Smart object in PS: what if you crop or do perspective correction afterwards

Let's say I open a LR smart object in PS, and do some stuff in PS in layers.
Then, I crop or rotatate or fix distortion in the RAW image in LR.  What happens to the PS layers, which no longer match the size or orientation of the smart object?

When a file is passed from Lightroom to Photoshop as a Smart Object, there is no live link. From then on, changes to either instance won't affect the other.
You can make it happen manually, though.
First you save the Lightroom changes from the Lightroom database back out to the original file, by selecting the image in Lightroom and pressing Command-S/Ctrl-S (the shortcut for the Save Metadata To File command, which is under the Metadata menu in the Library module and under the Settings menu in the Develop module). If the image is a DNG, the edit metadata is written into the DNG. If the image is raw, the edits are written into the XMP metadata sidecar.
Next, in Photoshop, you select the Smart Object in the Layers panel and choose Layer > Smart Objects > Replace Contents. Then select the original file and import it again. This is sort of like updating a link. To save time finding the original file, from Lightroom you can right-click the image and choose Reveal in Finder/Reveal in Explorer, then drag it into the Place dialog in Photoshop that comes up when you Replace Contents. Once you get through all that, the Photoshop instance is updated because it re-reads the updated edit metadata you saved out of Lightroom, and applies it.
If in Lightroom you cropped, rotated, or distorted the image, it may be necessary in Photoshop to choose Image > Reveal All to automatically expand to the new dimensions or Image > Trim to delete extra space that resulted from the update.
It's a very tedious and time-consuming series of steps, but it can be done if you need it.

  • Smart objects: nothing new - what a shame!

I am extremely disappointed to see that smart objects haven't progressed one whit since CS5.  Still filters that don't work with them, still only one mask, still no auto-align/auto-blend on smart objects, still no HDR on smart objects ... list goes on and on and nothing has been added. Very sad.

So you got a dead remote or a dead battery. Call AppleCare and it will be taken care of. What's the big deal? These things happen from time to time.

  • Could someone explain what a smart object is and what they are used for?

Keep seeing them mentioned, but no idea what they are or what the purpose is..

  • ICase Smart Cover For iPad What Do you Think?

    Just come across this iCase
http://www.icasecovers.com/ and wondering if any of you have used it?
    Cheers

Restart - hold the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut down. To power up - hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears.
Reset - Hold down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears - ignore the red slider.
Restore - Hold off on that one for now
You can try this as well - close open apps from the task bar. Double tap the home button and the task bar appears with all of your recent apps. Tap and hold down on one of the icons until they all wiggle. Then tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the icon to close the app. Close all of the apps in the task bar. Then restart your iPad as described above.

  • How do you replace a text smart object?

I learned how here how to replace a photo with a similar photo in the same designs using the miracle of smart objects.
    But what about text?
Let's say you have a chuck of text in a design and you want to change out that text with new text.
    Same principle?
Only thing, unlike a photo -- text are not files to choose to replace with.

SORRY, bit lost with both those answers.
    Here is where I am:
With photos in layers, I convert to a smart object. Then I right click and do the replace, a new box comes up and I select a jpeg off the desktop.
    Again,
with text, is there a corresponding function here or not?  You cannot choose a word file, right as your text replacement.
Maybe I should just then add text the old fashioned way by dragging out a new text box for each new file in this series.
I just thought it would be nice to replicate the smart object ease that I'm doing with images with text.
Wade-- don't understand opening up a smart object with text -- I get digaloge box
P -- your warp thing is way to convoluted for me sorry.

  • Smart Objects...changing canvas size problem

When changing the canvas size of a smart object, the layer on the original document will distort visually since it doesn't update the size of the smart object.
Is there a solution to this, or an easy way to quickly update every instance of the smart object on the original doc?
To clarify: I know that you can change the dimensions of the smart object on the original doc and it'll fix it, my question is if there's a way to automatically have that happen and have the original doc smart objects respect your canvas size changes on the smart object doc.
    Reproduce:
    1) Draw a circle
    2) Turn it into a smart object
    3) Go into the smart object, change the canvas size by increasing the height of the canvas. The smart object should now have a circle with blank space above/below it.
    4) Save the smart object
    5) The circle on the original document will now be squished.
    I'm using Photoshop CS5

