Smart object updates...

Been working on catagalogs, it seems, my whole life. Now working on one that has an average of 120 object per page. Been using Data Merge in InDesign for most but came up with a way of making one image contain 7 images that could be updated as products change and catgalogs need to be reprinted.
Using smart objects...
However before the catalog has left the room, the client has sent product changes, so what a good time to test the theory of smart objects working. They don't. That is to say, I made a new file, "PLACED" images within that file and saved it , then flowed the images with text. InDesign updates the images that were flowed flawlessley but the images with smart objects did not change. I had to re-"PLACE" the products that changed, they were not updated automatically within the file they were "PLACED" into.
So I have the "PLACED" image (one of 7) re-opened, sitting next to the file that wil be flowed into the InDesign page. When I change that product by changing yellow to orange then saving the file (which is a smart object and the name is not changed) that image in the file that the image was "PLACED" into does not change.
Is the only way to have those product changes occur - to double click on the smart object and change it that way?
Am I doing - or not doing something correctly? How then will the products get changed?
Jim

I'm assuming that all your images (the new ones that you want to update) are the same pixel dimensions as the old ones, you didn't say
If you  control click on the Smart Object in your layers Panel, you can choose "Replace Contents", this allows you to navigate to the new file. An additional tip is that you can set up and ACTION that will perform this function, so pressing a simple F key will bring up the Open dialog, allowing you to replace the new files much more quickly.
This is not a particularly obvious at present, but I do hope they are working on a more robust "replace" and even external file linking for the future.

  • Smart Object Update Script?

    Hey guys,
Okey here is the thing, i have lets say 10 .psd's that contain smart objects. I want to ask you, is it there any script for Photshop CS6, that can open all .psd files and reresh all smart objects? (simillar to the Image Processor Script that exports .jpgs)

There is nothing to refresh imbedded Smart Object are copies independent stand on their own.  If you want to update the imbedded smart object you can. However you need to somehow create a process that will record what smart object layers in a document contain.  So when you update the original image you can reconcile you database query it for document that contains the copies in smart object layers. Then kick off a process to update the documents hit that will replace the contents of the involved smart object layers.

  • Edited vector Smart Objects update pixilated in Photoshop

Hello everyone, hope you can help.
I import CS3 Illustrator vector EPSs as smart objects into PSDs which works fine... until I need to edit the smart object. I follow the prompts on screen and double click on the smart object which opens an Illustrator file - edit - and save per prompts. When I return to PSD, smart object looks blurry and pixilated. Only solution I can find is to make the changes again to original Illustrator file and re-import as smart object. I know this isn't the way it's meant to work - probably doing something really silly. Have searched forums and can't find any similar problem which seems to confirm that it's me not the programme.
    Any help greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
Thanks for getting back. I should have probably mentioned I'm working in CS3.
Re Colour Mode: Both Illustrator EPS and PSD are CMYK.
Re Colour Profile: Not very technically savy about these things. I know that under 'colour settings' the default is for Creative Suite applications to be synchronised for colour management. I double checked and Illustrator and Photoshop are still in sync, and I'm not getting any warning messages when I open the PSD about colour profiles being mismatched or missing etc. After that I'm not really sure what to check next?
Re »Replace Contents«  Smart Object:  Replacing the contents sorts out the 'blurry' pixilated' issue but leaves me with another problem... because it replaces from the original file -  but edits, when done from PS, seem to made to another (imbedded?) file, leaving the original intact. So instead of double clicking on the SO icon in Photoshop to edit a Smart Object, I'll have to open the original vector EPS in Illustrator - edit - save - then replace contents in Photoshop.
Thanks for your help Christoph. I think this one will have to resigned to the 'buggy glitch' file.

  • Embedded Vector smart object fails to update after saving swatch library in Illustrator

I am using Photoshop CC 2014 and Illustrator CC 2014 on MacOS 10.9.5
I originally posted this in the Photoshop forum, but it was suggested that I try posting it here since Illustrator is likely to be the culprit.
    To cause this issue;
1 - Paste an Illustrator into Photoshop as a Vector Smart Object
2 - Edit content with that object selected
3 - in Illustrator, save a swatch library in AI format
4 - Make a change to the object so that you can save changes, then save
5 - Switch back to Photoshop and let the vector smart object update
You will see the following image:

Neil's the moderator and here you are wide-eyed (wha??). If you didn't know that how can you comment on the culture here. The culture I see is people coming here with their problems and then copping an attitude. Always the same. And "the usual suspects" always rise to the same bait. But plonk them all you want. Many here have tried and failed to clean up things. I have found the "attitude" here quite justified much of the time.
    - i have 20 years experience so adobe's an idiot
    - why can't the software work the way I want
    - i don't have problems in any other software so it must be adobe
    - those who question me on these forums are derisive idiots
    - etc etc
After a while you will also be familiar with this attitude. MO's right, hopefully soon Adobe will have a sandbox forum for (lame) folks to speak with a few quiet ones responding in their second (or third) written language the scripts they've been supplied. And half the time they'll lick em good. But you and I will still be here getting shat on for our moxy. For our overwhelming intelligence.

  • Smart Object opening as .jpg instead of .psb

I received a file from another person – I didn't create it. It contains a Smart Object, which is indicated in the layer thumbnail. When I double-click to edit the smart object, a .jpg file opens, not a .psb. I know I can flatten it after making the changes and re-save it so the Smart Object updates in the PSD, but what I want to know is, why does this happen in the first place? Shouldn't a Smart Object always open a .psb?

If you placed a JPG file, then the smart object is a JPG file.
PSB is only used when Photoshop creates the smart object from layers, because PSB can contain everything in a Photoshop document.

  • How do I disable linked smart-object auto-update/refresh?

Working in the CC3D features, I am constantly making changes to my bump map. Every time I step-backwards, or make a significant change to the bump texture (smart object?), CC auto-saves the layer. This specific file is a very very large document (3 gigs in the bump texture layer alone), and the 3D layer has lots of lights and is very complex. This auto-refresh/update really bogs down the time that it would take me to make my changes. I have a very fast machine (I know it's fast, I dont need to list my specs), and I have all shadows disabled.
    How do I disable linked smart-object auto-update/refresh?

If you do not like a feature like smart objects there is nothing forcing you to use it. Use some other features to do what you want. Please don't ask Adobe to introduce bug into smart object support.
You could work on your bump maps textures in external files. When your done some time in the future you could edit your project with the smart object layer and use replace smart object. Only then will all smart filters be applied to the smart layer with the replaced smart object.
Or if by CC Auto save Layer you referring to CC Generate feature you can disable that feature.
I have no idea what your referring to when you write "CC auto-saves the layer" being a feature. I know CC Generate will write layers out as web files but that more a Web feature then a 3d feature.  Where do you see your layer being saved?

  • Smart objects not updating.

hi, i'm currently stuck with and issue that's ruining my workflow and slowing me down.
the basic job is to photograph lamps and replace the background. (see hallmarklighting.com)
i usually do so by editing the original photo and cut it out with the pen tool, ending up with several layers of adjustments and whatnot. i take those layers and insert them into a smart object of a template file i made for the background, from there it's just a matter of saving the various output files (print/web/psd).
the issue is that just recently when i save the smart object, it doesn't update, the progress bar stops at about 75%. the program doesn't freeze nor does the computer. the layers are saved in the smart object, but it won't show up in the main file, preventing me from saving out the final image. it started last  week. i have discovered if i flatten the image of the smart object, it works as it should. I'd be fine with this solution if i wasn't constantly asked to rework files for advertising materials and whatnot.
if anyone has a suggestion as to what could be causing this or how to fix it please let me know.

  • Update smart object in another Photoshop file

Ok so I am a logo designer, and I have this photorealistic mockup for logos.
So i have a layout where the main logo is a little above center, and below are two mock ups. So I am trying to have it where I can just make a change in the illustrator file and photoshop can instantly make the change. The problem is that I am using two different mock ups and I have to edit both the mock ups (double click opening another window and pasting the smart object) to use them. The top layer is ok, because it will update itself.
I want a way to edit the illustrator logo and photoshop to make all the changes in all three displays itself. The problem is that the bottom displays open up other photoshop windows, with smart objects within them, but if I open up the top smart object, then it automatically opens illustrator.
So is there a way to just make one change in illustrator and photoshop to automatically update it all.

Instead of two different files, you may want to combine them into one file and use the layer comp panel to switch between the two views. Then you could alter one smart object and it would affect both views.

