Smart Mailboxes Criteria- Need More Location Options

In the domain I use (let's call it blank.com), I figured out that spammers send a lot of spam to specific addresses - specifically [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], etc.
I set up a smart mailbox that listed about 10 of these zombie addresses that are all spam and the joining conjunction in the smart mailbox coding is ANY. The issue is this: Is it possible to restrict my search criteria to specific locations? After I locate 100 spams in this smart mailbox and Mark as spam, they get sent to the junk folder. The problem is, unless I go into the junk folder and delete the new additions, the smart mailbox search criteria will continue to find new spam and it finds the old spam that is now in the junk folder.
Ideally, I would be able to have a rule that looks for ANY of these:
recipient includes [email protected] in the folder Inbox
recipient includes [email protected] in the folder Inbox
recipient includes [email protected] in the folder Inbox
But I don't think I can do this, or can it?

Well, syncing does not just work.
I reset my sync data. I got another set of smart mailboxes, all with empty fields. And a new smart mailbox that I had created just for the test on that mac disappeared. I expected this, as it was set to sync. But the sync produced only smart boxes with empty criteria again.
I also unregistered a mac that did not work. And then reregistered it. And synced it. And again, I only got empty fields in the criteria, and 2 sets of smart boxes.
So I went to "~/Library/Mail/SmartMailboxes.plist" and moved that plist to the unsyncable mac. And now I have working smart mailboxes again.
I don't know why the sync does not work. Or when it happened. I will keep watch.

  • Hi, I'm creating an iphoto book and need more design options.  Someone said I had a program called "Keynote" on my new imac.  Is that true, and if so where is it?    Thanks    e is it

Hi, I'm creating an ibook in iphoto and need more design options.  Someone said there was a program called "Keynote" on my new imac.  If so, how do I find it?

This application is very well available, just not preinstalled on your mac.
It costs $19 dollars on the Mac app store and is worth every penny.

  • Time Machine Needs More User Options

Such as ... how often to backup. This thing just runs way too much. The only option we have is what to exclude? Pretty lame.

I was thinking the same thing. Keep the simple setup, but add an Advanced... button in case you want to make changes. I would like to see the option to modify the frequency of backups or schedule them. I don't think I would have much use for an hourly backup. Every hour, I hear my external drive (WD MyBook) spin up and do the backup. That may get annoying. The backup is quick, but the drive fan runs for about 10 minutes before going into standby mode again. Once a day would work and then that could get consolidated into the weekly backup. If they added that option, it might be nice to add an option to wake the computer from sleep to do the backup. That would allow one to set the once daily backup for sometime when the computer is not in use. (i.e. 2 am or so). Previous to Leopard/Time Machine, I used ChronoSync and scheduled it to do a weekly backup early Saturday morning (ChronoSync can wake computer from sleep to perform the backup).

  • Way too much stuff, need more locations

Yes, I have a 1TB drive - that's too full. I had to move a lot of stuff to a new 1TB drive. In order to find the moved stuff I have to go one by one to 'locate' and all is good in the world. Is there an easier way? Because I would LOVE to know it. Apologies if this has been answered before, I searched and couldn't find.

    *Adding new items/removing orphans*
Try iTunes Folder Watch or iTunes Library Updater. Folder Watch is much faster on the adding files front, can be set to run in the background and includes a useful exclusion feature, however it’s really slow at removing orphans. iTLU is better for this although doing it manually after looking at a list of proposed removals generated by Folder Watch is probably faster still. iTLU can also be set to update iTunes when you've used 3rd party tools to change tag info.

  • What are smart mailboxes and why do i need both smart and "normal" ones?

What are smart mailboxes and why do I need both smart and "normal" mailboxes?

    Hi Kingoftypos,
Thanks for that clarification. So, now it appears that the ultimate purpose of a Smart Mailbox is to point to all emails that meet the criteria in a single place, so if they are spread among several mailboxes, you will be able to see them all together. Here is an article from Apple that describes it:
A Smart Mailbox displays in one location messages that are stored in other mailboxes, so you don’t have to move messages between mailboxes. The messages displayed by a Smart Mailbox are based on criteria you define, and are automatically updated to include new messages that match your criteria. For example, you might create a Smart Mailbox that displays all messages found in all mailboxes from a specific sender.
If you change a message in a Smart Mailbox, such as marking the message as read or unread, or moving or deleting the message, the change is reflected in the mailbox where the message is actually stored.
So, adam, I would think that, if you had mail going to a lot of different places, and wanted to be able to see a particular set of those in a single place, you would use a smart mailbox. Maybe use the rules to direct your mail to different places to start with, but a smart mailbox to bring a set of common ones all together into a single smart mailbox?
Maybe you have Rules move your Amazon mail to an Amazon folder and your Apple mail to an Apple folder, but then you have a Smart Mailbox that contains any mail that has the word "Receipt" in the Subject line?
    Just a thought....
    Cheers,

  • Smart Mailboxes utilizing label color?

