Smart Objects: RGB inside CMYK

Just two days before completing a two week job the client decided (still dont know why) the job had to be delivered with open layers on CMYK.
After two weaks and 6 jobs and hundred of layers latter had almost all work done..in RGB. I started to panic thinking of the time I would waste just appling curves,levels,etc... to every layer, while keeping things open if they wanted last minute changes.
Thats when it struck me..why not leaving everything as it was (RGB) and convert it to a smart object and then convert the parrent file to CMYK?
I has suprised how it works just fine.In the end the client agreed it was better to keep things as they were, but it sounds a really nice possibility and to some extend makes perfect sense as one would retain the full Gamut of RGB (AdobeRGB or any other) and could convert to proper CMYK acording to needs.
As anyone experienced this?

Mark -
There are a few gross errors in Photoshop that are seen as bugs, but go uncorrected for years due to the amount of work needed to fix them - not to mention - get it worked into the correction cycle in development.  Marketing is steering the train.  Go think about that oxymoron for a few weeks...
;o)
One major problem is the conundrum of being able to open an untagged file, assign a color space, then look at it. That in itself is counter intuitive and basically a HUGE hole in the application with respect to color management. With the new proposed architecture of creating the entire application Smart Photoshop - You not only eliminate this issue, but also have created a new and improved workflow  - integrating source color images into the working space, tagged or untagged, with consistency for all. Adobe products are now far and wide enough to have the majority rule, so why not capitalize on it and implement a global workflow.  This logic works for many industries Adobe serves. From 2d, 3d to motion video, cell phone, bio medical, and who knows what's next. It's image history preservation in its simple form.
In English, whittle down 9 options to 2 for color policies and change the logic between RGB and CMYK file handling. Convert to working space.  Have the working space 32 bit Pro Photo RGB. Files flow into it as well as color space conversions. Now remember, this is a choice feature and not a force fit. It's a marketing born inception that caters to the masses for best practice. If you want to work outside that environment, its your choice, but it's not advisable unless you are resurrecting trash, re-assigning really bad pictures, or it does not work for your requirement and a new additional per-dim needs to be created.  I'm offering a choice.  Two choices to be specific. Road or off road travel. For here now, and tomorrow. It's a creature of growth, just like the implementation of Smart Objects that has morphed more possibilities as well as options.  But Smart Objects is a representation of Adobe's expanded free for all mentality to push the envelope of development for market share. My advice is to back on the whizz bang wow factor and get some damn control of the features grained in deep rooted experience from power users....
Smart Photoshop is needed because users are not getting it Gentleman and Ladies. Expecting most users to become geeks is not going to happen. It's a given from a marketing stand point, but they refuse to see how to address it for one reason or another. Maybe too busy dealing with the company merge and product integration. Im pretty sure its quite an undertaking, but its time to make the best - better....
I remember Bruce Fraser talking about Chris and Thomas wanting 12 ish choices for color policies fearing too much restrain for growth. Thank you Bruce for 9, but my friend, we need even less.... Smart Photoshop gives 2 choices. Structure or Chaos. Right now we only have chaos.  My vote is to have uniformity with very little user understanding and awareness. That's good implementation.  The software has to become intelligent people.....
I'm game.  Who has balls here?

  • Psd files not updating edited smart objects (PS CC as of 6/3/14)

I created a master PSD file and added four different TIF files as 'linked' (not embedded) Smart Objects.  If I edit these linked files (they open when double-clicked, or 'Edit Contents') make changes and then save & close the edited master TIF files, the main PSD file does not reflect the edited changes. If I double click the Smart Object, it opens and shows my edits, but to save & close still does not update the master PSD file.   I do this all the time without issue, so I am perplexed.  Even if I right-click the smart object and select "Update All Modified Content" nothing changes.  Closing the file, restarting Photoshop- nothing updates the main PSD file with the changes to the edited TIF files... EXCEPT if I 'replace contents' with the same file: then it updates the PSD.
    Any ideas?

I was actually just working in Illlustrator. Selecting the vector object and then select PS and Paste. I'm then asked if I want this to be a smart object. I select yes and it adds the object as a smart object layer. If I double click the layer it opens it in Illustrator, I make a change, save it and close it. Then back to PS and the smart object doesn't update.
I haven't used Place Embedded or Place Linked. I don't understand what those functions do. It's just not how I'm use to working.
Actually I have a large PSD doc. Inside it is a group of objects that I have turned into a Smart object. Inside that (by double clicking) is an AI file that is also a smart object. When I open that up to make a change it won't update once I save and close.
I have tried a coulpe of test with placed Linked and Embedded objects and I can't get those to work either. So what ever the change was. So far not really liking it.

