Smart playlist "copy to play order" not working?

I have a smart list that selects classical music pieces based on two separate criteria ("choose with words "###" or "***" in the comments into the playlist), and puts them in the playlist.
But even if the play order is displayed correctly in iTunes, once it loads onto my iPods (4th Gen Touch, and iPod Photo), the play order is randomized.
This may be tolerable with rock music, but in classical music when several movements must be played in order, it poses  a major problem.
I have re-ordered it using "Album by Title", verfied the play order in iTunes and then have chosen "Copy to Play Order".  then I sync to my iPods, but in iPod the playlist is out of order (whatever order Smart Playlist chose.. which seems rather random).
The only way to work around so far, is to create a standard playlist with a different name, and copy the contents of the Smart Playlist, order it correctly, and then chose "copy to Play Order".  But this sort of defeats the Smart Playlist...
Is there a bug?  or am I not understanding how "Copy to Play Order" works?
I'm using 10.6.8 and iTunes 10.6.1.

What is going on here. I don't have this problem with my 3rd generation Nano (the square one with the clickwheel), but I do with the 6th gen (the square one with the touchscreen).

  • "Copy to Play Order" not working

    Hello,
I have been using my new iPod for a couple of weeks now and it is working very well as is iTunes. My issue is with trying to get certain albums/playlists to play in a certain order on my iPod.
To cut to the chase: I have my iPod set to shuffle songs, but I still want certain playlists to play in a particular order. Can this be done?
I have used the "Copy to Play Order" command in iTunes when the playlist is in the correct order. However, when listening to the playlist in the iPod, the cuts play in random order.
Any assistance you can give would be greatly appreciated. Thank you...

  • Ipod playlists in wrong order, in itunes they show correct (by rating), copy to play order doesnt work

Trying to set the ipod correctly since new updates and the song order is wrong, in itunes is correct as i intended it by rating, but on the ipod shows wrong, tried deleting playlist, full restore, copy to play order and manual upload, all to no avail. im loosing the will to live frankly.

only in the play lists in the ipod, no criteria seem to work. when i hit artist or songs it appears as it always did alphabetically, do u not see them likewise?

  • "Copy To Play Order" has stopped working

Anyone else have this problem appear in the past two weeks or so? I have a smart playlist which is very basic - it's the least often played 100 songs in all of iTunes. Every day after I play songs, some of them drop off the list, and lesser-played ones move onto the list. I re-shuffle it while it's sorted by the first column (number column) by using the shuffle button on the lower left of iTunes.
I right click on the playlist name, then click "copy to play order," then re-sync the iPod (4th gen nano).
When I look at the contents of my nano in iTunes, it reflects the order of the playlist in iTunes (shuffled). But then, when I eject the nano, copy to play order did not work on the actual nano. It's sorted in some strange way which groups together a bunch of songs by each artist, then throws a random song in between, then another artist, all loosely moving backwards alphabetically.
Help please! I haven't done the most recent update to iTunes but I did the one right before it. I also did the most recent firmware upgrade for my nano, but this problem showed up before the firmware upgrade.

Don't know if this will help as I didn't have time to read all the details. I was looking for an answer myself... Why do I have to click 'copy to play order' twice to save my choice of play order? When I download podcsts of talk radio in hour episodes, they always appear in iTunes in reverse order (Hour 3 first). I click on the first (number) column in the main view and they go into the right order. I click 'copy to play order' and they go back to the original order again. So I go back and re-order them to my preference, click 'copy to play order'again and this time it stays how I want it and is in the right order on my Nano.
So maybe doing the process twice will help others who think it's not working right...
    Cheers
    Steve

  • I have a 1st & 4th gen ipod shuffle.  When I copy a playlist to the 1st gen it plays back correctly.  The 4th gen plays back the same playlist alphabetically by artist.  The copy by play order function makes no difference.  Any suggestions?

I have a 1st & 4th gen Ipod shuffle.  When I copy a playlist to the older shuffle it plays back in order.  When I copy a playlist to the 4th gen shuffle it plays by alphabetically by artist.  I used the copy by play order but with no change.  Any suggestions?

