Smart object thumbnails in CC ...

The thumbnails of smart objects are not updated instantly after editing the content of it. For updated thumbnail, you have to turn off the visibility of the layer of smart object.

Thanks. Here's a link to the video of me transforming in CS5:
http://www.notchill.com/tmp/CS5_SmartObject_Transform.mov
Please note: The smart object I imported was already scaled down from the original size, but the transform controls show it as 100%.
In contrast, here is a screen cap of me doing the exact same process in CS4:
http://www.notchill.com/tmp/CS4_SmartObject_Transform.mov
As you can see, once I get into transform mode, it shows that the smart object has been scaled from its original. This data is very valuable.
Hope this helps to clarify. Please note this applies to rotation as well.

  • Smart Object Thumbnail Not Launching Illustrator

    Hi guys,
I've noticed what seems like a bug on my PC when using CreativeCloud. When I double click on the Smart Object Thumbnail inside of Photoshop instead of it launching Illustrator (the place the smart object was created), Photoshop brings up a window titled 'Import PDF'. The process I do works perfectly on my Macbook but on my PC it seems to present this error.
My Process is: Open Illustrator > Creative Vector > Copy Vector > Paste Into Photoshop > Paste as Smart Object > Find Layer > Double Click Smart Object Thumbnail.... After this step it usually launches Illustrator but it currently opens the 'Import PDF' UI, which then opens the file inside Photoshop as a rasterised file.
Do any of you have a fix for it?
    Thanks,
    Warren

You are an absoloute legend! My system was associating ai files with Photoshop as default. So I just right clicked on the ai file and selected 'Always Open with this Program'.
That was such a weird issue, I've never seen before (New Windows User). So I thank you for giving me a push in the right direction.

  • How to open smart object in camera raw

    Hi,
As the subject line reads, I'm having trouble opening a smart object in camera raw.  Every tutorial I read or watch says, "double click on your smart object thumbnail to open the image in camera raw."  But every time I do, all it does is open a copy of the image as a .psb file.
    Before you ask,
-The images I work with are stock images, JPG's.
    -I've tried to find an option in Photoshop > Preferences that will let me open smart objects in camera raw all the time;
-I've tried opening these files directly in camera raw.  When I do, there's a little link below the image that reads something like,
    Adobe RGB (1998); 8 bit; 2008 by 3000 (6.0 MP); 240 ppi
I click on it, and there's a 'click box for "open in Photoshop as smart objects";  clicking this will allow me to open the image in Camera Raw upon double clicking on the thumbnail.  But it will only work that way for that one instance of that one image.
    Anyway to make this happen?
    Thanks,
    KP

What is the .extension after your filename on this file? Needs to be .jpg, .tif or .psd.  Then choose open, and change format to Camera raw.
If you are saving as .jpg, the smart object has been bitmapped, and is a no longer smart object.

  • Change colour of an illustrator smart object in Photoshop

Hello, very basic but somehow has me stumped, how do I change the colour of a smart object which is in vectorised form from illustrator dropped into photoshop.
The object is all grey I'd like to change it to all black. Thanks

In photoshop, double click on the vector smart object thumbnail
in the layers panel, which will open the object back in illustrator.
Make your color change in illustrator and then File>Save.
Go back to photshop and the object should be updated with your new color.

  • ACR4.2, Lightroom, CS3 and Smart Objects

OK - here's something that's really bugging me and I just don't seem to be able to come up with an easy answer or solution although it might be staring me in the face. Hoping someone else can help here.
Situation 1: I open an image in LR, do a few minor edits to WB etc and then click Ctrl+E (PC of course) to Export the image to CS3. My Export options are set as TIFF/ProPhoto/16 bits/no compression. The image now opens up in CS3 as expected. I then convert this image to a Smart Object which is so indicated in the Layers Panel. I then choose New Smart Object via Copy and now have the original Smart Object and it's copy in the Layers Panel. Here comes the puzzling part - if I now double-click on the Smart Object thumbnail I am presented with a pop-up window that states "after editing the contents, choose File > Save to commit the changes".
Situation 2: If outside of LR I right-click on a RAW file and choose edit in CS3 it opens up ACR4.2 with the same edit sliders as in Lightroom. I now apply exactly the same minor edits as I did in Lightroom and upon completion I press and hold the shift key which changes the Open Image button to Open Object and sure enough the image now opens up in CS3 as a Smart Object. Up to this point both routes lead me seeing the same window. I now repeat what I did previously i.e. New Smart Object via Copy.
The big difference now however, is that when I double-click on the Smart Object thumbnail it now opens up in Camera Raw as I want it to. There is no pop-up window as was the case when I followed the LR route into CS3.
I am at a loss to understand why it should be different. There obviously doesn't appear to be a fault/bug with CS3 because things happen exactly as I expect them to. It's only when first going into CS3 via LR first does this strange pop-up window appear and I am not able to double-click on the Smart Object thumnail so opening it up in Camera Raw. Is it a bug, is it my Export settings or is it just me - frustrated?

