Smart folder - different locations

Hello,
I'm just wondering, whether is possible (somehow) to create smart folder with 2 different locations of search.
For instance: I have Movies folder in my MBPro and also Movies folder in my external HDD (connected via USB or Airport extreme or Time Capsule as external HDD). I labeled all movies which I haven't seen yet with red color and all series with blue color.
Now I've created Smart folder which shows me every red labeled folders/files in Movies folder. But it is only Movies folder in my MBPro. But when I'm home and connected to external HDD (Time Capsule), I would love to see also the movies labeled with red (or blue in case of series) color in my smart folder.
I know I can create 2 smart folders, but it isn't so comfortable...

No, the search as you are describing it wouldn't work. Actually I was surprised that the search I tried the other day did work to exclude the contents of the sub-folder Computers in my Documents folder, trying to do that today doesn't work (I had thought maybe the "path" variable was being used in the raw query that is constructed by the search function, but I think the result I got before was just a happy accident). I'm afraid the only way to exclude the Downloads folder from a search of your home folder is to add it to the Privacy tab of the Spotlight pane in System Prefs.
So add the Downloads folder to Privacy, then navigate to your home folder, hit Command-F, leave the default criterion Kind is Any as is, click the + button and add "Last Modified date is after" and fill in the date. What you will get is a list of files and folders modified after the date you specify that are in any location in your home folder, except in the excluded folder. Your Downloads folder will no longer be searchable however.

  • Why can't smart folder search by aperture or fnumber?

I have tried to use smart folder to locate some of my images by using some attributes such as aperture and fnumber . But the smart folder returned none.
However I can use it to search by iso speed and exposure time.

Different cameras, at different settings, record different things to the metadata of the file. For instance, my Canon, old Nikon, and a Kodak all have the focal length in their metadata, none have the fnumber, and the Canon and Kodak both have the aperture, but the Nikon doesn't, while the Nikon and Kodak show the ISO while the Canon doesn't. To find out what is available to search with your camera's files, you'll need to either have an mdls utility, or use the mdls command in Terminal. To use it in Terminal:
    1. Launch Terminal (it is in your Utilities folder)
    2. Type:
    mdls
a space, then drag and drop a sample file into the Terminal window and hit return.
    3. The result will look something like this:
    -bash:~francine$ mdls /Users/francine/Pictures/Summer06/Mustang/IMG_2521.JPG
    /Users/francine/Pictures/ Summer06/Mustang/IMG_2521.JPG -------------

You can do a Spotlight search on any of the items listed. Thus, I could search and find this file with aperture and focal length, but not fnumber nor ISO.

  • Using Smart Folders to locate old files for archiving

This seems pretty straight forward, but I can't quite get it done.
I would like to have a smart folder that locates all folders, within a specific folder, that do not have any contents that have been modified within the last "x" months.
Simply put, I want all the folders in "This folder" that haven't been touched (or their contents) in 3 months. I just want the folders within that folder, not the nested ones farther down.
It's easy enough to create a folder that finds all files with contents that meet the criteria, but it brings up all the nested folders too.
If the search "other" selection dialog had an option called, "Containing folder is:", all my troubles would be solved.
If I could set this, I could locate just the folders I need to Archive, and all the nested folders wouldn't come up to muddle the search.
I tried to use the "Path" option, but it didn't work. The folder I'm searching is a mounted volume.
Does anybody have a way to accomplish this?

Problem is that if the contents of an upper level folder do not change - even if the contents of its subfolders change-the date modified on the upper folder does not necessarily change.
Also, sometimes just looking at a folder is enough to change it's Last Modified date (I noticed this in List View) probably because the view settings files in each folder are changed.
Other problem is that searches work down. I haven't yet seen one that can exclude subfolders because including them is usually the point of searching as opposed to just browsing the folder in the Finder window.
BTW-The 'Path' option is not supposed to work for searches according to the developer reference-don't know why they included it.

  • Place linked, any way to update several layers at once when changing location of source files? (i.e. moving source folder to different location/computer)

I have a PS file whic I wanna use as template for several works. I've got several layers containing external images which have been "placed linked" and which are organised in a single folder in my computer. I believe the links are saved as absolute therefore if I copy the PSD file and the source images folder into a different computer (or even if I move the source folder to a different location in the same computer) all smart objects have to be relinked one by one!!! any way to do it all at once (as I guess it is the case in Premiere and AE) assuming they're all in the same folder???
Also similar question when renaming all source images, any way PS can link to specific file and keep the link even if a name change happens?
If possible it'd be a huge time saver!
    Thanks

    anyone any help? Thx!

  • Mounting Documents, Music, Video and Picture folder to different location.