This is crazy. What are those guys thinking. I would love to have my 2nd generation ipod shuffle back - it was so easy to use, so easy to operate, alas it was lost/stolen! There are 2 big disasterous (disaster to ease of use) changes in the ipod 4th generation. This particularly relates to podcasts. One is they only play in order by source/type of podcast. You cannot break out of that unless, you have someone to show you how to use the voice over which is not covered anywhere on the very thin manual or elsewhere. Secondly and just as bad but related also, you cannot line them up on your shuffle by date, preference, anything. ONLY apple will do this for you. I hate the thing and will return it today after visiting Apple 3 days in a row to try and get answers, trying to apply the answers and realizing beside the fact that some of the answers given were wrong, they were not going to lead to ease of use. Who said this was better? I was struggling with this (not knowing how to break out of one type of podcast) until i went to Apple and talked to about 4 people who knew less than i did about the shuffle. OUr family has just bought 2 new macbook pros for my son and wife. I have had my macbook for 4 years and love it. I had my ipod shuffle (2 gen) for the same time and loved it but now I don't trust Apple. Are they going to make changes just to make changes. Get some consumer advice, please not just from nerds who want more buttons but from everyday people.

  • Required to "Copy to Play Order" for my non-shuffled playlists

Hi. My playlists synced to my iPhone are in Album order. Beginning about a month ago, adding a new album to a playlist results in the album going to the bottom of the playlist on my iPhone. It's correct on iTunes, but wrong on the iPhone. The workaround is to right-click on the playlist and select "Copy to Play Order" before syncing.
I've been using playlist-based syncing two or three times a day since I bought my nano in 2006, and have never had to do this before; the "Copy to Play Order" command is supposed to only be required when you want to use the sequence of a shuffled playlist on iPhone or iPod.
The only thing that happened around the time the problem started was that I permanently turned off iTunes Match. Creating fresh playlists didn't correct the problem.
    Please help!

Hi. Can anyone tell me if this is now normal behavior, or is this something no-one else has seen?

  • "Copy To Play Order" - how to script / automate?

    Hi,
I need to have certain Smart Playlist appear sorted in my iPod and I always have to manually right-lick on playlist and click on "Copy To Play Order" before syncing. Does anyone know of a way to automate this? AppleScript actions for iTunes do not seem to have this command.
    Thank you!

    Where do I start?
    1--crossover track mamagement
2--true full boolean playlist control for Smart Playlists
3--separate track AND album produuction fields
    4--32K comment field
    5--Album label/distribution label fields
6--Searchable Lyric field for general use and as a Smart Playlist criteria field
7--Sub-genre field (to maintain consistency with the iTMS)
8--Selective En/Dis-able of "Shuffle" menu item for playlists. To prevent accidental shuffling.
    That's just a partial list.

  • Playlist / change the play order ,,, Gen 2 15GB classic

I have most things mastered Ipod wise -ish , after 6 months "no !!! I can figure it out "
No luck with highlight drag & drop play lists up or down to change play order ???
I have applied a bandage to my forehead from beating it against the wall .
    Thanks bandage head

I assume you want a custom sort order within a playlist, not sorted by Song, Artist, or Album.
With the playlist in view in iTunes, make sure that "Shuffle" is turned off. Then click on the left-most header (the empty box over the numbers in the left column). Once you click on that empty box you have unlocked the playlist and can then drag songs to any order you like (just make sure Shuffle is OFF).
When you're done, Option-click on the playlist name (right-click in Windows) and select "Copy to Play Order" to lock in the new sort order. If you auto-sync then you would re-sync the iPod. If you manually manage the iPod, you should be able to do this on the playlist on the iPod with it connected to iTunes.

  • How can I create a smart playlist of least played complete albums?

