Smart groups & mailing labels

I have a mailing list (group) containing a bunch of zip codes, I want to make a smart group that will contain only 3 of these zip codes. Is there a way to do this? I can pull out 1 zip code at a time, but not 2 or more zip codes into a group.thanks,
bl

It should work.
Set the criteria to Zip Contains/Is and enter the first zip code in the box.
Then hit the plus sign, change 'all' to 'any'
Set the new criteria to Zip Contains/Is and enter the second zip code in the box

  • Can I use Boolean parameters and 'is empty ' in smart groups & mail rules?

How do you do the following smartgroup in Mail? State is MA or NH or ME and Email is not 'empty'? I also would like to make the following rule in Mail: If FROM is 'empty' and Subject is 'empty' then move to Trash. In other words is it possible to use invisible charakters <blank> or <empty> and boolean parameters in search fields. Any hits will be appreciated. ---Stefan

I have the same question, plus a couple more. Most of the spam that I get follows one of five simple patterns:
    1. It contains one or more empty fields (to, from, subject, or message body),
    2. It sometimes lacks a "from" or "subject" field entirely.
    3. Mail recipients are sequential (e.g. [email protected], [email protected], [email protected]).
    4. Total message size is 0.7 KB or less. (Due to empty fields.)
    5. It contains a gif or jpeg touting whatever product the spammer is flogging.
It seems like it would be trivial to incorporate filter rules to take care of empty or non-existent fields (categories 1 and 2). But I can't see a way to do that in Mail currently. Hopefully Apple is working on this? Or maybe there's a third-party add-on that can address this?
Also it would be easy to take care of #3 with the use of simple grep expressions. But I don't think Mail can do this yet. (Again, any third-party solutions out there?)
For #4, obviously a rule that could take into account message size would help deal with those emails.
And for #5, it's more problematic, but since there are programs out there that can read graphics, hence the need for captcha "encryption" on web sites, why not use such an app as a Mail extension? It would be great if it could interoperate with Mail's rules, so you could set up something like "if message contains a jpeg or gif and if the image contains 'penile enlargement' then delete/put in junk folder."
Currently I put all messages with attachments (that haven't already been approved by my whitelist) in a "limbo" folder for later review. But I have to use a minor kluge to do this. Ideally I'd just say "if message has an attachment" or "if message attachment is not empty," but those options aren't available so I have to say "if name of attachment contains '.'" Since pretty much all files have a "." in them, it seems to work fine, but strictly speaking it's not as elegant as I'd like it to be.

  • Since migrating to Mavericks Mail is not seeing Smart Groups in Contacts

Since migrating to Mavericks, when I try to send an email to a list of people in a Contacts Smart Group, mail doesnt find the group and I am having to put the recipients in one by one

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

  • How do you send an e-mail to all members of a defined group in smart groups?

I am one of the organisers of an annual guitar meeting and want to send mail to all the regular attendees.
I have set up a "Smart Group" and "Distribution List" but can't see how to send the information about our next meeting without entering all the e-mail addresses individually.
    Can anyone help please?

    Hi William,
I've tried this, but it isn't working for me. Should I chnge the Smart Group, to an ordinary one?
    Thanks

  • Mail will not send to smart Group

I have several smart groups set up and have been using them for mail distribution for years.  All of a sudden, yesterday, several of them will not work for Mail.  I can't expand the group and I press the send button- nothing happens.  Any Suggestions?

Hi Zach, and a warm welcome to the forums!
I'm no Mail expert, I only leave it installed in an attempt to help out here, but I do have a couple of questions for you.
Are you dragging the Group to the TO: box, or the BCC: box?
    How many arein the Group?

  • Can Smart Groups split a large e-mail Group

We have a Group mailing list for our Newsletter.  To send the Newsletter with Mail, we put my name into the "To" field and put the Group into the bcc field.
Due to ISP restrictions, when the Group became larger than 99, we split this one Group into 2 smaller "Smart Groups" by selecting names with and then without the letter "s" in their name.  This method split the names fairly evenly.  We would then send the Newsletter to the first Smart Group one day, and to the second Smart Group on the following day.  This system worked well, until now.
The problem is now the main Group is over 200 and we need to split it into 3 smaller Groups.  Can anyone think of a way to do this using Smart Groups?
(Just like my HS PhysEd teacher once said:  "I want you guys to pair off in threes.")

    Thanks, we'll try that.
Actually, since we have Google Apps for Business it appears that we might be allowed to send either 500 or 2000 messages daily but no more than 99 addresses in any one message.  Not sure if their "no more than 100" when using AppleMail applies or not when using Google Apps for Business.
ConstantContact would work but it costs $15/month.  Hoolie has a one-time $40 charge but you must use your own ISP.

  • Mail Smart Groups

My mail smart groups are too large for server - How do I make smart groups smaller e.g. A-F, G-L, M-S T-Z? Any help appreciated

Just edit the groups and set the criteria such that it only gets those items you want in the group.
You would likely need to create a criteria entry for each letter to include.
Although I don't know of any personally, you may want to get some third-party software that does mass mailings, or subscribe to a mass mailing service.