I would like to mount the documents, video, picture and music folders to a different location than \users\<username\. Anyone know how I can go about doing this? My goal is to have those folders default to folders on a shared partition on the drive. I am dual booting OS X and Vista and would like to share the folders I listed above so both operating systems can read and write to them. I have my drives setup as follows:
    Partition 1 OS X
    Partition 2 Vista OS
    Partition 3 Shared
I already have Vista defaulting to the correct folders on the shared drives but not sure how to get it done with OS X.
Thanks in advance for the help.

Moving the default folders may cause problems with installers and such that expect them to be where they normally are, and there may be various permissions issues. With that said, you should be able to create an alias or symbolic link to the desired folders and place them in your shared partition.

  • Today smart folder showing old email attachments

    Hi,
The "today" smart folder is very useful. But IMAP mail periodically decides to revisit every message it has ever seen, which apparently gives them all "today" tags according to the finder. So, just now my "today" folder contains 1,482 items (most of which I really have NOT worked on today!). These are all located in Library/Mail/IMAP...etc.
Is there a way to set a smart folder to exclude the Library directory? I know I can reserve it to search a single folder, but if I set it for the document folder, then it won't search the picture or applications folders. This folder must already exclude mail messages, since they don't appear; but attachments can be any kind of thing.
(Alternately, if there is some way to get IMAP to stop doing that.... It does not happen every day, but often enough to be annoying.)
    thanks for any hints.
    sarah

they are litterly old emails that i deleted months or even years ago... from different senders... but they are reappearing under a new sender/message.... thats really the only way i can describe it.. for example, this is just an example...
say 4 months ago i got an email from newegg and deleted it.... yesterday i got an email from my boss and when i opened it, it was the email i deleted 4 months ago from newegg... but when i go to my webmail it is the actual email from my boss...
another real example... i deleted an email from my preacher about 3 months ago and i receieved and email from my dad last week.. when i opened it, it was the old email from my preacher...
I hope that is a little clearer... these are all emails from mobile me.. i have all my mail FWDED to mobile me

  • Smart folder doesn't include all the files it should

I'm trying to set up a smart folder to show all .graffle (OmniGraffle) documents on my Mac modified within the last 7 days, but no matter what I do, there are many that don't show up.
Even if I just set up a simple query to show all .graffle files, it only shows me a few. There are whole directories it seems to overlook, but these directories aren't special in any way that I can think of. They just exist alongside the directories that ARE being indexed.
If I move the files into the other directory, they show up.
    Any ideas?

The simple query I'm working with is just to search "This Mac" for the string "graffle" appearing in the File Name
It just seems to be certain OmniGraffle files that don't show up, Lots of older graffle files do show up; these are all in a particular directory. The ones that I've attached to email messages show up (as being in my "mail" directory). It's just the ones I've created in the last 6 months or so - all for one particular project and located in the same directory - that don't show up.
Just now I did a test where I created 2 new files and saved them to different places. One in the problem directory and one in a different directory, and I couldn't duplicate the issue. I made a new smart folder, and both files showed up. This leads me to believe it's an issue with specific files, not a directory.
So I did a test where I opened one of the problem docs. I made one minor edit and closed the doc. Then I made a new smart folder, and it showed up.
Finally, I did a test where I opened up one of the problem docs and immediately closed it. Then I made a new smart folder, and it still did not show up.
Next, I'm going to compare the properties (get info) of a problem doc with one that shows up in the query.

  • Smart folder library

I am wondering if you can use a smart folder as the itunes library. I ask because I am trying to remove the need for 2 itunes library, because I have an external hard drive which i sometimes connect to directly, and sometimes connect through another computer. I created a smart folder for these different locations which should return the connected library. however this doesn't appear to be working. Any advise?

Interesting. It isn't on my Mac.
The thing is, if you add the user Library folder into the Spotlight Privacy list in System Preferences, it stops things like search working inside apps like Mail.
All I want to do is exclude the user Library folder from one Smart Folder in the Finder. Basically, I want to make a "Created Today" Smart Folder that doesn't show me files received or sent via Mail.

  • Smart Folder - Exclude Paths?

I am trying to create a "Smart Folder" similar to the existing "All Images" Smart Folder, except I would like to search my entire computer except for certain paths, such as, my applications folder and a few others.
I cant find a way to exclude paths from a search.
    Can anyone help please?

It's very clunky, but I guess you could temporarily move the undesired folders into the Privacy pane of Spotlight Preferences, and then later remove them from the list if you wanted to include those locations in a different Spotlight search. Since the folders involved are small, re-indexing them should be every fast.
(Perhaps not the best candidate for an elegance prize… )

  • Why is the contents of Safari's downloads folder different than the actual folder?