I know it doesn't make sense, but that's the way it is. Here's what I do in the same situation.
First, I'm converting my raws to DNG files. I chose to do this so I don't have to worry about when to write out the sidecar files.
I take an image in LR, edit it he way I want.
I then go to Grid view, select the image, right click and select Show in Finder (or in your case, Explorer).
I then right click on the file icon in Finder/Explorer and Open in Photoshop. This opens the image in the Camera Raw dialog with all my edits in place. I then open the file as a smart object.
When I click on the smart object in PS to re-edit it, I go of course to the camera raw dialog. I then edit what I want.
When I'm done with the file in PS, I save it out as a JPEG/TIFF/PSD, whatever is appropriate for that type of file.
    I close PS
I then go to LR, in the Grid View, go to the folder holding the new JPEG/TIF/PSD image (in my case, the same folder as the raw file is in.
I right click on the folder and chose Sync.
Now I have two filed. My original DNG with the latest changes, no matter if they were done in LR or Camera Raw, and my JPEG/TIFF/PSD file.
I do it this way because I like to use LR for printing.
You can do all this without converting to DNG, but you have to remember to write out the metadata to the side car files when you leave LR.
    Hope this helps

  • Documents with Smart Objects - Very slow to open and Save - CS6 Photoshop

When opening and saving documents with smart objects photoshop freezes the adobe PS loader (circle dots) is replaced and the system loader (multi colored wheel of death) spins for 30 seconds or more.
What I've tried so far based off looking at various posts.
    Photoshop Preferenes
    Save in Background off
Maximise PSD and PSB file compatability never
    Cache Tile Size: 128k
Advanced Graphic Processor Settings: Basic & Normal
    Layer Panel options: No Thumbnail
    Observations and workthroughs to date
The file size and amount of smart objects effects the file expotentially i.e. The more smart objects you have the worse it gets
These files worked perfectly in PS CS5
It also happens on files natively created in PS CS6
The CPU is maxing out at 100% while PS loads
Closing or opening suitcase has no effect.
    System:
    iMac 27-inch, Mid 2011
Processor  3.4 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory  16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics  AMD Radeon HD 6970M 1024 MB
    Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63)
    Suitcase 4
Anyone got any ideas? This is making me go nuts!

    A solution!
It turns out the problem in my case was in fact Suitcase. Previously, I'd tried turning it off, but that didn't fix the problem, so this time, I uninstalled it completely and the problem disappeared. I then began re-adding it (installed 15.0.1, upgraded it, etc.) and the problem resurfaced with the addition of the Photoshop-specific plugin. Deleting that plugin solved the problem. So it seems that "disabling" Suitcase by stopping the TypeCore doesn't seem to actually disable all of the tentacles it sticks into your system.
    You can find the plugin here: Applications / Adobe Photoshop CS6 / Plug-ins / Automate / ExtensisFontManagementPSCS6.plugin
(After a restart, I also had to delete the font cache, as described here http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/troubleshoot-fonts-photoshop-cs5.html but your mileage may vary.)
Alternately, if you don't want to delete the plugin, disabling it from within Photoshop seems to work as well. To do that, go to File > Automate > Extensis, click Preferences..., then deselect Enable Suitcase Fusion 4 Auto-Activation.
Fortunately, the plugin doesn't seem necessary at all to use the the core functionality of Suitcase (enabling and disabling fonts) in Photoshop. I didn't even know what these app-specific plugins did until researching this problem, and I still don't quite understand the point of them. I guess they allow you to let the apps for which they're installed do a little bit more of their own management (enable a font via Suitcase that isn't enabled system-wide), but that seems like more control than I need--if I'm enabling a font, I want all my software to be able to use it.
Anyway, the problem seems to be completely solved on my system now, though I just did all this, so more testing over the next few days is required. I'll post here if any issues crop up. I'm interested in hearing if this solves it for anyone else as well.

  • Smart Object opening as .jpg instead of .psb

I received a file from another person – I didn't create it. It contains a Smart Object, which is indicated in the layer thumbnail. When I double-click to edit the smart object, a .jpg file opens, not a .psb. I know I can flatten it after making the changes and re-save it so the Smart Object updates in the PSD, but what I want to know is, why does this happen in the first place? Shouldn't a Smart Object always open a .psb?

