SMART Diagnostics Report Hardware Failure
Hello all. I'm the owner of a Powermac G5 tower, which has been recently acting up and pausing. Yesterday, out of the blue Techtool Pro told me that my system drive had reported a hardware failure. I immediately turned the computer off and booted up from my installation disk. (10.4) Sure enough, the drive is reporting a "fatal hardware failure" and suggesting I back up as much of my data as I can. At the moment, I am unable to find my Techtool DVD so I can't really give much more information.
It looks like my only option is to boot from the drive and use Carbon Copy Cloner to back it up onto my external.
Just in case this could have something to do with it, my 500gb Seagate Freeagent drive that I usually backed up my HD onto failed a few weeks ago. Therefore, I only recently was able to get a new external, and therefore I have NO other backups of the disk available.
Also, two years ago a hard drive in the same machine failed completely. I don't know if these three failures are related. (I really doubt the Freeagent failing has anything to do with it.) But my current HD that failed could very well have failed for the same reason that the one two years ago did. I've been thinking about buying a new HD but I don't want this one to fail in a year as well. It is probably smart to note that both HDs that failed had the exact same symptoms, except for the fact that the first just slowly died... it never reported a hardware failure.
I'd like some advice on the best course of action. Should I just try to back up using CCC onto my other external and then buy a new internal HD? Or is there a better way to back up the data.
Hi-
Sounds like you have had some bad luck.
Except for the FreeAgent, the other drives should be chalked up to that.
With the FreeAgent, well, that should be chalked up to "expected sooner or later"....
Best course of action is to get your data as fast as is possible.
User files are the most important, as OS and applications may be reinstalled.
The fewer total files that you pull, the better your chances are with a failing drive.
Use whatever method that you have at hand.
Not sure if a cloning operation will work with a failing drive.
In the end, if it doesn't work, use Data Rescue (II or III).

Disk Utility Reporting Hardware Failure on Mac HD- Not Repairable
Hi! Looks like my hard drive is toast on my 24" aluminum case 24" imac. NOT under warranty although I bought it in Jan 09. DU reporting Mac HD in RED with message...'disk utility has detected hardware problem which cannot be repaired'. Ok. Will a simple hard drive replacement do the trick? Or, could there be additional grief? Thanks!
Do you have a backup of at least your personal data on the drive? If you do, you should try reformatting (erasing) the drive using Disk Utility, before giving up on it.
Restart from your Mac OS X installation disc, for the system you have installed currently; to do so, insert disc and restart with the C key held down. When you get to the first Installer screen (after language selection), go up to the menu bar. Under Utilities, select to run Disk Utility. In the sidebar, select the internal drive. On the +First Aid+ tab, run +Repair Disk+ (not +Repair Disk Permissions+ ). Do you still get that previous error at some point in this process? Do you get some other error that Disk Utility is not able to repair? -
Satellite L550 - SMART Reports HDD Failure Soon - What To Do?
Toshiba Satellite L550-113
On startup, I get a SMART message reporting HDD failure soon, and I'm requested to hit F1 before it will continue to boot to Windows (Vista 32 Bit).
The actual message from the Toshiba HDD Alert application is as follows:
Disk0
Your HDD has the SMART Predict Failure function which monitors the HDD operating status. Your HDD is experiencing a problem and SMART monitoring software predicts that the HDD will fail. Toshiba strongly recommends you create a back-up for your HDD data. Then contact an authorized service provider in order to check your drive and purchase a new replacement drive if necessary.
I've ordered a new HDD to replace the failing HDD (can't be bothered p*ssing about with RMA's and tech support).
However, is it possible to fix the old HDD once it's been removed? If I reformat it, will this do anything, or is it more serious than that? Thanks for the advice. I used the Win7 backup process using an external HDD, then installed the new HDD and restored the system. The built-in Toshiba backup system software was corrupted & missing, so Win7 backup was my best option.
The laptop belonged to a family member who passed away last year, so I've no idea if the warranty still existed. I needed to get the laptop up and running as soon as possible, so going through the RMA process with Toshiba was always going to take too long.
My question still stands... is there anything I can do with the old drive to get it out of SMART mode failure? -
Apple Hardware Test reports year as 4013 in diagnostics report? Why?
When I run AHT, I get "No Trouble Found". When I review the diagnostic report from About This Mac, I get "4013" as the year the test was run.
Does anyone have any insight?
For reference, I have a 15-inch, retina, 2.7 GHz, 16 GB RAM, 768 flash drive MacBook Pro notebook. I am running 10.8.2.
Thank you!
LukeDThanks, Sig.
The date is set properly to 2013. It only appears as 4013 in the diagnostics report for a Apple Hardware Test. Even the power-on self test appears as 2013. -

8Hi,
What is the symptom of the issue you encountered? The report shows there's a "known incompatibility with the hardware" and all "USB Suspend:USB Device not Entering Suspend" errors are caused by the prevention of Power Management (which is disabled due to
hardware issue) so have you made any hardware change rencently?
You can also manually check the Power Management setting, control panel\power options\chang plan settings\change advanced power settings, scroll down to PCI Express (check if you can set it to "Moderate Power Savings") and Process Power Management(should be
active).