Was wondering if anyone knew if it is possible to create a smart mailbox that can utilize the 'label color' information? I have a bunch of rules set up that color code my messages, but I would like to have a smart mailbox that can pick out the different colors. I don't see this as an option in the smart mailbox criteria, but I didn't know if anyone knew of a way around it...perhaps a third part app or a terminal 'defaults' option.
    Thanks for your help.

Sadly, color-enhanced categories or labels seem to be quite lacking in both address book and in mail.

  • Nest Smart Mailboxes?

I would like to create a smart mailbox with a number of smart mailboxes nested within it. The Mail help menu suggests this can be done, however, it escapes me. The exact words from the Mail help menu under the organize smart mailboxes topic are:
"As with regular mailboxes, you can 'nest' Smart Mailbox folders by creating new Smart Mailbox folders within existing Smart Mailbox folders."
I cannot drag them onto other smart mailboxes, and cannot find any options when creating a new smart mailbox to do this. Am I missing something?

When you create a new smart mailbox you must have the one it will nest in selected. This is the usual procedure for nesting mailboxes. I haven't carried this right through to test whether it works for smart mailboxes but it does for ordinary mailboxes.

  • Smart Mailbox needs "include Junk Mail Folder" option, seeking work-around

For me it's convenient to have a Smart Mailbox defined simply by "Message is new", as this collects together in one place all the unread messages that I've set rules to put in different mailboxes. While there is an option on the panel for defining Smart Mailboxes to include Trash or Sent in the smart-search, there is no such option to include the Junk mail folder, which I would like to do for a while until I believe it has "learned" well enough what I consider junk or not.
(Apple, take note: If Trash is an option, Junk should be, too!)
Any suggestions for a good work-around? Thanks!

    Hello burkeware,
I suggest you send feedback to Apple by filling out the [Feedback Form|http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html>. Maybe they'll incorporate these options in a future version of Mail.

PS: Concerning your "complex criteria". Have you already tried the boolean operators "or" and "not" in the search field? (BTW, two search strings are by default combined with the "and" operator, so there is no need for a separate "and".)

  • I need to transfer the Smart Mailboxes I have set up on one computer to another computer. Both are running 10.8.4 and Mail 6.3. None of the old solutions are viable since there is no longer a 'Mail' folder in the User account.

I acquired a new iMac, and need to transfer the Smart Mialboxes I have set up on my Mac Pro to the iMac. Mail is already set up to sync thorough iCloud, but the Smart mailboxes are - apparently - set up for individual machines. The only solutions I have been able to locate involve moving Preference files from one machine to the other; the problem is that there is no longer a 'Mail' folder set up for individual Users (actually there is no Mail folder at ALL under 10.8.4), and I am unable to locate any .plist files for Mail at all. Any idea how to make this haoppen?

Create a new smart mailbox. Does it sync? If not, do as below.
    Back up all data.
    1. Triple-click the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Mail/Bundles
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Open
from the contextual menu. A folder may open, or you may get an error message that the item can't be found. Either result is normal. If the folder does open and has contents, move the contents to the Desktop. Relaunch Mail and test. If there's no change, put the contents of the folder back and quit Mail again.
    2. Repeat with this line:
    /Library/Mail/Bundles
This time you may be prompted for your login password when you remove the items. Make sure they're removed from the folder and not just copied to the Desktop. If necessary, copy them first and then move the originals to the Trash.

  • Can I sync Mailboxes? Or do they need to be Smart Mailboxes?

