Smart Object convert colors

I'm working with color proof and the result is very very important to the final work.
So I'm worried because when create a smart object from all layers in RGB mode and then convert the image to CMYK the result is a little different that if I convert a flat image. Why do this happens? And how I control to obtain the same result?
Placed a linked file has a different color result too.
I need to maintain all layers available, so I trying to work with this method.
Any answer or help?

You don’t.
At least with many possible combinations of transparencies and Blend Modes it is impossible to obtain the same result in CMYK as in RGB while maintaing the original Layer structure.

Different from embedded Smart Objects or just different from the flattened image?
To be blunt you probably don’t fully comprehend the principal difference between additive and subtractive colors.
Also are you sure your CMYK space conforms to the specific print process?

Missing frames in smart object converted video layer?

I noticed that whenever i try to convert a video layer I drew on in photoshop to a smart object, when i play it back there are empty frames! And no matter what I do I cannot get it to show the frames. Now I know the frames werent empty when i first drew on the video layers, and when i import a video into photoshop and convert it to a smart object all the frames are there. So I guess it's just an error with video layers with drawings on them done in photoshop? I tried googling every possible wording of this scenario but I found NOTHING, so can someone please help me?

after using high fidelity image trace i hit expand, then i went to layers and hit the drop arrow by my thumbnail, which then shows <Group>,hit that drop arrow and it will show a list of all your paths, the very bottom one was my white background, you can click the eye or delete that path and it disappeared for me. i was using a png file with a transparent background, and nothing else worked for me, it always converted with white background, i never saw this mentioned anywhere, and accidentally discovered it, hope it works!!!

How to avoid transparent background converting to white in smart object(psb )when image trace High Fidelity as we have the option of ignore white upto 16 colors trace.

The best option i saw was to first convert it to smart object in photoshop via Layer->Smart Objects-> Convert to smart Object. then exported it to a psb. Then i opened the file in illustrator and applied the image trace tool but the transparent background got converted to white but i had the option of ignore white upto 16 colors trace. Illustrator Smart Objects color inconsistencies

When I paste illustrator artwork into photoshop as a smart object, the colors are not reading as the same. Same sRGB profiles for both files. No tints used anywhere, 100% values used in illustrator.
Sometimes the shift is very slight. For example, C85D49 tagged in illustrator reads as c75d48 in photoshop.
Any thoughts as to why this would be?

This was created with PS CS6. I recently had to do some modifications to it, and that's when I noticed the strange behavior with SO. Of course when I tried to duplicate the weirdness this morning, I was unable to do so. I know for certain though, that on two different occasions I updated one SO layer and the it replaced the contents of a different SO layer.
I did notice some other oddities while playing with this today. Here's what I did.
Open the file, and save with a new name to make a copy.
Edit a couple SO layers with Illustrator
Close the file and save
Open the file back in PS and again edit a SO
This time when I save the SO I get this message "This file has been modified outside of Illustrator. Do you want to continue". I say yes to save it. I only get this message after I have closed the file and reopened it for more edits.
Another oddity; if I leave a SO open in Illustrator by just saving without closing the file. Then close the Photoshop file linked to that SO. When I open a new Photoshop file and try to open a SO within it, PS thinks the SO that was left open is the one I want to work on. I have to close out the previous SO to get the new one to open correctly.
I work with a lot of Illustrator SO's in PS. So I will continue to monitor what happens, and try to pay very close attention to what steps I took if and when the weirdly linked SO layers happens again.

How can I add a Smart object (button) to a quiz background and have it work?

I have the need to add button to a quiz (in Captivate 6) to allow people to leave the quiz and go back to the start page.
I realize you cant add a normal button to quiz, so I added a smart object converted to a button on the master page. I have it all set up to go to the page, mouse over shows hand and all of that.
the Captivate runs, I get to the quiz, mouse over it changes to a hand. I click and it does nothing. Any ideas why?? Any suggestions on how to do what I want?

