Smart folders just refuse to work

hi i cannot get anything to show in smart folders/web gallerys, i have tried a simple star rating, and keywords, both cases knowing there are not too many of either so its not a problem dues to 1000s of pics.

As you are probably aware, smart folders are "aware" of the library structure...if you're attempting to build one in a library folder where there are NONE of the target images, you'll get this result. If you set the smart folder at the main Library level, then it will "operate" on the entire Library and find any that are there. So, be sure you've made the proper selection in the folders pane....
hope this helps.

  • Smart folders seems not to work with star rating. Is there a fix?

I Rate photos with a five star rating either on iPhoto or Adobe Bridge CS5. When I create a smart folder setting the search attribute to "Rating equals 5" nothing appears on the search.

    Sorry,
I think I misunderstood your question. You were talking about smart folders in the Finder and not about smart albums in iPhoto, right?  "Rating equals 5" does not work on any of my machines, neither in Snow leopard nor in Lion. The problem seems to be how to represent the rating in the search string. If I search for "Rating is not 5" the smart folder contains plenty of pictures, also those with a rating of five. Does anyone know how the rating is coded to be used in a search string in the Finder?

  • .JAR woes. It just refuses to work for me :-(

I spent a week building a simple java app from a C program I wrote a couple of years ago. The process has not been without tears, but I've enjoyed it. That is, up until the point of trying to make it into an 'executable' jar file. No matter what I do, it would refuse to launch and give 'can't find blah..' errors. After a couple of days of this and getting nowhere, it's starting to hack me off seriously.
To wipe out any oddness with my immature Java code, I dropped back to a 'hello world' basic program and tried again - but I still cannot get a working .jar out of it...
    PLATFORM: Debian Linux
    java version "1.6.0_14"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_14-b08)
Java HotSpot(TM) Server VM (build 14.0-b16, mixed mode)
This is what I've done - can anyone spot the error?
    Directory /develop/java/package1
    contains:
    HelloWorld.java
    HelloWorld.java
    public class HelloWorld {
        public static void main(String[] args) {
            System.out.println("Hello, World!");
}This compiles to HelloWorld.class and it runs without any issue with:
    java HelloWorld
    from inside the /develop/java/package1
    {funny enough from anywhere else in the filesystem it *wont* run - eg: java /develop/java/package1/HelloWorld - I'm not sure if that is relevant or standard Java security}
I have a manifest creation file in the parent directory (/develop/java/) that looks like this:
Main-Class: HelloWorld.classTo give it an Entry Point.
I try to create a simple executable .jar by running the command:
jar vcmf manifest HelloWorld.jar package1From the: /develop/java/ directory. This runs without error and creates HelloWorld.jar
    jar vcmf manifest HelloWorld.jar package1
    added manifest
    adding: package1/(in = 0) (out= 0)(stored 0%)
    adding: package1/HelloWorld.java(in = 124) (out= 101)(deflated 18%)
    adding: package1/HelloWorld.class(in = 427) (out= 289)(deflated 32%)
    Checking the /META-INF/MANIFEST.MF shows:
    Manifest-Version: 1.0
    Created-By: 1.6.0_14 (Sun Microsystems Inc.)
Main-Class: HelloWorld.classBut trying to execute it with: java -jar HelloWorld.jar throws:

I've tried altering paths, where I create the jar from etc, but it persists and after days of looking at this, I'm starting to wish I never bothered. What the hell am I missing here? It has to be staring me in the face?

  • Smart card reader refusing to work on OS X Mavericks

    Hi,
I am the owner of a bit4id Minilector EVO, a little smart card reader (manufactured by ACS Advanced Card Systems) who I use to comply with the digital signatures required by the Italian law.
There is an official application to use the smart cards; however, I'm experiencing major issues with it.
    Shortly:
    - When I plug the bit4id smart card reader into the USB port of my MBP, the LED shows it is recognized; System Information also tells it has been fully implemented into OS X
    - When I then insert the smart card, no issues are reported and the bit4id LED becomes fixed;
But, when I start the application to digitally sign, it tries to detect what cryptographic module I'm using. It detects the correct one but reports an «Internal error» halting the process.
I know there is an implementation of PCSC for OS X called PCSC-Lite, and that there is a terminal command to show if all is working properly.
    Something like pcsc[something] .
    Can you help me?
    Thanks in advance,
    Tyrexionibus

SCS is a very good app, since I've read that Apple has discontinued support for PC/SC interfaces after the release of Mountain Lion.
(My previous installation was a Mavericks upgrade from Lion)
However, I don't know what and how to debug using Smart Card Services. Do you know any commands to use?
Apparently, the SC reader reports no issues: the LED is blinking blue when no smart card is present and becomes fixed blue when a smart card is inserted – according to the manuals, this shows that there is correct communication between the OS and the CCID reader.
I don't know what to do; I'm beginning to hypothesize it's a digital signer issue. In fact, my smart card only supports one application called File Protector (by Actalis) to officially sign digital documents. This application seems to have major difficulties in identifying the miniLector EVO.
The generic and ambiguous internal error comes when I try to manually identify the peripheral.
Athena CNS is one of the Italian smart cards and is automatically recognized and configured (so it's correct – no doubts about this), while "ACS ACR 38U-CCID 00 00" seems to be the real name of the miniLector.
(I'm assuming this because System Information also returns that the real manufacturer is ACS... bit4id is a re-brander)
However, when I click on it and then tap OK, it returns internal error.
As first attempt, I would try to completely erase&clean File Protector files to try a reinstall. Then, if this still doesn't work, I'd debug using the terminal.
    So:
    - Do you know any applications to 100% clean files created by an installer?
    - Do you have in mind any solutions that I might have forgotten?
Thanks in advance from an OS X fan!

  • Create Non-Smart Folders?

I recently had to re-install my OS and now cannot find the command to create folders in Mail - NOT Smart Folders, just regular folders to organize my mail. I had these in my old installation (with POP accounts) but cannot now find the command to create sub-folders for organization under each mail account.
Where'd the command go? I cannot find it in the help file or the on-line support.

Should be Mailbox menu > New Mailbox... (just above New Smart Mailbox...), or alternatively click the + button in the bottom left corner of the Mail window, or click the gear next to it and select New Mailbox. If no folder is selected in the sidebar (i.e. the Inbox, Sent, etc. are selected), a new folder will be created at the top level of the mailbox list; if a folder is selected, the new folder will be a child of the selected folder.
    Hope this helps...

  • How to speed up smart folders?

How to speed up smart folders?
"Last documets" work instantly for me. But smart folder, which collect files with red labels works veery slow (like 10 seconds). Meanwhile last ones are the most usefull for me. Is this normal speed for them and is there a way to speed them up?

You don't, I'm afraid. iCloud has no equivalent to the iDisk. With MobileMe terminating at the end of June you will need to look for a third-party solution - this page examines some of the options:

  • Smart Folders Problem

    Ok, heres my set-up
I have three smart folders set up that work fine
    2 have rather unimportant E-Mails
the other one has important info
I want to set up a smart folder that displays all e-mails that ARE NOT in the 2 unimportant mailboxes
    I tried theses conditions
" Contains messages that match all of the following conditions:
Message is not in mailbox-"unimportant mailbox 1"
Message is not in mailbox-"unimportant mailbox 2" "
    THE PROBLEM IS
it lets messages from "unimportant mailbox 2" into that smart mailbox
can anyone show me some way of doing this?

Same problem with my setup (the which looks quite like you).
My rule is : 'Show every Note that doesn't contain "myText" '
The result : the smart folder contains the messages that do contain "myText"
I also tried the reverse (meaning : 'Show every Note that contains "myText" '), and both smart folders contain the EXACT same data.

  • Super-slow smart folders?

I'm currently using Mail as my default RSS reader. I have a number of Smart Folders set up to organize the feeds into categories (each based on a list of "From" rules). These smart folders, however, are SLOW. They'll update the unread counts and then when I click on them it will take anywhere from 10 seconds to a couple of minutes for the new messages to actually display.
This problem seems to only be related to smart folders that contain RSS feeds - my smart folders that hold mail messages are appropriately zippy, and selecting the RSS feeds themselves rather than the smart folders is perfectly fine.
Ideas? What might be slowing down the smart folders just for RSS feeds?

  • Major change to how smart folders work?

I'm an ex-PC user and one way I configured the finder to work more like how I was used to working was to color code all my folders red and the half-dozen files I work with on a daily basis green. I had smart folders for both in the Tiger sidebar and they were there all the time. In Leopard they are only there in a finder window and are in the search for area. When I am in a program and want to open a file, that search for section is no longer in the sidebar, so I have to drill down through all folders and sub-folders to find the file I want. Am I going to be limited to launching files directly from the smart folder to easily find the files I need and not open from within the application?
    RR

By default when you make a Smart Folder and save it you get it saved into this folder:
    "/Users/yourname/Library/Saved Searches"
If you open that folder you should see your Smart Folders. Drag them into the "Places" section of the Sidebar in your open Finder window. They will now show up in the Open dialog window of your application. Of course, you will have them listed twice in the normal Finder window: once in places, so you can see them in the Open window, and once in Search For. Jeez, don't the programmers ever have to talk to each other? Anyway, the sensible thing to do is to have other sorts of things, that you don't need access to from an application, in the Search For section--or just close that section up. This is definitely another "what were they thinking" moment.

  • Smart folders not working...

I've got some smart folders that just stopped working... I haven't changed the definitions and they were working fine, but all of a sudden they are not.
The one that is not working is defined with 3 things, one of them is another smart filter. This has always worked in the past.
I booted the machine, and inso doing went in and out of mail. Is there anything to reset?
    thanks...

I found a work around... but I'm still curious why this stopped working...
The original logic was to have a sort of pre-filter Smart Mailbox with tons of conditions with "Any" selected. Then the second folder had "All" selected with "In the pre-filter mailbox" and "in the inbox selected". This stopped working and I had to then change it to "In the pre-filter mailbox" and "not in the specific folder I later sort into" This isn't quite as useful since sometimes I sort into different folders, but it did work.
I'm on 10.4.10 on a PPC iMac G5 1GB DDR2 SDRAM... I've done all the updates Apple can put out here except the iPod stuff since I'm not in that world... yet.

Are you sure that the "On My Mac" folders weren't empty? If all your mail accounts are IMAP, they may have been.
