Smart desktop working tips

So, this thread is not about screenshots (for a change) but about becoming a more productive desktop user. Special tools, tips and tricks you use to make your life easier.
This does not have to be DE/WM specific.
I'll start:
(I never paid too much attention to this until someone I work with brought it up)
There are a lot of applications we use all the time. Most of us are probably more in favour of the "run command" window than actual point-and-click. So, instead of typing something long in that window (eg `konqueror`), why not typing something short (eg `kq`)?
What we do is create a Shourtcuts directory in our home dir, using those short-form symlinks/scripts and add it to the our PATH through the .bashrc file, or some other startup script.
Now for a tool:
yakuake - most of you probably know this already. For those who don't, this is a drop-down terminal emulator, Quake style. The application is KDE based.
You can configure its shourtcut keys, I configured them using Alt+arrow keys.
Alt+UP - new tab
Alt+DOWN - close tab
Alt+RIGHT - move right
Alt+LEFT - move left
Nice and fast to work with.
So, what other tips/tools can you share?

Well... as a KDE user I can tell you about some things I find really usefull.
1. Amarok's global shortcuts. Either there are Win+Z/X/C/V/B (for controlling playback) or Win+P (for playlist). As I listen to music 95% of the time I'm sitting near my computer, this is immensely usefull.
2. Alt+F2. This is huge. Great for everything, especially when you learn the power of kioslaves (locate: or man: or fish:// or... user defined web shortcuts, read below)
3. Configuring your own global shortcuts. For me this included:
Win+F1 for my main Konqueror browsing window
Win+Tab for switching between tasks (the same thing you get when mid-clicking the desktop). This is really usefull, especially that you can switch tasks with arrow keys.
Win+E shortcut to konsole window on a separate desktop. I have a big almost whole-screen session opened on desktop 4.
4. Learning shortcuts in your browser (or defining them).
Ctrl-L focus on location bar
Ctrl-K focus on search engine bar (with ctrl-up/down arrows switch between them)
5. Mouse scroll switching desktops. I have a strip of 5 pixels on the right of the screen where I can always move over and switch desktops. On all desktops I keep it clear, so that I can do this trick. On one of them, 5 pixels from the right is the main window of my IM client. So wheneven I want to switch to it I just point at the place where its supposed to be and scroll like mad
6. Web shortcuts. These are one of the best things in KDE. Alt-F2 can handle them, Konquerors location bar can do them. I can't live without it.

Why won't the Avatar Interactive Desktop work on Windows xp SP3

As said in the title Why won't the Avatar Interactive Desktop work on Windows xp SP3. I have tried everything (uninstalling AIR, reinsalling it etc) I can think of but nothing makes it work. This image shows what I get in return every time I try to install the app. My PC meets all requirements to run Adobe AIR. Why is this occuring? I have the current version of AIR.

I am talking about so-called third party cases like from Zenus, not on apple smart covers. If they happen to have the wrong polarity, you can just trash them. But maybe apple has a deal with them, so that they can sell yet one more. And i guess then they reverse polarity for the next model... Extremely annoying, and, I repeat myself, extremely customer unfriendly product policy.

Desktop works, laptop doesn't

I'm having a great deal of trouble getting my Kodak ESP 7 recognized by my laptop (Lenovo T61, XP Pro). It's easily detected by my desktop computer, or by my Imac.
The big difference is that this is a corporate laptop, and it's got the Cisco VPN client on it, however the failure happens even on a fresh reboot before the vpn client is turned on - I've even tried turning off the vpn client service to no avail.
Any ideas? What can I do to troubleshoot this? I've tried using wireshark to see what packets are flowing, but it's very hard to pick out the bonjour stuff from the other noise.

OK, a little more detail. Both the desktop and laptop have the Cisco VPN client, yet the desktop works fine. I think I've found a workaround procedure on the laptop, but it's painful:
- boot
- turn off the Cisco vpn service
- power cycle the printer
Then most (but not all) times, it becomes connected again, even if I then fire up the Cisco vpn service and client.
Note that I can't put the cisco service on manual start - that messes too much with vpn.
I really wish either Apple or Cisco or both would fix this - it's really crazy that bonjour won't coexist with something that's pretty common in the business world.

Been watching HD TV shows on Apple TV for a month with my 1080i TV. Tonight getting error on TV, "This content requires HDCP for playback". All other media from remote desktop working OK, including 720p movie. WI-FI network running normal. Help?

