SMART "not supported"

After a number of problems, Disk Utility is now showing my hard drive's SMART status as "not supported".
I'm assuming this is bad news.
The disk had a bad spell yesterday (see previous post) but seemed ok again in the end.
I am running Leopard on a G4 iBook. The disk is the original 40GB Toshiba disk.
Can someone advise my next step? Thanks.

For the benefit of others who may have turned this thread up in a search.
Replacement
I paid a local shop to install a 120GB drive as I was concerned about getting some of the fiddly bits wrong.
I phoned a few places and they tended to offer the service for GBP 60 - 100 + the price of the drive which varied from GBP 40 - 100 depending on the drive. Cheapest I found was GBP 80 (service) + 45 (drive), but I would have had to ship it or drive 120 miles (interested UK readers - AppleMacParts in Reading). So I paid the guys at the end of my street GBP 200 and they did it within 36 hours, starting straight away and returning it on a Saturday. This is a pretty good turnaround, I think, by any standards.
Recovery
I used a recovery programme on my corrupted backup drive which created all the files by type named sequentially. Well - better than nothing, but not exactly convenient.
More usefully, I used a little adapter gizmo called Magic Bridge to connect the (removed) internal drive via my USB port. As an external drive, I was able to copy everything across, barring one or two files. That saved me a vast amount of reinstalling/downloading.
Reinstall
Mail was the trickiest - couldn't find a way to reimport the account information. I also made the mistake of thinking I could just copy relevant files. Well I must have missed something and ended up using the 'import' function which worked.
To my surprise MS Office was happy with just copying across the applications.
I had to reinstall some fonts for Finale Songwriter.
I recovered iCal and Address Book from my phone.
So thank you Richard. I will now instigate a much more efficient backup/recovery regime.

  • Writing files is not supported on this device (smart camera 1722)

    Hi,
I have a smart camera NI 1722 and I want to save images that I aquire. I use the "IMAQ Write file 2.vi" and I always get this error: "Writing files is not supported on this device".
Is the smartcam really doesn't support to write images in a folder? I've tried to change the path (on the smartcam and on our server) but I always get the same error.
I use LabVIEW Real-Time 8.5.1, LabVIEW 8.5.1, NI Vision 8.5 etc (all the lastest versions of LabVIEW).
    Thank you for helping me,
    Stephanie

    Hello
If you already flattened the image, you can now save it on the hard disk of the smart camera.  To load the image, you will have to un-flatten with an image again.  See the attached document to see the block diagrams.
I did it for a template in a pattern matching program and worked!!!

  • Smart Wi-Fi not not supported with IE 11?

Yesterday Windows 7 installed IE 11 on my computer in the middle of the night. Now when I open Linksys Smart Wi-Fi it says "browser not supported" and I can't access my router. Compatibilty view doesn't work, either.
I called your tech support and after an excruciatingly long time on hold I was promptly told by the CSR to install Firefox or Chrome instead. I don't want to get into a browser war here and, besides, it really is nobody's business but my own what browser I choose to use.
Bottom line: her answer was totally unacceptable. I'm not installing another program just so I can access my router which worked perfectly fine in IE 10.
Will a fix be forthcoming so I can once again access my settings?

The issue is most likely with the Linksys page. I looked at part of the page and it shows that following code.
    <meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=edge,chrome=1">
Edge is the default page mode that IE 11 comes up in and somewhere in the code I'd think that the Linksys page should be doing something with the IE=edge but isn't doing it correctly.
To get around the issue for now, without installing another browser you can do the following:
Bring up your address to your router. When you get the "Browser not supported" message press F12 (if you can't press the F12 key, you can get to it off the Tools [the Gear looking icon at the top right of IE] menu.) This brings up IE development tools.
On the far left side bottom you'll see the tools, a scrolling list. Press that arrow at the bottom of the list until you get the the last icon that looks like a monitor and computer. Press that icon.
You should now see the Emulation mode with the Document Mode selected as Edge. Press on the drop down list and select 10 off the list. The page will refresh and show you the same error. You're refreshing the error page so you need to get rid of the error page part in the address so it shows just your router address in the address bar.
http://192.xxx.xxx.xxx/ui/dynamic/browser-unsupported.html   <delete /ui/dynamic/browser-unsupported.html from this so it looks like your address http://192.xxx.xxx.xxx
Your router pages should come up fine now. NOTE: do not close the F12 Developer Tools while on  the router or it will go right back to the "Browser not supported" page. If I find out how to change the default from edge to 10 without having to bring up F12 for the router address, I will update this (I haven't looked at it yet.)