  • Unable to Save my Smart Object without "Flattening the Image"

    Hey there, I am helpless.
I am Using Photoshop CC 2014, always the newest version, on a mac.
Here's the problem: I am usually working in PSDs with many layers, and some smart objects. Inside of the smart objects, I have content that I can change.
So when I save the contents inside of a Smart Object, it also changes them inside of the main PSD.
BUT - since months, I can't save the changes inside of a Smart Object. Photoshop is telling me:
Can't save this document back to its original file format. Flatten layers and discard extra data as necessary and choose File > Save again.
When I flatten the image, the Smart Object has no usage for me, because it's like a rasterized layer.
Someone help me?  I didn't find a solution in the internet!
Btw: I already tried reinstalling Photoshop. The issue is still there.
    Thank you.

If that is not the case please read this with regard to general trouble-shooting, restoring Preferences after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved might be of special interest:

  • Smart Objects not Updating in PS CC

I'm designing elements in Illustrator CC and then copy and paste them into PS and select  Create Smart Object. I've also tried saving the AI element and then placeing in PS as well. Then if I double click the smart object to edit it, it will open up in illustrator and I make a change then save and close and when I re-activate PS the change does not apply.
Did PS change something that I'm not aware of? This is a huge pain in the A**. Anyone else having this problem?

  • Smart Object .psd file opens in ACR, why?

In LR3.0, I select a .psd file in my catalog and do "edit in photoshop as a smart object".  Inside of photoshop, I double click on the layer or click "edit contents" of the smart object layer, it takes me to the ACR dialog.  Well, I do not want this dialog.  I just want to edit it as I would any other document inside of photoshop.  Smart objects created inside of photoshop to NOT behave this way.  Only lightroom psd files that are opened in photoshop as a smart object exhibit this "strange" behavior.  How can I edit the contents of these smart objects inside of photoshop and omit ACR?

Your application versions aren't in sync, so this just won't work I'm afraid: CS4 is (roughly) four years behind LR4 and the version of ACR that comes with PS CS4 (5.x - should be on 5.7) won't be able to interpret the edits you've carried out in LR4, assuming you're using the latest process version with the new slider controls.
Very surprised you're not getting any error messages or warnings though. Maybe you switched them off in Lightroom?

  • Smart Object Thumbnail Not Launching Illustrator

    Hi guys,
I've noticed what seems like a bug on my PC when using CreativeCloud. When I double click on the Smart Object Thumbnail inside of Photoshop instead of it launching Illustrator (the place the smart object was created), Photoshop brings up a window titled 'Import PDF'. The process I do works perfectly on my Macbook but on my PC it seems to present this error.
My Process is: Open Illustrator > Creative Vector > Copy Vector > Paste Into Photoshop > Paste as Smart Object > Find Layer > Double Click Smart Object Thumbnail.... After this step it usually launches Illustrator but it currently opens the 'Import PDF' UI, which then opens the file inside Photoshop as a rasterised file.
Do any of you have a fix for it?
    Thanks,
    Warren

You are an absoloute legend! My system was associating ai files with Photoshop as default. So I just right clicked on the ai file and selected 'Always Open with this Program'.
That was such a weird issue, I've never seen before (New Windows User). So I thank you for giving me a push in the right direction.

  • Overprint in Smart Objects

I have a CMYK Illustrator smart object in a CMYK Photoshop document. The smart object contains black line work that should overprint. However, when I preview the channels in Photoshop, the line work knocks out of the other colors. I tried Attributes > Overprint and Appearance > Multiply with the same results.
I can set the smart object layer to Multiply in Photoshop, but that multiplies everything, not just the line work.
    Any suggestions for a workaround?
    Eric

I see. So if I want black to overprinting Photoshop, I have to make it a separate smart object and set that layer to multiply. Not quite as friendly as I would have liked, but workable.
In my case, I ended up bringing importing a Photoshop file with the color layers into Illustrator and place the vector line art on top of it. This allowed me to keep vector art and control the overprinting.

  • RGB and Smart Objects

When I place separate images into my CMYK master document, should I be placing them as smart objects and preserving their RGB values? Is there any benefit or detriment to doing that? I imagine it's good to preserve the RGB values, but if I am always going to print to a CMYK press with that particular document, then does it benefit me in any way? I've shied away from keeping the RGB values because I feel like they give me a false view of what the CMYK doc will turn out to look like. Any suggestions?

