Smart Folder Question

Hello People,
I am trying to do something fairly basic with a Smart Folder but it's not working and I must be doing something wrong, here's the deal:
I have an email account called [email protected], where our software sends us error reports when the users says "report to developer". So I've got lots of error reports. (Well not that many, but I've got quite a lot)
I'd like to create a smart folder that says:
IS IN MAILBOX "XXXXX"
AND
ENTIRE MESSAGE -> DOES NOT CONTAIN "a string i'd like to place like this one".
In theory this seems easy, but in practice is not working. I seems as if the "Contains, Does Not Contain, Begins with, etc." is always behaving like "Contains".
I've placed a screnshot that shows exactly that. If you take a look at it, the message shown has exactly that string on the first line "while establishing a connection".

Could it be possible that "Entire Message" doesn't search message text?
Thanks

Well, it is not just you - I have just tried a couple of smart mailboxes, and "does not contain" produces the same results as "contains". As far as I can see contains produces correct results.
Hhmmmm is this a bug or something we're not doing "right"?
By the way, thank you for trying

  • Simple smart folder question

So this is what I want to do...
Every time a imagine (png, jpg, gif, whatever) gets placed on my desktop i want it to instead go to a smart folder on my desktop called "random images" or whatever. for the life of me i can't seem to figure out how to do this relatively simple thing. any help would be appreciated.

I have all my Internet applications set so that the things they download all go to the same folder, called Downloads, at the root level of my drive. Just as in Safari they all have preferences you can set about where you want their downloaded items to go. If you want to further sort things you'll need to investigate Applesript, write a folder action script that automatically puts downloaded images into a sub-folder, and then attach the folder action to the Downloads folder. Of course this might not work that great for a mail application....it could result in not seeing any attached images in the body of the email.

  • If i delete a file from a smart folder is it deleted from the hard drive?

I've got a late 2011 17" MacBook Pro with a 750 GB harddrive. I'm trying to free up space by deleting movie files. I spoke with tech support about this, and they suggested creating a smart folder of all my movie files in order to find them and delte them. I did this and deleted many files, but when I open system information to check on the amount of hard drive space, I'm still seeing the same amount of hard drive space dedicated to movies.
If I make a smart folder and delete files in that, am I really deleting them from my hard drive or just from the smart folder?

What files are stored automatically by Time Machine?  I thought Time Machine pretty much saved everything on my hard drive to my external hard drive.  If that is the case, wouldn't my music files and picture files be on Time Machine (via my external hard drive)?
Time Machine does backup almost all files on your hard drive, unless you have chosen to exclude them. There are a few exceptions, but nothing you should worry about. Your music and photos should be there, but Time Machine will not backup your iPhoto library if iPhoto is open.
Also, are the photos from iPhoto automatically stored on my external hard drive via Time Machine?  If so, can I delete the pictures from iPhoto without deleting them from the external hard drive?
Yes to both questions, with the above cavat that Time Machine won't backup the library if iPhoto is open.
I notice that it takes iPhoto quite a while to load, and if deleting those photos would allow it to load quicker I would delete them (providing they would remain on the external hard drive.
I only have a few pictures in iPhoto, compared to my wife's 3,500+, and my iPhoto doesn't load appreciably faster that her's does even though I have a faster computer. In my opinion, it isn't worth the effort it would take to delete them for such a small gain.
You should have at least 2 complete backups to try to make sure you won't lose any data. Hard drives do fail and/or files can become corrupted. Time Machine can back up to more than one external hard drive or you can use a cloning program.

  • If I create a smart folder in iPhoto, and then delete it, are the pictures gone?

I am still trying to figure iPhoto out. I just created a "Smart Folder" and it imported some of my photos. I decided to delete that folder. Did that delete the pictures or are they still somewhere else in iPhoto or on my computer? Thanks!

    several issues with your question
1 - there is no such thing as a smart folder in iPhoto
2 - folders in iPhoto can not hold photos and it is not possile to import photos into them
3 - there are smart albums - deleting a smart album has no effect on the photos - the "contents" of the smart album are simply pointers to the photos in your library that meet the criteria - deleting the album has no effect on the photos themselves
4 - as the contents of a smart album is the photos that meets the criteria it is no possible to import photo into a smart album
5 - it is helpful to know what version of iPhoto you have
So please ask with correct terms since we can not see you or your computer and can only help based on wha tyou tell us

  • Can't delete smart folder

Simple question: How do I get rid of a smart folder? I created one which I no longer need but it keeps coming back to the finder every time I trash it. I move it to the trash, empty the trash, and when I re-open the finder, there it is again.

  • Smart folder view options

When is apple going to fix Smart Folder List View Options so that we can sort by Size etc.....?

Yeah, when is Apple going to fix this? Right now, smart folders have the name of the item, which is great. They have the kind of the item, which is great. Unfortunately, the ONLY other column is Last Opened, and I have never found a use for that. It tells me nothing about the file in question.
When I try to change the columns using Command-J, the Finder says that there are no options. The interface is almost there, but for now, smart folders are useless.
Also, why won't the Open/Save dialog show the smart folders? It has those weird "media" searches, but I can't use the useful searches that I already have, even in an Open Dialog.