I always look to your blog for help.   This time unfortunately it didnt help me.
as I expressed above all I am trying to do is create a button that will do a jump to page with in a quiz.
I have some long quizes in the captivate projects that I create.   Once a person starts a quiz they might realize it is a bit more than they are ready for. I am just trying to give them a way to click a buttong to get out of the quiz and back to a certain page.
On the master page for the quiz, I created a smart object (rectangle) that is converted to a button it is also transparent and goes over top of a graphic for the button.
I tell it to go to the correct page, and I set it up so that when you mouse over the smart object it shows a hand
When I go to preview this, I mouse over the graphic and get the hand icon, but when I click it goes no where. It seems to me that the quiz is waitting for an answer before it will accept the click.   The catch is when I give the answer it forgets click and moves on the the next question.
Any thoughts?

Basic Smart Objects

1. In CS5, If I drag a layer from one file to another, does PS always place the image as a smart object into the new file?
2. I understand that the idea behind smart objects is that I can edit the smart object without making permanent changes, though what does that really mean? I could always go back to the new layer and revert it to the way it was when I first dragged it in?

1) No. Use File > Place to place a doc as a smart object, or convert the dragged layer to a smart object using Layer . Smart Object > Convert to smart object.
2) For resizing the smart object layer, that would be a way of thinking of them. Another thought would be filters applied to smart objects are editable, so you can change their settings if, and when, you need. You can also stack smart filters on top of each other, which can be quite useful. Yes, you can revert the new layer, just open the smart object (SO) and copy/paste out the original layer.
An example would be a square sheet of paper with type on it that you've made into an SO and then warped to make it look like it's fluttering in the wind. You can open the SO and add more type to the piece of paper -- the type you add is typeset with straight baselines, but the final object has those curves you desired (and got just right) -- maybe some rotation or even a blur to simulate depth-of-field. Decide you'd like to make that paper the constitution? Just copy and paste a pic of the constitution into the SO and presto! It's a-fluttering.

Vector smart object from PS to AI

Is it possible to copy a vector smart pbject from PS to AI? Note from PS to AI? HAve tried dragging and dropping... it doesn't seem to work.

If I'm understanding your original question, this answer is not correct. I had the same question as your original. "copying a vector smart object from PS to AI?"
This is the problem I was having and I only found one way to solve it. Would love it if someone could give me a quicker workflow. My solution seem tedious.
RECAP:
Problem: Vector object was originally created in photoshop and I want to bring it into AI as vector art.
Answer:
1. Convert the "vector object" in Photoshop to a "Smart Object" by selecting the layer, then go to Layer > Smart Objects > Convert to Smart Object
2. Double-click on the smart object's icon in the layers palette. This opens the object in a new Photoshop window
3. Choose File > Export > Paths to Illustrator... (Note: With the smart object layer selected, you can switch over to the "Paths" tab and see your object's editable path and name)
Again, I may have misunderstood your original question, but what I've listed here is the only way I've been able to bring a vector object originated in Photoshop over to Illustrator. Pain in the ***.

AP2-Photoshop CS3 - Open as "Smart Object"

Good evening,
Users of Adobe Photoshop CS3 will know that there is a possibility in Adobe Camera Raw to open a RAW file as "Smart Object" (by holding down the shift key). This way one can easily copy the Smart Object, go back to Camera Raw, tweak the settings, and blend the two objects together.
I am wondering whether anyone has found a solution in Aperture 2 to open an image in Photoshop as smart object...

you can't open a file from aperture as smart object in photoshop. but as you can assign your own shortcuts to all menu commands and functions in photoshop, why not create a shortcut to convert any image layer into a smart object? (photoshop menu: layers - smart object - convert to smart object). this way, it only takes you a press of a key, and you have your smart object.
having said this, keep in mind, there is of course quite a different to raw files opened as smart objects through camera raw: if done with cr, the smart object lets you change the raw conversion again. aperture however renders a psd or tiff before sending it to photoshop. so even if you convert this to a smart object, you will not have access to the original raw file.