    Hi,
How can I create a smart playlist of least played complete albums? (of a specific genre, say jazz)
What I would like to do is to have a playlist that will always automatically pull the least played albums of a specific genre (ideally, but not necessarily, with a random album play within that playlist) Hope you are getting the concept!
    Thank you for any idea!
    Daniel
p.s. there have been solutions for earlier versions of iTunes, none working with iTunes 10 apparently

As you say, you can't access the Gapless property in a smart playlist rule.
The obvious way that comes to mind would be to create another playlist with stuff to exclude from your final list and put the gapless tracks and anything else that won't filter out easily into it.
Yes you say but I have oodles of gapless tracks and I don't want to gather them up by hand.
OK, so you'll need a script. Here is one I've just created for the purpose: GaplessToPlaylist

  • What does "Copy to play order" do?

On the right-click context menu for a playlist (ITunes 7.6) there is an entry with the description "Copy To Play Order". I haven't been able to notice this doing anything. What is it supposed to do?
    Thanks,

    Thanks!
I was blanking on the IPod connection, and looking for something just internal to ITunes, like imposing the ordering from the playlist ontothe overall Music listing somehow. (Though it wasn't doing this.)
So now I still have a feature wishlist for Apple...
    * Let me select a preference to /always/ apply playlist orders to the IPod.
    * More generally, give the user more control over sorting in the main Music list. The Sorting fields in the Info box are helpful, but not as helpful as allowing main and subsidiary sorting by two columns, like in a spreadsheet.
The point of the second one would be to let me restore native track order for albums. Currently I resort to making an album into a playlist and sorting it there.
Thanks again for answering the original question.

  • TA27500 Forget the "Copy to Play Order" solutions.

Forget the "Copy to Play Order" solutions. None of them worked for me. Just think like the computer... rename your artists with a two-digit number at the beginning of their name, in the preferrred play order. Voila! Done. And in order.

In iTunes you can sort playlists by various fields easily but when you copy the playlist to a device the tracks will be ordered according to the Play Order.
If you select the leftmost column of numbers as the sort column then iTunes should reveal the current play order. You can drag tracks up and down this list to rearrange them or, having used one of the other column headings to sort things, right-click on the playlist name and use Copy to Play Order to set the default order for this list when copied to a device.

  • Smart playlist based on play counts within specific time period?

I have tooled all around with the smart playlist options, and this is not a possibility, based on the options iTunes gives you. So I'd like to know if there is a posibility that a script can be written for something like this.
What I want is to be able to create a smart playlist that generates a list of songs that I played a lot during a certain time. For example, if I want to listen to a collection of songs that I had been listening to a lot back in October, I would want an option to do something like this.....
Plays (from [10/01/13] to [10/31/13]) is: (greater than) [12]
Meaning I played it more than 12 times in October alone. Could've played it before that, could've played it after that, but I only want the 13+ October plays to be considered.
Using the options "plays" and "last played" isn't going to work, because that's just gonna eliminate any song that I played again after that time period.
So can a script be written for something like what I'm looking for?
I don't know if it's a posibility because that would mean that iTunes would have to log every single play on a song, and I don't think it does that. I think it erases its memory of the previous play date each time the song is played again.

The last iPod update I had is at least 3 month ago (iPod click wheel, system version 3.1). I am pretty sure that the live update at least those based on play count still did work after that. After updating to iTunes 5 it definitely was gone. I don't know if it is iTunes 5, but this is when I realized it and I did not install anything else for my iPod the last couple of months.
I am pretty sure that it worked before, because I used to listen to audio books that consist of 5 minutes track. The live update helped to avoid listening to the same track twice. I would have recognized the missing live update earlier otherwise.

  • "Copy to Play Order" command missing

I'm using iTunes 8.0.1. Does anyone know what happened to the "Copy to Play Order" command that you used to used be able to get when you CTRL/right clicked on a track in a playlist? This would apply the current sort order (for example, Year) to the permanent order of tracks in the playlist. Perhaps it was removed between v7 and v8.
    Thanks.

Thanks for your help! Right or CTRL clicking the the playlist name in the left panel does the trick. It would be nice if Apple put this in the Help file for iTunes. An ancient support article (circa iTunes 4.5) is all that comes up for this topic and it shows the old click-on-track method.
