Smart Folders are screwed for a start!

So, I had leopard beta (bag of nails) and Mail packed in.. So when Leopard went RC I bought it and upgraded, everything is sweet, mail came back to life and decided its indexes were a mess and sorted them.
I have 2 mailboxes:-
1 Exchange
1 Mac.com mail
2 things are happening, when I click on INBOX, I have always been able to see mail aggregated from both mailboxes, but I see nothing now.. (it is fine if I click on the individual mailboxes)
The second thing, Smart folders don't work, they display nothing... sometimes when I close mail and open it again, I can see the filtered mail for a split second before its gone!
Any Ideas?

I guess it is a bug in Mail.app in Leopard and the two conditions have been inverted.
Are you sure?
I never used a Leopard Beta, just "Archive & Install" to upgrade from 10.4.10, and i cleaned out email so i'm using an entirely new setup.
When i create a smart mailbox with several rules, of which ANY should match, i get zero content. I also get zero content with it set to match ALL, which is likely correct.
If i give the smart mailbox only a single rule to match, presto, i get 100+ results! I did some further tests and for me ALL works correctly, but ANY is buggered!

  • Smart Folders for Desktop Background

I'm trying to take a batch of pictures and isolate them out in a smart folder for display as rotating desktop backgrounds. I've created a Smart Folder with the criteria that results in only the files I want. Then, I attempted to add this smart folder to the Desktop pane (in System Preferences). Instead, it added the folder it sits within, and will not display the desired photos. Is a smart folder not smart enough for this use?

Thanks, just checking, but to me, that seems like a bug - the Smart Folders are promoted as "smart" replacements to folders (of course, only when working on Leopard). If they cannot accomplish tasks such as this, then they continue to be of limited use to me. Here's to hoping their usefulness rises in the Snow Leopard.

  • Exchange 2013 public folders are sending read receipts for items viewed in public folders

We have Exchange 2013 with public folders.  These public folders are used for a large amount of shared contacts.  When a user goes into the public folders and double clicks on a contact to view it, Exchange dispatches a read receipt to all users
that are configured as publishing editors to notify them that a certain contact was read.  How do I disable this option?

    hi again dear.. :)
"At first, I would like to say the
read Receipt is not sent out by the device, it is sent out by the Exchange server. This is how it works and what happens:
    1.
    E-mail with request for send
    receipt is received on the Exchange server;
    2.
E-mail is synchronized with Windows Mobile based device using Exchange
    ActiveSync;
    3.
    When e-mail is
    read on Windows Mobile based device the read status is synchronized back to the Exchange server;
    4.
The Exchange server creates and sends out the
    Read Receipt when receiving the Read status update from the device;
The above is how this is implemented and there is no functionality which allows preventing this from occurring on the Mobile device.
It seems that there is an alternative method to disable RR using transport rules. However, it will at the risk of the filtering out other messages
    with the same subject.
Towards the third party mobile clients that support RR and DR, you might consider using Flexmail 4.11. It’s impossible to deactivate ActiveSync
    RRs in Exchange server 2007/2010."
    also
One way to stop read receipts being triggered through client side configuration on the mobile is to use the option "Don't Mark Read on server".
I have tested this successfully using this option in the TouchDown mail client on Android.
Not sure if the standard or other mail clients do support this option, TouchDown certainly does and it works.
The side effect obviously is, that the read status isn't synced back to Exchange anymore:"
hope now i r clear... one way or the other... you need to send a feed back or define a transport rule... but that again may create problem with the same subject :)

  • My smart folders aren't so smart anymore

I have installed Leopard and my mail program works fine except that all of my smart folders are empty. I have checked the folder settings and they are the same as before, and I know the emails are in there but for some reason the smart folders are not gathering them up.

I had exactly the same problem. I found that I had an inactive mail account configured. I deleted that account and it started working again. I'm not sure if it was because I had two mailboxes, or because I had one inactive. Can you guys try that out? Maybe it is because of an inactive account?
OK that worked once, but when I closed and reopened the "smart" mailbox, it disappeared again.