    Stephanie:
I am not being unkind but there is SO much more to this subject than you currently begin to comprehend.
Let's start with your Color Management settings:
(gballard's web site, to which we directed you in your other thread, will be a great help to you in getting a better understanding of this subject.)
You simply MUST start with a properly calibrated and PROFILED monitor. That is non-negotiable so buy a spectrometer (Puck) if you don't already have one.
In your CM settings you have a selection of choices but if you are sending work to a Press, it is absolutely essential that you choose a CMYK Profile which is targeted to the KIND of Press and the type of Stock on which your job will run.
And of course you can, and SHOULD, create your document in a recognized RGB working space (either ProPhoto or Adobe RGB but NOT sRGB) and embed that Profile into your document because you then have the flexibility to CONVERT that RGB file to the correct CMYK Profile for the job.
And your Printing Company has some terms of reference, and the means of rectifying your file, if your CMYK conversion does not meet the requirements of their Presses.
Next, you need to learn to use Soft Previews.
You should set your proposed CMYK Profile as your Preview Profile (in Photoshop's View menu/Proof Set-up/Custom) making sure that you have checked "Simulate Paper Color".
If you keep "Proof Colors" checked, you can work in RGB while getting a very clear idea of how your colors will actually print when the ink hits paper on the Press.

  • Duplicated document with the smart object which has a DNG file inside it

A TIFF file has a DNG file as a smart object inside it ...
If you duplicate this file, the smart object can not be opened any more.

    Thanks ...

I've looked at it again for TIFF after reading your post ... it is working now

  • Getting the filename of a placed image inside a smart object

    Hi
I'm wondering if I can get any help with a problem I'm trying to overcome for a friend of mine.
My friend is a photographer who does a lot of schhols work (pupil portraits) and wants to create a little document similar to this (very simplified) version:
I'm trying to help him to create a batch process so that he can make this take up much less of his time!
Here's where I've got to so far. I've created the layout above which is essentially a smart object (from an external file) manipulated in a couple of ways.
The workflow as I see it at the moment (although I'm wide open to suggestions, and I'm having a bit of Friday brain) is this: I generate an action that replaces the content of the external file with the contents of (each file in his incoming list, sequentially).
That file then comes back into the layout above and a new (flattened) copy is saved out from there.
Rinse and rerpeat through the list of incoming files.
I can just about make that bit happen using actions, but here's what I can't get - the filename of the incoming file (the one that's placed in the smart object). Can I can use a modified version of the AddFileName script to generate a text layer based on the filename of the placed contents in the smart object? Does any of that make sense? I'm reading this back to myself and even I'm not sure! ho ho.
My lack of logic/coherent sentence structure here is what probably holds me back in any eforts I have made in getting into scripting.
I'd appreciate any help that could be offered.
    Thanks.
    Fenton

Ah - alas it sems not to be. I think I am going to have to come up with a different workflow and by extension, solution. My current thinking is that I need to have an input folder for the images to be used in the layout, and an output folder for the results to be saved into, along with the layout.psd (as above) all housed in the same folder. Then I need (help) to write a script that does the following:
Checks that the layout document is open (that bit is easy enough)
    if(documents.length==0){
alert("You need to have your layout template open (-layout.psd-)")
    }else{
// Do next bit here - and what I'm trying to do is described below.
// Hopefully by typing it out I might start to get it straight in my head
// Any help with any part of this process is greatluy appreciated
        // I'm trying to learn!
Then what I think the script needs to do is tocheck the contents of the input folder and find out how many files are in it then set this as a variable, to set the length of a loop, maybe? Or should it load the filenames as an array and work through them sequentially?
Once that information is established, there is a smart object on the first layer that needs to be updated with the contents of the first file - my thinking s that this is done by the script opening each image, and then copy/pasting into the smart object, merging down (so I don't end up with an enormous multi-layered file). My reason for thinking this would be a good idea would be that I could just run a quick check to make sure that no landscape pics have sneaked in there and if they have, rotate them (which again, is pretty easy as even I could do that bit, too).
    doc = activeDocument;
                if (doc.height < doc.width) {
                  doc.rotateCanvas(90);
                } else {
                  // Carry on
This will update all of the smart object instances throughout the layout template.
Then the text underneath the main image needs to be updated with the filename of the file that has been pasted in the smart object, and after that a [flattened] copy saved out to an output folder.
Rinse and repeat for the remaining images in the input folder.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks

  • Enlarged Smart Objects with vectors inside them appear as resized bitmaps

In Photoshop CC for Mac I have...
    Created layers of vector art
Combined them into a smart object
Enlarged the smart object (both via "Transform" and "Image Size")
Upon enlarging, the vector objects look the way an enlarged bitmap would (i.e. fuzzy, pixelated, terrible) instead of crisp and clean as a vector should look. I've double- and triple-checked to make sure all layers have remained vector after resizing and they have.
This is a terrible inconvenience for anyone that works heavily with vector smart objects and resizes them. I use this workflow on a daily basis to make adapting interface elements for various screen resolutions easier, without it I am beyond screwed.
If anyone knows a workaround (or if this requires a setting that I haven't found to be changed) please let me know.

you may want to read it from the beginning.
Basically while a smart object layer embedded object may contain  vector graphics.  Photoshop renders a composite for the embedded object and uses the resulting rendered pixels for the smart object layers pixels.  When you transform a smart object layer your transforming those pixels like raster layer using your Photoshop preference interpolation preference..  If you want to resize the vector graphics contained in the embedded object you must open the embedded object into the approbate application and resize the embedded object using vector tools. After you commit the resize. Photoshop will update the embedded object and the layers pixel will be the composite rendered for the updated resized embedded object.