Testing for Hardware Failures (Windows 8)
Hey guys!
I just want to post a quick "How To" guide for hardware issues that occur with windows 8 notebooks and how to test them.
HP Support Assistant and HP PC Diagnostics UEFI both provide access to tests that can check for hardware failures. HP Support Assistant is accessed through Windows and HP PC Diagnostics UEFI is accessed by pressing the F2 key while the computer is starting.
If anybody is detecting any type of hardware issues with there Win8 notebook follow thisDOCUMENT.
You will be able to run test like
HP Battery Check
HP Network Check
HP Hard Drive Check
HP Optical Drive Check
Run-In Test (quickly test the processor, memory, hard drive, battery, WLAN and PCI devices at the same time)
System Tune-Up (comprehensive test of the processor, memory, hard drive, battery, WLAN and PCI devices and video memory)
Hard Disk Test
Memory Test
You can also Testing using HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI
HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI enables you to test the main components on your computer using quick tests or longer, more comprehensive tests. You can use HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI even if the computer does not open to Windows.

Fatal Hardware failure - macintosh hd!!
Having a nightmare with a month old imac! It won't boot to desktop, just sits on the apple logo and pin wheel, Disk Utilty reports fatal hardware failure on the hard drive, but an extended hardware check reports no problems...?
Is there anything to try before taking it in for repair? There are files on there I'd really really like to recover, and was only half way through backing them up when it died!
Cheers for any pointers...Get Prosoft Data Rescue from http://www.prosofteng.com/
It may be able to recover the information off of it that you haven't already if you get another empty hard drive.
If it doesn't you may be forced to use a data recovery firm.
Good luck. -
Harddrive Hardware failure?
Macbook Pro will no longer boot from system drive. When booting I get the screen below and then can go no further. I use super duper and have a bootable clone on my external seagate via firewire and it is booting perfectly with no problem. I am wondering if my internal HD in my macbook has some sort of hardware failure. Since the bootable clone an identical copy and is booting perfectly this is the only thing i can figure. Anyone have any experience with this?
You're getting a kernel panic. Kernel panics are usually, but not always, caused by a hardware problem.
If you have the original OS X disks that came with the system, find the one that says 'AHT Version x.x' in small print on the label, insert and reboot holding the alt/option key down, choose the Apple hardware test, and when prompted choose the extended test. One of the tests it will do is on your hard drive.
Another program to test the hard drive is Smart Utility from http://www.volitans-software.com/smart_utility.php . It will give you a health assessment on your drive.
If you need to replace it, it's a 2.5" serial ATA (SATA) drive. Newegg.com and Amazon.com (Amazon proper, not 3rd party company's selling through Amazon) are two good sites with many user comments. One factor I look at is length of warranty. 5 years is about the max now. Avoid any with a 1 year warranty. -
MBA Hardware Failure--How Long to Get FedEx Return Label?
This is the first time I've ever had to return an Apple product.
Two days ago, the hardware failed on my 13" MBA. It was 4 days old at that time. After the hardware failure was confirmed by the tech people at Apple, I was told (by Sales Support) that a FedEx shipping lable would be emailed to me so that I could return it for a full refund. At that time, I was told that the label would be sent within 24 hours. It's now almost 48 hours and I haven't received the shipping label. I called Sales Support yesterday at the 30-hour point and was told that I would be receiving it "any time now."
Question: How long is normal in a case like this. I'm sitting on $1,300 of worthless hardware. If I call Sales Support again this afternoon, is there some other person I can ask to talk to if they can't help? Finally got the FedEx shipping label. I'm really disappointed because for the four days I had my Air, it was totally outstanding. I'll probably wait a month or so and re-order. There are enough reports in this forum about hardware problems (not booting any more, clickings sounds, etc) that I'm going to wait.
Everything was fine with mine until day four. I had just downloaded the lastest HP print drivers from the Apple Web site. My network throughput that morning was really slow on what is normally a very fast wireless and wired network. Then, while installing the new print drivers, the computer display gave me about 2 seconds of horizontal, colorful lines across the display and then the system froze. I booted immediately into single user mode to run fsck. The computer froze midway through the boot and I never got to the root> prompt. I've never had a Mac freeze during a single user boot.
I then tired booting from an external hard drive clone of my boot volume. I got the spinning gear for about 10 seconds and then the system shut off.
Later, I booted from the USB thumb drive supplied with the system and tried to reinstall the operating system. I tried Disk Utility first, but it said the drive could not be repaired. It froze about 5 minutes into reinstalling the operating system with garbled video right before the freeze. The system would never boot from the internal SSD. I sent it back today for a full refund.
It was so nice while it worked... -
Hello and
The other day my computer start to behave really wierd. It happened after i upgraded it with MSIs upgrading program. The laptop is barely 8-9 months old. Now i get the blue screen regardless what i want to do. Either if i would like to execute windows memory test or if i start to reinstall windows it allways stop the operation that i would like to perform by hitihng me with blue screen with PFn_list_missing. I am not newbie and I am sure i can fix most of problems i come accros but this must me some kind of hardware failure since performing any kind of operation is not possible. Well i tried everything and since nothing works I decided to post question for MSI suport team online and here is where actual problem occure. Now i wonder Is there anyone who works for MIS that checks posts we are posting to you @ suport site? Its been 5 days since i posted the request for reparation but still no reply? What i suspect is HDD ( i am allmost 100% certain) or memory failure and I dont want to screw up my 9 month old laptop by MSI only to check and ruin the warranty. What i have whish to do is blogg about how long time it takes for MSI to take sake in their own hands and repair my 8 month old laptop that also have extended warranty by MSI to 2 years? Now either someone will answer me or helpless the way I am I will blog about poor service provided by this HUGE company that stands for quality and great perfomance??? So will anyone from MSI take and answer to my requests in oreder to start repairing my expencive laptop that is broken after 8-9 average usage!!!
Thankfull for Your answer

She told me that in order for them to repair my computer she need me to report failure to You and then that You should be the one who order reparation from them for my coputer. Only and only then i will be able to send my notebook to reparation.
I must say its never ever been so complicated to repair computer that is less, I repeat less then one year old. I will for sure never again buy my product over the internet since i start to realize its allmost impossible to get response and get my computer fixed.
MSI asks me to contact people in sweden that repair their products Service in sweden asks me to contact you and ask you to issue reparation. What a service. I am not ping pong ball to be tossed arround that way. I hope You take care of Your customers better way. If this is best You guys can then i cant other then never ever go MSI way to be honest. Reading swedish forums plenty of people are having problems. I was proud about my laptop but since it only served me for less then one year I am not sure I could recommand it to other people as reliable product that keeps what it promises for money payed.
Now i am stuck with computer thats still covered by your warranty (proudly shown beneeth the keyboard " 2 years msi extended warranty") and I am not sure if its ever gonna get repaired.

Oracle DB offline after server reboot / hardware failure
Hi,
We have a server that crashed due to hardware failure and although brought back up OK Oracle DB's are no longer mounting. I am not a DBA but it looks bad to me and it seems there are no backups. Can anyone suggest a course of action? This is Oracle 11G XE running on Centos 6. I have put as much detail in as I can and could really do with some advice.

I have copied a backup script below that it turns out has been running every night at midnight. Where does this go, how do I know if it has worked and how can I use it to restore?
#!/bin/sh
# The script assumes that user can connect using "/ as sysdba" and Flash
# Recovery Area is enabled.
# =================
# Backup procedure
# =================
# For database in NoArchiveLog mode, database is shutdown and an offline
# backup is done;
# For database in Archive log mode, online backup is done.
# During the backup procedure, the script stores flash recovery area
# location by saving complete initialization parameter to
# ?/dbs/spfile2init.ora file. This will be used during restore operation
# to find Flash Recovery Area location. If this file is lost, then user must
# enter Flash Recovery Area location during restore operation.
# Two backups are maintained in Flash Recovery Area and the corresponding
# log files for last two backup job are saved in
# $HOME/oxe_backup_current.log and $HOME/oxe_backup_previous.log

I was directed to adobe to download CS4 on my new iMAC after hardware failure on PC. The valid CS4 serial number for the PC is now not recognized by Adobe, even though I downloaded all the software successfully on the new iMac.. They gave me a free 30 day trial on the new iMAC.........Does this mean I have to spend a lot of money to update and activate the latest CS release on the new machine ??????
Purple Lobster your Creative Suite 4 serial number is for Windows or Mac only. If you were previously using it on Windows then it is likely you have a Windows license. You can verify by checking your serial number at http://www.adobe.com/. You can find more details at Find your serial number quickly - http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/find-serial-number.html.
If you wish to run Adobe Creative software on your new iMac then I would recommend a Creative Cloud complete or single application membership. You can find more details at https://creative.adobe.com/plans. There is also a 30 day trial available for the Creative Cloud if you wish to evaluate the newest versions of the Adobe Creative applications. -
I bought the iphone 5 has not been one week do not understand why the home key of the time activities at stops working, not crash or fall. hope its help, probably due to software, not hardware failure, what do I do now?
Restore iPhone with current iTunes on computer. See if better. If still problem, make Genius reservation or set up Service and take or send to Apple for resolution. Of if easier for you, take receipt and iPhone, box and everything and return to where you bought it.

I suffered a hardware failure on my Dell desktop PC, and have moved to iMac. I own Adobe creative Suite 4 Design Premium for Windows. Can I transfer the license to my new iMAC without the huge expense of buying a new license or purchasing a month to month option?
you need a cross-grade, but adobe only offers free cross-grades for current releases, Order product | Platform, language swap
