Smart Mailbox Message Counter

Is it possible to have a Smart mailbox in the Mailbox pane on the left side of the Mail window show the number of messages in the Smart Mailbox and not just the number of unread messages? What would be most desirable is a indication like "3/7" where the 3 indicates 3 unread messages and 7 indicates the number of all message read and unread.
Thank you in advance.
Jeff Cameron

I guess there is no answer. I will post this as an enhancement request with Apple.

  • Smart mailbox unread counts wrong

After upgrading to Mavericks, my smart mailboxes' unread counts are all wrong. I've tried restarting mail and rebuilding mailboxes and recreating the smart mailboxes, but still they are wrong.

Got from other post the following instructions. After following these steps my problem is solved. Hope this works for all of you:
    Quit Mail if it’s open.
In ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData, delete any file that begins with “Envelope Index,” such as Envelope Index or Envelope Index-shm.
Your home Library folder is hidden by default. To display it, choose Finder > “Go to Folder” and then enter “~/Library.”
    Open Mail.
Mail creates new Envelope Index files. This process may take a few minutes, depending on how many messages Mail is reindexing.

  • Smart Folder Message Count Wrong

I have a smart folder set up to show me all flagged messages. The folder list on the left of the Mail window displays the number of messages in the folder, but it is constantly wrong. Right now, it says there are three messages but when I go to the folder there are none!
I've tried deleting the smart folder and recreating multiple time with the same problem each time.
Any ideas on how to fix this?

I have the same issue, still. Most of the replies in the forum say to rebuild the mailboxes the flagged messages are in. This does seem to work but its a hassle because if you are organised and have quite a number of mailboxes it's laborious to find the offending mailbox. Also rebuilds sometimes make otherwise read messages unread again. I've tried rebuilding the flagged smart mailbox as someone suggested but didn't reset the count for me.
Be wonderful if the powers that be could fix this issue, it's been around for a long time... I've just given up in the hope that one day it'll be solved

  • Archiving Smart Mailbox Messages

Is there a way to archive only the messages in a Smart Mailbox (alternatively, archive only selected messages).
    Thank you

Why do I need to post a comment or a follow-up before I can mark a question as answered? That's silly.

  • What is Behavior for Smart Mailbox message retention/deletion?

When (how long) do Smart Mailboxes delete their mail? Mine seem to last only a day or a week. It's impossible to tell. I don't see anywhere that I can set the preference.
    Thanks

Smart Mailboxes don't do anything to messages except list them. The messages must reside somewhere else. If the message is deleted from wherever it lives, or if it no longer satisfies the search criteria that define the Smart Mailbox, it will no longer appear. For example, suppose the Smart Mailbox specifies "unread" messages. Once the message has been read, it will not appear in that Smart Mailbox the next time it is opened.

  • "Updating smart mailbox unread counts"

I am never able to quit Mail now because this single "activity" keeps it from quitting. The thermobar just hangs there nearly half-way through.
Even clicking on the stop sign in the Activity window only produces:
    "STOPPING: <smart mailbox name>"
    ..which never stops.
I have tried rebuilding all of the mailboxes, deleting the offending "smart" mailbox and creating a new one (only to have a different "smart" mailbox cause the same problem), etc.
The only way out is to force-quit Mail, which I really hate to do (I never want my mailbox, indexes, etc. scragged).
Does anyone else have this problem? I must admit that there are so many smart mailbox postings that I wasn't able to paw through them all looking for similar behavior.

I would try rebuilding the whole Mail index. quit mail and delete the file homedirectory/library/mail/envelope index. start Mail and let it import. see how things are after that.

  • How to reset junk mailbox message count?

Apologies if this is resolved elsewhere, but I can't find it. For the past several months I have received several "ghost" spams per day. (There is nothing in the sender, message header, or body.) The mail filter does not catch them. I wrote a rule (based on a suggestion in this forum) where if "from" does not contain "@" it is sent to junk. It seems to work fine. Since about then - and I'm not sure if the events are simultaneous - my junk mailbox won't reset its count of messages. I have erased all messages in it and SOME are erased, with the count being reduced by 3-4. The total shown next to the mailbox icon continues to grow, however. It is now around 50. There appear to be no messages in the mailbox. This began before I upgraded to Tiger and has continued since then. Mail seems to work fine, but it is very irritating. Thanks for your help.

