Smart Playlist Fix??

When are they going to fix the problem with syncing the smart playlists on the iPhone?
I don't see how Apple can just ignore this. I have way too many playlists now because I have to make "iPhone copies" of them all.

This wouldn't be an update. This is a fix to a major problem with a feature of their software. I mean, this is why you buy an iPod - for its ease of use - but there is not ease. It does not do what it is supposed to do. I cannot believe Apple continues to ignore issues like this.
Does the Touch have the same issue? If I bout the touch and it did this, I would return it.

  • Smart Playlists Fixed - Thanks Apple :-)

    Hey,
Has anyone else noticed, Smart Playlists are now sorted in the correct order on the Apple TV? If you make a Top 40 most played in iTunes, the number 1 song now shows up at the top of the list on the Apple TV, rather than at the bottom.
A small detail, but glad to see Apple finally "sorted" it out.

In iTunes I have a "Recently Added Music" Smart Playlist. This is basically the 100 most recent songs I've added into iTunes, sorted by Date Added order.
This Smart Playlist shows up accurately in the correct order on my iPod Touch AND on my Apple TV. So yes, this kind of thing now works correctly with the Apple TV. Most recently added song at the top of the list, and least recently added song at the bottom.

  • Items not showing up in library while visible in smart playlists. How to fix?

I just added some music to my iTunes Library. It shows up in my Recently Added smart playlist, as well as newly created smart playlists, but for some reason it isn't in my library. I've searched for it, I've used the column browser, I've tried just scrolling through my Library and it just isn't there. All the tags are correct, and when looking at my iTunes Media folder in Finder, the songs are correctly placed in the Music/Artist/Album folder tree of the iTunes Media folder.
Does anyone know how to fix this?
PS. My iTunes Media folder isn't located on my Macintosh HD, I've moved it to an Airport Disk and pointed iTunes to it in its preferences.

The problem just fixed itself. I got irritated and quit messing with it. When I came back an hour later, it was fixed.

  • Bug: iOS 5 and iTunes 10.5 podcast smart playlist sort order and how to fix.

There seems to be a bug in iOS 5 and iTunes 10.5 involving the sort order of a smart playlist of podcasts. I created such a playlist and sorted by release date on iTunes but I noticed it had a different sort order on the iPod Touch.
After playing around with it a bit I found that the only way to preserve the sort order that I have in iTunes on the iPod Touch is to uncheck "Live Updating" in the smart playlist.

Confirming this incredibly annoying bug.  Basic list sorting not working... real bottom shelf work apple.
workaround update:  limit to must be turned on, set it to an absurdly high number if you don't want to actually limit the playlist, then one of the sortby options in that submenu will work.   The live update checkbox is irrelevant from experimentation.
This workaround does NOT fix the fundamental problem: sort order from itunes in smart playlists is not being synced and preserved in ios5 devices.
This is the latest in a long string of debacles which is making me seriously consider swapping to debian stable. (snow leopard to lion was a severe downgrade in performance for anyone doing heavy multitasking.. scheduling is FUBAR... when a command option escape beachballs on a brand new core 17 machine, your OS has serious problems with nice levels)

  • Smart Playlists are fixed with iPod Updater 2006-01-10

    Hello Podders, Resident Furball here...
iPod Updater 2006-01-10 restores dynamic updating of Smart Playlists on the iPod
iPod Updater 2005-06-26 disabled the onboard dynamic updating of Smart Playlists on iPods older than the Nano and Gen5. This feature can now be restored using iPod Updater 2006-01-10.
We held lengthy debates about this issue on Discussions (here, here and here), as well as the iLounge thread that sparked a dedicated website.
However, we are glad to confirm that the latest iPod Updater resolves this issue, as I was informed by email from Apple Level 2 Support, and as tested by some of our long-suffering Gen4 and Pod Photo users. The Apple KB article on Smart Playlists has also been updated.
Since the threads that I started have now been locked down to reflect resolution, I'm posting this just to confirm that everything now appears to have been resolved, and I would like to thank everyone here on Discussions for their patience and excellent troubleshooting in diagnosing this problem. Thank you to everyone who posted Feedback, those of you who took the time to phone Apple, and also to Apple Level 2 Phone Support for their assistance in escalating this matter up to US Engineering.
    Happy Podding everyone!
    Kind regards,
    Gopha.