If you placed a JPG file, then the smart object is a JPG file.
PSB is only used when Photoshop creates the smart object from layers, because PSB can contain everything in a Photoshop document.

  • Opening a smart object (photoshop cc layer) in camera RAW?

Opening a smart object (photoshop cc layer) in camera RAW? I have opened a processed RAW file from lightroom into photoshop cc, then done various processing and created a merged layer. I've then convered this layer to smart object (it displays the smart object layer icon). When I double-click this layer thumbnail it opens up in a seperate photoshop tab and I want to go back to RAW. I've tried this on various files and I can't seem to reopen smart objects back in RAW. I have file handling preferences set to "prefer adobe camera raw for supported raw files" and have done a fair amount of 'googling' but not getting anywhere. Thanks for any help

Try the Filter menu item then select Camera Raw Filter. it should then open in ACR for further editing. No it is not the RAW image but the smart object you have.

  • Place smart object into pre-existing Photoshop file

There's not a way to do this in Bridge, but maybe there is a way to script it?
I've never used a Bridge Script but would love to how to implement them, if I can get a script to do this...
I need to Import multiple files into an existing photoshop file (with a predetermined size ) as smart object layers in photoshop.
The options that Bridge currently offers falls short in 2 area
Load Files into Photoshop Layers-- does not import smart objects and creates a new photoshop file that ends up being as large as the largest imported file
Place into Photoshop--only lets you do one at a time
I need "Place into Photoshop" with multiple files
Is there a way to do this?
    Thanks!!

Please try this version, I've tested this in CS4...

  • How to avoid transparent background converting to white in smart object(psb )when image trace High Fidelity as we have the option of ignore white upto 16 colors trace.

i have a psd image file in photoshop cc 2014 that has transparent background layer. I wanted it to convert to vector. The best option i saw was to first convert it to smart object in photoshop via Layer->Smart Objects-> Convert to smart Object. then exported it to a psb. Then i opened the file in illustrator and applied the image trace tool but the transparent background got converted to white but i had the option of ignore white upto 16 colors trace. But in case of High Fidelity Conversion, the ignore white option is not available, what should I do now?

after using  high fidelity image trace  i hit expand, then i went to layers and hit the drop arrow by my thumbnail, which then shows <Group>,hit that drop arrow and it will show a list of all your paths, the very bottom one was my white background, you can click the eye or delete that path and it disappeared for me. i was using a png file with a transparent background, and nothing else worked for me, it always converted with white background, i never saw this mentioned anywhere, and accidentally discovered it, hope it works!!!

  • RE: Camera Raw and Smart Objects

    Hello Everyone.
    I have a question please.
Inside the Camera Raw 8.1, Inside the Workflow Options, I Checked the Box for Open In Photoshop as a Smart Objects.
I noticed Inside the Camera Raw, Open Image box turn to, Open Object box.  I click on open, and It opened the Image as a Smart Objects Inside the Photoshop.
If I make any changes to the Image, and If I Double Click on the Smart Object, It will Open In Camera Raw again which Is good.
I also noticed If I do any changes to the Image Inside the Camera Raw to the Smart Object after clicking on Open Smart Objects I see the changes Inside the Photoshop also.
But If I do any changes to the Image Inside the Photoshop, and later I Double Click on the Image the Image opens Inside the Camera Raw, without any changes.
This Is my question: The Smart Object Image Is still a Raw Image ?
    This Is my next question:
I know If I open a Raw Image Inside the Camera Raw, and If I click on Done, the image is still a Raw Image, which Is good, and If I click on Reset Bottom, It will reset It back. If I only change the White Balance  and Click on  Done and go back to the Camera Raw again, and I choose As Shot, the Image goes back the  Original Raw file.
But If I do other changes such as the exposure, any color change, and click on done I can never go back to the original..
In the past month I been working with the Lightroom, and I noticed if I open a Raw image Inside the Lightroom, and do any changes to that Image,,  any time I can click on the Reset and the Raw image goes back to its original.
I don't think we can do this with Camera Raw can we ?

Clear removes the Camera raw settings completely. You will not see the adjustment icon on the thumbnail in Bridge
Camera Raw Defaults will show the icon and double clicking the thumbnail will always open it in Camera Raw with the Default settings.  The Default is "As Shot", which is why you don't see any difference. It's when you choose a Custom Default that you will. It will stay with the Camera Raw file.
See this article by Julienne Kost.
    http://blogs.adobe.com/jkost/2009/10/setting_new_camera_raw_default.html
Another difference is with Jpegs. Open a Jpeg in ACR, make an adjustment, click "Done".  Select "Camera Raw Defaults" and it will always open in ACR instead of Photoshop.  Select "Clear" and it's a normal jpeg that will once again open in Photoshop.
Basically that's about all I know, I normally don't use ACR much.

  • Add multiple smart object images to PS CC? (Win7)

I'd like to be able to load quickly several layers of the same image (all as smart objects) to blend exposures. A recent J. Kost blog entry demonstrates opening such layers directly from Lightroom but she discovers from reader feedback that Adobe never programmed a Windows version of this process that would allow me to open seeveral images in one Photoshop CC document as separate smart object layers.
I have tried to figure out the exact steps to make this happen with Bridge, too. It worked once, but there seemed to be delay in display of the smart object corner icon in the layer thumbnail. That's weird. "Place Image" -- from Photoshop -- seems to work the best.
This is so common to my needs that I am looking for a fast and simple way to build the layers. Has anyone found a work around to do this -- on Windows -- in LR5.3 DIRECTLY to Photoshop CC (updated to 14.2)? I'd do it from Bridge if necessary but spemd all my time in Lightroom for asset management as well as usual post processing.
When I search for this action/technique all I get are demos of opening *linked* smart object layers.
    Thanks, in advance,
    jonathan7007
    Win7 64bit
    Ivy Bridge i7, 32Gig RAM
    LR 5.3
    Photoshop CC

To my knowledge Illustrator does not support smart objects. However it does support image linking. Which means if you update a image in photoshop, Illustrator will know the file has changed.
When placing the file, you will see a checkbox at the bottom of the open dialog box for link, make sure it is checked. When you update the file when Illustrator is running with that file opened, you will get a promt telling you the file has changed and asked you if you want to update the image.
If you choose not to update the image at that time, you can click on the linked file text in the top tool bar and update the image from there.
If the file is not open or Illustrator is not running then the file will update the next time you open the file.
Also you will find a edit original button in the top tool bar to take you back to what ever image editor is assigned to that file format.
To assign a file format to photoshop:
For this example we will use jpeg extention
    1) Open windows explorer
    2) Menu options tools>folder options>File types tab>scroll to jpeg and click on it
    3) Click the advanced tab
    4) see what actions are listed odds are only open and printo are listed
    5) If Edit is not listed, click on the new button
    6) For the action type EDIT
    7) For the application used to perform action click the browse button
    8) Browse for photoshop.exe
    9) The following should now be in the application used to perform action box:
    "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS3\Photoshop.exe" %1
The above file location is assuming you have CS3 and you used the default installation edit original button in Illustrator and the right mouse button menu in windows explorer will take you to photoshop to edit the file.
    10) After you click OK you will see the new EDIT action in the list
    11) Click OK  and then click close to get out of all the dialog boxes
The action can be removed at any time or edited to use another application.

  • Missing frames in smart object converted video layer?

I noticed that whenever i try to convert a video layer I drew on in photoshop to a smart object, when i play it back there are empty frames! And no matter what I do I cannot get it to show the frames. Now I know the frames werent empty when i first drew on the video layers, and when i import a video into photoshop and convert it to a smart object all the frames are there. So I guess it's just an error with video layers with drawings on them done in photoshop? I tried googling every possible wording of this scenario but I found NOTHING, so can someone please help me?

after using  high fidelity image trace  i hit expand, then i went to layers and hit the drop arrow by my thumbnail, which then shows <Group>,hit that drop arrow and it will show a list of all your paths, the very bottom one was my white background, you can click the eye or delete that path and it disappeared for me. i was using a png file with a transparent background, and nothing else worked for me, it always converted with white background, i never saw this mentioned anywhere, and accidentally discovered it, hope it works!!!

  • Problem editing smart objects in CC

Not sure what I'm doing differently. But I use to copy over a layer into a file. as a smart object, transform it. Then if I needed to replace the image. I would double click and the contents would open as a .psb file. I could then replace the image and save it and it was updated in the main comp file.
Now, if I double click I just get Camera Raw?
If I choice edit SO same thing.
Replace content lets me choose another file, but I don't have the open .psb which I could work on before saving it back.
What am I doing wrong now to not get the .psb to open and edit?
    Thanks
    Maxi

Sound like what was mentioned above: you dragged a RAW file or one that was at somepoint edited in ACR into your document.  If you open a jpg or other file type in ACR, it will continue to open in ACR, so this might be your problem if it's not a RAW file.  You can check to see if it was edited in ACR in Bridge.  There will be some icons below the thumbnail showing that it's been cropped and adjusted in ACR.  If the files you're trying to drag in aren't RAW or have been edited in ACR, this sounds like a bug.
