Smart Object very blurry

Hi,
Hope this finds you well.
I've create a PSD that is 120 x 100 px. It's got a gray background. There is a white image that I tried copying and pasting from Illustrator into it as a smart object. But when I do, it comes in very blurry.
Any suggestions?
I appreciate your time and look fwd to hearing back from you soon.
Thanks.

Could you post a screenshot taken at 100%-view?

  • Vector shape to smart object, is blurry when scaled

I've recently been upgraded to Photoshop CS5.5 and am having issues with smart objects.
    Quite often I would:
make a shape layer, say a circle
apply a layer style, say a stroke and drop-shadow
    Convert this to a smart-object
Resize this object to whatever I needed and it would scale perfectly, the layer styles and crisp edge would scale.
Now, when I use this same workflow, the whole object becomes blurry - like it's become one giant bitmap instead of retaining its original nature.
The blurred smart object loses it's vector nature and looks horrible, this is surely an error.

It depends on how you scale the smart object layer. If you just use Ctrl+T free transform Photoshop will matieilize the pixels for the layer then resize the materilazed pixel layer like normal raster layer not text not a shape layer. If on the otherhand you double click on the smart object icon in the layer in the layers palette Photoshop will open the smart object in photoshop. If it a RAW file it wil open in ACR. If is is a Photoshop Document like a PSD, Tif, Jpeg etc it will open in Photosgop. If it is some Photoshop object like a layer group a collection of layers an vector shape layer it will open in Phpotoshop.  You can then scale the smart object  with Photoshop tools like ACR or Image size set resample constrain scale layer style etc to scale the smart object when you use save the change Photoshop will update the smaer object layer in the document. You can do the save by clicking the Close icon and respond yes to save.  Scaling the smart object layr this way  will scale text and vectors the way you want them to be scaled.

  • Documents with Smart Objects - Very slow to open and Save - CS6 Photoshop

When opening and saving documents with smart objects photoshop freezes the adobe PS loader (circle dots) is replaced and the system loader (multi colored wheel of death) spins for 30 seconds or more.
What I've tried so far based off looking at various posts.

The file size and amount of smart objects effects the file expotentially i.e. The more smart objects you have the worse it gets
These files worked perfectly in PS CS5
It also happens on files natively created in PS CS6

Graphics  AMD Radeon HD 6970M 1024 MB
    Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63)
    Suitcase 4
Anyone got any ideas? This is making me go nuts!

    A solution!
It turns out the problem in my case was in fact Suitcase. Previously, I'd tried turning it off, but that didn't fix the problem, so this time, I uninstalled it completely and the problem disappeared. I then began re-adding it (installed 15.0.1, upgraded it, etc.) and the problem resurfaced with the addition of the Photoshop-specific plugin. Deleting that plugin solved the problem. So it seems that "disabling" Suitcase by stopping the TypeCore doesn't seem to actually disable all of the tentacles it sticks into your system.
    You can find the plugin here: Applications / Adobe Photoshop CS6 / Plug-ins / Automate / ExtensisFontManagementPSCS6.plugin
(After a restart, I also had to delete the font cache, as described here http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/troubleshoot-fonts-photoshop-cs5.html but your mileage may vary.)
Alternately, if you don't want to delete the plugin, disabling it from within Photoshop seems to work as well. To do that, go to File > Automate > Extensis, click Preferences..., then deselect Enable Suitcase Fusion 4 Auto-Activation.
Fortunately, the plugin doesn't seem necessary at all to use the the core functionality of Suitcase (enabling and disabling fonts) in Photoshop. I didn't even know what these app-specific plugins did until researching this problem, and I still don't quite understand the point of them. I guess they allow you to let the apps for which they're installed do a little bit more of their own management (enable a font via Suitcase that isn't enabled system-wide), but that seems like more control than I need--if I'm enabling a font, I want all my software to be able to use it.
Anyway, the problem seems to be completely solved on my system now, though I just did all this, so more testing over the next few days is required. I'll post here if any issues crop up. I'm interested in hearing if this solves it for anyone else as well.

