Smart mailboxes: deleting

Hi. I have a smart mailbox that I can't delete. When I attempt to delete it still shows up. It was created in error during the move from .mac to mobileme. Any ideas about how to get rid of it? Thanks in advance.

If the Smart Mailbox is syncing, then you would need to turn off syncing, delete those messages for that folder in MobileMe, then delete the Smart Mailbox from Mail.

  • What is Behavior for Smart Mailbox message retention/deletion?

When (how long) do Smart Mailboxes delete their mail? Mine seem to last only a day or a week. It's impossible to tell. I don't see anywhere that I can set the preference.
    Thanks

Smart Mailboxes don't do anything to messages except list them. The messages must reside somewhere else. If the message is deleted from wherever it lives, or if it no longer satisfies the search criteria that define the Smart Mailbox, it will no longer appear. For example, suppose the Smart Mailbox specifies "unread" messages. Once the message has been read, it will not appear in that Smart Mailbox the next time it is opened.

  • Smart Mailbox Weirdness

Weird problem since upgrade to 10.6.4, my smart mailboxes are retaining Mobileme deleted messages that don't appear in the main inbox. Have tried rebuilds, deleting the smart mailboxes, deleting trash etc, but the messages remain in the smart mailbox....
    All ideas appreciated!

No, the messages have even been cleared out of Trash, but still appear in smart mailboxes! I think I've narrowed it down to emails that are deleted using an iPhone, so, when an email is deleted from the iPhone, it deletes from the main 'MobileMe' inbox, but still appears in smart mailboxes (my wife shares an alias on my account, so I use smart mailboxes to filter out our mails)

  • OSX 10.9.2 mail smart mailbox no longer work.

I have 4 smartmailboxes, unread, Today, This Week & Last Week.
They have been working fine until today. Now they remain empty no matter what.
I have : deleted and recreated the smart mailboxes
deleted and recreated the email accounts - one by one (there is an iCloud account + an Exchnage account)
created a new user and setup both accounts individually, each time creating new smartmailboxes
deleted the accounts and tried an alternative iCloud account, again creating a new smartmailbox
Nothing I do gets the smartmailboxes to function. They remain empty no matter what I do.

  • Can't Delete/Rename Smart Mailbox

I don't seem to be able to rename or delete smart mailboxes in mail. I control-click to choose Rename or Delete, I can temporarily change the name or remove the mailbox,  but after quitting and relaunching mail the old smart mailbox with the old name is still there. Happens on both my laptop and desktop, both running 10.9.2.

    Lisa,
Open the Inbox of only the main account, click on Mailbox in the menubar, and choose Rebuild. During Rebuild all messages will disappear from the list of messages, but then will reappear when Rebuild finishes.
You may want to make a backup copy of the Mail folder, for peace of mind before doing this. In the Finder, open Home/Library and find the Mail folder (Home is the folder that opens when you click on the Icon of a House in the Sidebar to the Finder window, btw), Control-click over the Mail folder, choose Duplicate, and then drag the resulting copy to the Desktop strictly for temporary backup.
Have you ever used the command to Erase Deleted Message, btw?

  • Can't delete smart mailbox

I have a number of old smart mailboxes that I've been trying to delete.  When I delete them ('control-click, delete mailbox), they disappear.  No error messages, etc.
About a minute later, though, they just reappear.
    Any thoughts?

If you go to option two, hold down the option key while using the Finder "Go To Folder" command. Enter ~/Library/Mail/V2.
If you prefer to make your user library permanently visible, use the Terminal command found below.
    http://osxdaily.com/2011/07/04/show-library-directory-in-mac-os-x-lion/
You might want to bookmark the command. I had to use it again after I installed 10.8.2. I have also been informed that if you drag the user library to Finder it will remain visible.

  • Will deleting the inbox anf inbox.msf files within the smart mailboxs folder delete any emails in my unified folders?

I have three accounts set up in Thunderbird, two are unified and the third one isn't. I've looked through the setting in the tools-account settings for each of the three accounts but I cannot see anything that refers to unified folders. I have the view-folders button set to on.
I've seen a solution on your forums which reads:-
Help menu (Alt +H) > troubleshooting information Click the show folder button.
    Close Thunderbird
open the mail folder open the smart mailboxes folder
Delete the inbox and inbox.msf files
    Restart Thunderbird.
I don't understand why this solution should make all my inbox's unified, and I don't want to loose any emails.
    Can anybody help please?
    Response appreciated.

    Bonjour Crumbleey,
Excuse me, I don't understand your problem ... Can you describe it and tell me what you want to get ?
I have been using Thunderbirds for years now, I installed it in many PCs, I solved many problems using only the standard possibilities of Thunderbird, I never had any need to intervene in the emails files and folders.
If you want to delete an account which has its own set of folders, if you want to keep its emails, first move the emails in Local folders.

