Smart Mailboxes utilizing label color?

Was wondering if anyone knew if it is possible to create a smart mailbox that can utilize the 'label color' information? I have a bunch of rules set up that color code my messages, but I would like to have a smart mailbox that can pick out the different colors. I don't see this as an option in the smart mailbox criteria, but I didn't know if anyone knew of a way around it...perhaps a third part app or a terminal 'defaults' option.
Thanks for your help.

Sadly, color-enhanced categories or labels seem to be quite lacking in both address book and in mail.

  • Smart Search on Label Color

    In Tiger, I used smart search folders based on assigned color label to organize searches. It appears the capability to filter/search on the color label is no longer there. Am I missing something? Anyone have a work around?

    Maybe my description was not precise enough. Here it goes step by step:
    - In Finder go to the folder where you like to search in, probably your home
    - Command-F to go into "find mode"
    - Open the popup "Kind" on top left
    - Choose "Other..." -> a panel rolls down
    - Enter "label" into the search field (w/o quotes)
    - Select the found entry "File label", check "In Menu" if you like
    - Click OK -> the label color selector appears ...
    - select color and Spotlight starts searching

  • Can't get smart mailboxes to work with "message has flag = color"

    I'm trying to set up a Smart Mailbox that will find all the messages to which I've assigned a green flag.  This should be easy, right?
    Unfortunately, this isn't working -- I definitely have messages with green flags in my inbox, but they're not being collected into the smart mailbox.
    I've also tried this:
    but it doesn't work either.
    Is this broken in Mavericks?  Am I doing something wrong?

    Re Eric: Arggh -- the first image (which went into the comment form but didn't show up) was of the "create smart mailbox" dropdown, which tested "match all rules: message has flag = green".  The second image tested "match all rules: message is flagged & message has flag = green".
    Re William: I'd like to have one smart mailbox for green flags and another for purple flags.  The colors here were just meant to be examples.

  • Smart Collections By Label Name

    Since we have the ability to have multiple label sets, I think it would be better if we could use label names to create smart collections instead of just label colors.

    Works for me. I use it to have Smart Collections of my SmugMug Galleries. Do 'Label Text' 'Contains'
    . In the image Metadata fill in Label under Rating. I have scads of them and use Collection Sets to emulate the online hierarchy.

  • Mail VIP list not showing "all VIPs" or useable in Smart mailboxes

    Hi there,
    I thought I'd give the Mail app a go again in Yosemite after abandoning it when it all went horribly wrong in Mavericks.
    I can't get the VIP list to work properly though. I have VIPs and I can open the VIP list to select an individual VIP (I have about 50) but I want to click on the main VIPs label to see mails from all VIPs. Specifically, I want to limit to the view to Inbox Only, so I can see all messages from any VIP that is currently in my inbox. The problem is, no mail shows when clicking on the main VIPs label, only when I click on individual VIP names. Also, if I create a Smart mailbox, using Sender is VIP, nothing works (no mails are found). I can still select multiple individual VIPs out of the list and that will show them all, but it's a pain and just doesn't seem like the right thing to do. in iOS, tapping on the VIP inbox, lists all mails from VIPs, why not on the mac too?
    Anyone else having the same problems?
    As a further clue. When you click on one mail box to another, the list of mails instantly changes to show the mails in the new mailbox. This is true if you click from an individual mailbox to the 'group' one. But, if I click from any mail box (that is showing mail) to the mail VIPs group, then the mails from the previous mailbox are still shown, ie the view doesn't re-fresh. I have to click on the main VIPs tab twice to get the mail list to refresh (which then refreshes to an empty list due to the problem above).
    This is driving me mad!

    I have worked this out for myself and fixed the problem.
    It's down to a bug in Mail (or possibly Spotlight). I had a VIP with an apostrophe in her email address which Mail wasn't handling properly and it was causing the search query to fail. Removing that contact from the VIP list fixed my issue.
    Technically, what's happening is that the code wasn't "escaping" this special character and that was causing a syntax error in the search query.

  • Smart mailbox issues with "any recipient" or "from" in 10.4.11, mail 2.1.3

    smart mailbox isn't reacting to its rules correctly. I have added a new group in adressbook then created a smart mailbox with "sender is member of group" and set the group accordingly. No joy.
    I also tried right clicking an adress in a message and choosing "create smart mailbox". The rule is: from, contains, "adress that i right-clicked". no joy.
    am i missing something?