  • Edited vector Smart Objects update pixilated in Photoshop

Hello everyone, hope you can help.
I import CS3 Illustrator vector EPSs as smart objects into PSDs which works fine... until I need to edit the smart object. I follow the prompts on screen and double click on the smart object which opens an Illustrator file - edit - and save per prompts. When I return to PSD, smart object looks blurry and pixilated. Only solution I can find is to make the changes again to original Illustrator file and re-import as smart object. I know this isn't the way it's meant to work - probably doing something really silly. Have searched forums and can't find any similar problem which seems to confirm that it's me not the programme.
    Any help greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
Thanks for getting back. I should have probably mentioned I'm working in CS3.
Re Colour Mode: Both Illustrator EPS and PSD are CMYK.
Re Colour Profile: Not very technically savy about these things. I know that under 'colour settings' the default is for Creative Suite applications to be synchronised for colour management. I double checked and Illustrator and Photoshop are still in sync, and I'm not getting any warning messages when I open the PSD about colour profiles being mismatched or missing etc. After that I'm not really sure what to check next?
Re »Replace Contents«  Smart Object:  Replacing the contents sorts out the 'blurry' pixilated' issue but leaves me with another problem... because it replaces from the original file -  but edits, when done from PS, seem to made to another (imbedded?) file, leaving the original intact. So instead of double clicking on the SO icon in Photoshop to edit a Smart Object, I'll have to open the original vector EPS in Illustrator - edit - save - then replace contents in Photoshop.
Thanks for your help Christoph. I think this one will have to resigned to the 'buggy glitch' file.

  • Smart objects rotating unexpectedly

    Hi All,
I don't use smart objects very much, so I hope someone will save me the time of learning too quickly...
I have a supplied .psd file which has several faults in method of construction by noobie, but the one throwing me is that two of the 3 or 4 smart objects placed in it are displaying rotated 90 degrees and are scaling to fit the apparent frame.
I believe they showed correctly when I opened the file for a look, but after making a levels adjustment in one of the s/o's, the two changed orientation and refuse to behave now.
I don't recall hearing of this before, is it common?
    PS11.0.1
    OSX 10.5.7
    Intel Duo

No, I don't know anything except that the file was prepared by a noobie who had no idea...
To describe better, it is a front cover all laid out in photoshop with some text on layers and 5 mugshots scattered around the edge of the page, all smart objects and normal portrait orientation.
I opened the file with no warnings except profile, viewed correctly, noted the ugly colour in mugshots, so double clicked on layer to open smart object, which went fine, made tonal adjustments and flattened s/o and closed.  When the parent file updated, that s/o came back rotated 90deg and distorted to fit in the original frame ie squashed!  Not only that, but another s/o had done the same even though I had not opened it!
Quite bizarre, but sometimes these amateurs come up with some strange ways to build a file so anything was possible in the construction.
Also, the text on their laser sample is a serif but it opened on my machine as arial with no warning.  Maybe it is just a busted file!
I don't get a lot of weird things happening, I have a low-spec but very stable system and up to date and I have had plenty of practice, but admittedly not much with smart objects so I am putting it down to a one-off file glitch or something I don't understand with the smarty...

  • Blurry smart objects in Photoshop Save for Web jpegs

I create graphs, etc in Illustrator, place them as Smart Objects in a master Photoshop file before outputing Save for Web jpegs to use as PowerPoint slide backgrounds. Everything created in Illustrator or Photoshop through that process (Quality 80 or 100 with any of the SfW options on or off) Save for Webs are blurry when imported (at 100%) into PowerPoint. The only way I have been able to get anything crisp in PowerPoint was saving a Photoshop pdf. However, that was only the text created in Photoshop. The Illustrator Smart Object part was still blurry. Anyone have any idea on the best process to combine Photoshop and Illustrator files into one file for import into PowerPoint as a clean, crisp background? At this point I am open to all suggestions.