  • Vector Smart Object inside another smart object losing quality after scale

    Hi,
I have 6 icons created on Illustrator and imported as vector smart objects.
Then, I select all 6 and create another Smart Object from then.
If I scale this smart object now, it will loose it´s quality, as if the icons were raster in the first place.
This was not what happend in in PS CS5.
It´s a bug or new "feature"?
    Rodrigo C.

You need to realize that Photoshop renders pixels for the embedded object  then when you scale the smart object layer it scale like and raster layer through interpolation not scaled with vector graphics. Its the way smart object layers work. Hers is a very old thread on the subject

  • Smart objects and convert color profile behaviour

I get different results when converting to the same color profile before and after converting to smart object. Why?
    Do the following:
    1. create a cmyk document with color profile 'Euroscale Uncoated v2' and fill the document with the color 86, 32, 14, 0
    2. change the color profile to 'Euroscale Coated v2' -> the values change to 73, 29, 16, 0, no color change on the monitor
    3. create a smart object -> the values stay the same, no color change on the monitor
    4. create a second document like in step 1
    5. create a smart object -> the values stay the same, no color change on the monitor
    6. now change the color profile to 'Euroscale Coated v2' -> the values stay the same, this time we have a color change on the monitor
Why don't I get the same result?

I found this topic looking for an answer to this exact same problem.
Many of you refer to it as a bug / unexpected behaviour, which i thought it was either. But after some tests, it seems very logical behaviour actually to me now.
It simply follows the rules in the color settings.
In "Color Management Policies", when CMYK is set to "Preserve Embedded Profiles", it keeps the CMYK numbers for smart objects. Setting this to "Convert to Working CMYK" would make the color conversion as expected.
However, i don't think this would be a good idea (depending on your workflow offcourse). For example, pasting a 100K shape from a coated.icc illustrator file into an uncoated.icc photoshop file, as a smart object, would convert the 100K (not keeping the CMYK numbers).
I guess the workarround with a CMYK smart object into an RGB smart object (or maybe LAB), is ok to use when CMYK to CMYK conversion is really necessary for smart objects.

  • Smart Object convert colors

I'm working with color proof and the result is very very important to the final work.
So I'm worried because when create a smart object from all layers in RGB mode and then convert the image to CMYK the result is a little different that if I convert a flat image. Why do this happens? And how I control to obtain the same result?
Placed a linked file has a different color result too.
I need to maintain all layers available, so I trying to work with this method.
    Any answer or help?

And how I control to obtain the same result?
    You don’t.
At least with many possible combinations of transparencies and Blend Modes it is impossible to obtain the same result in CMYK as in RGB while maintaing the original Layer structure.
Placed a linked file has a different color result too.
Different from embedded Smart Objects or just different from the flattened image?
To be blunt you probably don’t fully comprehend the principal difference between additive and subtractive colors.
Also are you sure your CMYK space conforms to the specific print process?

  • Transparency of the Smart Object created in Illustrator

Hi guys! Anybody smarter than me?
I created vector object in Illustrator with opacity masks:
I inserted saved .ai file {by draging from Br} into Ps as Smart Object.
But have a look at the imgs. below: You can see, that the masked area using Ai - Opacity mask is 100% demasked in Ai, but do you understand, what the same area does when .ai file is converted to the Smart Object in Ps? Do you have any ide what can cause such difference in rendering of the same object?
    Thank you in advance!

Make sure you are using the same color space in both programs and create your mask in the destination color space. It is a color management problem. This problem is because you are using different color spaces in Illustrator and Photoshop.
Most likely you created the mask in a CMYK color space (document) in Illustrator and your Photoshop document is using an RGB color space. In fact you will have the same problem in Illustrator if you convert your CMYK document to RGB by using File > Document Color mode or copy the artwork from a CMYK document and paste it in a RGB document. Have in mind that the problem is not limited only to converting between CMYK and RGB color spaces, you could have the same problem when converting between two different color spaces using the same color model like RGB, for example sRGB in Illustrator and Adobe RGB in Photoshop. For additional details regarding similar problems with color spaces check this thread:
