Smart Guides- Not that Smart?

Problem: Can't snap a curcle's center to a multi-angled (45 and 90 degree) path
Device and Program details: Illustrator CS6 running on a 2009 iMac (3.06 Ghz Processer and 16 GB RAM)
I've worked with Ai for years but can't remember running into this problem but it seems so simple. When I click, hold and drag center of the circle over the angled path it pretends its not even there. But when I make a sigle straight line, the circle will snap to that path. So my question is, can smart guides even do this (and if so, how) or is this a glitch with the new CS6?
I've experimented with the Smart Guide preferences but nothing seems to work. If you have any feedback please let me know.
Here is a pic of the the object and path I'm trying to snap:

They changed the behavior of Smart Guides with CS5, I think. (Maybe it was CS4) In some circumstances, you need to hold cmd to get it to snap.
If that doesn't work, are there any compound shapes that encircle the area shown?  Sometimes they can be an invisible block to clicks and snaps, even though there isn't anything visible...

  • Media Smart DVD, not that smart.... Will only play some blu ray, not all.

When I get a computer with a blu ray player I expect it to play blu ray discs... all of them. It works with some but not all.
The discs it does not work with, what happens is it will ask me "Do you want to check for updates" and there will be a box to check yes or no. In the background it will say disc is ready to be played, just push play. Easy right? HECK NO.
If you check yes, it will do the little wait symbol and process the request checking for updates, then come right back and ask you again, a never ending circle of asking to check for updates. If you push NO, it will go away, then you have a couple options, one is open up the menu and see if there is actually an update... nope. no update there. the other option is do what it says and push play since it thinks the blu ray is ready to play. Once I push play it starts to think and pops up that "Do you want to check for updates" again. It is so frustrating. HEY HP, FIX THIS DUMB CIRCULAR TRAP THAT WONT LET ME WATCH BLU RAY.
And this is a major motion picture blu ray disc from block buster video. Not some copied random disc. So, I know it aint the disc.

I am running into this same issue. I have a HPE-180t with a BD-RE BH20L Blu-Ray drive. I put in 'Scott Pilgrim vs The World' and got a message that asked if i wanted to update, to which I clicked 'NO' and then after about 5 sec of it seaching the drive it replied with "Format Not Supported". I ejected and reinserted a few times and tried another Blu-Ray movie (also The Expendables) and it gave me the same message.
I searched the internet and found a forum message with steps to uninstall the DVD portion of MediaSmart and reinstall using Recovery Manager, but after the uninstall now Recovery Manager will not open to reinstall HP MediaSmart DVD.
I then attempted a Windows System Restore to a few days prior, which went through the motions, but then had a failed message upon reboot.
I then ran the HP Support Assistant > Troubleshoot > Utilities> Storage Devices> Optical Drives and ran the test on the BH20L drive which failed in recognizing any Blu-Ray media (movie or blank BD-R). I had just used this drive a week ago to archive some photos onto the blank Blu-Ray media mentioned without issue.
Please help HP, this is really a nuisance for this seriously robust machine.
[edit]...Also I went out to the website for my system looking for any updates and the only one I installed was a BIOS update dated November 2010.

  • Adobe Illustrator CC 2014 – Smart Guides Not Working

I have been having an issue with Illustrator CC 2014's smart guides not snapping to other objects. In this instance I dragged used the 'Selection Tool' to drag one of the 8 points of the bounding box to the second square.
This also happens when trying to resize items to guides, Illustrator 'snaps' the object to the guide, but it is not inline!
I have noticed that this issue does not occur when resizing or moving groups of objects groups of objects. It seems that the two different types of bounding boxes are the issue?

There seems to be a problem with rectangle shapes and smart guides. The problem has been reported in the forum some time ago.

  • [CS3 - Win] Smart Guides not showing up when Snap To Grid enabled

Has anyone else encountered this bug?
    AI CS3 13.02
Smart Guides are turned on, but hovering over items does not show the cyan hints, snapping to anchor points / paths etc does not work. This only occurs when Snap To Grid is enabled. If you then go and turn it off, the Smart Guides start working again as expected.
    Is this a known bug?
    Tom

Thanks for the reply Mike. Smart Guides work perfectly for me provided Snap to Grid is turned off.
I can see there being a conflict between snapping to grid and smart guides in CS3 - which takes precedence? From a UX perspective, if these two snapping modes are mutually exclusive, there should be at the very least an alert letting you know the other mode is disabled; the menu item should be greyed out. Or if it's truly an either-or situation, then the menu needs to be revised such that both snap to grid and smart guides are within the same submenu, and only one can be selected at a time, toggle with CMD+SHIFT+OPT+U.