  • Mail Smart Folders across accounts / between Macs

OS X Mail Smart Folders are very useful, but I have one problem:
My "Unread" folder between accounts and Macs has two criteria: Unread, plus on one account, not in a certain Inbox. Now, the mail account that I use for that 2nd criteria is only set up for use on one account. I have 2 accounts on my Mac Pro and 1 account on my MBP. When I check my Mail Unread folder on the other account and other Mac, the Unread folder syncs across iCloud, but since that email account I use for the 2nd criteria is not set up (active) on the other account / Mac, the Unread folder essentially breaks. If I edit it, then it breaks on the other user account where that 2nd criteria is effective.
Does that make sense? Anyone else having iCloud Mail Smart Folder sync issues across accounts / Macs?
Running OS X Yosemite all up to date on everything.

iCloud does not support or sync Smart Mailboxes or local folders. You can create mailboxes at the iCloud.com site that will be IMAP and show in the Mail sidebar under the iCloud folder. Those will show up on all devices.
Other than that, iCloud will only sync Mail's main mailboxes (default mailboxes).
    In Addition to better explain:
Local folders under On My Mac are folders only located on the computer. They are not part of any IMAP or Exchange account.
Smart Mailboxes are for the most part just search engines. Messages are not stored in those, but they merely point to messages which actually reside in the original mailbox where they are stored.

  • Can Smart Folders include "all" or "any" criteria?

    Hi there everybody,
A question for you all. When I create a smart folder it uses the criteria I choose and asumes that I want to find files/images, etc. that meet "all" of the criteria (for example Mail Smart mailboxes can be created that meet "any" criteria you choose, thereby broadening your search, instead of "all" criteria that limits your search).
Since Finder's Smart Folders create a search based on "all" criteria, it limits my search, but I want to broaden my search to include other criteria (meets "any" of my chosen criteria, or meets this "or" that criteria). Can I do this with Smart Folders?
Also, can I tell a Smart Folder to grab a Smart Mailbox and include it in my Smart Folder search?
My ultimate goal is to use Tiger to create a project folder with contacts, calendars, emails and files associated together. Then there would be no need to worry about more software, worries of integration with iApps, etc.
Thanks everybody. Hope this generates good discussion.

No. Smart Folders are very simple by design.
You will need to wait for a new version of the OS to allow that functionality or access the index with another tool to do more advanced boolean searches.

  • Smart Folders and Spotlight

Previous discussions on this forum regarding Spotlight's inconsistent ability to find files caused me to disable Spotlight (using Spotless) and use Easy Find to find things.
No one warned me that disabling Spotlight would interfere with smart folders. I use smart folders in Mail, iTunes and elsewhwere. At first I couldn't figure out why they weren't working right.
It is not intuitively obvious that smart folders are basically saved Spotlight searches. Participants on this forum should know.
I've re-enabled Spotlight, I force a re-index now and then, and have Easy Find ready for backup use, if Spotlight can't find something.
That way, most of the time, smart folders are correct, or nearly so.
    Just my .00000002 cents worth.

I have never had any need to "save my searches". Why on earth would I want to do that?
Consider the fllowing scenario: a disabled person to be cared for, rich and varied sources of information via articles, emails and even images. Literally thousands of documents. Few are about a single subject, such as, say a particular medication, but many refer and discuss the medication inter alia. Do a search based on the name of the medicine. Save it. Everytime the medicine is mentioned in a new article or email, that gets added to that folder. Now search for Physiotherapy. Many of the same articles and emails, but in a different folder.
That's why on earth I would want to save a search. And have many such. Invaluable.
I realise that Spotlight is not for you, but for some of us it's a boon.

  • Smart Folders - None/Any/All tests missing?

I see that some of the 'canned' smart folders have the ability to say -
'None/Any/All of the following are true'
which is good and allows the standard 'Today' to exclude folders. However there seems to be nowhere in the Smart Folder setup GUI where mortals can generate these tests. I've clicked on 'Other' when looking for a test and there appears to be nothing obvious that might generate a set of nested tests.
    Am I missing something?
Is this something that's died and the canned smart folders are essentially 'legacy'?
Or is there some magic flag to turn on in com.apple.finder.plist to allow me to do this?

You need the secret keyboard and mouse combo decoder ring....
No, really, you do! When you bring up the Find window, notice that at the end of the criteria line there are the little bitty + and - buttons, to get the boolean options you hold the Option key and click on the appropriate button.

  • Smart folders just refuse to work

hi i cannot get anything to show in smart folders/web gallerys, i have tried a simple star rating, and keywords, both cases knowing there are not too many of either so its not a problem dues to 1000s of pics.

As you are probably aware, smart folders are "aware" of the library structure...if you're attempting to build one in a library folder where there are NONE of the target images, you'll get this result. If you set the smart folder at the main Library level, then it will "operate" on the entire Library and find any that are there. So, be sure you've made the proper selection in the folders pane....
    hope this helps.

  • Smart Folders - what do you do with the messages?

I am trying to organize business email using Smart Mailboxes. I love that I can click the Smart Mailbox and see all the correspondence I've had with that person in one folder. This is enormously helpful!
The question is this - what do I do with the original message? I now have HUNDREDS of emails sitting in my inbox. I can't delete them or they'll be gone from the Smart Mailbox, right? But I lose emails that I need to reply to because they get buried in the clutter.
What's the best way to handle this, create a Rule to move them to another folder after they've been read?

Smart Mailboxes are not for organizing messages. They are for finding messages that meet specified criteria. A Smart Mailbox is basically a saved search. For organizing, you want regular (non-smart) mailboxes. Use rules to file incoming messages automatically.

  • Smart folders and drag&drop

    Morning.
Is there a way to create a smart folder and then drag&drop some emails into this smart folder, so that I can find in this folder all emails I've collected in it without that these emails are moved out of their respective original mailbox?
This would be very usefull to merge emails without a special evident unique attribute but with similarity given by the user.
Do you know, what I mean?
    TIA and kind regards, Friedrich

That's understood. Is there any other approach to catch my concern to collect e-mails in one place without move them out of their original place and without to duplicate them?
no, it has to be a smart folder to do something like that.
Otherwise I think I'll set a keyword in MailTags and create a smart folder that catches all items including the keyword.
    That's probably your best bet.

  • Spotlight Comment Missing, But Smart Folders Still Work

I have entered a lot of spotlight comments on files. On about several 100 off them, Apple Command i does not show any spotlight comments. Its not likely that I erased or failed to "save" several 100, say about 600 out of 900 files. I know for a fact that I entered spotlight comments on nearly all of my photo files. For some reason, the smart folders that look for spotlight comments still return the files.
I shut down and rebooted. Still no change. For some reason, I cannot find the way to edit the search criteria in smart folders.
    Any ideas?

Well, this is proving to be a tough case. I rebooted with Option, Command P and R, and then rebooted in safe mode and ran disk utility, both verify permissions and check volume on both the upper level drive (the one that has a technical name) and the named volume (the one that has a user-assigned name). I hate to say this, but nothing has changed. <darn>.
I am kind of thinking about paying Apple to furnish and install an upgrade to my OS from 10.4 to 10.6 but am reluctant because of persistent reports that the newer OS has driver problems with Epson photo printers, and other issues with Adobe LightRoom which is a critical app for me.
I did search the forum to see if anybody else has the same kind of problem but did not find anything. It generous of you to offer your expertise, so I hate to keep coming back.
Anyway, is there another approach that I could look into?
    Thanks!

Are you sure that the "On My Mac" folders weren't empty? If all your mail accounts are IMAP, they may have been.

  • Can I add/show a size column for smart folders?

I've created a set of smart folders to filter the files on my system by size (e.g. <10megs, 10-499megs, 500-999megs and >1Gig.
What I'd like to do is sort the files by size, so having the folder show a size column would be great... however it doesn't seem to be possible (or the how is not publicized). It just shows name, kind and last opened. If I change the view to ICON, I can get the size for some files, but others, like movies or music, show their duration, not size.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