Tonight getting error on TV, even on recently watched shows, "This content requires HDCP for playback. Either your HDMI cable isn't properly connected, or your HDMI connection doesn't support HDCP. Smart Album works with Desktop, not Screen Saver?

I've created a Smart Album in iPhoto, with my 5-star photos in it, calling it "My Favorites". In iPhoto, there are 116 photos right now. When I go to my Desktop settings, I see all the photos in "My Favorites".
When I go to Screen Saver, I get 5 of the photos in that Smart Album. I've got other Smart Albums, some with thousands in them, and they display just fine.
I've deleted and re-created "My Favorites", even using a different name. I still get the same results.
Any ideas why Desktop would work, but Screen Saver won't, with the exact same Smart Album?

Update: I'm now running 10.6.3 and iPhoto 8.1.2, and the problem is gone.

The only cache I found was ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.ScreenSaver.Engine/Cache.db. Removing that had no effect; might this have been the wrong one, and if so, where is the right one?

I have a mid-2010 iMac and just purchased a 2TB TC, I just found out that it can't join existing wireless network with new AC standard so attached to iMac via ethernet with TC's wifi turned off. How do i access TC now? not showing up in disk utility or on desktop. It is working fine with TM. My cheeper seagate drives etc kept crashing, so i didnt trust cheeper back up options anymore. Connected those drives to TM via firewire and could see the drives and access them.
Also, I didn't want to bridge TC with my new fios router that I paid 100 dollars for, to get N speed and also paying 10 dollars more a month for fast speed. I heard that bridging slows down everything and then there can be port issues with mail etc. I connect to the internet via airport only and it is pretty fast. Getting over 50mbs downloads and over 30mbs uploads. Plus everything in my home it connected to my fios router, airport express for music streaming, two apple tvs, vuezone camer system. I really didn't want to monkey around too much with my system. But are there other options to connect the new TC. Can't find info anywhere for this and called apple who gave me the info above. after hanging up, i see that i cant access my TC and I am wondering if i would have to reset it to turn wifi on again to make changes to the drive, turn off blinking light or repair it in disk utility if it should become corrupted.
For other with similar issues i did solve some other problems: when i connected it to my ethernet port on my iMac wifi stopped working. Found that I had to turn off the ethernet in the system>network screen, but then TM didn't see the TC so i restarted after changes and then it saw it.
Now a rant. I can't believe in this wireless age that Apple would make a product that cant join a wireless net work. The apple rep said i could return it and look for the previous TC that would join an existing wireless network. Are we going backwards?

Ok... it is getting a bit clearer but there are still some questions.
I connect to the internet via airport only and it is pretty fast.
I was assuming airport in this statement in your first post meant the TC or the Express.. but I now realise we are still in the mass confusion stage where apple calls everything wireless an airport. So what you mean is the airport internal card of the computer??

I think this is mistaken.
Putting the TC in bridge mode plugged into your FIOS will not slow the network.. nor will it cause mail or port issues.. in bridge the TC is just a fancy WAP and switch plus the network hard drive.
If the computer is close it will be faster than the FIOS.
You can run both wireless networks with different names.. so it is clear which is which. But you can also setup roaming so the computers themselves pick which is the best wireless.
I tried extending the wireless net work and tried joining wireless network, but the TC kept crashing and I had to keep resetting the TC. the Apple support person said these, extend wireless network and joint wireless network, are no longer a connection option with the new TC because of the new AC protocol.

You cannot extend to a non-apple wireless router.
You cannot use join a wireless network because when you do the ethernet ports will be cut off.
But that has not changed.. I don't think Apple support is correct.. there has been no change with the AC model.. it is simply a fact that apple routers do not work in join wireless mode other than as a dumb client. The same applies to AC as to the earlier version.. but I have asked another person to check this.
Join in the express is the only apple router that still allows an ethernet connection.
For now you best use of the TC is bridged to the FIOS. Wireless you can sort out between several options.

Why won't the Totals in Desktop work?

I have a number of sheets that need to have totals. The report is a breakdown of staff numbers by religious belief and location/age band/directorate etc (one sheet for each).
The report takes items from three different folders and the uses a count of staff number. When I use the Grand total option in Discoverer based on SUM of the count of SE numbers it does nothing.
Any ideas as to where I'm going wrong and how I can fix this?