  • Address Book - smart folder - need to delete

I have created a smart folder that for some reson lock up my Address Book when ever I click on it (applicaton not responding and have to force quit).  How can I delete the the smart folder in question.  If I click on it the program immediately freezes.
I do have several days of time machine backups I could retore from.  I am also synced to mobil me and my iphone.
What and where is the file I would need to replace to remove the last added smart folder?
    Thanks,

    You might want to try:
Back up your address book (File -> Export)
    exiting the Address Book
Going to your Library/Application Support/AddressBook directory (in Finder, Go -> Go to folder -> ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook
Moving the AddressBook-v22 to your desktop
    Open the Metadata directory
Use the finder's search feature to search in that directory for "Group"
You should find files with names that contain "ABSmartGroup" - move these to your desktop
    Restart Address Book
That should remove them, but don't hold me to it (make sure you have backups).  This is more mucking with the Address Book than I'd like to do.  If the Address Book starts acting weird, you can move these files back to the original location.

  • Copy files to Smart Folder

I have created a Smart Folder but cannot drag/drop files to that Smart Folder.
    What am I doing wrong?

A Smart Folder is not a place, it's a list. It's the answer to question. For instance: What files were modified yesterday? Or what files have a 'work' comment in the Spotlight Comments? To get a file listed in a Smart Folder make sure it fits the answer to the question...

  • Smart folder not searching external HDD connected to Airport Extreme

I have bunch of movie files (mp4 format) on external HDD connected to the new Airport Extreme station. When I create a smart folder on either one of the machines on my local network, the smart folder would not search at all through the HDD connected to the Airport Extreme.
I have another HDD connected directly to my PowerMacG5Quad and smart folders successfuly searches through that drive.
However, when I ask for any type of search (i.e. any kind of files) located on a networked external HDD, smart folders acts is if the networked drive is not even there.
Obviously, my purpose here is to have the difference machines access (RSS style) all the movies files located on the networked HDD.
Is it some permission in Airport Extreme?

    Does this help?

  • Smart folder too long!

    Hi there
I have had to create a smart folder to filter what goes on my ipod as the library is too big for the ipod drive
I have been doing this for a few months and have now found that the window where you enter the variables is too big! It won't scroll down to the older variables and can't be resized.
So the question is, how can I view all the variables in my smart playlist?
    cheers

The conditions editing box does not have scroll bars so there is no way to scroll down to see items off screen. The only way to get to them is to delete enough conditions that the bottom of the edit window comes into view.
The best way around this problem is two use three smart playlists. One has conditions 1 - 20, the second with conditions 21 - 40, and the third selects playlist 1 and playlist 2.
If you need to limit the number of tracks, then you might want to use a smart playlist to do the limiting. Say you have created playlists 1 and 2 as above. Playlist 3 could then select playlist 1 and playlist 2 and could then be set to "Limit to 20 GB selected by [your choice]". I put in 20 GB as an example, you would put in the appropriate limiting size.

  • Folder + Question Mark : Still there after zeroing and reinstalling.

My MacBook Pro decided it didn't want to boot yesterday after a crash due to low battery on start up. Tried resetting PRAM, ran disk repair (had a couple issues there), finally just zeroed the drive and reinstalled the OS (Tiger factory discs). After reinstalling, the computer is still giving me the folder + question mark icon. I can boot onto the CD just fine every time, it sees the drive and tells me there are no errors when repairing it (does seem to hang on the final 'mounting drive' stage though). Still can't boot into the OS though.
    Hoping someone has an idea.
    Thanks!

When you go to Disk Utility, is SMART verified? Have you run the extended version of the Apple Hardware test?
I had a similar problem with a PowerMac G4, and the cause was a failing hard drive. If you do manage to boot from your boot drive, download and run SMART Utility:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/systemdiskutilities/smartutility.html
You can download the demo and run it several times for free. It is more critical than Disk Utility is, and can detect impending hard drive failure sooner. It could be your hard drive is headed south, especially if it is the original.
    Good luck!

  • Smart Folder in Logic?

    Hi everybody!
Just a simple question: why don't smart folders work in Logic? Is there a workaround about that?
I have a a smart folder with all my current LogicPro Songs, which obviously works fine in the finder, but when I click on it in the Logic browser, nothing shows up. What's up with that?
    Thanks in advance!

Sorry guys, I just needed to wait longer to get the files. I'm on a dual 2.5Ghz with 8GB of ram and Spotlight is still pretty slow... but anyway, that answers my question!

  • White screen with a flashing folder & question mark

My IMac froze today and when I turned it off and then back on, it just sticks on a white screen with a flashing folder & question mark...  Help?

Reinstall Snow Leopard without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.
    Reinstalling Lion Without the Installer
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alterhatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.
