad 2 and the New iPad.
iPad 2 is 0.346 inches (8.8 mm) while the New iPad 0.37 inches (9.4 mm).
For Wi-Fi with iPad 2, it weighs 1.33 pounds (601 grams) against 1.44 pounds (652 grams) for the New iPad. iPad 2 WiFi + 3G weighs 1.35 pounds (613 grams) against 1.46 pounds (662 grams) for New iPad WiFi + Cellular.
Considering the magnets for the older covers were designed for lesser weight and thickness, there must be some usage implications and effect on wear. At least logically there must be one.
I've also been told that the newer Smart Covers (in the markets post May 2012) have a stronger linking and less incidences of unbonding once it is standing or when being held when in the triangular formation used for typing or FaceTime.

  • Why does the coating of my iPad 3 is faded by the magnetic connection of the smart cover?

I bought the smart cover with my iPad 3 on July. Recently, I realized that the magnectic stripe of the smart cover that are used to attched to the iPad has faded some of the silver coating!!! It's normal or something is going wrong? should I vist Apple Store to solve it?

    Hello!
I can recommend you do the following:
1/ Quit Mail completely via the Mail-menu
2/ Open the Finder and find the go-menu near the top left corner of your computer display (not the Finder-window) Choose go to folder.
Copy-paste the following line into the field that appears, including the ~ :
    ~/library/mail/v2/maildata/
3/ Move all files that start with "envelope" and "ExternalUpdate" to the trash. Don't empty the trash in case we need to restore these files (which is not likely, but still)
4/ Restart OS X. Open Mail. Now it will re-import your existing mail. Is your issue solved after this?

  • Clean an ipad smart cover

    Hi
This is petty and my own fault but it's making me crazy. This Christmas I treated myself to a new ipad air2 with a red smart cover. That makes this not even 3 months old. I had the slightest thumbprint on my cover and with a black microfiber magic cloth and just a dampening of alcohol I tried to remove it and another mark on the cover. What happened was the color from the micro cloth seems to have to have stained my smart cover. I have tried every trick I found on the internet and nothing is removing the stains. It's just making me crazy that a tiny bit of rubbing of the cover could do this much damage. I've tried carpet cleaning, foam, light detergent, detergent spread on the stain and left to soak, oxi-clean paste to soak, erasers with no effective result.
The cover is plastic(polyurethene) how can you stain plastic and not be able to clean it up. If anyone has any ideas I'd appreciate hearing them.
    Thanks
    RL

It's a little late now but for future reference, you should only use some water and possibly some highly diluted mild detergent (like dish soap) for cleaning. Never use alcohol...it's unpredictable with what it does to different surfaces. Some surfaces are fine while others can react in a negative way.
As far as getting out that stain, I would try to go over the entire surface of the cover with the dish soap, not just the spot. You want to try to blend, not concentrate on the spot. If that doesn't help, I'm afraid you'll have to live with it or get another Smart Cover, with a lesson being learned.

  • App Stops when Smart Cover is Closed ?!

I have a couple of apps I'd like to use to control the streaming of music from a DLNA NAS to an Airplay speaker.
The two apps work fine but music stops as soon as I close the Smart Cover (with both apps).
I don't need nor do I want to have my iPad's screen on all the time.
Is this a case of bad apps or is there a setting I should know about?
    Thanks.

Thanks for the quick reply OrangeMarlin.
It is true that Apple's own Music app works fine with the cover closed as well as a couple others I have used.
However, Good Player and media:connect which are ones of the few that I found that can play "playlists" from my DLNA NAS do not work with the cover closed.
I have contacted both developers and have received no answer yet.

  • Smart cover affecting screen sensitivity?

I recently purchased my iPad 2 and within 5 days of using it with my smart cover, I have had problems with the screen. It is not responsive or frozen for a few seconds then goes haywire. It even opened up my settings and changed those then began writing an e-mail without me touching the screen. I had to lock the iPad for it to stop bugging out. Has this happened to anyone else? I will be taking it to the store but I haven't had a chance yet. For now, I am using it without the smart cover with no problems.

Yes. You overwhelmed the sensors on the right side of the iPad 2 which determine when the Smart Cover is closed and they obediently locked the screen. Nothing to worry about.

  • So I have an iPad with the smart cover, and it's usually supposed to turn on the iPad when u open it, but it's no doing that for me. Nor is it turning off without pressing the button. What is the meaning of this?

Wait a sec did this just start?
You set up the smart cover function in settings (you did that, right?) so, if you did that and it's failed you make an appointment at your nearest Genius Bar now.

  • Does anyone has a problem with the screen of the new ipad? (there's a part of the screen which the color in it is "very" bright) and when I move the aluminium part of the smart cover when it's attached to the ipad the colors change!! Help!!!

I'd take it into my local APple store and have them look at it. There may be something wrong inside your device.

  • Why iPad mini retina smart unlock/lock function not working when I using 3rd party cover with magnetic

I recently bought a leather case from store with smArt unlock/lock function with magnetic. I try to use it on my iPad mini retina when I try to close and open it doesn't work. I already on my smart unlock function inside setting. May I know where is the magnetic area  of iPad mini retina ?

The "Lock/Unlock" feature is enabled by installing a compatible Smart Cover/Case (or third-party equivalent) with an embedded magnet in the correct position in the cover. Are you using a real Apple product? If not, the cover/case you are using may not have the magnet in the right place or may not even have one at all.
If you ARE using a real Apple Smart Cover/Case and you have an Apple Store nearby, have them check both the case and cover you are using. You may have a bad magnectic switch on the iPad or a faulty cover/case.
I also remember reading here of a Smart Case/Cover which had the magnet installed upside-down and was repelling rather than attracting. You might want to take the cover off and flip it to verify this...you'll have to slide the cover around in different positions on the right-hand bezel on the iPad to see if you can activate the magnet.

  • Ipad sleeve with smart cover

    Hi,
I am looking for some type of sleeve for my ipad when I travel to/from work on my motorcycle. The plan would be to have the ipad in the saddlebag, but have a bit of extra protection from vibration and such. I have a smart cover and the thin back protector installed. I would like something with some extra space to keep those on and just slide the ipad into the sleeve.
    Thanks

I would just find a generic neoprene sleeve. Look at office supply stores or the such.

  • IPad (4th Gen) What is a good case that goes with the "iPad Smart Cover"?

    Hi,
I'm currently looking for a case that covers the aluminum back that also goes with the iPad Smart Cover. Thanks!

I've bought a ton of back covers. It's been hard trying to find the right one. I've settled on two really good ones though:
Caudabe Shell: This one's my daily driver, so to speak. I've got the frost version and it looks really good and has held up really well. Price is very reasonable too.
Switcheasy Cover Buddy: I like this one as well. Only thing is that they don't seem to have a frost version. They just have opaque colors, which I'm not a huge fan of. This is also a little bit more expensive than the Caudabe cover.