    Good news, great to hear!
    But with the problems you ebded up with, at the very least do this...
    Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), off the HD & use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, reboot once more.

  • Follow-up Rule + smart mailbox

    Hello,
    I'm trying to set up a smart mailbox in which are all emails I sent but that need follow-up (they are not replied to, or I replied again and still was for reply). What I tried to do is create a rule in which every email 'from' '@my-simpatico.com' should be 'flagged'. Then I set up a smart mailbox that collects 'flagged' messages. Unfortunately it doesn't work - I don't get these messages flagged. I only get them flagged when I send to one of the email accounts which are setup in my Mac Mail. Anyone with a solution please?

    ok, the following should do it (more or less).
    paste the following into script editor and save it as a script.
    <pre style="
    font-family: Monaco, 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;
    font-size: 10px;
    margin: 0px;
    padding: 5px;
    border: 1px solid #000000;
    width: 720px;
    color: #000000;
    background-color: #ADD8E6;
    overflow: auto;"
    title="this text can be pasted into the Script Editor">
    tell application "Mail"
    set flagged status of every message of sent mailbox whose date sent is greater than (current date) - 5* minutes to true
    end tell</pre>
    then download and install [cronnix|http://homepage.mac.com/aamann/Mail_Scripts.html] and set it to run this script every 5 minutes. The script is pretty self explanatory I hope. you can adjust the number 5 as you like. It will work ok so log as you don't unflag messages too quickly. If you do they might get reflagged when the script runs next time.
    P.S. Actually, use [lingon|http://lingon.sourceforge.net> rather than cronnix to schedule it.
    you can save the script either as an application (in this case simply drag it to line 2 in lingon) or as a script. in this case line 2 in should look like this:
    osascript path/to/script
    where path/to/script is the full path to your script.

  • Are mailboxes and smart mailboxes really missing?

    Just got my new iPad. Set up mail. Am I missing something, or is creating mailboxes and smart mailboxes really absent here? If so, then it's really not going to be possible for me to jettison my laptop top as I was hoping to do. In which case, color me majorly disappointed.

    Thanks for confirming that I wasn't missing some in context aspect. (I see from another reply that it may be possible to set up Mailboxes within Mobile Me and have them appear on the iPad). As to research, I assumed in buying at this early stage that it would be evolving -- and that Apple will be watching closely to see which additional features to tweak/add. So I've also gone to their feedback page to request this one, plus an ability to view more than 200 msgs at a time.

  • Why can't I set label color? I have write permission.

    I can't set label color on a particular file, or rename the file, or duplicate the file.
    Why not?
    I'm in an Admin account.
    Get File Info shows that the file is not locked.
    Get File Info shows that the file is readable and writeable by my account, by staff, and by everyone.
    In Terminal, "ls -l" agrees, showing that the file is readable and writable by user, group, and other.
    I have write permission to the containing folder.
    Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions didn't change the permissions.
    What else can I try?

    Might try BatchMod, it's much better/easier than the Finder for recursive Permission changes, but careful, it's powerful...
    http://www.lagentesoft.com/batchmod/index.html
    Once open, drop that folder on it's icon, change rights, Apply to all within.

  • Smart mailbox emails are empty

    I created a couple of Smart Mailboxes and when I click on many of the emails in the folders, they are empty.
    When I go to the same emails in the InBox all the inforamtion can be seen.
    What am I missing?
    Thanks.

    Hi Cliff,
    I haven't tried this on 10.6.x yet, so not certain, but this can fix myriad Mail problems in 10.4.x/10.5.x...
    Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup),  it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go, run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move this folder & file to the Desktop.
    Move this Folder to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/
    Move this file to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
    Reboot.
    If that doesn't do it and you can afford to redo all your Rules, try these & reboot...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/MessageRules.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/MessageRules.plist.backup

  • Smart mailbox critera: specific account?

    I use smart mailboxes extensively, and I love them. But I can't seem to figure out this one issue.
    I have two different Gmail IMAP accounts from two different Google Apps domains. I would like to make a smart mailbox that only searches through one particular account. SMs seem to be limited to particular mailboxes, but I have several different mailboxes (Gmail labels) on the server, and rather than list all the mailboxes, I'd like to make one of the criteria "Message is in ACCOUNT" (rather than "Message is in mailbox").
    Seems an easy feature. Am I missing something somewhere?