There are parts that are being added in Photoshop, hence going from Illustrator through Photoshop as a Smart Object and then onto PowerPoint. If I wasn't 5 months down the line and just nearing deadline, I would recreate everything in Illustrator. Assuming that I have to continue at this point down the Illustrator through Photoshop line of working, how do you designate pngs or jpegs to be 220ppi. Jpegs have a 1-12 quality (and 12 is still blurry).
Note regarding PowerPoint, I embed the full-page image into the background so others that are using this can't move (by accident or on purpose) the background.

  • Smart objects come in blurry?

When pasting a vector logo or icon from illustrator into photoshop cs5 as a smart object into a web template, the object is blurry or pixelated. This is happening with multiple files. Is there a setting somewhere causing this? Any other ideas?
    Thanks

we've tried the same pasting from the same files on multiple computers so I don't think it's the .ai files.
I've attached examples at 100 and 200 percent - the lines should be smooth on the 100%

  • Smart Objects Vector Resizing is Blurry

    Hello all,
I was hoping someone could help me out with this. It's driving me nuts.
Basically, I've always used a combination of vector objects converted to smart objects to retain the ability to resize an object within my master comp...but also be able to make changes to the layer within the smart object if need be. Basically, the primary purpose of a smart object
However, lately, when I convert a VECTOR object to a smart object and increase it's size, the image becomes blurry. Any idea why this is happening? I've linked to a video clip i made to help demonstrate the issue below.
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3645/smartobject.mov

I appreciate the reply...but this has always worked in the past. Even with more complex layers.
If you think it worked in the past, its probably because you had an Illustrator Smart Object. Using Illustrator Smart Objects is the only way you can get genuine vector scaling to work, so that its completely lossless when you rescale.  Photoshop vectors only rescale based on the resolution of the child document.
In the case of your example, you can sort out the problem by opening the Smart Object, upscaling it, and saving. You will then have to go back to the master document and transform the object down again by the same proportion.

  • Updated Illustrator smart object in Photoshop views blurry

    Hi all,
This is probably an insultingly simple query but:
I've created a map in Illustrator, opened this as a smart object in Photoshop and dragged it in as layer in a PSD.
When needing to make changes to the map, I've double clicked the smart object icon on the layer list which has opened the Illustator EPS of the map in Illustrator. Made changes, saved and closed - all is going according to plan up until this point.
When I return to my PSD the smart object has updated alright but it looks all pixilated and blurry. The file hasn't been moved since I originally placed the smart object and nothing I do seems to give me a crisp updated smart object.
My only option, which is a pain, is to open the original illustrator EPS - make changes - save and start again in Photoshop.
There must be something I'm doing wrong.
    Any help appreciated!

Thanks for your help, but still no joy I'm afraid.
Here are the screenshots doing it the 'save as' way:

  • Hello, i'm creating a very simple animation in ps cs5, but when I try to transform a smart object in a frame, all the frames are affected by it. What can I do ? Thanks, Ep

Hello, i'm creating a very simple animation in ps cs5, but when I try to transform a smart object in a frame, all the frames are affected by it. What can I do ? Thanks, Ep

Ok, you are in frame animation mode. I thought cs5 had a timeline mode, but now I think I was wrong.
In frame animation mode what you do is in one frame you have the object rotated in one position, then select an other frame and rotate it. If it rotates the first frame, which I think it will. Create duplicate of the object in a new layer. Then rotate the second layer.
At this point in my example you would have two layers, one of which has a rotated object.
    Clear the frames
Convert the two layers to frames.
You now have two frames, one for each layer.
Select both frames then click the tween button.
This will create the in between frames.
In the tween dialog box the higher the number of frames set here, will create a smoother animation but will result in a longer time frame for the animation to play.
Because Photoshop has no way of knowing which way the object should rotate, it is feasible for it to rotate the opposite direction or could look wonky. Just undo and add an in between layer showing how it should look in the middle, then continue on.
So your layers should be the following, a frame that shows all objects in their rest state.
All objects that remain in a rest state must be copied to the next layer (ctrl-j on Windows or cmd-j on Mac)
All subsequent layers are then used for rotating a duplicate of the object. (Ctrl j or cmd j)
You will find the commands to clear the frames, convert layers to frames and tweeting in the hidden menu found when you click the small icon in the upper right hand corner of the animation panel.