    Hi all,
Awhile back (sometime during OSX 10.3 or so), I set up several different mailboxes in Mail to help me organize my emails. For example, I have one mailbox dedicated to receipts that have been emailed to me, which I keep indefinitely for tax purposes. Another mailbox is for a certain email discussion list I belong to, in which I keep certain emails with information I'd like to keep on hand.
Now, fast forward to today. I use both my G4 iMac and my Intel iMac to check for mail. And, of course, my inboxes are perfectly synchronized. However, not so with my mailboxes. For example, if, on my G4, I drag an emailed receipt from my inbox to my "receipts" mailbox, the email doesn't show up at all when I open up Mail on my Intel iMac, since it's no longer in my Inbox. So, there's no way to access the receipt from that computer. I have to boot up my G4 iMac to access that particular email.
Is there a way to sync my mailboxes up? Or do I need to periodically archive my mailboxes on one computer and restore those archives on my other computer to do a type of "manual sync" between the two computers?
Or, should I just change them all over to Smart Mailboxes? Smart Mailboxes will sync up automatically won't they? And I can drag emails from my inbox to a smart mailbox, right?
    Thanks for your help!
    Kevin

The answer should actually be in your Mail's built in Help system.
Assuming you're using a MobileMe email account it's very easy to keep your folders in sync as long as you use IMAP. I may be wrong but it sounds like the mailboxes you're trying to sync are in fact stored on your Mac and not in the server. in the list of mailboxes in Mail do you see the mailboxes listed under "MY MOBILEME" or "ON MY MAC"?
Smart mailboxes are just mailboxes that automatically gather together emails that match the criteria specified by you.
In Apple Mail Help search for "mailboxes" for lots of info about mailboxes, including syncing. Also search for "IMAP" if you don't know what that is.
If you're using another email service other than MobileMe then you can still do the automatic syncing of mailboxes if IMAP is supported. Gmail for example supports it.

  • Lost messages when moving from smart mailbox to gmail mailbox located on my mac

I tried to move all my messages from a smart mailbox to my gmail account mailbox in mail and now all of the messages are lost.  My mailbox says I have more messages than I can see.  Can't find in other mailboxes or in trash.  HELP!

Thank you Alberto for your quick reply and suggestion.
I am looking though for something that will run in the background and will store the "Archived" emails still within the Mail App.
Basically just moving old emails from the live IMAP mailbox to the "On My Mac" portion but maintain it's relative folder location.
The App you recommended, I'm afraid is a bit overkill for my users.
    Any other suggestions?

  • Easily Add Criteria (Edit) to Smart Mailbox

Is there any way to easily add more criteria to a smart mailbox? I have a smart mailbox set up for advertisements. When I receive a new one not already configured in the smart mailbox, I want a way to add it, easily. I can't drag and drop the message onto the smart mailbox, or even have the sender info appear in the smart mailbox edit. Is there anything out there, even third party, that has this feature?
    Thanks!

I think I see what the problem was.
I was used to having a mailbox with rules to move any message to particular box.  With that rule in place, the messages no longer show up in the Inbox.  With Smart Mailbox, the messages can be found in the smart mailbox but also still exist in the Inbox.  That is what was confusing me.
    Thanks for your help,
    Boris

  • How do you make smart mailbox sorting options persistent?

I have a smart mailbox that I would like to sort based on flags, and I would like for this selection to persist from session to session. I thought I remembered this working in Lion, but for some reason it's not working for me in Mountain Lion:
In the smart mailbox I can select "sort by flags," and this sorting option will persist next time I start mail -- but only if I have selected the smart mailbox when I close mail. If I have one of the other mailboxes opened when I close mail (say the Inbox), then the sorting of my smart mailbox defaults back to "sort by date."
Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

You only have to right click on this folder and edit the smart folders rules.
Edit: Nevermind, you mean sorting with this pop-up menu. I didn't read exactly what you mean. For this I don't know what to do.

  • Compound criteria for smart mailboxes?

I would like to create a smart mailbox with compound rules such as:
(To contains "x"  AND Subject contains "y") OR (From contains "z")
Is this possible?  If so, how is it done?  Is there a manual or web page that explains how to do this?
Sorry for the elementary question, but I'm new to Mac Mail.
P.S.  Another way I could handle the same need (for me) would be to have mail rules that apply to outgoing e-mails, not just received e-mails.  My understanding from other posts I've seen is that this did not exist in the past.  Has that been changed?

  • Need smart mailboxes on iPad similar to mac. Any app?

I need to hunt down very specific mails from hundreds.
What my research tells me is it NOT NOT possible as of now,
except the lame "smart" mailboxes that came up with ios 7.
'cc' and 'with attachments' are smart?! Wake up apple!
I would be happy if someone can suggest an app that would do the trick.
Keeping my fingers crossed for iPad "pro" to come to resque.