  • Smart guides not working

    Hello,
I'm working in Illustrator CS4 on a Mac.
In Preferences, I set Smart Guides to 30 degree angles and clicked on Construction Guides.
In View, I clicked on Smart Guides (command U).
However, when I click on an anchor point and try to move it 30 degrees with Smart Guides to guide me, they don't show up.
I've tried restarting the program and turning Smart Guides on/off, but nothing seems to work.
Any idea why the Smart Guide lines don't show up?
    Thank you.
    Joe

No, I don't think Pixel Preview is the answer.
I've used Smart Guides effectively for years in Illustrator CS3 without Pixel Preview.
Often I draw my objects in Illustrator to appear isometric. So I turn on the Smart Guides to help me draw at 30 degree angles.
As I said, I've done this effectively for years. It's only recently that I noticed that the 30 degree angle guides are not working effectively. On some documents they appear correctly, some they don't appear at all.
I wonder if this is a glitch is CS4.
In the most current document I have, I am able to draw a stroke/line at 30 degrees using Smart Guides. I click to establish an anchor point and then move my curser to establish a second anchor point. When I go to click the second anchor (to create the line), 30 degree Smart Guides appear correctly. I am not in Pixel Preview mode.
However, when I try to move an object (or 2 or more selected anchor points), the 30 degree Smart Guides do not appear.
Can someone try to duplicate the above and see if they get the same results?
    Thank you.

  • Smart Guides Not Showing

    Hi,
Smart Guides are not showing when I use Adobe Illustrator CC.
There were several posts in this forum that suggest turning of "snap to grid" and double checking the preferences that smart guides are on. I've done both and provided screenshots.
Smart Guides is very important feature to me. I need it urgently back on.
    Thanks

    amarzum,
It could be a preference corruption.
    You may try to:
    1) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
    or:
    2) Move the folder Other options (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible).

  • Smart Guides not working (grayed out).

I too am having problems with the 'Smart Guides' option being grayed out in the 'View' - 'Grids and Guides' column. I've replaced the preferences, checked all the appropriate boxes, yet nothing I do works. Additionally, the 'Smart Guides' did work for some time. However, for reason(s) I'm unaware of, they just stopped showing up. I'm stumped. Any suggestions?

I've branched your question out of the Replace Your Prefs thread into one of its own and changed the title so more people will see it. I'm not able to make the menu item go gray here, and I'm going to presume that you followed the instructions in the other thread for trashing the prefs, so I'm not going to suggest you do that again, at least not yet.
It would help if we know your OS and version of ID (including the update patch applied).

  • Align / smart guides not working

I am having a super-weird problem. I have a black rectangle that I would like to be exactly the same width as a larger white rectangle. When I try aligning the left edges, it is ever so slightly off. When I turn on smart guides and try to transform the black rectangle to snap to the white rectangle's left edge, the same thing happens -- ever so slightly off.
There are only 3 rectangles in the entire .ai, and I have checked to make sure that snap to pixels / snap to grid are turned off. I have quit and restarted the program.
Any clue why align is being funky, or how to fix it?
    Thanks!

It sounds like something is going on with the alignment using the align tool. You could, if need be do it the old fashion way by the numbers. Entering numeric values fo X and Y positions to align exactly. This can be done with copy and paste too.
Wait, you may need to check how your aligning in Preferences.
Are you aligning to Preview Bounds or to the actual vectors?
    Or… Vector

  • Smart Guides not available

Why is the Smart Guides option grayed out in my View menu. I am unable to turn them on/off and all options are selected in the Preferences ➡︎ Guides & Pasteboard ➡︎ Smart Guides menu.

Thank you for the valuable info on fixing my Smart Guides issue. Evidently I wasn't fast enough to press four keys while restarting ID, so I used the method for exposing hidden files, entered the Library, and changed the names of two ID files thereby replacing the preferences. Worked like a charm!

  • Smart Album not so smart?

Hi. A few months ago I upgraded from iPhoto to aperture. It's all rather confusing but I've been willing to overlook it because of the usefulness of aperture as an advanced photo editor.
Now however all sorts of weird things are showing up. The Smart albums in particular are bizarre. Even the ones that come pre-made in Aperture. In particular the “in the last month” and "in the last week" etc. contain images from all over the map, as it were. Yes, there are images from in the last month, week or what have you—but there are also random images from all sorts of other time frames, projects, albums and folders.
This is particularly annoying because it also seems to have messed up the way photos are synced with my iPhone which (much to my surprise) is one of my favorite things to do on the iPhone: display my photos. Albums on the iPhone contain images often repeated 75 times or other such bizarre problems.
I assume something is corrupt somewhere but I don't know how to “reboot” my libraries without losing precious information.
Can anyone tell me what is wrong with my smart albums and what is wrong with the syncing.
    Many thanks…

As a new Aperture user myself, I had a similar issue. Maybe it's related to yours.
Smart Albums have many options to choose from, and I was a bit confused at the beginning. While setting the Smart Album, you need to be sure you're marking the options you really want/need, and nothing else. For example, my "In the last month" Smart Album showed only one photo, and that wasn't correct.
But the reason was simple: I had written some text in the Search/Filter field (upper right), and obviously that was filtering the not-so-smart results in my folder.
    Hope that helps.

  • Smart Groups not so "smart".

I have noticed that within Smart Groups I can not Edit Distribution List email addresses. After I change, they do not stick. Editing Distribution List works on regular Groups no problem.
Anyone have this issue or answer?
Also isn't it funny the Smart Groups do not sync to MobileMe or iPhone, once again not so "smart".
    Any suggestions?

I'm not sure what you mean about editing distribution list addresses, but what you need to understand is that Smart Mailboxes are not actually mailboxes. Think of them more like saved searches - they remember what you're searching for and do a new search for those items when you view them. This is why they don't behave like regular mailboxes in many ways.

  • Smart shape callout pointer behavior not that smart

when moving the pointer on rectangular smart shape callout it jumps from one corner to the next.  Why can't I position the pointer at the middle of the box (or anywhere I want it to be)?  Is there a way to do this?

    Hello again
Thanks for the links. I think I sorted it.
Click the slide in question and look at the properties. You have the option "Master Slide Objects on Top" enabled. Something about that is preventing the shape from sensing the rollover.
Click to clear that option and the mouseover should then work.
    Cheers... Rick

  • TS1702 I have downloaded the Pimp my sounds App.  I can not get it to load on my phone.  I have watched every video and maybe I am not that smart.  Can someone help me please.

I just can not get this App to work.  I have followed the video, I was just wondering if because I am using a later version of Itunes that is the reason.

For support for this app, which isn't an Apple product, contact the app developers, which can be found in the App Store description.

  • Smart Collections Not-so-smart?

I have recently started using smart collections to gather various pictures I have taken of works of art.  I have mutliple shots of the same art works, and I want to see all the shots at once in order to delete some and edit others.  There are several hundred files in the collection.  But each time I make any change to a file (edit or delete it), the entire collection must be re-built (perhaps just re-indexed, but, the panel goes blank it must be re-displayed).  This is time consuming and makes working my way through the collection practially impossible.  Is there something wrong, or is just the nature of smart collections?

    Thanks Curt.
I have avoided the problem by copying all the files in my smart collection into a regular (not "smart") collection.
I was having problems with regular collections, but I eventually solved this problem.  (You responded to my post on this issue a couple of weeks back.)  Bridge would not remember all the items in a collection after re-starting.  All the files were listed in the collection filelist, but the collection would contain only those at the beginning of the list.  I discovered the solution by examining the files that caused the problem (i.e., if the collection contained only 57 items after re-starting Bridge, I examined the 58th file named in the filelist).  The problematic files all contained apostraphes (') or hyphens (-).  Bridge (and Photoshop) allows these characters in filenames, but the filelist is a straight DOS textfile, and so filenames with these characters caused Bridge to stop reading collections files from a filelist as soon at it came across such a character.  I used batch renaming to get rid of the offending characters, and now Bridge remembers all the files in my collections.
So, this solved my problem, but it is definitely a bug in the program that Bridge allows characters in filenames that other functions in the program can't recognize.