Why is the contents of Safari's downloads folder different than the actual folder that resides in my users folder?

Problem is if I delete that .plist I'll delete those downloads.  I'm still able to launch those downloads from that location so that tells that file is probably not corrupted. I need to be able to located that folder and transfer the downloads from it before I do anything like this.  So that begs the question, where is that folder located?  When I do a folder search I'm taken to a Downloads folder, but it's not the one that is showing up from within Safari as it's contents are too different.

  • Importing to a Smart Folder

I created my 1st Smart Folder just moments ago. And I quickly learned how to get to the Filter HUD. But after setting filter preferences, how does a person Import images that match the Filter?
    1) Is the process automatice.
    2) If not, can you grab matching images from in many different folders on an external HD, or do you have to navigate to each folder, open it and then Import the images sequentially? That would be a lot of work.   :-(

The smart folders in Aperture only relate to images, that already have been imported to Aperture.
Import all folders with images that you want to maintain in your Aperture library; then your smart folders in the library will structure and filter them.
If you need smart searches to find the image files that you want to import to your library, use smart folders in the Finder.
Open a Finder window and press ⌘F, then press the "+" button to add search rules, for example to find all "jpeg" images taken in the last 30 days, you could search like this:
Then select all images that have been found and copy or drag them to a folder or directly into Aperture's import window.

  • Saving screenshots to a different location?

Somewhere, there is a preference to set the default location to save screenshots... I can't find it now! I have one of my machines set to save screenshots to a folder on my desktop, so I know this is possible. But I can't seem to find that preference on a second machine. I thought it was a preference setting in Cocktail, but it isn't there.
Can anyone tell me where to set the default location for saving screenshots? I need to set it to a folder instead of Mac OS's default of the Desktop.
    Thanks!

I would love to know how to set a different location. How do you do this in Leopard and Snow Leopard?

  • What is the best way to work on the same InDesign file in different locations?

I'm the creative director for an in-house creative department. We produce 37 catalogs and a multitude of print and electronic advertising each year, plus a variety of other items. Our problem is that we have two locations. In the current set-up, if I want someone at one location to work on a project but the files are at the other location, I have someone at the one location package all the materials involved with that project and either upload them to DropBox or copy them to an external drive and ship it. Not very efficient.
We have servers at both locations but there are different files at each location. I'm able to remote from my computer into a computer at the other location, but if everyone were to do that we would need double the number of CC subscriptions and computers, and it would bog down the internet connection that the entire company uses. I'm also connected to the server at the other location (again, over the internet) and have opened InDesign files that reside on the server there and tried to work on them here (over the internet) but that is much slower than remoting in.
The only way I can think of to alleviate this problem is to run duplicate servers at each location, but this would be an update and back-up nightmare (unless I'm missing something). Is anyone operating this same way and, if so, how are you dealing with it?
We can't be the only company that works like this. Maybe I'm just missing something.
    Thanks,
    Lloyd

One tiny thing bothers me about your setup. And you said it above, you would need double the number of CC subscriptions and computers. Are you using two people to access under the same CC subscription. Even if they are working in two different time zones, it is technically violating the rules and spirit of the rules of being able to install on two machines at the same time.
You're allowed to install for two machines for one person working at the office and then at home. One person wouldn't be in two different locations at the same time.
Meanwhile, regards your problem, I remember reading about a system many years ago that was pretty simple. It was based on an old newspaper/magaizine system of "who has the folder." (Created before computers) In the old days, if someone was working on a file, they left a folder with their name in its place.
In the computer age, one person, working on a file, would move it to their desktop. Then, they would leave an empty folder with that document's name where it had been as well as their initials. So if I took "Shoes and Socks Fall 2015.indd" out, I would leave a folder named "Shoes and Socks Fall 2015_smsc" in its place.
And if it was necessary for me to have the images, I would make a copy of them onto my machine so I wouldn't tax the network. Then when I was finished, I would copy the file back to the server. The links should show up. If not, we could relink later.
With the empty folder on the server, anyone could tell who is working on a project. So if they were late getting it back, you could email them.
It relies on the people being disciplined enough to make the folders, move the docs, etc. But since you've ruled out all the systems for companies with dumb employees, you're going to have to make them follow the rules.

  • How do I move a subfolder of pic files to its parent file in a different location?

How do I move 37 picture files in a sub folder to a parent folder in a different location?

In the library select the subfolder in the left hand panel; then select the 37 thumbnails either using shift-click or ctrl+click on individual files if they are not consecutive.
When all 37 are highlighted, click in the center of one thumbnail and drag and drop to the parent folder in the left hand panel.
The files will also be moved on your hard drive and you should see a pop-up message. Click the move button to complete.