    Hello Michael.
Assuming this junk mailbox is for a POP type account, quit Mail first and using the Finder go to Home > Library > Mail > this account named folder (named by the user name and incoming mail server for the account) > Junk.mbox.
Delete the Junk.mbox folder and empty the Trash.
When re-launching Mail, a new Junk.mbox will be created automatically by Mail within the account named folder when receiving the next message that is automatically or manually marked as junk.

  • Unread messages count is wont for Smart Mailbox

Has anyone else noticed that a smart mailbox has a non-zero unread message count but as soon as it is clicked on the count is reset to zero? Zero is correct because all of the messages have been read. I've tried rebuilding the inbox but it hasn't helped. I also recreated the smart mailbox but that didn't help either. Sounds like a bug to me but I wonder if others have experienced it. I am using Mail Tags so that is a possible complication.

Same problem here with Yahoo mail.  Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.  I have looked at Yahoo mail from all folders in my phone (running 7.0.3 now), as well as in a browser, looked at Inbox (empty), all Trash, Sent, etc. folders and they're completely empty on Yahoo servers.
I thought that 7.0.3 had initially cleared up this issue but it has reappeared, and I don't know how to fix it.

  • How to get accurate count of contents of smart mailbox?

I have a smart mailbox defined as "sender is a member of a group x" and "date received is within last 2 days." When I click on it, Mail indicates "(8 messages)" -- but there are only 7 listed. I've tried the sqlite3 ~/Library/Mail/Envelope\ Index vacuum command in Terminal, I've rebuilt the individual mailboxes making up this count (and the smart mailbox itself) and I even deleted the smart mailbox itself and recreated it, to no avail.
Any other suggestions for getting a correct count?

Is it possible that mysterious 8th message is one you deleted, but is still registering as being there, even though you can't see it? Have you tried enabling the View > Show Deleted Messages command to see if it appears then?
If that command shows you nothing, then you can completely rebuild your Mail index to see if that solves your problem:
    1. Quit Mail.
    2. Go to Home/Library/Mail and remove (+*do not delete yet*+) the Envelope Index file to the Desktop.
    3. Restart Mail and let it import your existing mailboxes. When that's done, your index will be brand new and with any luck that message should no longer show up in a count. Now you can delete the Envelope Index file you removed previously.

  • Number of messages in Smart Mailbox

A question & some relavent thoughts:
In Mail, the number of Unread messages is shown the right of each mailbox.  But what are the total number messages?   Alternatively, how many Read messages are there?
I have many folders.  I am trying to create separate mailboxes for each important (to me) Sender.  Then it would be possible to find out how many messages were in 1 Smart Mailbox not contained in any other Smart Mail Box by
    1. having a Smart Mailbox containing all mail, and
    2. specifying conditions: From ...  Does not contain ...   Sender
    3. for each Sender
This would be very tedious if one receives mail from many senders.  However, if
    1. all senders belong to at least 1 Group,
this might be onerous but at least feasible.
If however, there were a Smart Mailbox condition:
    2. Group ...  Does not contain ...   Sender,
then this would feasible witnout being too onerous.
If anyone has any answers and/or suggestions,  I would be very happy to receive same!
    Chuck

I have had the same problem as well and could not find any way of fixing it! Also when I changed the name of the folder the message count disappeared for a while and then seemed to come back later... very bizarre.
Anyway, I may have found a solution after spending all afternoon searching the internet on macosxhints. [Link goes to the specific hint].
I would advise making a complete back-up of your ~/Library/Mail folder before trying this, though. When I did this it seemed to re-import some messages and mark them as unread for some unknown reason. However, I went through and marked them all as 'read', and I have the same number of messages in each mailbox as I did before I tried this, so I can only assume that things are the same as before.
One thing has changed, however! I no longer have a false number on the 'Flagged' messages smart mailbox! (Although if you have lots of messages marked as 'flagged' it may clear the flag - not sure).

  • How to show mail count in smart mailbox?

I have a smart mailbox that displays messages from a specific local folder/mailbox for the current day.  The counter next to this smart mailbox is only for unread messages.  Is there a way to change the counter so it displays for all messages in the current day (read and unread)?