  • Vector smart object from AI is blurry

I am storing design elements as Vector Objects in Illustrator so that I can update them quickly when needed. The issue is that they vector objects, when viewed inside of photoshp, are quite a bit more blurry than the photoshop equivalent. Any ideas why?
I understand that the Smart Object is rasterized. Do I need to do something to my photoshop document to view it in its final rendered state? Photoshop elements are rasterized as well, so i am not sure what is going on.
In the attached pic, the top element is from illustrator, while the bottom is the same thing made inside photoshop. thanks.

thanks for the reply. My document is 320x240 because that will be the final UI size.  I made sure both documents are 320x240.  The issue is that the native photoshop element is more fine RELATIVE to the illustrator file.  They are both 320x240, so they should both look the same, right?
In the photoshop file I also had a specific image size of something like 3.5 inches by X.X inches, so the actual pixel ratio is 70.5 i think.  I could not find out how to specify the image size (in inches) for the illustrator file, so that document is actually be 72 pixels.  Perhaps this is part of the issues. However, by this rational the illustrator file should be more fine, not less...

  • Photoshop CS6: Pros and Cons of Using Smart Objects

I haven't had Photoshop CS6 for that long, and have only just got past feeling uncomfortable with using Curves, now I've learnt how to use them properly.
My concern is - I am currently learning about Smart Objects. The concept, at first, seemed like 'the best thing since sliced bread', being able to non-destructively use filters, Shadows/Highlights command, Unsharp Mask, endlessly scale using Free-Transform etc etc, without harming pixels at all.
However, the more articles I read about their use in Photoshop, the more I am afraid to start using them in my workflow.
I understand that when you convert to a Smart Object, this process is non-destructive, i.e. I can perform as many readjustments to a filter, for example, and Photoshop will always work from the embedded container file (which has had no filter adjustment made to it) to adjust the filter to your most recently adjusted settings. If you later decide you don't want to use a filter at all, and rasterize the Smart Object back into a regular layer again, is this process non-destructive as well?
Then there is this article, which I struggle to understand properly:
    http://bjango.com/articles/smartobjects/
Please see the part 'Smart Objects Created in Photoshop'. It seems to say I can't scale with a Smart Object without causing interpolation and blurry edges. Please can somebody clarify what the writer of this article is trying to get across, because it is well documented that Smart Objects can be endlessly rescaled non-destructively.
Please understand I use Photoshop primarily for editing photographs.

There is much modern focus on "non-destructive" editing, but keep in mind if you don't overwrite or destroy the original file there is no destruction at the highest level.  Put in layman's terms, you could always start over with the raw file.
That thought segways into my next one:  Non-destructive editing makes sense if you need to use the same information for a variety of somewhat related purposes, or if the work product may need to change (e.g., to suit the whims of a fickle client).
But at another extreme, if you're editing for a particular purpose - say creating the best possible print from an exposure - sprinting right for the finish line by changing pixel values directly and being done with it can be an extremely effective approach.  This requires that you get things right the first time, and that takes practice.
Some folks do their Photoshop work by building up layer after layer and using smart objects, smart filters, etc., and this can be effective but no computer has yet been built that can composite all that stuff in real time with a big image.  So there IS a cost to doing it.  What you might gain by being able to re-do things, you might not have needed to gain if your control responses were instantaneous and you could tweak the intermediate result at every step very easily.  Note the number of posts about how slow Photoshop CS6 is/was at editing deep documents, some by people using 2012 computers.
As with most things, it's horses for courses.  It's good that Photoshop gives us rich tools and choices for how to work.
Regarding your specific question, bear in mind that what's communicated to the parent document from each of its embedded Smart Objects is a flat, rasterized image.  Think of the embedded smart object kind of like going off and opening another document, making the changes you want, saving the document, then flattening it and pasting the pixels into your parent document.
In the very first example in the linked article, they show how the smart-object-rasterized image of a vector circle, subsequently scaled by resampling the parent document in which the Smart Object is used, becomes fuzzy as it is scaled up.  Once you understand this you realize that of course you could scale up the smart object itself, e.g., to a size equal to or larger than what's ultimately needed by the parent document, and then it could be crisp in the parent document where it's used.
Of course, having all your smart objects at a size larger than you need takes up even more resources.