  • Can't delete smart mailboxes...

I have some smart mailboxes that I can't seem to delete.  I delete them, and they disappear... and then they reappear, right back in the same place.
They were created some time ago – when I was using Lion, I beleive – and I'm wondering if they are somehow corrupted.
    Any ideas?

Before getting too involved on trying to fix this, start with simple things. Disable any extensions or add ons to mail and try. You could create a new user account for testing. Log into the new user account and add the mail account there and test. If it works there, then the problem lies within your user folder. We can go from there.
You could also do some simple maintenance first. Open Disk Utility and select your boot volume. Repair permissions and restart the computer and test.
You can carry the permission repair a bit further. Disk Utility only repairs global permissions. Follow the steps here to repair User Permissions.

Before doing anything, be sure you have a backup in case problems occur.

  • Moving to iCloud will delete my Smart Mailboxes?

Currently, I read that moving to iCloud will delete all of my Smart Mailboxes. I have about 40 of them and I own a business and this feature helps me organize my emails. I haven't moved to iCloud for this reason. They say the deadline is June 30th. Is there any way that Apple will leave this feature in once I move to iCloud?

I was about to finally update to iCloud when I froze seeing the "Smart Mailboxes" listed on the warnings...I spent 10 minutes on chat with Apple Support...and they too told me that Smart Mailboxes were not working with iCloud and (believe it or not) referred me to THIS PAGE in the forums for a more complete answer!  Anyway...in reading that some have updated to iCloud and still have Smart Mailboxes that work (and asking the Chat person whether that would extend after June 30...to which she didn't have an answer!#$%*#@#$!!!! - who have they turned into....Miscrosoft????)  ANYWAY...I went back, slowed down and actually READ the warning (and the Learn More link) and I believe the answer is that they will no longer SYNC after iCloud.  It didn't make sense to me that iCloud could interfere with the workings of the Mail Application itself...but I'll be interested to see other responses.  For now, I believe that the issue is not that they will be DELETED...but they WILL NOT SYNC.  Will be happy to hear from other users.....
Smart mailboxes don't 'sync' in Lion, just as they did not 'sync' in Snow Leopard. A smart mailbox is merely a saved search, no mail is actually in it. Your smart mailbox searches should transfer to iCloud but even if they don't you can just make them again.

  • How do I restore a deleted smart mailbox OS 10.6?

I'd like to restore a deleted smart mailbox in OS 10.6 - I have a Time Machine back-up, can I find the smart mailbox there?

I would also prefer the gaelic script, instead of the default latin one.
The tech specs for OS X lists the 18 languages in which the UI is localized:
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/specs.html
Unfortunately gaelic is not yet among them. You can ask Apple for this here:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html
Putting gaelic at the top of the list in system prefs/language & text/languages cannot affect the OS UI, but will ensure that any app you install which does include a gaelic localization will display that way, and should also make gaelic the the default spell checker (if you install one) and make files sort in gaelic sort order.

  • Delete Smart Mailbox -"Mail With Attachments''

If I delete my Smart Mailbox "Mail with Attachments" will the original emails be deleted in the other mailboxes? My OS is Tiger 10.4.11
    Thank you.

    In a word, no.
Messages in a Smart mailbox include, or are a pointer to the original message in the originating mailbox only. You can delete a message from a Smart mailbox, and the original message in the originating mailbox will also be deleted, but the same does not apply when deleting an entire Smart Mailbox.

  • Deleting the Smart Mailbox Heading

I started creating Smart Mailboxes when I realized I really wanted to create Rules. So, I deleted all the individual Smart Mailboxes I created but the Smart Mailbox Heading with the flippy triangle on the left side remains. I don't think it was there before I created my first Smart Mailbox. I'd like to delete that heading as well. Any suggestions?

Well, I stopped trying to delete the heading in the Sidebar after deleting all the individual Smart Mailboxes and put the computer to sleep. I returned a few hours later, looked at the Sidebar-and it was gone! No splainin', Lucy, but I'm not complainin' either.
    Thanks for your input.

  • Automatically delete Smart Mailbox contents?

Does anyone know of an easy way to automatically delete all messages within a specific Smart Mailbox when Mail is opened? I found an Automator action for selecting Smart Folder contents in the Finder, but nothing for Smart Mailboxes.
    Thanks,
    Sky

    Hi Dan,
Thanks for the speedy reply. I do understand the difference between smart mailboxes and real folders, and I suppose either could work for my application. What I'm looking for is an add-on like Johan Carlsson's Get Smart Folder Contents Automator add-on (http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/automator/getsmartfoldercontents.html) that works instead with Smart Mailboxes.
Setting up a rule in Mail.app will not work for me as I'm using SpamSieve and have the Junk filters disabled, so again it would have to be an Automator add-on that processes local mail folders.
    Regards,
    Sky