    Thank you for the suggestion, but as long as there's no parentheses in search criteria, it won't work for me.
    For example, what I need is
    email_account==work&&status==unread
    If I say
    +mailbox==work || mailbox==work_requests || mailbox==work_meetings && status==unread+
    it won't work unless I can use parentheses, which I do not believe is possible with Mail.app.
    I've submitted this as a feature request. Seems like an omission.

  • Can't delete smart mailboxes...

    I have some smart mailboxes that I can't seem to delete.  I delete them, and they disappear... and then they reappear, right back in the same place.
    They were created some time ago – when I was using Lion, I beleive – and I'm wondering if they are somehow corrupted.
    Any ideas?

    Before getting too involved on trying to fix this, start with simple things. Disable any extensions or add ons to mail and try. You could create a new user account for testing. Log into the new user account and add the mail account there and test. If it works there, then the problem lies within your user folder. We can go from there.
    You could also do some simple maintenance first. Open Disk Utility and select your boot volume. Repair permissions and restart the computer and test.
    You can carry the permission repair a bit further. Disk Utility only repairs global permissions. Follow the steps here to repair User Permissions.
    http://www.macissues.com/2014/04/11/how-to-fix-home-folder-permissions-in-os-x/
    Before doing anything, be sure you have a backup in case problems occur.

  • What's the difference between Smart Mailboxes and Rules?

    I want to segrate all the spam I get from Apple and others from my real email. I can do this with Smart Mailboxes or Rules (move to mailbox). What is the difference as far as results? Is there any? Advantages and disadvantages?
    Thanks!

    Smart Mailboxes don't have actions attatched. Basicly, a search feature showing results. You attatch certain criteria to them for what you want to see. They are useful if you have a lot of mail and want to quickly view certain criteria like a certain sender, over a certain age, etc. The messages remain in their original mailbox.
    Example: message recieved greater that 365 days. Shows all messages in this criteria for the mailboxes included in the criteria. Messages can be selected and for instance, deleted from there.
    Rules are applied to messages downloaded to your inbox. Rules are made for specific criteria you choose, and then you create an action for those messages in that rule.
    Example: Criteria-Message from people in my address book ** Action- Set font color to blue.  Any message downloaded to your inbox from people in your address book will have a blue font color.
    If you choose a move action, then the message will be actually moved from the inbox to whatever you specify.
    You can create a rule and look at the criteria you can set and the actions you can perform.

  • How can I get a view of what's not in any smart mailbox?

    I want to see basically my inbox, only with all of the things being displayed in my smart mailboxes HIDDEN. I don't see an option for this. I tried creating a smart inbox, but there's no way to create the inverse of my smart mailboxes because the rules don't seem to allow it. Is there any way to do this or am I out of luck?
    Thanks,
    Jon

    Thanks. Yeah, smart mailboxes being sort of filtered views of your INBOX makes good sense (references not copies as you say).
    I could do what I want to do if there was either an option to hide stuff in the inbox that's in a smart mailbox OR if there were better smart mailbox rules for what to include. For example, if there was a "None" choice as well as "Any" and "All", I could create an Inbox2 that contains all the stuff that doesn't match any of the criteria for my other smart mailboxes. But it's not quite the smart. Also, I could make it work if you could include smart mailboxes in the rules themselves, but they only work with regular mailboxes. I can understand why that would not be a feature though.
    Basically, smart mailboxes are great. BUT I want to use them to reduce the clutter of my inbox, not just see a view of it. So perhaps this is a feature request. I can't see how to do what I want to do...

  • How can I convert an ordinary Mail mailbox to a smart mailbox?

    I have a large number of maiboxes all for the one account in Mail. I would like to get rid of them, preferably by changing them into smart mailboxes with the same criteria. The only way I can think of doing this is by deleting the mailboxes after moving the messages out of them then creating new smart mailboxes. That could take a very long time. Is there a way of doing this that is quicker and better? Apple Script? Automator? I don't know much about either of those, just that they exist and some programs have scripts that you can run. Grateful for assistance.

    AppleScript  <--------- CLICKY CLICK
    You can cross post there if you want to do a script for what you want to do w/your Mail.  You will NOT be violating Apple's TOU.  The experts there will provide you w/detailed instructions.