When you change the canvas size of a document the only layer that will change is a backgroung layer for it does not support transparency so its pixels will be changed.  However a background layer should not distort it may be cropped  and have canvas added in which case the color of the empty canvas can be set in the canvas size dialog.  All other layer including Smart Object layer should not chang at all.  Layer positioning in relationship to the canvas  and the new canvas size is set during the canvas size change.  Layers can be any size and have any aspect ratio. Their sizes can be smaller, the same or larger then the canvas size. Even layer that can fit  within a documents canvas size may be positioned so that all, some or none of the layer is over the documents canvas.
I do not know what you mean when you write the original document chages. A smart object layer has an embedded copy of an object. The original document is not touched. You can open the smart object layer embedded object in  Photoshop by double clicking on the smart object icon in the layers palette smart object layer and change it size. And distort it f you wish. When you use Photoshop save. Photoshop will change the enbedded object in the smart object layer. You can also leave the embedded smaro object as is and change the smart object layer size and distort it using transform on the smart object layer itsself.
I think what you did was to open the smart object in photoshop change its canvas saze then save it. The updated smart object is realy round but you dont see that it is becaue it is being transformec ti fit the original documents canvas. If you do a Canvas size on the codument you will see the original docyment canvas size is not change and thet your now squaching a now changed taller object into a shorter canvas.  With each Smart Obkect layer there is as associated transform.
No I was wrong I just tried that and it looks like the transform was not the problem as yo can see I dir a Ctrl+T so you can see the size of the smart object layer is now biger then the original document and is positioned centered canvas is still 300x300 white area in image

  • How to distribute photos on a page when they are all smart objects

    Hi there,
    I have 5 images on a page in 3 columns, 2 each of 2 and 1 of 1
They are all Smart Objects that have been resized and cropped to fit the openings they now occupy.
I've been sizing, aligning and distributing these things by eye but watched the tutorial on how to use the alignment and distribution buttons so thought I'd try that.
Things seem to go ok when aligning edges ...for example if I select the two images in the center column and align their left or right edges that works OK. Similarly I can select the top or bottom edges of the large on in the column of its own on the right and align its top edge with those in the other two columns and ditto for the bottom edge.
When 'distributing' them however, things don't work, The distribution tool seems to be working off the underlying images rather than the visible images which have been resized ...and sometimes changed ...via the 'replace contents' command.
Is there a way to get PSCC 2014, latest build ...to distribute based on what is visible instead of what the underlying image is?
    Thanks,
    jj

Photo Collage Toolkit (Image File are placed in as smart object layers.)
Photoshop scripting is powerful and I believe this package demonstrates this A video showing a 5 image collage PSD template  being populates with images:
The package includes four simple rules to follow when making Photo Collage Template PSD files so they will be compatible with my Photoshop scripts.
Size the photo collage templates for the print size you want - width, height and print DPI resolution.
Photo collage templates must have a Photoshop background layer. The contents of this layer can be anything.
Photo collage templates must have alpha channels named "Image 1", "Image 2", ... "Image n".
Photo collage templates layers above the background layers must provide transparent areas to let the images that will be placed below them show through.
There are twelve scripts in this package they provide the following functions:
TestCollageTemplate.jsx - Used to test a Photo Collage Template while you are making it with Photoshop.
CollageTemplateBuilder.jsx - Can build Templates compatible with this toolkit's scripts.
LayerToAlphaChan.jsx - Used to convert a Prototype Image Layer stack into a template document.
InteractivePopulateCollage.jsx - Used to interactively populate Any Photo Collage template. Offers most user control inserting pictures and text.
ReplaceCollageImage.jsx - use to replace a populated collage image Smart Object layer with an other image correctly resized and positioned.
ChangeTextSize.jsx - This script can be used to change Image stamps text size when the size used by the populating did not work well.
PopulateCollageTemplate.jsx - Used to Automatically populate a Photo Collage template and leave the populated copy open in Photoshop.
BatchOneImageCollage.jsx - Used to Automatically Batch Populate Collage templates that only have one image inserted. The Collage or Image may be stamped with text.
BatchMultiImageCollage.jsx - Used to Automatically Batch Populate Any Photo Collage template with images in a source image folder. Easier to use than the interactive script. Saved collages can be tweaked.
BatchPicturePackage.jsx - Used to Automatically Batch Populate Any Photo Collage template with an image in a source image folder
PasteImageRoll.jsx - Paste Images into a document to be print on roll paper.
PCTpreferences.jsx - Edit This File to Customize Collage Populating scripts default setting and add your own Layer styles.
    Documentation and Examples
Any size image can be fitted to any image location however it works better when images and image locations have the same orientation. Landscape to Landscape Portrait to portrait.
Note the difference in the populated images here when Image and image location orientations don't match up.

  • How do I disable linked smart-object auto-update/refresh?

Working in the CC3D features, I am constantly making changes to my bump map. Every time I step-backwards, or make a significant change to the bump texture (smart object?), CC auto-saves the layer. This specific file is a very very large document (3 gigs in the bump texture layer alone), and the 3D layer has lots of lights and is very complex. This auto-refresh/update really bogs down the time that it would take me to make my changes. I have a very fast machine (I know it's fast, I dont need to list my specs), and I have all shadows disabled.
    How do I disable linked smart-object auto-update/refresh?

