Smart Object goes to Preview not Illus

I recently upgraded to Maverick.  I have found to my frustration that when I click on an Illustrator file that it opens as a pic in Mac's Preview - which I don't want.  Now, worst of all, if I click on a smart object in Photoshop it should take me to Illustrator, but now it goes to Preview.  I assume we have experienced this at this point, but I couldn't find any discussions related to this issue.
Anyone have a clue as to how to fix this issue other than dump Preview?
Thanks,
Ron

If anyone else has this issue, I found the solution in Apple Forums.
If you have a Photoshop file that has a Smart Object which defaults to Preview, get out of the file.  At the Photoshop file icon, right click it (or control click if you are still clinging to that old single clicker) and choose Get Info.  In this file, towards the bottom of the page there is a button called Open With - choose Photoshop. Oh! Also, before closing out, be sure to click on another button just below this that says Always Open With (or something to that effect).  Close your Get Info window and open your Photoshop file.  Now, when you double click the Smart Object icon it should open the Smart Object in Illustrator.
Yeah!!!!

  • Edit smart object open in preview and not ai...

    Hello,
Al working on a layout with CS4 master collection.  In PS I pasted an ai as a smart object.... But now when I edit the smart object it opens in preview and not AI.
    Any thoughts?
    thanks

The matter has come up recently already, a forum search turns up:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/2416222#2416222
So unless updating the OS helps the problem may be persistent.
A work-around may be to Export Contents, edit in Illustrator, save that and then Replace Contents back in Photoshop.

  • How to change default HDR toning with 32 bit smart object - 16 bit, when not merging

Suppose I have just done this:
Opened a RAW file as a 16-bit smart object through camera raw, so I can easily go back and change raw parameters if needed
Converted the document to 32 bit mode
Set 32-bit preview mode to Highlight Compression
Added a Curves layer and fiddled with the sliders until satisfied
    So far so good.
Now what I would like to do is envelope/convert these two layers into a smart object, and then change the mode to 16 bit with a Highlight compression method, but WITHOUT merging the smart object. Merging leaves me with one flattened non-smart layer. Obviously I don't want to merge, because all the smartness of the previous (32 bit) smart object, and I cannot go back to the equally smart raw file.
    For a demonstration: http://tv.adobe.com/watch/russell-brown-at-photoshop-world-2011-orlando/smart-object-32-bi t-hdr-editing-techniques/
After chosing "merge layers", an impressive dialog box is displayed with 4 toning methods. When NOT merging, nothing is displayed, and Exposure/Gamma seems to be silently used. Fine in some cases, but not now. It seems one cannot change that, or choose another one of the 4 methods. But perhaps someone has figured out a way to "will" it in another direction?
    Thanks for your help!

Yes sorry about that, I may have been a bit brief indeed:
I'm using Photoshop CS5, x64, latest patch (12.0.4). And ACR 6.4.1 to open a Raw file as a smart object in Photoshop.
    Step 2: correct, I used Image->Mode->32bit
Step 3: I set the 32bit preview mode by clicking View->32-bit Preview Options->Highlight Compession
Setp 4: I'm mistaken here, I added a Levels layer, because Curves are indeed unavailable in 32 bit mode.
    While I'm at it:
Step 5: Then, I would select these 2 layers in the layers pane and convert them to a smart object (right click in layers pane -> convert to smart object)
Step 6: Next step would be Image->Mode->16-bit. It would then ask to have the layers merged or not before changing bit depth. Only if you choose merge, the HDR toning dialog box would appear, from which you can select Exposure&Gamma, Highlight Compession, Local Adaptation and so on.
I don't want to merge, because it will destroy the smart object containing the Levels layer and the original raw file (in a smart object)
So I select "Don't merge". It doesn't show the HDR toning dialog, and goes straight in 16-bit mode. But what toning mode did it choose? By comparing the result you get when not merging, to the result when one does merge, it appears a default toning mode of Exposure&gamma is chosen. That's not what I want, because I would like to have Highlight Compression.
But where can I change this behaviour?

  • FlashPaper objects OK in preview, not OK when published

Hi -- I have a Captivate 2 project that has three slides with
embedded FlashPaper 2 animation (SWF) objects. The problem is that
even though when I preview the entire project these FlashPaper
objects appear to be fine, upon publishing as a Windows EXE or as
an SWF file, only one of the three slides is normal. The other two
show no text, but merely flash green boxes. I don't understand why
these would show up fine in preview but would fail to publish. I
even deleted the good FlashPaper slide and one of the bad ones --
interesting that the remaining FlashPaper slide published just
fine(!). This leads me to believe that Captivate 2 can only handle
one FlashPaper SWF animation per project. Is this true? If so, is
this issue addressed in Captivate 3? And if Captivate can handle
more than one FlashPaper SWF object, how can I get around the issue
    I describe above?