  • Smart wi-fi browser not supported error by Linksys

Linksys seems to have created a doozy of an issue with this "browser not supported error" they keep displaying.  Its as if head office is oblivious to this.
I am running IE 11 with all the updates applied and it gives the error.  I downloaded firefox and it gives the same error.  I downloaded Maxthon cloud browser most recent version and it does not work except when you log in with your cloud browser ID.
I have the latest version of Java  51 and cookies are enabled.
The strange thing about the Maxthon experience was when I logged out it continued to work.  but when I went to another page and came back it stopped working.
There is something screwy in the linksys firmware here.  they should have a bypass for this not so smart thing.  Its really not worth the aggravation.  Can anyone pinpoint where the issue is with this thing please?

    Have you tried this?
-start with a turned off/powered down router
-turn on your PC and clear your browser cache with the router OFF
-prior to powering up the router... remove the WAN internet cable connecting the router to the cable modem or DSL unit.
    -power on the router
-navigate to the correct ip address (probably 192.168.1.1 if there were no other routers in your network)
-now attempt to log in using the ACCESS ROUTER panel
-from now on it- local login should display as the main log in window with the smart wifi option in a panel below instead of the reverse which was the factory default.
-reconnect your wan cable and use as always.
-now the expectation is that you will always be able to log in through the ACCESS ROUTER panel locally.
Let me know if it works for you.

  • Blank grey screen & SMART Status "not supported"

    Hi,
My computer froze, I restarted it and the blank screen with blinking question mark came up. After reading a couple of posts on here I inserted my install disc and got to the Disk Utility screen. One post was talking about the "S.M.A.R.T. Status". My SMART status is "not supported". What does this mean?
And where do I go from here?
    Any help/advice greatly appreciated....Thx!

HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
    *"blinking question mark came up."*
A flashing question mark appears when you start your Mac
A flashing question mark can mean several things. One, the drive is failing or has failed. Two, it can mean your computer can't find a system folder to boot from. Try booting while holding down the Option key. That prompts the Startup Manager window.

  • I just upgraded to Lion 10.7.2 and it says that it will not support Power PC programs so my 2008 version of Mac Office and Intuit Quickbooks are blanked out.  I need these programs.  How do I proceed?

I just upgraded to Lion 10.7.2 and it says that it will not support Power PC programs and has blanked out my 2008 version of MS Office for Mac and Intuit's Quickbooks.  How do I proceed to get these programs back?

Upgrade to newer versions compatible with Lion or downgrade to Snow Leopard:
    Downgrade Lion to Snow Leopard
    1.  Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.4.1.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups, do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion files.

  • New WD Caviar Hard Drive not showing up and S.M.A.R.T. is "not supported"