    Hello folks, Resident Furball again...
Many folks have now reported that Smart Playlist functionality has been properly restored to the iPod.
However, some folks have been reporting that Smart Playlists containing Podcasts are still coming to grief.
From what I have seen reported, the firmwares prior to the Updater 2005-06-26 that broke Smart Playlists had the ability to dynamically update Podcast-containing Smart Playlists, but this functionality has not been restored in the latest 2006-01-10 that has fixed 'simple' Smart Playlists.
I don't use Podcasts myself, so if you would like to know more, please refer to posts from Vibeeen and Tutackhamen who have described the continuing issue in detail.
In the meanwhile, I have drawn the attention of Level 2 Support to these reports, and recommend that you continue to submit appropriate Feedback if you are affected by this quirk.
    Kind regards,
    Gopha.

  • Was the Smart Playlist podcast order bug on iPod nano fixed in iTunes 11

iTunes 9 broke the order in which Smart Playlists play podcasts in on the Nano.  See "Smart Playlist order not respected on ipod nano after upgrade to iTunes 9" (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2154509).  Has this been fixed in iTunes 11?

    Hi MNM1974,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you want to know how to manually manage the music and playlists on your iPod nano. The article below provides more information about automatic and manual syncing of content to your device, and it will walk you through the process.

    I hope this helps.

  • ITunes (11 I think) in smart playlists and folders won't apply the "Last Played" search criteria in real time.  Please fix!!!

The major iTunes recent makeover, generally *****.
It's ugly to look at; it's grey and blue-grey and more grey.  god, how drab can you get.  You know how in the Finder we can assign colors to files, folders & applications.  It would be fantastic to be able to do that to playlists and the folders of playlists within iTunes.  Please add some color!  And/Or let us choose the color format for our personal copy of iTunes, like some browsers do.
But more importantly I have some rather sophisticated smart playlists; many of which source other (smart) playlists & folders of playlists in my collection.  With this current iTunes makeover (iTunes version 11 I think), they screwed something up.  None of my smart playlists will apply in real time the "Last Played" search criteria.  This is very annoying.  Please, please fix it.
And how about the ability to duplicate a playlist, to make new playlist.  Not to have two of the same playlists, but so the second one can then be edited to something similar to the first (as opposed to having to build a new similar sophisticated playlist from scratch).  This would save a lot of time in some cases.

  • The smart playlists do not come on my ipod name, as I can fix it?

Hello, when I create a smart playlist file and synchronize with my ipod, on ipod not go with the name that I put on itunes.
could someone give me the solution?

    Sounds like
iOS: Wi-Fi or Bluetooth settings grayed out or dim
One user reported that placing the iPod in the freezer fixed the problem. A trick that works frequently with iPhones:
Settings > AirPlane Mode ON, Do Not Disturb ON
Power down and wait 5-10 minutes
    Power up
Settings > AirPlane Mode OFF, Do Not Disturb OFF
If not successful, an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is usually in order.

  • Temporary Fix for Smart Playlist order bug

I stumbled across a Smart Playlist that was keeping the correct order and discovered why.  It was a Smart Playlist that contained 2 other Smart Playlists.  The original Smart Playlists didn't keep their order but the new one that combined them did.  So I experimented on a few other Smart Playlists by making new Smart Playlists that only contained another Smart Playlist.  And it works.  I've also been able to keep Live Updating enabled.
Hopefully this will help everyone who reads this get by until Apple fixes this bug, which they seem to reintroduce about once a year.

I'm sorry but none of these suggested fixes work, including sort before sync, media kind as music, not referring to other smart playlists, turning live update off, setting Play Order; nothing worked. Plus, on large smart playlists (2000+ songs), not only were they not ordered correctly but the phone (4S no less) pauses 20 seconds to think every time you go into the playlist after a sync.
In fact the only "fix" for me was Apple's last suggestion in their KB article on the subject of smart playlists not syncing in order: in iTunes select my smart playlist, then select all, then make a new playlist (using I believe Edit/New Playlist) based on that selection (which is now not smart), order as needed and sync. It works great but of course the list is now is non-self-updating and I have to manually update it when I add new songs. Not a big deal but still a pain.
For me, order is critical only on my Recently Added playlist, so I went manual with that one. The others I tend to shuffle so the lack of ordering isn't as big of a deal.

  • Top 25 smart playlist bug fixes.....yay!!!!

Just noticed that with my iphone 4 & iTunes 9.2 the top 25 playlist is fixed, with live updating checked.
I must assume this is to do with iOS 4 as it was never working with 3x.
ANyone else confirm this is the case?
    John

I have a couple of issues with the iPod Touch.
    1) I have a smart playlist with the 25 most played songs in iTunes. When I sync the playlist and open it up on the iPod Touch, the playlist contains 25 random songs which are totakky different from the ones in my iTunes playlist.
    2) I have songs from Creed's Greatest Hits CD and from Queen's Greatest Hits CD. When I look for songs by artists, by songs, or by playlists I find them with no problem. But, when I look for them in Cover Flow it puts the Queen's songs under the Creed's album cover. The odd thing is that when one of those Queen's songs is playing, the cover art displayed is the correct one... and on the top it reads:
    Queen
    "Name of song"
    Greatest Hits
But if I flip the iPod to see cover flow, it'll change the cover art to Creed's cover art.