  • Automating e-mailing to multiple Smart Groups

Limitations imposed by my ISP require breaking what used to be a single weekly e-letter to about 400 people into 23 separate messages to subsets of the by domain, achieved through SmartGroups. At present am having to compose and format the lengthy message, then open a new message window, change the "from" choice (so it shows for my arts council e-mail address rather than my default e-mail), paste the formatted text into the window, re-enter the subject, and select the SmartGroup and send, then have to repeat this 22 more times. I think there's probably a way to automate this, but don't see how--can it be done with Automator? If so, how? Or AppleScript? If that, how?

Well, you will get an immediate reduction in workload by using "Send Again". After sending to your first smart group, select the message in the Sent box and use Send Again. The message will open, allowing you to remove the first group from the To field and substitute the next.
As for proper automation, what are you using to compose the newsletter? Building the script in there might help. Applescript can certainly help with the distribution task, but it has no way of knowing a smart group from an ordinary group. I would be inclined to keep a master group, and have applescript iterate through the contacts in it, adding 20 (or whatever is left) to the To field and sending off the mail.
Another possibility is to talk to your ISP, and see is the limit absolute, or if it can be lifted in clearly-defined non-spam cases. Or find a more co-operative ISP ...

    Hi Colin
I dont know if this fixes your problem, but I found this article: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20050616151738798
    The main suggestion is this:
I was able to get around it in a simple but possibly not obvious way. First, make a smart group with your wanted criteria. Next make a regular group whose only member is the smart group. Presto! A smart group that you can use in Mail.app, and that will also auto-complete.

  • Smart group causes Mail to crash

I created a smart group that immediately caused Mail (3.6 (936)) to crash (apparently).
Since, I have been unable to launch Mail normally - it starts with the smart group in question selected, and then crashes, I need to force quit it.
I have tried to launch Mail with shift pressed down. It starts, and works, up to the moment I select this smart group. I can modify it, and perform delete command, but this is never executed, Mail crashes... Any suggestions?

hmibrooklyn I tried and failed to get Mail to crash by following what you described. Until someone else has anything more constructive to add I suggest the following, in no particular order. Try each suggestion and determine if any one of them keeps Mail from crashing.
Try copying the text from Pages, but instead of pasting it select Paste and Match Style from Mail's Edit menu before formatting it as a numbered list.
Before composing the message select Make Plain Text from Mail's Format menu.
If you have more than one Mail account, perform the same action using a different Mail account.
Open Font Book - it's in your Applications folder. Select All Fonts from the Collections column, then select any of the fonts in the adjoining column, then Select All from the Edit menu. Then, select Validate Fonts from the File menu.
The end result ought to resemble the following screenshot. If it does not, report any errors it encounters.
Create a new, temporary User account to determine if the problem exists while using it instead of your usual one: Isolating an issue by using another user account
You will have to configure a Mail account for the temporary User account, but you can use the settings from the existing Mail account.
Delete the temporary User account when you are finished with it.
That's all I can think of for now.

  • Adding Smart Group addressees to an email in Mail

I seem to have lost the ability to add anyone that I have under a Smart Group to any of the address fields in Mail. I can use regular groups (but then need to keep up to date on those) but not people listed under a Smart Group. How do I resolve? Smart Groups were brilliant, but not if I can't use them in Mail....

Works for me although there are problems for which I just opened a separate discussion.

  • Bummer with Mavericks and changes to smart groups in apple mail

I am so not happy with Mavericks and how it changed smart groups in apple mail. Before it was easy to create a group mailing to my clients. I find nothing helpful in their help link either. I want it to show in bcc so I can see who I am mailing to. Seriously, i would not have downloaded this if I had known they'd get rid of the ease of smart groups. Since there are no smart groups now, why do they even have it listed? The option? I can't see what I can even do with it. Do I sound crabby? Yup. Thank you for helping. I need to bcc to a group of 271 clients. Bad apple! Bad! Seems like newer versions should bring improvments, not the opposite.

    Hi,
Yes that is what I had to do yesterday and it wasn't easy but quirky, as far as entering names etc to clients. There's now nothing "smart" about it. They should remove the smart group folder since it doesn't really exist now. I was not a happy camper.
I repeat here what I said earlier in case you did not see it: I called Apple in Cupertino, CA and spoke with someone in Customer Care I think it was. She was nice and listened but said that she has no power with higher-ups and to post here and that they do see it. I hope enough of us post about this issue that they change it! Go to: apple.com\feedback , then to products, choose Maverick (I guess), drop down window and post there. I will too. Thanks.
I hope she understood I meant it as a smart group issue and not just quirky email issues with gmail etc. Have a good day.

  • How to print editable mailing labels from Address Book?

I am once again working on Holiday Mailing Labels (450 pple) and needing to export editable mailing labels from a smart group in my Address Book.  but I can only print out non-editable pdf labels.  Is there a way around this?  Editable labels are vital!! Can I export my contacts to a file that can be imported into Microsoft Word Labels Mail Merge?

I have the same problem. After much searching for easy solutions, I just added a user account on my mac, and use the address book/contacts for the end of year mailings. This meant copying, manually, a lot of contacts! At the same time as they were entered the edits were made. I can make edits ongoing within these lists without changing the contacts in my personal user account. There oughta be a better way!!!