  • Psd files not updating edited smart objects (PS CC as of 6/3/14)

I created a master PSD file and added four different TIF files as 'linked' (not embedded) Smart Objects.  If I edit these linked files (they open when double-clicked, or 'Edit Contents') make changes and then save & close the edited master TIF files, the main PSD file does not reflect the edited changes. If I double click the Smart Object, it opens and shows my edits, but to save & close still does not update the master PSD file.   I do this all the time without issue, so I am perplexed.  Even if I right-click the smart object and select "Update All Modified Content" nothing changes.  Closing the file, restarting Photoshop- nothing updates the main PSD file with the changes to the edited TIF files... EXCEPT if I 'replace contents' with the same file: then it updates the PSD.
    Any ideas?

I was actually just working in Illlustrator. Selecting the vector object and then select PS and Paste. I'm then asked if I want this to be a smart object. I select yes and it adds the object as a smart object layer. If I double click the layer it opens it in Illustrator, I make a change, save it and close it. Then back to PS and the smart object doesn't update.
I haven't used Place Embedded or Place Linked. I don't understand what those functions do. It's just not how I'm use to working.
Actually I have a large PSD doc. Inside it is a group of objects that I have turned into a Smart object. Inside that (by double clicking) is an AI file that is also a smart object. When I open that up to make a change it won't update once I save and close.
I have tried a coulpe of test with placed Linked and Embedded objects and I can't get those to work either. So what ever the change was. So far not really liking it.

  • Smart objects and auto update

I have a stack of screenshots to maintain, where what changes most often is the release information: so, I've made a separate .psd with the header and used File > Place to add it as a smart object. What I'm not having any luck with, is changing that single .psd file and seeing the update ripple through to all the screenshots. Tell me what I'm missing!

Maybe this is of interest to you.

  • Updated Illustrator smart object in Photoshop views blurry

    Hi all,
This is probably an insultingly simple query but:
I've created a map in Illustrator, opened this as a smart object in Photoshop and dragged it in as layer in a PSD.
When needing to make changes to the map, I've double clicked the smart object icon on the layer list which has opened the Illustator EPS of the map in Illustrator. Made changes, saved and closed - all is going according to plan up until this point.
When I return to my PSD the smart object has updated alright but it looks all pixilated and blurry. The file hasn't been moved since I originally placed the smart object and nothing I do seems to give me a crisp updated smart object.
My only option, which is a pain, is to open the original illustrator EPS - make changes - save and start again in Photoshop.
There must be something I'm doing wrong.
    Any help appreciated!

Thanks for your help, but still no joy I'm afraid.
Here are the screenshots doing it the 'save as' way:

  • How do you update the location of linked smart objects?

The new linked smart object feature was a low-key feature but it's fundamentally changing our workflow for the better!
Quick question, is there a way to update the paths to linked smart objects or will Photoshop work it out? I can't see a links panel under WIndow or file so am not sure how you do it sorry.
I'm about to edit these files at home and want to make sure Photoshop can find the links - as well as find everything when I copy it all back to the server and work.
    Cheers
    ben

Yes, the linked smart object can be either raster or vector, but they will be placed as raster images, just as the embedded SO are.  SO can be embedded or linked to an outside file.  Edits to the original will not update in the original until you select "Update modified content from the menu" when you reopen the file that has the place SO in it.  otherwise it will update when you save the linked file.  Yes, there still is an advantage to having an embedded SO.  You may not want to maintain the links - send a file off and forget to include the linked files.  You may want to alter the SO, but not the original file.
Ah, thanks. But does this mean that raster and vector smart objects can EITHER be located within the Photoshop file (as they have been since their advent) OR linked to an external file?
    And if so,
    1. Can this linked file be either raster or vector?
    2. Do edits to it automatically update the Photoshop file?
    3. Is ther any longer any advantage to having the smart object data stored within the Photoshop file when it can be linked?

  • Smart Objects not Updating in PS CC

I'm designing elements in Illustrator CC and then copy and paste them into PS and select  Create Smart Object. I've also tried saving the AI element and then placeing in PS as well. Then if I double click the smart object to edit it, it will open up in illustrator and I make a change then save and close and when I re-activate PS the change does not apply.

  • Linked Smart Objects missing after last CC update?

I had an update come across CC for Photoshop & Dreamweaver yesterday. After applying the update I'm finding that linked smart objects are missing from my File>Place menu. Anyone else having this issue? I had them before & now they are gone. CC shows me as having no updates available. Just checked Photoshop & it's showing I'm back at 14.0.

Sounds like the updater failed and you are running 14.0.0 again.