If you do not like a feature like smart objects there is nothing forcing you to use it. Use some other features to do what you want. Please don't ask Adobe to introduce bug into smart object support.
You could work on your bump maps textures in external files. When your done some time in the future you could edit your project with the smart object layer and use replace smart object. Only then will all smart filters be applied to the smart layer with the replaced smart object.
Or if by CC Auto save Layer you referring to CC Generate feature you can disable that feature.
I have no idea what your referring to when you write "CC auto-saves the layer" being a feature. I know CC Generate will write layers out as web files but that more a Web feature then a 3d feature.  Where do you see your layer being saved?

  • Switching off layer in smart object causes it to move in photoshop

Dear all. I am stumped. I have piece of packaging artwork that I’m using in my 3D software.
Smart Objects are great for this as all I have to do is go to Photoshop, double-click the Smart Object, then in Illustrator turn off the layers I need etc and update the Smart Object back in Photoshop and save back out for my 3D software. Only problem is that when I switch off the layer in illustrator and go back to Photoshop to update, the Smart Object jumps half way up my Photoshop file as if I’ve moved it but it also crops it so I can’t even just move it back down as there’s nothing there when I do.
The layer I’m switching off (not deleting) is the die cut for a pizza box, it is still in the Smart Object just not visible. I have tried this in both CS3 and CS4 and it happens both times. I have searched everywhere on the internet for similar problems but can’t find an answer which makes me think I’m doing something wrong. Although I’ve used Smart Objects many times before and this has not happened. I have attached some screen grabs to help with the explanation.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Icegiant.
My specs are CS3 (and CS4)
    MacPro 2 x 2.8 Quad Core Xeon,
    4 GB ram,
    512 mb graphics card,
    Mac OS 10.5.6

You need to set up an invisible Bounding Box in the Illustrator file. This will be outside the Die cut. This Cropping area can be defined as a Cipping Mask. In Illustrator Object/clipping mask/Make - Command 7. I haven't really experimented with the ins-and-outs of this, and it may also be possible possible with a simple transparent bounding box. But the clipping mask (different to Photoshop Clipping Masks, same term, completely different function),always seems to work in keeping the defined area from moving when you update the Smart Object
Its happening because the outside perimeter of the Smart Object is changing somehow when you delete the object. Photoshop always defines how its going to sample/render the Smart Object based on this perimeter.

  • Smart Object Question

I am not a regular to this group and I have to admit I am a little
behind with my Photoshop learning curve. I just started going thru some info on smart objects and I am really confused about where these smart objects get saved.
When you go to edit the SO, a dialogue box prompts to save to commit the changes but then the next paragraph of the dialogue says the file must be saved in the same location....is that referencing the saving of the ORIGINAL tif or psd?
Thanks for any enlightenment on this! CS3
    kristin

    Thanks, Marek!
So, if the original and "placed" image is moved from its location or deleted...then what happens to the SO status?
Also, in another scenario, what if the SO does not exist before a layer in a file is converted to a SO...is this SO saved anywhere else or is it just some sort of extension to the file in which it was originally just an ordinary layer?

  • Smart object updates...

Been working on catagalogs, it seems, my whole life. Now working on one that has an average of 120 object per page. Been using Data Merge in InDesign for most but came up with a way of making one image contain 7 images that could be updated as products change and catgalogs need to be reprinted.
    Using smart objects...
However before the catalog has left the room, the client has sent product changes, so what a good time to test the theory of smart objects working. They don't. That is to say, I made a new file, "PLACED" images within that file and saved it , then flowed the images with text. InDesign updates the images that were flowed flawlessley but the images with smart objects did not change. I had to re-"PLACE" the products that changed, they were not updated automatically within the file they were "PLACED" into.
So I have the "PLACED" image (one of 7) re-opened, sitting next to the file that wil be flowed into the InDesign page. When I change that product by changing yellow to orange then saving the file (which is a smart object and the name is not changed) that image in the file that the image was "PLACED" into does not change.
Is the only way to have those product changes occur - to double click on the smart object and change it that way?
Am I doing - or not doing something correctly? How then will the products get changed?
    Jim

I'm assuming that all your images (the new ones that you want to update) are the same pixel dimensions as the old ones, you didn't say
If you  control click on the Smart Object in your layers Panel, you can choose "Replace Contents", this allows you to navigate to the new file. An additional tip is that you can set up and ACTION that will perform this function, so pressing a simple F key will bring up the Open dialog, allowing you to replace the new files much more quickly.
This is not a particularly obvious at present, but I do hope they are working on a more robust "replace" and even external file linking for the future.

  • Transparency of the Smart Object created in Illustrator

Hi guys! Anybody smarter than me?
I created vector object in Illustrator with opacity masks:
I inserted saved .ai file {by draging from Br} into Ps as Smart Object.
But have a look at the imgs. below: You can see, that the masked area using Ai - Opacity mask is 100% demasked in Ai, but do you understand, what the same area does when .ai file is converted to the Smart Object in Ps? Do you have any ide what can cause such difference in rendering of the same object?
    Thank you in advance!

Make sure you are using the same color space in both programs and create your mask in the destination color space. It is a color management problem. This problem is because you are using different color spaces in Illustrator and Photoshop.
Most likely you created the mask in a CMYK color space (document) in Illustrator and your Photoshop document is using an RGB color space. In fact you will have the same problem in Illustrator if you convert your CMYK document to RGB by using File > Document Color mode or copy the artwork from a CMYK document and paste it in a RGB document. Have in mind that the problem is not limited only to converting between CMYK and RGB color spaces, you could have the same problem when converting between two different color spaces using the same color model like RGB, for example sRGB in Illustrator and Adobe RGB in Photoshop. For additional details regarding similar problems with color spaces check this thread:

  • Photoshop CS6 (mac) - Why is Liquify disabled for smart object?

I've sent over an image from LR5 into PS CS6 as a smart object.
I'm wanting to run the liquify filter, but it isn't open to me as an option. Can someone give me some ideas on what the problem is here?
I checked with Help on PS..and it says my copy is up to date and no new updates available.
I thought CS6 would work liquify on smart objects as a smart filter.
I'm a bit of a noob here, so I may have something set wrong, so, please be patient talk slowly when using big words with me.

Liquify Smart Object support was added in a update/dot release to CS6. I don't remember which one. Also we are currently investigating a possible bug where Liquify Smart Objects from older Photoshop psd files may not be recognized correctly in the latest version of Photoshop.
Can you find out for sure on which version?  Seems strange, that CS6, no matter where it came from, wouldn't be sync'ed as far as version. I understand features coming out for PHotoshop CC, that would go forward and not be in CS6, but it seems that CS6 should be CS6 and be sync'd for features and version numbers no matter where you got it from.
If you got CS6 from CC....and you quit CC....does that version of CS6 quit functioning or does it work still going forward if you stop paying the CC monthly rent?

  • Unpack a Smart Object.... How??

    Hiya,
OK, this is the scenario.  I had to create a smart object of a group of layers because no matter what I tried I could NOT get dragging the group from one document to another to paste in place perfectly in the other doc (canvas was the exact same size as the other so that was not the issue).  So when I created a Smart Object and the dragged it over it was almost perfect but the problem was there was no way to "unpack" the smart object to put it back to regular layers or better yet, grouped layers.
Is there a way to do this that I'm not aware of??   I hope so, I've 3 other artists over at the DAZ forums that are interesested in knowing as well.
    Thanks much for the assistance.
    Richard ;-)~

No, there is no direct way to "unpack" a smart object - because in
general the operation can't be done or would be lossy (involving
    several conversions).
The point would be to have some quicker way of returning layer structure, sure damaged, to the master document. And one not too easy to do -  a right click or control click on the Smart Object "transfer Smart object to layers". Thats all.
In my feature request I remember suggesting a dialog warning of  these losses. So lets say (IF all of these conversions have been done at all) it returns a LAYERED, resampled, mode converted, version of the Smart object into the master file.  It would obviously not be Impossible to 'unpack' vector Smart objects, again a dialog informing you of this, or saying "rasterizing object necessary".
These conversions happen ANYWAY for the file to be represented in the master document, so for output, results are not changed - all you are doing is 'fixing' it, at res, bit depth, and mode. But still layered.
RAMWolff44's example is a good one  - where this functionality would be useful because he has used Objects to deal with layer structure - hisSmart Objects are not necesarily resampled, mode converted, or profile converted.

  • Why doesnt the smart filter mask move with the smart object?

OMG Why doesnt the smart filter mask move with the smart object?  Yikes Way PITA

If you look at the other tread about transform Again and smart Object layers you will find I found there seems to be two flavors of Transform and some bazar behaviors when it come to smart object layers. http://forums.adobe.com/message/4611500#4611500
However for this problem here I think I can not show you how to do it.
First target the smart filters Mask.  In fact so you can see what is happening Alt+Click on it so Photoshop displays the mask rather then the the composit image.  Then  use Ctrl+T free transform then just for a test hold down the Ctrl and the Alt keys and drag in a cornor to constrain and srink the Mask thee release the keys and press enter to commit the transform.
Next target the smart object layer then use the short cut Ctrl+Shift+T (Transform Again) on a PC the smart object layer will be transformed to match the filter mask transform.