    Hi Charinos
Have you tried publishing using different target versions of
the Flash Player? Try publishing as Flash 8 and see if that makes a
difference. This should keep the associated FlashPaper .SWF files
as separate objects and call them as needed. So give that a try and
see if it makes a difference.
If that fails to work, I suppose you could try simply linking
to the FlashPaper objects as needed from either Button or Click Box
    objects inside your Captivate.
    Just a thought... Rick

    Hi there,
I got this problem when I installed Adob master collection Over CS 5.
I had children book story storis which created in Adobe illustrator CS 5 and I created art boards in Adobe photoshop cs 5.
After installting CS 6 i tried to edit the smart objects and it was not opeinging the smart object file in Illustrator.
    I did some tests.
    1) Right click on smart object layer and click export contents. Save on desktopp or anywhere you want. (I saved on desktop)
    2) I had this file on my desktop (Vector Smart Object10.ai) but it didn't show any icon, which program should open this type of file.
    3) Double click on the file and it pop up a extension window 'Click on change and select adobe illustrator' and press OK.
    4) Go back to your photoshop file and right click on smart object layer and click dit content. now this time it opens up assets in illustrator.
    ENJOY!
    Thanks

  • Smart Objects rendered incorrectly in CS6

Here is a logo, pasted as a smart object from Illustrator into Photoshop CS5.1 :
Here is the same logo pasted as a smart object from Illustrator to Photoshop CS6:
Note the gaps in the orange gradient at the top of the graphic, and the transparent areas in the border of the shield. This discrepancy appears (to me) to be a result of using a "sharper" antialiasing mode in CS6 which is leaving 1 pixel wide gaps between objects that are actually completely aligned to the same points in Illustrator. Scaling the object will result in the gaps showing up in different areas of the graphic. This is incorrect behavior on the part of Photoshop CS6. Will there be a fix forthcoming? I'll have to keep working in Photoshop CS5.1 for the time being until issues like this are resolved.

I think the discussion got sidetracked here on talking about anti-aliasing of "raster" smart objects. THIS IS NOT WHAT THIS COMPLAINT IS ABOUT.
The original complaint, which still stands, is that vector artwork is now rendering with 1 pixel wide gaps between elements that are, in Illustrator, exactly aligned. If you go back and look at my original two examples, the logo in the second screen shot has gaps in the orange banner in the logo, and is missing elements in the border around the shield. These are gaps or holes in the logo caused by a change in the way vector objects are rendered in Photoshop CS6. This can NOT be corrected by changing the antialiasing style - there is no choice of rendering method used. You get the new one, that is broken.
In this particular example, I opened up an old CS5.5 Photoshop file in CS6, and edited it. During that process I resized the logo a little bit, and didn't notice the gaps and lines that now appeared in the logo. I ended up sending out artwork that was affected by this bug. Luckily I did finally notice and in the nick of time was able to fix it by using the .PNG export work-around.
I was going to post a very simple example where I had a grid of filled boxes in Illustrator that were exactly adjacent to each other, which should result in a single larger solid box in Photoshop, but instead results in 1 pixel wide gaps between the elements. You can do this experiment for yourself. The reason I have not posted such an example is that, to my dismay, this example also now exhibits the same thin gaps in Adobe Illustrator CS6. So the rendering of vector images is broken there, as well.
Dragging and dropping elements out of InDesign into Photoshop is also a workflow that I have developed when creating web pages from previously produced print designs. This bug also affects this workflow. Every seperate vector shape in a logo or other compound artwork is now being rendered in such a way that small gaps might appear between elements that should be touching. I imagine that they are being pixel aligned or otherwise sharply antiased so that two shapes that are touching in the vector artwork are now being drawn not-touching. In the original example, if I resize the logo to a different size, the places the gaps happen change - some places that are gapped now touch, others that didn't have gaps now do.
THIS IS A BUG which will affect legacy artwork, and will affect workflows. This has degraded the usability of the Creative Suite as a whole, and should be corrected as soon as possible.

  • Program error when attempting to edit a vector smart object. Help?

I'm running Photoshop CS6 (13.0.1) 64bit on a MacBook Pro running OS X Lion. About 60% of the time when I try to double click a vector smart object instead of opening it up in Illustrator I get an error that says, "Could not edit original smart object because of program error." This most recent time it was a smart object from vector data I copied and pasted from Illustrator into Photoshop.
Any idea why this is happening and how I can fix it?
    Thanks.

  • Liquify as a smart object filter CS6

I understand that I should be able to use Liquify as a smart object filter in CS6 however when I get a layer rendered as a smart object and attempt to use the smart filter Liquify is greyed out.
my only opiton thus far has been to stamp it down and work on the stamped down layer.  Am I missing something .  I'm using Adobe Photoshop Version: 13.0.6 (13.0.6 20131025.r.54 2013/10/25:21:00:00) x64

I think that is in the photoshop cs6 creative cloud verion 13.1 that the Smart object liquify was added.
(not in the perpetual license versions of photoshop cs6)
Also, it's in photoshop cc (photoshop version 14) as well

  • Illustrator Smart Objects color inconsistencies

When I paste illustrator artwork into photoshop as a smart object, the colors are not reading as the same. Same sRGB profiles for both files. No tints used anywhere, 100% values used in illustrator.
Sometimes the shift is very slight. For example, C85D49 tagged in illustrator reads as c75d48 in photoshop.
Any thoughts as to why this would be?

