Smart Folder That Includes iCloud Drive?

How can you make a Saved Search (aka a Smart Folder) in Finder, that includes (as in, looks for) files stored in your iCloud Drive? Is this even possible?

start a regular finder search on the external drive. put the parameters you want and when it's set up as you like it click "save" in the upper right corner, right below the search box.

  • How to create Smart Folder that limits search to a specific folder or drive

I've been playing with Smart Folders in Leopard 10.5.5. I would like to create a smart folder that limit the search to only a specific folder where I keep all of my work related files. I cannot figure a way how to do this.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.
    Bud James

1.) Performed Archive and Install. This did not correct the problem.
2.) Performed clean install to new hard drive. This corrected the problem.
3.) Performed a user migration (to the fresh new OS and new HD) using the migration utility and the problem returned.
So it seems pretty clear that there is something related to my user identity that is causing the problem. I called Apple tech support but they were not able to resolve the problem.
Sure, I can just create a new user and spend the next week or so reinstalling a bunch of software...but certainly based on the description of the problem (and the trouble shooting that I have already performed) someone at Apple should be able to pinpoint what files I need to delete or replace to correct this problem.

  • How to create a smart folder that only selects from a specific directory?

I am trying to create a smart folder that lists all my iPhoto original content in the last few months. I want this so that my wife can connect into the smart folder over the LAN when copying specific photos to her PC.
I am have trouble working out how to restrict the search to only those files that exists in the iPhoto directory. When I look at info for a photo is states "Where: /Users/Shared/iPhoto Library/iPhoto Library/Data/2009/....etc etc".
However if I add an filter for "Where from" begins with "/Users/Shared/... etc etc" it returns nothing. Is there a way to do this?

    Find the iPhoto library file.
Right click -> Show package contents.
    Double click the Originals folder.
Type anything in the Search box at the top of the Finder window.
In the top of the Finder window, click "Originals".
Click the + (plus) sign next to Save.
    Select Kind is Image.
Click the + (plus) sign again.
Select *Created date* is *within last 3 months* (or whatever you want).
Go to the search box and delete what you typed. Don't hit the X to delete the search text.
    Now save the smart search.
This is saved in ~\Library\Saved searches. Copy or move it to the desktop where your wife can get access to it.

  • Smart Folder that shows the biggest folders?

    Hi all,
I want to know which folders on my harddrive are the biggest in size.
Thus, I made a new smart folder with the criteria
    Kind = Folders and
    Size Greater than 200 MB
    The result is empty.
There are, however, folders that contain 200 MB and more on my harddisk which can be proven easily by activating the "Calculate all size" option in the View options (Command-J).
    What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks,
    Stefan.

The problem is that when you select the Size option, what is REALLY being used is a metadata attribute called "kMDItemFSSize"--which seems to refer to File Size, an attribute of files, but not a metadata attribute that is listed for folders. There is no clue that it doesn't apply to folders, but it doesn't. You could probably make an Automator action to do what you want, but WhatSize probably does it better any way.

  • How can I create a smart folder that only searches one event?

Is it possible to create a smart album but have it not search my entire library, but only a certain event?
I have created a smart album to find unnamed faces, but I have many old pictures in my library with strangers in them so the smart album ends up quite large. If I could apply the rules of the smart album to only one event at a time I could find the photos i need with no faces recognized in them easier right after I import them.
Or conversely, is there a fast way to delete all the unnamed faces boxes for all my pictures with strangers in them- there must be a faster way than going through and clicking the 'X' on each individual face.
    Thanks!

Make the criteria: Event Contains XXXXXXX and Faces is unnamed.  That will search only that Event.

  • How do I make a Smart Folder that targets search in a specific location...

...that is NOT my Home folder or "This Mac"?
    Beavis2084

Navigate to the folder you want to search in the Finder. Hit Command-F and then select the folder you are in--it will be right next to This Mac (and why This Mac is the default rather than the folder you invoke the search in is beyond me). You can only have one search location, unlike Tiger where you could do a search on multiple locations. And why they left that out I'll also never know.