  • 3.1.2 does not fix smart playlist

I have updated my phone to the 3.1.2 OS hoping that it would fix my smart playlists but they are still showing up out of order. And i am tired of having live updating turned off, after all that is the point of a smart playlist.

I am having he same problem. Saw this work around in another thread and it seems to work.
I created another smart list and set the rules to play list and selected the smart list that I want on the phone also added the rule play count set to 0. Synced the phone and the new list is in the order that I want on the phone.

  • I have lost all playlists, how do I recover originals. I attempted the troubleshoot fix of using the Smart Playlist, but I did not utilize a smart playlist.

  • Updater 2006-01-10 does not fix disabled Smart Playlists on my iPod

Despite what the last few posts in this thread state. The most recent 2006-01-10 iPod updater has not enabled the live updating feature on my 60GB iPod photo.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=190331&tstart=0
(BTW, I wish I knew why it was locked!?!?)
I've installed the update, confirmed that my iPod is now running v1.2.1 and I've done a reset, but no Smart Playlist live update lovin'. I played a few tracks on the iPod and none of them showed up in my Recently Played Smart Playlist. )c:
Has anyone gotten this to work? And if so on which model? Or am I just doing something wrong?

From Article 301910 in Apple's Knowledge Base Smart Playlists stop updating dynamically on iPod
If you have an iPod with a Click Wheel, Smart Playlists may stop updating dynamically after you update your iPod with iPod Updater 2005-06-26 or later. For example, if you rate a song on your iPod, the rating appears, but that same song won't appear in a Smart Playlist based on the same rating on your iPod. But this can happen with a Smart Playlist based on any criteria.
Use the iPod Updater 2006-01-10 or later to resolve this.
Note: This issue does not affect iPod nano or Fifth Generation iPod.
Tutackhamen's comments are correct. There is a bug in that smart playlists do not recognize "podcast is true". Instead, you need to use a condition like "genre contains podcast". Apart from this, smart playlists are working. Nested playlists also work correctly, but all playlists must be on the iPod, since you won't match the updated conditions until these playlists complete.

  • IOS update still did NOT fix the live updating to smart playlist on iPhone

I updated to the brand new iOS 4.1 today, and I am still having an issue that has made me upset for the past few months. For years and years I have been able to use smart playlists that have live updated on my iPods and iPhones without problems. Recently, within the past few months of software updates, my smart playlists have stopped live updating.
Here are two examples I'm talking about:
    1. I have a smart playlist of music that I call Unrated for iPhone. The smart playlists requirements are that it has no star rating and that it is limited to 500 MB. I used to be able to rate songs on my iPhone, and they would get removed from the playlist automatically within my iPhone without having to sync it with my desktop. Now, as I rate those songs on my iPhone, they stay on the unrated list.
    2. I have another playlist called 5*'s least recent. The requirements for this smart playlist are that the songs have 5 stars, and they are limited to the 75 least recently played songs. Songs used to be removed from that list once they were played. Now, they stay on that list until I sync my iPhone to my desktop.
What happened to live updating? Is anybody else experiencing this problem? I have loved this feature for years and now there is a bug! Has anybody brought up this topic before? Because I couldn't find any solutions.

FYI, I've found that Live Updating can SORT OF work. It seems if you only have two rules, live upating works (IE, I have one that is a Rating must be 3-5*'s and last played cannot be within the last 8 weeks). Once the song is played it disapears off the playlist. BUT, as soon as I try to add a third rule, it doesn't work anymore! This is unfortunate because two rules really limits the ability of the playlist...
    Cheers,

  • Fix Smart Playlist problem - different solution

I'm having the same problem with all those other iPod Touch user as well and it was the first day i bought them. After i search so many times this is what i came up with.
    My problem:
Playlist such as recently added or most played show random song instead of in order as it should be
    Solution:
When you create new smart playlist, DO NOT CHECK live updating.
Then after you sync back to your iPod, it should work!
thanks to another user from the iPhone discussion, i guess you just have to work around with it...

Nice find! I never used Podcasts, but have fallen victim to "I didn't scroll down enough" myself
Good info - thanks for sharing!