Hi, hoping someone can help me out with this fairly quickly.
    I am using a Mac G5, here's the specs:
    Machine Name: Power Mac G5
    Machine Model: PowerMac7,2
    CPU Type: PowerPC 970 (2.2)
    Number Of CPUs: 1
    CPU Speed: 1.8 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
    Memory: 2.5 GB
    Bus Speed: 900 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 5.1.5f2
I bought this computer second hand. It has a 'Macintosh HD' drive and a 'Movie Drive'. The 'Movie Drive' keeps disappearing (with 70 Gigs on it) and the other 'HD' drive only has 7 Gigs left on it (from 150Gigs).
I just bought a new hard drive based on advice from this forum. I bought a WD Caviar SE16 500GB SATA2 16MB. I was told it would be compatible with this computer. This is the website and drive that I bought:
    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=331024
I took out the old Movie Drive that kept on disappearing on me (and which I had nothing on anyway) and replaced that with the new 500GB hard drive (in bay 'B'). With the intention of making this my main drive that everything would run on.
I started the computer and it didn't show up on the desktop.
I shut the computer down and inserted Disk Warrior 3. Held down 'C' on the keyboard as the computer started up. When Disk Warrior came up, I didn't have the option of rebuilding anything except the drive I had previously called 'Macintosh HD' (in bay 'A' inside the G5).
So I turned the computer off and started it again. I went into 'About this Mac', 'More info', and clicked on Serial-ATA. The TWO drives are there.
The old drive I already had in the G5 - 'Macintosh HD' - is saying:
    ST3160023AS:

    Available: 7.4 GB
    Writable: Yes
    File System: Journaled HFS+
    BSD Name: disk1s9
    Mount Point: /
    The new drive is reading:
    WDC WD5000AAKS-00A7B0:
    Capacity: 465.76 GB
    Model: WDC WD5000AAKS-00A7B0
    Revision: 01.03B01

    Detachable Drive: No

    Unit Number: 0
    Socket Type: Serial-ATA
    Bay Name: "B (lower)"
    OS9 Drivers: No
    S.M.A.R.T. status: Not Supported
I don't know what SMART status is, but I could see that one is verified and the other is unsupported. How do I make sure the new drive is supported?
    Thanks anyone!

Hi! The problem is that the drive cannot show up on the desktop until it is formatted. Read THIS on formatting. Once formatted the S.M.A.R.T. status will probably work. Tom

  • Mode Not Supported message on Sony BDPS3100 Bluray Player

    Hi,
I bought a Sony - Smart Wi-Fi Built-In Blu-ray Player Model: BDPS3100 last weekend. When I play any DVDs on this player, I get a message saying 'Mode Not Supported. Please change the resolution of the external device'. I have connected this to a Samsung 1080p LED TV through HDMI cable. I get Netflix and other apps displayed properly on the TV and it works great with Wi-Fi connectivity. The only issue is that it is not playing any DVDs. I tried playing the same DVD on my laptop and it worked. So no issues with the DVD. I tried connecting the HDMI to both HDMI1 and HDMI2 ports on the TV but still no luck. I also tried chaning the Output settings in the player to reduce the resolution to 780p and 480p as well, still no luck in playing the DVD. I have not tried a Bluray disk yet. Any pointers on how to get this fixed? Oh yeah, I've tried switching off the player and turning it on but with no luck. Read somewhere that holding the STOP button for 10 secs will make the player reset the settings and play the disk but that too didn't work. So am lost at this point on how to play DVDs on this player. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

Do you have a laptop that has an HDMI in? Probably not, but just checking.
It may be a bad laser. Try a blu ray and see if that works

That's not the video file format, that's the "file system" format on the SD card.
You need to know what the TYPE OF FILE you can't play is. The manufacturer of the camera will have documents on what types of files it can create, these are options you would set inside the camera itself.
If you copy just the video file to your computer you can try playing it in Windows Media Player.
(I have the feeling this is going to be a long discussion thread)

  • Howard Leight earmuffs not supported.

    Hey Peeps.
So here's what's happening. My workplace recently approved new ear defenders with AUX in port. Unfortunatelly every time I'm trying to connect them to my Z1 Compact, the phone says "headset not supported". I've seen other threads about headsets not being supported, and I've cleared smart connect data, rebooted the phone, but it does not help. Even connected, the music still plays from phone's speaker. Any help on this one would be much appreciated. Here's the exact model of those ear muffs:

    Thanks in advance
    Solved!

If they aren't supported then this will be a CTIA issue - Not an issue as such but the pin outs on the jack plug will be different and non compliant, You could try searching for an adapter to change the pin outs but I've not see one but then again I've never really searched for one