  • Where is the iCloud Drive app icon (folder) in iOS 8? Like the one the show on their website.

I am running Yosemite on my Macs and updated to ios8 on all of my iPads and iPhone. Yet, I have found no way to access my iCloud Drive folder on the mobile devices. The Apple website for iCloud clearly shows iOS devices viewing an iCloud drive folder with end user customized sub-folders. I called tech support and they agreed that that's what the website was showing but informed me that as iCloud Drive and ios8 are so new they did not know yet how to set them up. I arrange my files by project not program and I need to view PDFs and other non iWork's files. Does anyone out there have a clue? Thank you.

I'm not using it, but my understanding is that you can only access iCloud Drive documents on an iOS device from within an app that is iCloud Drive compatible.  At least at the present time, there isn't an iCloud Drive app for an iOS device that provides general access to documents.  See http://www.imore.com/icloud-drive-clearing-up-confusion.

  • No delete options of an app folder in iCloud Drive

I've install recently a File Manager app (File Hub), that created a folder in my iCloud Drive. I've deleted the app but the folder remains in iCloud Drive and the bin stays grey when the folder is selected.
    Any ideas?

I had the same issue because my multiple Readdle Scanner Pro files became inaccessible on iCloud (iPad Air and iPhone 6+).
    1. Go to Settings-->General-->Usage
    2. Select Manage Storage on "Storage" first, and then find and delete Scanner Pro (or any file). Sometimes you have to select "edit" first on the top right corner.
    3. Repeat for iCloud Storage
    4. Then, turn off your wifi and turn off and on the device (to clear cache). Sometimes you may have to reset network settings to eliminate any cache connections between iCloud Servers and background syncing on the iOS device.
    5. Reinstall the App, and then select iCloud and iCloud Drive.
This worked for me. I am not sure how to make the Scanner ".psdoc" file format re-readable by the iOS devices, once uploaded.

    Hello Sunil Gubbi,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
From your post I understand that you'd like to know on how to access your files on iCloud Drive.  Please take a look at the information below on how to access the files.
You can access your files in iCloud Drive any of these ways:
Using any supported web browser, you can go to iCloud Drive or iWork for iCloud beta at iCloud.com. In iWork for iCloud beta, you can find your Pages, Numbers, and Keynote files.
On your Mac with OS X Yosemite, you can go to iCloud Drive in Finder.
On your PC with Windows 7 or later and iCloud for Windows 4.0, you can go to iCloud Drive in File Explorer.
On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 8, you can access your files from Apple apps like Pages, Numbers, and Keynote, or any apps that support iCloud Drive.

  • Access iCloud Drive files without internet connection? Backups?

So, if I want to put files in iCloud Drive, the process is simple, but the process MOVES the files out of my Documents folder to a hidden location in my local device's file system? (~/Library/Mobile Documents). I really can't access MY documents shared with iCloud any more unless I'm online? Plus, even if I can figure out how to see my documents in the Mobile Documents folder, they're now arranged by application, and not by the folder system I've set up over 20 years of use? Can I backup my files hosted on iCloud? Is iCloud Drive a serious cloud document host solution or just a trap for noobs?

Set the Finder Sidebar preferences so that the iCloud drive is included in the Favorites section of the Finder sidebar:

  • Creating a smart folder with Terminal?

What I'm trying to do might not be possible, which wouldn't surprise me at all. What I'd like to do is one of the following:
    1. Create a smart folder that contains everything in the "/" folder.
    2. Create a smart folder that is populated with every volume currently mounted on my Mac.
Essentially what I'm hoping to do is create a smart folder I can then use as a stack that would contain all the volumes currently located on my Mac. The only solution I've found so far for this is to use the /Volumes/ folder but this doesn't suit my needs as occasionally I get double icons for drives (1 being the alias the second being a private folder). Also it fails aesthetically which is part of the reason I'm doing this in the first place.
If anyone could recommend a solution that'd be great. I figured Terminal was my best bet, unfortunately my knowledge of this form of coding is non-existent and no amount of Google searches could help me.

I don't see how either item on your wish list can be satisfied by any of this "smart" stuff. The smart searches/folders are based on queries against the same metadata used by Spotlight - and that doesn't even look at / or /Volumes. Even if the info were available, is it up-to-the-minute enough to really be usable?
If you want to examine the built-in searches as a guide, you'll find them in:
    /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/Resources/CannedSearches
Note that each of the items therein is a package, so you'll have to drill a bit deeper to get to the query file. I found that Property List Editor from XTools was a good way to get a structured view of them.

  • How do I retrieve a file typed on iCloud online (Pre iCloud Drive) once I have upgraded to iCloud Drive?

    Hello all,
My friend has typed his essay on iWork for iCloud on a PC, and then he upgraded his account to iCloud Drive, and he has no access to his essay anymore since it says that because you're account is upgraded you cannot access your files on iWork for iCloud until later this fall. Apparently it hasn't synced to any of his iOS 7 devices, is there any way to retrieve it? He has a Mac also running 10.10 Yosemite, and an iPhone running iOS 8.
If you have any ideas, please don't hesitate to reply as his essay is due soon.
    Thanks,
    Chro

Your friend is using unfinished, beta Apple software (including iCloud Drive). We cannot discuss beta Apple software here due to requirements of that beta software agreement, and the terms of use for this open Apple Support Community. There are specific non-public forums explicitly for Yosemite and/or IOS 8 beta programs. Use those.
No one in their right mind would attempt to depend on any beta software solutions to create a critical document and expect to meet a due date. Too many people have been bitten when things get borked.

  • I see the iCloud Drive icon but can't use it

When I open the Finder window (I think that's what it's called), I see the icon and words for iCloud Drive. Thinking this was like Dropbox, I click on it, and nothing happens. I've upgraded to Yosemite on my iMac, I've been on iOS8 for some time, so I thought this was the big deal. Apple was offering a drive like Dropbox, but it might as well be on Mars. I can't get it to show me anything. I tried dropping a folder into it (iCloud Drive), but I don't see that anything really happened. And I supposed I've shown my ignorance here.
It seems to work just like the old iCloud. You have to go in either through the browser or through an iCloud-compatible app.
So…why show the icon if it's essentially useless?
Yosemite/iCloud wizards, enlighten me. I spent virtually all night last night upgrading to Yosemite. So far all I notice is that things look different. Notifications are pretty cool and improved, but the stellar iCloud Drive features don't seem to be here.

    Yes, restarting fixed it.
Thanks, Jean Shea,Scott and randers4 for your help.

  • How to view and or delete smart folder in finder sidebar

Sounds easy, but I am having a problem. I recently had my hard drive replaced at the genius bar. I have a smart File on the finder side bar that I can not open or delete. When I click on the file I get the message "the volume for (name of file) cannot be found. I tried using both "spotlight" & "the finder go to" locate this smart folder to no avail. I cannot remember when I created this file but I had labeled it appleworks 6 manual.. I don't ever remember using this smart file, I may have just created it without ever putting anything in it. So how do I open it or just plain delete it. I can remove it from the side board but it just comes back. I also went to /volumes which took me to the hard drive, but when I looked at all the files I couldn't find a smart file with this label. Any suggestion? Thanks Paula

I made another smart folder. I wanted to see if I could get the options with the control key. My test folder worked fine and I was able to get the options. I could delete the test folder without any problems. If it is that I have an Appleworks manual stored in an image file, then how could I find the image file? And if I did find it, what would I do to it, so I could delete this smart folder that I set up? I did a spotlight search for image file, but I couldn't find anything. I also searched appleworks manual and I did find a "getting started with appleworks 6 document" with an path of '/application/appleworks (U.S. English) Applework 6 documentation ... when I click on it it opens in preview.. but that manual is stored in my appleworks in applications, so I don't think it is related to the smart folder in the finder sidebar. If I did manage to close or delete the image file that was related to this folder, does that mean I'm just stick with this smart folder that I can't delete on my finder sidebar?