Totals generally do not display for one of two reasons:
1. There is a fault in your code that prevents a total from being calculated - such as the presence of a NULL value
2. Discoverer is protecting you from yourself by not generating results that would be in error - such as cartesian joins or replicated items
A couple of things to try are:
1. Switch the formula for the calculation from SUM to CELL SUM
2. Change the Aggregation tab settings on the Options screen (use Tools | Options) and drop it down a notch from using the default to the next one on the list (show the values that cannot be aggregated) - if this doesn't work try dropping it down to the lowest level (show the sum in the contributing cells)
3. If you still have a problem it could be that you have duplicated items - out of the box Discoverer won't sum these
To solve the duplicated items problem requires you add a new setting to your registry called AllowAggregationOverRepeatedValues. There is a good note about this on MetaLink called Subtotals and Grand Totals Showing Blanks in Discoverer Desktop as note number: 358707.1

Enabling Wrap-Up Data in Cisco Desktop Work Flow Administrator

Hello! I am running Cisco UCCX v7.0 and am trying to enable wrap-up data on my calls.
In the screenshot below, I am working with the Lending Work Flow Group and have added several Available Wrap-up Data reasons to the Work Flow Wrap-up Data reasons. I have also checked the boxes to Enable Wrap-up Data and to Enable Automatic State Change. I then clicked the Apply button and then manually synchronized the directory services from the Cisco Desktop Administrator webpage. Finally, I had the Agent login/logout of the CAD.
But when testing, the Agent was not prompted with a Wrap-up Data window. Is there a step I missed? Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Do you mean the Cisco Desktop Enterprise Service under System->Control Center? No, I have not restarted that service.
What is the business impact of doing so? Will it logout and/or disconnect agents that are logged into the CAD and on calls? Should it be done after business hours in a maintenance window?

Major change to how smart folders work?

I'm an ex-PC user and one way I configured the finder to work more like how I was used to working was to color code all my folders red and the half-dozen files I work with on a daily basis green. I had smart folders for both in the Tiger sidebar and they were there all the time. In Leopard they are only there in a finder window and are in the search for area. When I am in a program and want to open a file, that search for section is no longer in the sidebar, so I have to drill down through all folders and sub-folders to find the file I want. Am I going to be limited to launching files directly from the smart folder to easily find the files I need and not open from within the application?

By default when you make a Smart Folder and save it you get it saved into this folder:
"/Users/yourname/Library/Saved Searches"
If you open that folder you should see your Smart Folders. Drag them into the "Places" section of the Sidebar in your open Finder window. They will now show up in the Open dialog window of your application. Of course, you will have them listed twice in the normal Finder window: once in places, so you can see them in the Open window, and once in Search For. Jeez, don't the programmers ever have to talk to each other? Anyway, the sensible thing to do is to have other sorts of things, that you don't need access to from an application, in the Search For section--or just close that section up. This is definitely another "what were they thinking" moment.

How to make the Keynote Turntable Smart Build work properly?

I've created a single slide presentation using the Keynote's Turntable Smart Build and inserted it in iBooks Author (Insert>Widget>Keynote), but when previewed at iPad, the effect does not work properly. The images used on the presentation just changes between themselves, fading in and out simultaneously.
Has anyone managed to use this feature successfully?

LR Mobile 5.6 Desktop: Up sync from DL desktop on Mac to Adobe Photo Cloud does not work, down sync from Cloud to DL desktop works

I have successfully used DL Mobile for some months (currently: some 3+k photos in Adobe's Photo Cloud, in 56 collections).
Some two weeks ago sync on DL desktop went erratic, i.e. sync attempts were always active according to the spinning wheel in the UI, but no sync happened. Right now this has changed to a status of no sync indication on Mac DL desktop whatsoever (no spinning wheel). No upward sync of changes from DL Mac to the Adobe Photo Cloud is happening.
BUT: Up-sync to the Adobe Photo Cloud from iPad works: For example, change results can be seen immediately via browser in Adobe's Cloud collection library. AND, strange enough: the changes from iPad via Cloud are synced down to DL desktop on the Mac as well (without any sync indicator visible on DL desktop though).
What can I do to get back to full functioning?

You can trigger the log via LR Desktop preferences -> Lightroom Mobile and when you hold down the alt key you will notice a generate diagnostic log button