Smart objects and convert color profile behaviour

I get different results when converting to the same color profile before and after converting to smart object. Why?
Do the following:
1. create a cmyk document with color profile 'Euroscale Uncoated v2' and fill the document with the color 86, 32, 14, 0
2. change the color profile to 'Euroscale Coated v2' -> the values change to 73, 29, 16, 0, no color change on the monitor
3. create a smart object -> the values stay the same, no color change on the monitor
4. create a second document like in step 1
5. create a smart object -> the values stay the same, no color change on the monitor
6. now change the color profile to 'Euroscale Coated v2' -> the values stay the same, this time we have a color change on the monitor
Why don't I get the same result?

I found this topic looking for an answer to this exact same problem.
Many of you refer to it as a bug / unexpected behaviour, which i thought it was either. But after some tests, it seems very logical behaviour actually to me now.
It simply follows the rules in the color settings.
In "Color Management Policies", when CMYK is set to "Preserve Embedded Profiles", it keeps the CMYK numbers for smart objects. Setting this to "Convert to Working CMYK" would make the color conversion as expected.
However, i don't think this would be a good idea (depending on your workflow offcourse). For example, pasting a 100K shape from a coated.icc illustrator file into an uncoated.icc photoshop file, as a smart object, would convert the 100K (not keeping the CMYK numbers).
I guess the workarround with a CMYK smart object into an RGB smart object (or maybe LAB), is ok to use when CMYK to CMYK conversion is really necessary for smart objects.

PMS color in a vector smart object

How do I retain a spot color in a vector smart object placed in Photoshop. Once the SO is updated within the PS file, the separations palette does not reflect the change, and the spot color is no longer there.

I thank everyone for their input, I guess I should have provided a little more information:
The file supplied by a client. Is an Illustrator file. Within this AI file is a PSD file. An element in the PSD file is a vector smart object, which needs to have a PMS color applied. I can apply a PMS color to the SO, then save and update the PSD, then update the link in the AI file, but the color converts back to 4C, and the spot color is lost. I cannot come up with a way to maintain the spot color in the SO. I was thinking of just taking the SO out of the PSD altogether, and placing it in the final AI doc, but there are some PS effects applied to it that I cannot reproduce in AI. For added difficulty, the PSD cannot be flattened, because it has some pretty crafty transparancy masking in it. I would love to provide the file itself, but for security reasons, I am unable to do so.

I also have a problem to paint or clone on a blank video layer created in Photoshop. It tells me the time is beyond the target frame time, I don't understand the message. How do I (or can I) convert an embedded smart object into a linked smart object

If I start with an embedded Smart Object (S.O)., can I easily convert in into a linked type of S.O.? I have not seen this feature available in the tooling yet. Please advise.

Since an embedded smart object is, well, embedded, there's no way to just convert. You'll have to point a link somewhere.
If you want to keep the smart object as is, open it and "Save As" to a new location, then link to that (Place Linked). Then delete the old.

Convert an embedded smart object to a linked smart object

love the new "linked smart object" functionality. However, I can not figure out how I can convert (or export) an existing embedded smart object to a linked smart object.
I have a huge photoshop file with several embedded smart objects that I would like to break down into a lightweigt photoshop with with links to the varios smart object photoshop files.
Is there any way to do this?

I am just now putting a document together with linked smart objects and I'm noticing that the file size of the PSD file still increases quite a bit. I thought the hole point of this was to have lightweigh psd files?
I currently have 11 1920x1080 linked smart object files in the PSD and the file size is already at 140MB. Any ideas why this is happening?

Photoshop CC 2014 - Stack Mode Disabled - Load Image Into Stack Has No "Convert To Smart Object" Option

The 512 MB are a minimum requirement, not some optional thing. Without it, 3D will never work.