Here'a link to the original file. http://adobe.ly/1d6uwA1
This was created with PS CS6. I recently had to do some modifications to it, and that's when I noticed the strange behavior with SO. Of course when I tried to duplicate the weirdness this morning, I was unable to do so. I know for certain though, that on two different occasions I updated one SO layer and the it replaced the contents of a different SO layer.
I did notice some other oddities while playing with this today. Here's what I did.
Open the file, and save with a new name to make a copy.
Edit a couple SO layers with Illustrator
    Close the file and save
Open the file back in PS and again edit a SO
This time when I save the SO I get this message "This file has been modified outside of Illustrator. Do you want to continue". I say yes to save it. I only get this message after I have closed the file and reopened it for more edits.
Another oddity; if I leave a SO open in Illustrator by just saving without closing the file. Then close the Photoshop file linked to that SO. When I open a new Photoshop file and try to open a SO within it, PS thinks the SO that was left open is the one I want to work on. I have to close out the previous SO to get the new one to open correctly.
I work with a lot of Illustrator SO's in PS. So I will continue to monitor what happens, and try to pay very close attention to what steps I took if and when the weirdly linked SO layers happens again.

  • Get raw original out of my smart object?

How do you separate a smart object from the camera raw parent?  I dont really need all those megabytes for this file.
I dont want to rasterize tho cuz I want my mask and re-edits available.
I can do a circuitous thing of copy the layer, rasterize,  make new smart object, copy mask over, and delete primary layer with raw image,
    but isn't there a one-clik fix?

The raw file is embedded inside of the Photoshop file containing the Smart Object. It is not referenced on the outside (you REALLY don't want that considering how difficult the management of external links would be).
Look, the whole purpose of an embedded Smart Object raw file is to maintain the most flexible processing and image control right up to the point you want to flatten the file for use. If you don't want to flatten and thus render the Smart Object, I suspect you really don't want to be using Smart Objects in the first place.
Yes, embedding the raw file makes the resulting file bigger (too big in my opinion) but that's the price you pay for the flexibility down the road.
You may actually be better off learning how to use the Snapshot function inside of Camera Raw 5.2 and above if you want the ability to play with different raw settings and store them in the raw file's settings. You can render a couple of different snapshots into a regular layered file in Photoshop and blend them there. No, not the same flexibility as a SO but a lot smaller files if that matters so much to you.

  • Problem when extracting Smart Objects

I am having a problem when extracting Smart Objects.
I work for a small pre-press company. We are working on several computers using one Job Server. Some of these computers have different versions of OS.
For one of our clients the company uses Smart Objects as a precaution for moire issues. The child file stays a certain size, while the parent file is sized down for print. Our client has started to request the larger Child size image for their use. For the volume of images requested, I have made an action out of Photoshop to open the smart object and save out a flat tif of the larger child file image. Here is the problem...
At times the smart objects child file does not retain the name of the smart object layer as its being extracted. What could be causing the lost connection between the parent file name to the child file name, and is there a way to prevent it in the future?
    Thanks for your help:)
    DVan

    Hello,
I have noticed that. The true problem is that the child files name starts out as the parent layer name, but then somewhere down the line it turns wonkie, starting to be named things like 12.psd etc. Please see attached. Your can't re-save the name of the child file either because all that does is save out a named temp file that does not get linked back to the parent file....so what is making the name change?

  • Cropping smart object files in PS with ACR

I sent a DNG from LR to PS with the "open as smart object in Photoshop" command and after I cropped it in ACR ... the result is in the following image:
It is not cropping canvas ...
So does this mean that we can not use ACR in PS for cropping smart object files?
    Any idea?
    Thanks ...

I see a display like you show.
For when the it was first opened as a smart object layer it was not cropped. ACR set the new Document canvas size to the image's pixel size  for there was no open document and the transform associated the smart object anchor point is the canvas center and the width an height sizes are both 100%.
If I then double click on the smart icon in the layers palette. ACR open the full RAW image.  If I then use ACR crop tool and say crop a portion or the upper left section of the image. When I click OK.  Photoshop updates the smart object layer object. The rendered pixels are the upper left section. The associated transform is not changed it still has the canvas centered anchor point and a width and height of 100%.  So the layers pixel are moved to the center and the width and height are  still 100%.  The number of pixels in the object is much smaller then canvas size so there are transparent areas on all four sides and the borders on opersid sizes are equal to each other.
If I double click on the smart Icon in the layer palette ACR open and all I see is the cropped area. When I click on ACR crop tool I see the whole image and the crop selection is the upper left section I selected the previous time I reprocessed the smart object layer