  • Vector smart objects

I am having to copy and paste a graphic from MS Word 08 and place it into Photoshop CS3. It imports as Vector Smart Object and is very blurry. I have done this with MS Word 04 to CS2 with no problems. I searched the forum but did not see any solutions. Any ideas. Thanks

  • Smart object in template: saving off each layer as a png.

I know someone must have asked for this before, however, I'm not sure how to phase it perfectly. I have provided many images to help me convey what I want, and I hope that helps. I make many mockups for smart phones and the like. Most of the time, when I present my work, my employer wants to see it "in the device".
I have a template of a phone (I grabbed an iphone just for the sake of mockups), and I load all my mockups into the smart object that makes up the phone's screen in the template. However, saving out each mockup can become very time consuming. Is there a script out there what will save out each screen once I have added all my content to the smart object? (In my example, the final result would be 3 pngs of the phone displaying one of the 3 screens)
    Thanks!

It there is no perspective distortion need like iPhone example a straight on perspective.  That would be a snap to do with a Photo Collage Template PSD and a batch script.  The template  could be as simpla as a background image of your iPhone shot straight on and an alpha channel the maps to the iPhone display. For example BatchOneImageCollage.jsx However that script would save a set of PSD files would contain a background layer. If you want a set of files the template would need two layers a plain white background layer a layer above it a cutout of your iPhone with the screen also cutout an missing., and the mapping alpha channel.  The saved PSD file would the need to be processed with the Image Processor Pro script the save PNG for the PSD and include an action that deletes the background layer or turns off its visibility.
Photo Collage Toolkit UPDATED Made Rotate for Best Fit an option in PasteImageRoll.jsx Edit to customize your default settings.
Photoshop scripting is powerful and I believe this package demonstrates this.
The package includes four simple rules to follow when making Photo Collage Template PSD files so they will be compatible with my Photoshop scripts.
    Documentation and Examples
There are twelve scripts in this package they provide the following functions:
TestCollageTemplate.jsx - Used to test a Photo Collage Template while you are making it with Photoshop.
CollageTemplateBuilder.jsx - Can build Templates compatible with this toolkit's scripts.
LayerToAlphaChan.jsx - Used to convert a Prototype Image Layer stack into a template document.
InteractivePopulateCollage.jsx - Used to interactively populate Any Photo Collage template. Offers most user control inserting pictures and text.
ReplaceCollageImage.jsx - use to replace a populated collage image Smart Object layer with an other image correctly resized and positioned.
ChangeTextSize.jsx - This script can be used to change Image stamps text size when the size used by the populating did not work well.
PopulateCollageTemplate.jsx - Used to Automatically populate a Photo Collage template and leave the populated copy open in Photoshop.
BatchOneImageCollage.jsx - Used to Automatically Batch Populate Collage templates that only have one image inserted. The Collage or Image may be stamped with text.
BatchMultiImageCollage.jsx - Used to Automatically Batch Populate Any Photo Collage template with images in a source image folder. Easier to use than the interactive script. Saved collages can be tweaked.
BatchPicturePackage.jsx - Used to Automatically Batch Populate Any Photo Collage template with an image in a source image folder
PasteImageRoll.jsx - Paste Images into a document to be print on roll paper.
PCTpreferences.jsx - Edit This File to Customize Collage Populating scripts default setting and add your own Layer styles.
Four Rules Templates need to follow:
Size the photo collage templates for the print size you want - width, height and print DPI resolution.
Photo collage templates must have a Photoshop background layer. The contents of this layer can be anything.
Photo collage templates must have alpha channels named "Image 1", "Image 2", ... "Image n".
Photo collage templates layers above the background layers must provide transparent areas to let the images that will be placed below them show through.