It works on a new install on a new computer... so its obviously from the upgrade... it happens on mine as you have described... but setup a new computer for a client and they got message counts on their smart folders...

  • Smart Mailbox Counter is Wrong

Kind of strange, if I create a smart mailbox to show, for instance, only emails which have arrived today, the counter at the top of the box is wrong. For instance, at the top it says "(4 messages)" but there are only 2 messages in the window.
I tried rebuilding my Inbox, Trash and Sent boxes but that didn't make a difference. (Although I did get a very strange result from the rebuilding... hundreds of emails I long ago moved to other boxes for storage, or deleted, were restored and marked as unread. As a result I don't want to try that again.)
Message counts in other non-smart mailboxes, ie, Inbox, are correct.
    Any thoughts?
    thanks, Paul D.

  • Can't get smart mailboxes to work with "message has flag = color"

I'm trying to set up a Smart Mailbox that will find all the messages to which I've assigned a green flag.  This should be easy, right?
Unfortunately, this isn't working -- I definitely have messages with green flags in my inbox, but they're not being collected into the smart mailbox.
    I've also tried this:
    but it doesn't work either.
Is this broken in Mavericks?  Am I doing something wrong?

Re Eric: Arggh -- the first image (which went into the comment form but didn't show up) was of the "create smart mailbox" dropdown, which tested "match all rules: message has flag = green".  The second image tested "match all rules: message is flagged & message has flag = green".
Re William: I'd like to have one smart mailbox for green flags and another for purple flags.  The colors here were just meant to be examples.

  • Archiving a Smart Mailbox to a RAW Message Source using Automator?

In MAIL I can set a smart mailbox to say get emails from ("any" recipient contains [email protected])
But in Automator when I use the Filter messages in mail I can't be that broad with my selection, I can only select sender, and not ANY recipient. Be that someone cc'd with that email address, the sender or reciever.
One way around this is allowing Automator to select a Smart Mailbox from MAIL to do the selecting.
But I can't get Automator to select a Smart Mailbox.
What I need to do is take my Smart Mailbox content and every X# of days, for my needs it would be 7 days, export out last X# of days, again for me its 7 days, worth of emails as a RAW Message Source and append it to an existing RAW Message Source file in a specified folder.
Or if appending to an existing file is not possible then create individual files but name them something like, Weekending_10_282006, where the date in file name matches the day the script was run.
Then place this to always run on a Saturday.
I am using this to backup messages for specific projects at work. And I would like to use it to backup emails from my cousin who is serving overseas in Iraq.
    Thank you for your help.

  • Duplicate messages in search results (when using Smart Mailboxes, etc)

I've recently started using Search Folders more and more in Mail.app
I've encountered this very annoying bug/feature, where duplicate messages show up in a search (inside Mail). The duplicate messages are showing up multiple times (once, for each Smart Mailbox they reside in) as well as their physical Mailbox, as well as "All Mail".
    The lowdown:
    Mac OS X Leopard (10.5.4 Build 9E17)
Dual 1.25 GHz PowerPC G4 -----(shut up! it still rocks w/my multiple 23'' apple displays)
    2GB RAM
    Mail.app Version 3.3 (926.1/926)
This feature/bug makes it VERY difficult to find things when I'm forced to sift through at least 3 copies of any message that appears in Smart Mailboxes.
Should I stop using Smart Mailboxes because this is a deliberate feature?
Any suggestions or thoughts would be GREATLY appreciated.
In a search, I think that a better way to display the multiple locations (through Smart Mailboxes, etc) that a mailbox "appears" would be to add something to the header section of a message, below everything else, or off to the right, which would indicate the Original (physical) folder a message exists in, as well as it's locations via Search Folders. This would at least eliminate the problem where they're showing up as two, three, or more COPIES within a search.
    Thanks,
    Jackson

    Hi Christiaan !
I understand your problem. Could you set your IMAP account to avoid multiple simultaneous sessions?? maybe if there is only one session allowed per user or per time, then parallel XI threads will not be able to start downloading the messages.
If you cannot use a longer poll interval, then you could develop an adapter module for the Mail sender adapter that could be used to verify if the current mail is just being downloaded by other thread. This adapter module could check the unique mail data (date/time + subject + etc.) against a local table.
    Regards,
    Matias.
